It wasn't difficult to get Ganga admitted into a good school. Daksh paid her fees telling Bani it was a loan and she could repay him when she had the money. With Ganga going to school Bani could now concentrate on getting some work. She scanned the newspaper, circling the job ads of interest. Most of the jobs were entry level jobs, but anything was better than nothing. Plus for the time being she did not want executive jobs for which she was well qualified, as she wanted to maintain low profile.
A week later Bani was able to secure a job as office clerk in a small accounting office. The salary wasn't great but she could manage with it for a while and the owner Mr Dalal, an elderly gentleman had owned this business for the last 35 years had assured her a raise in three months if she proved capable of handling the work. To celebrate her job offer, Daksh, Ganga and masi took Bani out for a meal at a small restaurant nearby. They looked like many of the typical families enjoying their meal at the restaurant. After the meal they took a stroll through nearby street browsing at the small shops selling everything from food to clothes and electrical gadgets. It was Ganga who tugged at Daksh's arm and pointed at the black Merc speeding away. A small face could be seen looking out the window. "Mama, look that black car, I am sure I saw Varun bhaiya in that car."
Daksh shook his head, "I don't think so Ganga. I am sure if it was your friends they would have stopped to meet you. There are a lot of black cars like that in this city."
Not to be so easily deterred, Ganga insisted it was Varun she saw and that she would somehow find a way to meet them. Daksh looked helplessly at the stone faced Bani. He could feel trouble brewing if Ganga did not get her way to see Veer and Varun.
The first few days in her new job were very hectic for Bani as she learned to handle the work on different accounts handled by Mr Dalal and his two assistants, and elderly lady named Hattie DaSilva and young man named Sushil Mehta, who had recently becomed chartered accountant. Hattie trained Bani to do journal entries, balancing accounts and doing up daily reports. At home Ganga seemed to love her new school and made many new friends, particularly she seemed to have a best friend named Vidya, who wasn't very keen on doing work at school and often got into trouble for not paying attention to the teachers. It was at school one day that Ganga spotted Meera waiting outside a black Merc. Ganga ran up to her and hugged her, "Hi Meera aunty."
Meera looked at the happy face of Ganga and asked with surprise, "Ganga what are you doing here? When did you come here?" Ganga told her about having to leave Meerut because the thakurian had kicked them out of their home and how they came to Mumbai to stay with her mama until her mother could save up money to rent their own place.
Ganga asked curiously, "What are you doing here Meera aunty? Did you come to see someone?"
"No, I have come to pick my niece up, Vidya. Her mother couldn't come today." Meera replied whilst looking over her at the school children pouring out.
"Vidya! She was behind me, now where did she go?" Ganga looked around and not seeing Vidya she told Meera, "Aunty wait I will go and find her. She is probably messing around with couple of friends."
Ganga ran inside to find Vidya chatting away with couple of girls from their class. Her bag flung on the floor and her jacket trailing Vidya was giggling away. Ganga tugged at vidya's ponytail, "You are standing here laughing, while someone is waiting for you outside."
Vidya brushed her comment aside, "Oh, its only mom, she will wait."
Putting her hands on hips, Ganga scowled at her, "It's not your mom, it's Meera aunty!"
Vidya hurriedly picked up her bag, "Meera aunty. Why is she here?" Vidya almost ran with Ganga hurrying after her.
"Aunty where is mom." Vidya asked as she reached the car.
"Mom has gone with dadi to doctor and so I came to pick you up. Now let's go as I have to pick them up too."
Vidya turned to Ganga, "Why don't you come home with me to play Ganga? We can drop you home later can't we Meera aunty?"
"No I can't come without asking my mom. I don't know Mumbai and masi will get mad if I don't get home quick. But maybe I will ask mom and if she says yes then I will come." Ganga answered cheerfully.
The car drove as Ganga made her way home. She looked wistfully at other kids being picked by their parents wishing Bani could do the same. Then realizing that they were not in the same position as the other family, her mother had to work to pay for her school, Ganga walked the short distance to her home.
Next morning when Ganga was leaving for school, she asked Bani if she could go to her friends
House. Bani asked, "Which friend ?"
Ganga, "meri nayi friend, Vidya. She is very nice mom and I promise I won't stay away too long. Please mom, there is no one here to play with.' Bani looked at angelic face of Ganga, it was true here there was no one of her age to play with. In Meerut there were no shortage of kids to play with her and everyone in the chawl and dabba treated her as one of their own. She nodded her head, "You can go but you must phone masi and tell her when you are at your friend's house and when you leave."
Jumping up and down and hugging Bani, Ganga planted a wet kiss on her cheeks. Masi looked at the mother and daughter hugging and her eyes misted. Ganga reminded her of when Jai was small…overly hyper and very loving towards all. She prayed silently that no evil eyes befell on both of them, to keep the two of them happy.
Vidya was excited when Ganga told her she could come for a short time to her house. The whole day she was bubbly and little overactive in the school. The teachers wondered why the girl who was so studious in the class was little distracted today.
As soon as the school ended Vidya and Ganga ran out to the waiting car to take them to Walia mansion. Ganga who had never traveled in a luxury car and who had not seen much of the city, could hardly contain her excitement and wonder as the car maneuvered itself in and out of traffic. The car stopped at the gate of the mansion for the security guard to open the door and Ganga gaped open-mouthed at the large mansion in front of her. It was even bigger than the thakur's haveli in Meerut. She took in the large gardens, the cars in the parking spot as they approached the main entrance. Alighting she took hold of Vidya's hand and said, "You leave in such a big house!" Vidya giggled, "it's not really big. Do you know how many people live in the house, lots of us." She pulled Ganga's hand, "Come on! Let's get inside so we can play."
Raashi hugged Vidya and recognizing Ganga, "So this is your friend. How come you are here Ganga?"
"We came to stay with my mama. My mother couldn't keep our old house so we left." Ganga looked at the phone and asked if she could call her masi and let her know she was here. Raashi dialed the number for her and Ganga told masi she had arrived safely at Vidya's house. Raashi sent the girls up to put their bags away and wash up before having snack. Vidya room was done up in pink colour with the usual frilly bedcovers and curtains and stacks of soft toys. She threw her bag down and opened the cupboard to take a clothes out to change. Ganga looked amazed at the cupboard full of clothes. There were jeans, dresses and tops as well as party clothes.
After they had washed their hands and faces they ran downstairs to find Raashi had laid out milk and cookies for them on the table. Quickly gulping down the milk and cookies they went back upstairs to play with Vidya's toys and games. It was half an hour later Veer and Varun walked in to Vidya's room. They saw Ganga's back and said, "So you have a new friend Vids."
Recognizing Veer's voice, Ganga turned around and leapt up, "Veer bhaiya! You live here too."
Veer and Varun grinned at her, "Hey Ganga. How did you get here? How did you meet Vids?"
Vidya feeling a little left out, "Ganga goes to same school as me. We are in the same class. And she is my best friend."
"Well she is our friend too. We met her first in Meerut. You got sick and couldn't come." Varun pulled Vidya's ponytail. "We want to play with Ganga too." Annoyed at having her hair tugged, Vidya pushed Varun away, "You get out of my room. You are not allowed here. We want to play alone."
Veer folded his arms and grinned, "We won't to play too. You can't make us go away."
Vidya now pushing Veerm "Veer bhaiya please go away. We won't to play girl stuff. You boys don't like playing with dolls and soft toys…"
Veer not shifting, "Not going away. We want to play with Ganga."
Vidya now getting one of tantrum screamed, "Maaaaaaaaaaaaaa!"
