A few days had passes since Mr. Walia he had turned down the candidate for the post. Bani was working full-time again. During these days it seemed like a world war was going on inside him. It was a war between his head and his heart. Every time when he would be thinking about the PA-incident his heart would be giving him a standing ovation for not letting Bani go, but his mind would curse him with every bad word he knew, or ever heard, for not hiring a perfectly capable PA and not being able to keep his promise of maintaining a distance.

Part 15

'Mr. Walia, can I come in?' Bani stood at the door waiting.

Mr. Walia looked up from his file. 'Yes Bani, please come in'

Bani handed him a big, brown envelope. 'This came in just now. It only had your name on it, nothing else, but I thought it could be important.'

Mr. Walia took the envelop.' Thank you Bani, uhmmmm……..Bani did you have lunch?'

'Not yet Mr. Walia, but I've brought lunch. Mai khalungi.' Bani left the room.

After two hours Bani again was seeking permission to enter Mr. Walia's office.

She knocked two times, but did not get any response. She knocked again, and again, and again, but no success. Bani wondered where he was, because she did not leave her desk and she did not see her boss leave his cabin.

Bani entered his cabin cautiously and peeked inside the cabin. He was sitting behind his desk, as if made of stone, with the brown envelop in his left hand, and a white paper in his right hand. Mr. Walia was staring at the paper continuously, with a ice cold look in his eyes. His facial expression was mixture of between shock and anger.

Bani walked up to his desk and carefully tapped on his shoulder.

'Mr. Walia……….Mr. Walia!'

Finally he looked up.

'Kya huwa hai? Sab thiek to hai na?' Bani asked in the same soft and concerned voice that once again send shivers down his spine. He felt a burning sensation on the part of his shoulder where Bani had touched him.

Composing himself, because the effect of the letter and the touch, Mr. Walia replied:

'It's nothing Bani, I'm fine.' Mr. Walia absentmindedly looked at his computer screen and started punching some tabs on the keyboard.

Bani put some files on his desk and walked away to return to her own desk.

She had opened the door when she looked back at her boss and said:

'Mr. Walia, agar koi baat hai to aap mujhse keh sakte hai. You can talk to me. I'll always be there for you.'

Mr. Walia saw her back retreat, and thought very hard about the meaning of her last phrase. It kept ringing in his head. 'I'll always be there for you.'

That weekend Bani could not stop thinking about Mr. Walia, and the letter he received on friday? Why did he get so tense like that. She hated herself for bringing him bad news for the second time. The first time being in London. Bani spent her Sunday afternoon in Walia Mansion. Her sisters were not back from their honeymoons, and because of that everybody wanted to talk to her, and spoil her. She was the centre of attention that afternoon. For a while she forgot about the office.

Mr. Walia went on a small business trip out of town on Friday night. He spent his weekend thinking about the letter. He had handled the letter like he did always, but nonetheless it still would bother him. More than that, every time he would think about the letter he could hear Bani's voice load and clear. 'I'll always be there for you.'

He knew, or rather convinced himself, she did not mean it. On Sunday he returned, tired as ever, but also mentally drained from the war going on inside him.

Mr. Walia decided to go to the office. He was not in the mood to face Nikita, and frankly speaking he did not have the energy left to do so. Spending the night in the office would be the best option. Coming out of the airport Mr. Walia walked to the taxi stand. He did not inform his driver about his arrival, and specially now he did not want to see any familiar face. Mr. Walia got into a taxi and gave the driver the address. He took his coat off and made himself comfortable.

Suddenly he noticed they were passing by a building. It was a know building to him. Mr. Walia drove past by it a few times with Aditya, and Aditya had cursed the whole building, and the builders, as if they were the reason Bani moved out. Bani lived there.

Mr.Walia heard himself say: 'Bhaiyya, gari yahan rokna.'

The driver looked at him, raising his eyebrows. This was not the address his passenger wanted to go to, but the driver heeded the request and stopped the car.

Mr. Walia stepped out of the car, took his coat, gave the driver some money, and walked off. The amount he gave the driver was too much, but it seemed like Mr. Walia did not care about anything anymore. He was walking like he was hypnotized.

'Are sahib, aap ka saamaan! Are sahib, apna saamaan to lete jaaye!!!' The driver was taking the luggage off the top of the car.

Mr. Walia looked back and saw the driver rush towards him with Mr. Walia's suitcase.

He mumbled a soft 'Shukriya' and walked into the building.

The watchman asked him who he wanted to meet. The only thing mr. Walia could whisper was 'Bani'. The watchman gave Mr. Walia the directions to Bani's apartment. 5th floor, apartment number 17.

Mr.Walia stood infront of the door of Bani's apartment, his hands raised, ready to knock, when retreated his hand. Before anything could happen he turned around ready to go away, to see Bani walking into the corridor. She just arrived from her visit to Walia Mansion.

'Mr. Walia aap yahaan?' Bani smiled. Naturally she was surprised to see her Boss here.

'Aap kab waapas aye?'

A very soft 'Abhi aaya.' passed his lips.

Bani could sense something was wrong. His appearance, his being here, his mood. It was totally wrong. Bani did not dare to ask if something was wrong. She opened the door and asked him to come in. Mr. Walia took his suitcase and hesitantly walked through the door.

Bani took off her shoes and put down her purse on the dining table. Mr. Walia just walked around in her living room. Bani was following his moves.

Mr. Walia looked at the pictures Bani put up on the wall behind the sofa. Then he slowly walked toward the mandir across the room and stared at the murti's. He blinked a few times and turn around to look, or rather stare at the view outside the window.

Something was definitely wrong.

'Mr. Walia aap kuch lenege?'

Mr. Walia did not respond.

'Mr Walia, aap kuch lenge?'

Again no response.

Bani made a cup of coffee, walked up to him and handed him the cup.

He took the cup, and returned to stare out of the window.

'Mr. Walia, kuch huwa hai kya? Do you want to talk?'

Again no response.

'Maybe he doesn't want to talk' Bani thought, 'at least he is here, instead of somewhere else. I don't want to imagine what he might do to himself in this state. Maybe he will feel better with company around him.'

Bani returned to here kitchen, and prepared a light dinner for both of them. She ate, sitting on her sofa. He nibbled some, staring out of the window.

After dinner, Bani made him another cup of coffee. Again he drank everything, in complete silence, fixated on the emptiness he stared into.

The sun had set. Bani turned on the TV and was watching silently at the moving figures, not being able to concentrate. She had taken a shower, and changed her clothes. When she returned Mr. Walia was still staring out of the window.

Bani sat on the sofa, pretending to watch the TV, he was still standing, staring and saying nothing.

Bani woke up the next morning, in an uncomfortable position. Startled she looked around. The TV was still on. She fell asleep on the sofa. No one was standing near the window.

'Hey Bhagwaan, Mr. Walia!!!!'

Bani jumped up from the sofa. She opened the door to her bedroom. It was empty. Same as the bathroom, and the guestroom. His suitcase and coat were gone.

He had left at 4 in the morning, a while after Bani fell asleep on the sofa.
