When Jai met Bani
prt 1
It has been raining cats and dogs for a month. Bani pushed back her duppaatta and walked quickly to the bus stand. The time was 3 past 20. She looked at her worn out watch. The black strap was in grey color . She clutched the file to her chest and stood quietly in a corner. The road was adorned with puddles. Little children splashed water when they passed by. Bus stand was dripping wet in spite of the renovation of the small roof. The bus came and most of the people rushed in front. Bani stood to her post and waited for the bus that would take her to her street. A moment later a black Mercedes drove to the side with grunting and puffing noise. Bani's attention turned to the car. The car jerked and stopped. A moment later the door opened and a man in suit stepped out to the pouring rain. He placed his hand on his head and looked around.
Bani notice the car and the man and thought wow what a car and he must be filthy rich. She saw the man look around and close the door of the car. She saw him stare at the rood in thoughts. He did not want to spoil his rich cloths in the puddles. He took cautious step to cross the road and walk in to the near by garage. Two street boys passed him and splashed water from the puddles. Bani couldn't hold back the laughter she laughed as the man stared after the two boys. Who walked away with out much of an apology.
Jai grunted under his breath his expensive suit was soiled. He got into the bus stand and looked at the shut garage. He saw a girl and an old woman. He wanted his car to get repaired and that too soon. His phone battery was low and he couldn't reach any one for help. He turned his attention to the girl her face was with full of smiles who trying to hide her smile when he approached her. 'Excuse me Miss have you any idea why this garage is closed at this time of the day….'
The girl looked at him with saucer eyes and said, 'Sir the garages isn't closed'.
'It isn't ... but the shutter is closed.
Bani couldn't conceal the smile… 'The wind blew and the shutter fell from the lock…'
The shutter fell..' he couldn't get it. He had seen the garage for past few years and he had never seen it shut. How come it was shut precisely when he wanted their service?
'It was a new shutter they have bought sir two days ago… they were renovating the garage…. If you want to use it you can just go and knock on the door….'
'Yes thank you……' he turned from her and stepped to the pavement which was covered with full of water. A truck drove past him splashing water all over him.
Bani heard him swear. She looked away controlling hard not to laugh.
A month later
'God!' he swore looking out side the window. It has been consecutively raining for three days. All his work had to be stopped. If the situation goes the way it is Mumbai will be flooding in no time. Jai and few of his staffs had been stranded in the building. There was no way to get out in this weather. He stared out side the window they were surrounded by pool of water. He walked back to his seat and stretched his feet up.
Few minutes later his assistant Raman stuck his head at the door.
'Yes Raman?'
'How are you doing sir?' he asked walking into his plush room.
Jai threw him an exasperated look.
Raman had never seen his boss sit idly ever. He was always busy with either phone or his laptop.
'Is there any way to get out of this building?' Jai asked. He had always been a man in charge and this particular situation he did not know what to do.
Raman shook his head helplessly.
'I can't sit idly here Raman…' pausing for a moment he asked, 'well there was supposed to be an interview today.. did any one make it?'
Raman looked at his boss with a smile. 'Yes sir 3 men and a girl.'
"A girl?' he frowned.
Raman hid his smile.
'Well how did it go?' he wanted to know.
'Er we haven't conducted it sir. The power was out and ….' Raman did not know what else to say.
'How could you be so irresponsible?' flared jai. 'they had come here in this weather and you did not bother to….. where are they? Are they still here?'
'Yes sir.'
Jai couldn't believe his ears. 'Send them in here one by one…..'
Jai was partly relived. He could kill his boredom. The net was jammed and he couldn't use his lap top. The building was running with inverter it could be any minute the power would go off comnpletely. A slow smile formed on his lips.
Few minutes later the candidates walked in to his cabin. Jai liked the second guy. He was suitable for the job. The girl did not walk in for the interview.
Raman walked in again after few minutes. 'how was it sir?'
'good.. one chap .. he is good … well there was no girl…'
'No girl sir?'
'You heard me….' He was impatient…
'where did she go then?' muttered Raman. 'I have asked her to meet you.. she was….'
They were interrupted by a soft knock on the door. The door clicked opened and a girl stuck her head. "may I come in….' she asked in her soft voice.
Raman turned his attention on her. "Where have you been?'
'I .. er lost my way…' she said slowly. Saying that, she turned her attention towards the man, who sat behind the mahogany desk. Bani stared at him. She had seen him somewhere.. She couldn't recall but where…
Raman excused and left them alone.
'Take your seat..' he wave his hand. She walked in and took the seat. She put the file on the table. Jai took the file and went through the pages. He put them back on the desk and asked. 'Why do you want to work here Ms Dixit?'
She took a moment to answer him. 'I need a job and your ad came by..'
He was impressed with her honesty. There was something about her he felt familiar. He had seen her some where. 'Well Ms Dixit.. You are a fresher and we need an experienced person…. I am sorry.'
'Oh No….. She had been sitting in this office for past 5 hrs hoping to get this job. She needed the job and that too soon. There was no point in waiting for her father to act responsible and find a permanent job. Bani got up disheartened.
Jai saw her face crumble. Well she is young she can easily get job anywhere. He has no time or patience s to handle inexperienced staffs.
Bani turned her face towards him and said, 'Sir why don't you give me a chance. Give me a chance to prove myself….'
'Ms Dixit my firm has no time or place to train new people I am ……
'Oh really…. The firm could attract only few people for this wretched post.'
She muttered under her breath.
'Did you say something?' he asked frowning.
'No sir .. I was talking to myself. Thank you very much'.
JAI looked at her interestingly.
She walked to the door muttering to her self. "pagal thi mein itni barish mein ghar se nikli who bhi is noukri keliyien… kam se kam us thakleef keliyein muje yeh job mithi….' She felt like crying….
'aap ne kuch kahan?' he asked getting up from his seat.
'Nahin…' she walked hurriedly and shut the door. Bani did not know what else to do. She walked to the reception. The lady at the reception smiled at her. She walked to the exit and the guard stopped her. 'Bahar nahin jasakthi…' said the security. 'poora pani bhara hua hein…..' bani walked back to the reception. She looked heaven wards. Bani did not want to think of her mother. She would be worried sick. She had been against Bani going out in this weather. All her mothers' pleadings had gone on deaf ears. She could imagine her mom pacing up and down in her house waiting for Bani. She looked at the time. It was 30 minutes past 5. The day was getting dark and Bani's fear reached no boundary. The rain hadn't stopped. Mumbai was flooding she was trapped in a building where she had no place to be. The wretched man would not give her job… Bani didn't want to think further. Her head would explode any moment. The light dimmed and went off. She heard the people at the reception swear. Bani sat down in the lobby. She did not know what to do. She would wait for some one to take her out of this building. She was after all a woman. She would wait patiently.
In another few minutes Bani saw the area lit with candle lights. She stared at the candles. It did give a romantic glow in the room. She did not have anything better to do other than muse over things. She would give herself the liberty to think about romance. Bani took a deep sigh at the thought. She did not know when she fell asleep. She snapped opened her eyes in semidarkness. She sat up instantly gathering her thoughts.. she heard people.
If the rain continues the way it is.. We will have to spend the night in here….' She heard a male voice.
Bani screamed in panic.
