Bani sat in front of her dressing table, getting ready for the Gala nite. She stared at her reflection in the mirror, turning from one side to the other. In her head, she had never thought much of her looks, but it seemed lately, even she had to admit she was more careful about the products she used. And all for what? For whom?

You know, that niggling tiny voice in her head said.

She smiled. Yeah, she knew. But that was a complete danger zone and everyone seemed to know it. Jai Walia, she thought again. Why was it that good girls were always drawn to bad guys? I mean why was it that all of her efforts to get away from the guy just wouldn't work? She had decided to steer clear of Walia Group of Companies, but The Walia himself just kept finding excuses to pop up all over the place.

She sighed at her reflection. What was she to do now? She was a hundred percent sure he was going to be at the Gala Nite, there was no escaping that. Problem was she was so looking forward to seeing him again. She couldn't understand it. When he was in front of her, she wanted to fight tooth and nail to get away from him… to keep him at arm's length. But when he wasn't there, all she could do was think about him, over and over again. The sight of him, the feel of him, his touch, his smell, all of him! This was just plain crazy, but this was exactly what she felt.

She turned to look at the dress she had chosen for tonight. Yep, she would be dressed to the nines. She picked up the dress which was made in rich coffee brown and had a bustier encased in rich gold for variety. Soft folds of tan voile cascaded down the bustier like a rippling river. She held it against herself and faced the mirror. She couldn't wait to wear the full length gown….

That niggling voice was back. And why do you think that is, it asked her.

"Alright already,' she said out loud.

"Good, then I don't have to say nothing," Rano said, coming into the room, all dressed up and ready to go.

"My my, my," Bani said, giving her sister the once over, "Don't you look amazing."

"Thank you Sis, I put a lot of work into it."

"I can see," Bani nodded in approval, "That boyfriend of your is not going to know what hit him."

Rano glanced down at her dress. It was a simple dress in bright red, a fitted corset with intricate white designs and a full skirt. The shawl was draped over her shoulders. Bold Rano had chosen to wear small earrings and no other jewelry.

Brave, Bani thought again.

She noticed Rano eyeing her dress, "And by the looks of it, neither will Jai."

"SShhhhhhh!" she hissed at Rano.

"What? It's not like they don't already know."

"Doesn't matter," she said, shutting her door, "Nothing can come of it."

"You know this how?"

"I just do," she said, sitting in front of the mirror again.

"And yet here you are, not happy about it," Rano indicated her expression.

"Well what would you have me do?" she raised her eyes to her sister's, "I'm not going back to WGI and I've decided not to see him if it's within my power to do so…"

"And still, you're upset about it."

She shrugged.

"One question, who are you doing this for?" Rano asked, "Mom? Dad? Or you?"

She looked at Rano again, "That's a weird question."

"But a valid one. So?"

She thought for a while, "I really don't know."

"Well, figure out what makes you happy and do it. We're all just concerned, hence the caution, but if you want to go ahead, the choice is then yours."

The doorbell rang.

Rano jumped up, "That's Jeet!"

"Sit back down!" Bani ordered her.

Rano frowned, "Why?'

"What would be the point of you wasting all that time getting ready if you rush down the stairs without a chance for him to appreciate the hard work you put into it?"

Her confusion gave way to understanding, "And that's why it pays to have an older sister."

"Too true."

A maid came up to call her, "Okay Didi dearest, I'll see you at the venue."

"Be good now."

She winked at her, "Always."

When she was gone, Bani turned back to the mirror. What makes you happy Bani?

The Annual Black Tie Business Award was the high point of every business year. It was a gathering of the rich and powerful and the year round hopefuls who desperately wanted to get in with the big boys. The Hall was lavishly decorated and would intimidate a lesser person, but as it were, everyone here was worth his or her salt. Each had his feet firmly on the ground and even if they didn't, they bluffed it. It was the place to see and be seen, network and do everything business oriented, and sometimes, otherwise.

The Hall was gradually filling up with people and the murmur of voices was fast becoming a shouting fest as men who pretended to like each other said very loud hellos and clapped each other on the back, and women who came to gossip huddled in corners, whispering about every last person that walked in or walked past.

And for the millionth time, Jai cursed himself for being here. It was one of those things they attended as a family. His parents, Jigyasa and Aditya and Ranveer were all here. Anu would come too but she was in school and her parents had forbidden her from leaving her studies. Natchiket wasn't here so if he wanted to sneak out, he would probably get caught. However, upside, he knew she would be here tonight. Yes, Bani Dixit would be here tonight. With her family of course, but what did it matter? At least he would get to see her.

He glanced impatiently at his wrist watch. Where the hell were they? It was well past seven and they were running late. He was getting tired of making small talk with all these people. He glanced at the doorway again for the hundredth time, then at the man who was pompously informing the little group of six he was in, how much profit they had made in the last year, and the number of charities they had donated how much to… frankly he was getting sick of it. He was about to excuse himself and walk away from the group when a whisper reached him from another group.

"There they are, the Dixits," a gossipy looking woman whispered audibly.

"I say, that man has it good," her friend said, "Look at the daughters he has. I'm sure suitors must be beating down their doors with proposals."

"Thought it was supposed to be the other way round," the first woman said.

"Not with daughters like…."

The rest of their conversation died out of Jai's hearing as he turned towards the door and indeed this time was rewarded by the sight of Bani and her family. Lord, she was a sight to behold! The gown she had picked out did her justice. It flattered all that needed flattering and accentuated what needed accentuating. Wow, he glanced round the room and noted with pride that most male gazes were fixed on the family that had just entered the hall. They were all there, Nishikant, Kiran, Bani, Rano, and who the hell was that with them? He frowned. Who was he and what was he doing holding on to both Bani and Rano. Worse still, what the hell was he saying to make her laugh like that? Was he here with her? Or Rano? Who the hell was he?!

He grabbed a drink off a passing tray and knocked it back irritably, his eyes not leaving Bani and the man.

"Is it just me or does Jai Walia look like he's about to murder me?" Jeet whispered to Rano.

Rano cautiously turned to where he was indicating and at the look on Jai's face, turned a smile on Jeet, "Oh yes. I'll bet he's wondering who the hell you are and what you're doing with my sister."

"But I'm here with you," he frowned.

"Of course you are dear," she winked at him, "But he doesn't know that."

Jeet looked at her closely, "You're enjoying this aren't you?"

"Immensely," she grinned.

Bani was trying her best not to give away the fact that she had seen him standing there and watching her. She tried to act as normal as possible but she could feel his eyes boring into her back. She smiled at the lady and her husband….what was their name again? Pandey. Yes, that was it. The Detergent people.

"You seem so young," the woman said.

"Well don't let that fool you," she said with a pleasant smile, "I'm older and tougher than I look."

"I'll say," her husband agreed, having head a thing or too about her and the scandal that was in the paper a while ago. Something to do with Walia and some project.

"Tushar!" the woman motioned to a young man who was not particularly good looking but you could immediately see that he had a warm heart, "Miss Dixit, I'd like you to meet my son, Tushar Pandey."

She smiled at the man and extended her hand, "Nice to meet you Tushar."

"The pleasure is all mine," he said, raising her hands to his lips.

"How about the two of you get talking while we go see the Kapoors. I hear their daughter Manjeet just put to bed again," Mrs. Pandey said, pulling her husband away.

"Could you be any more subtle?" Mr. Pandey's voice though hushed, drifted to the two people they left behind as they walked away.

"I take it this is a usual thing," Bani said to an embarrassed Tushar.

"You have no idea," he said with a tired shake of his head, causing Bani to laugh.

"And the success rate?" she asked.

"They dumped me on you," he said, "What do you think the rate is?"

She laughed again, "I'm sorry."

"Oh worse things have happened," he said conversationally, motioning for a waiter to get drinks, "I've just learned to go with the flow rather than fight with my Mum. She only gets worse."

"At least it's not like they always try to force alliances down our throats like in the olden days."

"Hear hear," Tushar raised his glass and they clinked, smiling at each other.

Jai watched from a distance as Bani chatted to Tushar. What the hell was going on with her now? He had seen Mrs. Pandey's none too subtle attempt to pair Bani up with her son, and Bani seemed to be enjoying it! What the hell did they have to smile about? He'd met Tushar before… the guy was a bore! What could he say to possibly make her smile…laugh even! He hadn't stayed all this time to watch this nonsense take place.

"Make that two people Jai Walia is going to kill," Jeet said to Rano.

"Huh?" Rano was confused as his comment didn't tally with what they were talking about.

"Over there," he motioned to where Bani was standing with Tushar, laughing at something the guy had said.

Rano looked from there and followed his nod again to where Jai was standing, watching Bani and Tushar as a lion would watch its prey before it sprang and attacked. He actually looked deadly.

"Wow, I don't think he knows he's staring," she said, taken aback by the sheer jealousy on his face, not to mention anger.

She looked around the room to see if anyone else noticed what was going on, and sure enough, she saw Jigyasa watching with a look of total surprise on her face. She was tapping her husband now, no doubt to point out what she was seeing.

"I wonder what that means," she said finally.

"In my experience…"

"Which is limited."

"Stop doing that," he complained, "You always cut me off when I'm…"

"I'm sorry dear," she said, before realizing she had just done it again, and dissolved into giggles, "No, I'm sorry. I'm listening to you."

He gave her what was supposed to be a reprimanding look and continued, "I think he really likes her. He just doesn't know how much."

"I think so too," Rano said a little more seriously, "Do you think he's capable of loving her?"

"But of course," he said, "He just needs to open his eyes and see what's right in front of him."

"From your lips to God's ears!" she said.

At exactly eight, they were seated and the programme began. There were performances by dance troupes, song renditions from Debojit and it was all glitz and glamour. The presentation of awards began, with categories for ranging from philanthropist of the year to Business man of the year. For the fourth year running, Jai walked away with the award for Midas Touch. Businessman of the year had gone to a woman, Sunheri Bhosale. The applause had been thunderous as the woman mounted the stage to receive the award, unable to speak for the first few minutes as she battled tears. Ironically though he was not expecting it, Aparajit Deb had accepted a Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf of his father who had founded Deb Memorial Hospital and in recognition of the work he had continued to do after his father's demise. It really was an emotional night. Rano had subconsciously reached out and held Karuna's hand as she watched her son receive such an honor for not just his work, but for what his father began.

After the ceremony, they settled down to dinner which was as usual, a sumptuous affair as the organizers spared no expense. Each year they tried to outdo themselves with the different kinds of dishes from different parts of the world. The hall settled into a friendly atmosphere for small talk and jokes all around.

Jigyasa was watching Jai, who was absently picking at the food on his plate. He had been doing that since they sat down. It was impossible for him to watch Bani now, as their tables were away from each other and more so because The Dixits were somewhere behind them.

She turned to Aditya and whispered, "He's been at it all night."

"I know, but I don't understand any of it."

"He's been looking at her with so much… so much…"

"Jealousy?" Aditya suggested.

"Yes!" she snatched at his choice of word, "What if he really does like her?"

"And you base this on what?"

"Well, actions speak louder than words," she said.

"What are you two whispering about?" Uday frowned at them from the head of the table.

"Fish!" Jigyasa said quickly.

Aditya raised his brow in a 'you've got to be kidding' expression.

She shrugged, best I could come up with, she thought.

Bani was aware of Jai watching her and funny enough it felt good. It was a lovely feeling because to her it meant he knew she was there. He had been watching her intently since the moment she came in and all through dinner...when he could that is. Well, that had been the reason she was dressed to the nines. Even her father had made an offhanded comment as to how she looked different from every other time they had gone out. She had paid extra attention to everything she had chosen for tonight, and she was enjoying the effects of it all.

A slow waltz was playing and out of nowhere, Tushar Pandey appeared at her side.

"Care to dance?" he asked.

She turned a wide smile on him, "I was beginning to wonder where you went off to. And yes, I would love to dance."

He held out his hand, "Shall we?"

She placed her hand in his, "Indeed we shall. After all, I wouldn't want to be the one to wipe that smile off your mother's face."

He glanced at his mother and saw she was indeed beaming widely, "At least let her have one thing to smile about tonight."

They got on the dance floor and began to move in rhythm to the song, swaying and gliding. He was such a good dancer, asserting himself as a leader and she gladly followed as he guided her from one end of the floor to another. It sort of dawned on them that people had stopped to watch them. Bani felt wonderful being able to dance again, and her smile was wide and her expression telling of her total ecstasy at having this dance with him. When the dance ended, applause greeted them to which they took a bow.

Only one person was neither smiling nor clapping. Jai Walia. He stood off to the far side of the room, watching through grim eyes. He hated the joy on her face and more especially as she seemed to be having a good time of it with that gargoyle of a man. He knocked back the contents of his glass in one go.

"My my, any more and you could blow a gasket."

He didn't have to turn around to know who it was. His rather unwelcome shadow, Pia Joshi. He slanted her a venomous glance and turned back to watching Bani.

"She seems to be the belle of the ball," Pia commented as another gentleman came up and asked her to dance again.

He said nothing but snatched another glass off the tray of a passing waiter.

"Earlier I thought she was with that Deb guy, but it seems she's quite taken with Tushar Pandey," Pia said, watching him now. His lips tightened and she knew she was getting warm, "When you think about it, his parents have been trying to pair him up for a long time and I think they just hit the jackpot."

Jai didn't have to move. She felt the anger emanating from him as he stood rigid, fire burning in his eyes, turning the clear grey eyes to dark pools of an approaching storm.

"I never thought I'd see the day when the Walia appeal fell flat on its face," she added with a final aim which immediately got her her desired reaction.

He turned to look at her, "Are you trying to annoy me Pia?"

"Far be it from me Jai," she mimicked an innocent expression, "I'm just stating the obvious. They do say the truth is bitter."

He gave her a guarded look and then that smile she knew so well shaped his lips, "Pia,Pia, Pia. Never forget who taught you everything you think you know."

With that he turned and walked away from her. She watched his retreating back and thought to herself, yes, he had taught her a lot of things but she knew men. And men were basically the same with that rare exception to the general rule, of which Jai was not one. He was going to think of what she had said just now and if she knew him well, it would spur him to disprove her logic that all his appeal was not having any effect on Bani Dixit. With any luck it would lead to the chain reaction she had intended to cause by reason of her calculated barbs.

Well, all she could do now was watch and see how the rest of the night played out. This was indeed exciting. Since she noticed Jai watching Bani with such a look of longing on his face it had actually scared her, she had been thinking of how to cause him to remember his humiliation at her hands without stating the obvious…yep, just like he had taught her, which was why she had no doubt he had recognized the move with ease. But she had become a better player for it, so she would sit back and watch the whole meltdown from a safe distance.

"You seem to be having more fun than all of us put together," Nishikant said, seeing his daughter's high color and bright eyes.

She smiled, "Well when you've had at least three proposals in one night and three dances, it starts to feel like the sixteenth century all over again," Bani said, her eyes sparkling.

"Did you say proposals?" Kiran asked in amusement.

"Mhmm," Bani nodded, "The most insistent coming from Mrs. Pandey."

"The detergent people?" Nishikant asked.

"Yep!" Bani chirped.

"Well, not that that's a bad choice," he nodded sagely.

"Oye, I'll have none of that," Bani warned both her parents, "And now I will take my leave before I get roped into more stuff I can't abide."

With a flourish, she turned and cut through the people milling around and made her way to the rear end of the room which opened up to a balcony which was luckily empty. She stood there letting the cool evening breeze cool her skin as she stood looking over the beautiful gardens with intricate lighting and the pool below her. She took a deep breath and released it in one go.

She felt rather than heard him come up.

"Quite a night you're having."

The silky smoothness of his voice washed over her and her skin broke out in goose bumps. It took all of her willpower not to turn. Rather, she looked over her right shoulder in acknowledgement of his statement.

"You think?"

"I think the whole room thinks so too," he was standing directly behind her now.

She said nothing.

"What was the need to do all that?" he asked when he saw she wasn't going to say anything else.

"Do what Jai?" she asked, still not facing him.

He grabbed her hand and turned her to face him, "I know you did all of those things knowing fully well I was watching," he said, his eyes getting darker with each second, "Trying to get me jealous?"

"And why would I do that?" she asked, her eyes dilating.

He smiled, "You don't have to pretend Bani, we both know the name of the game."

"I don't play games Jai, that's your thing."

"Not with you," he said, and let go off her to run his hands through his hair, "It's pointless… absolutely pointless."

She was watching him in confusion.

"I try to let go…try to walk away… then I see you tonight with that…" he gave an impatient motion towards the hall.

"I think… I think I should be getting back…."

She was about going past him but with an alien sound escaping him, he grabbed her upper arm and again spun her around to face him.

His gaze was intense and when he spoke, his voice sounded strained, "Forgive me…"

Before she had time to process what he meant, his hand wrapped around the back of her neck to hold her still as he dropped his lips to hers in a kiss. She was indeed surprised this time, but she did not push him away. She stood there in his embrace, letting him kiss her. She didn't resist as his lips moved with practiced expertise over hers in fluid motion, teasing and pulling. Her hands were holding on to him, reveling in the feel of him. She admitted to herself she had wanted him to kiss her again… just so if it never happened again, she would at least have the memory of tonight.

"Finally," they heard the voice through the maze of their passion for each other.

Bani jumped but he held her fast, refusing to let her go. They both turned and there stood Pia, a snide expression on her face.

"Should have known you would fall for the bait," she continued, "You didn't have to prove yourself to me Jai, it's obvious the Walia appeal still works wonders. As it is, she has the hots for you."

Bani looked at Jai in confusion. She didn't know what she expected to find but she only saw his passion for her in that moment…rather than acknowledge Pia he cupped her cheek again and resumed kissing her as though no one had spoken…as though they were the only ones on the balcony…in the whole building… like this was their night…their time. Yes, all theirs. She for the second time gave in to his kiss, loving the way he held her close to him. She heard Pia exhale in anger from a distance, as the kiss was doing things to her mind that she just couldn't explain. His hands just wouldn't stay still and kept molding her to him, closer and closer as the kiss deepened…

Again, she heard the curse Pia muttered and the distinct clicking of her heels as she walked away. Finally the kiss broke but neither one of them stepped apart. He touched his forehead to hers as they both caught their breaths…

"You tempt me so much Bani," he said in a hushed tone.

His breath warmed her already warm skin. She didn't know what to say and so quietly laid her head on his chest, listening to the erratic beat of his heart.

He held her away from him and looked her in the eye, "What does this mean Bani?"

She couldn't even form a coherent thought with what she saw brewing in his eyes. She could only shake her head in a bid to form a sentence.

"I don't know," she said finally.

"What do I do Bani?" he asked, his voice sounding tortured, "What do I do?"

She was even more confused now, and she pulled away from him, turning away, "I don't know Jai. You are too much of who you are and I can't do anything about that. I guess we're just going to have to leave things as they are."

"Can you?" he asked, coming to stand behind her again.

"I'll have to," she said weakly, "This isn't healthy at all."

"So we just let it go?" he asked as though it was the worst thing in the world.

"What would you have me do Jai?" she turned to face him, "There's too much wrong with this…" she indicated both of them.

"But Bani…"

"No!" she pulled away from his outstretched hand as he tried to hold her again, "I can't do this okay? I just can't…"

With that she pushed past him and fled from the balcony back into the hall. So intent was she on putting as much distance between her and Jai that she didn't see the form standing off to the side of the door, wearing a stricken expression.

In shock, Jigyasa turned to look at Jai who stood looking after Bani, a tight expression on his face. He turned away and ran a distracted hand through his hair in frustration. There was no way she could deny all that she had just seen…when Jai had followed Bani out onto the balcony, she had followed to make sure he didn't bother her. But by the time she got to the door, she saw them already engaged in a deep kiss with Pia standing just behind them, neither one acknowledging her. Finally Pia had stormed past her, throwing her a murderous glare as she walked past. What was the meaning of all this? Did it mean that they were already together, and that was why he kept watching her with all that jealousy? Why he looked like he wanted to kill everyone who came near her? Or was it that Bani was just putting a show of Jai bothering her? What was going on here? Looking at Jai now, from inside the doorway she thought she saw the frustration he was feeling. But frustration at what? Was he in love with her, for right in this moment, he didn't look like he was playing with her. He looked like he was truly affected by what had just happened.

Before he saw her, she retreated again into the hall, a frown creasing her brows. She had to speak to Aditya about this…now!

Brilliant comeback girl! No wonder I missed your updates so much.
Love the intensity of the JB scenes. Cant believe Pia and her games. Personally the most brilliant scene had to be when Pia walked in trying to create a rift and Jai went back to kissing Bani completely ignoring her. That scene was a masterpiece 👏
Am very happy with the way Bani is able to walk away from Jai. Even though she doesnt deny her feelings, she manages to hold her own. Am impressed. And Jai obviously is frustrated. So Jigs is in on the secret now. Cant wait to see how this pans out.
