Part Two


Anyone who says sunshine brings happiness has never danced in the rain




Bani looked at the mirror and fixed her bindi. She checked her appearance one last time. She was wearing a silk red kameez which hardly reaches her knees and a churidar. The kameez was simple with small bead works in it, but the churidar was gorgeous with all over work on it, the new trend, Bani mused. She has pinned her dupatta to one side and let it fall all over her right hand.


While her delicate ears were adorned with long beaded earring, her hands were bare expect a bracelet on one hand. The infamous JB pendant was hanging from a gold chain around her neck. As she put on the heels, she cursed, why I'm not a little bit taller? I hate to wear such big heels.


It was Sarika's wedding today. The Aaqd was going to be held on the morning and the other marital rituals were scheduled in the evening. The reception was dated the next day.


Sarika is one of Bani's closest friends since school and off course the most intelligent one. Sarika was realistic, practical and unromantic. As Bani put her cell phone in the purse and left the home after kissing her aunt on the cheek she wondered, how come Sarika is the first to get married amongst the gang? She mused to herself, I'm having an affair since I was in class 10, it could've been me. She blushed at the thought of her and Jai's marriage. Pri fell in love when she's 10, it could've been her as well. Bani's mind saddened a bit thinking of Pri and her love. Off course, it could Not have been Rano, the bookworm, I'm never going to marry girl, Bani laughed loudly. She started the car and went off.


When Bani arrived, the house was full of people and chaos. She managed to ignore all the glances she got from the crowd, admires from the male crowd and envy from the female group. She quickly went to Sarika's room. She found that Pri, Rano and Anu were already seated there.


But what took her attention was Sarika herself. She was dressed in a simple yet elegant burgundy saree. She has not worn much jwellery, just a chain and ear rings and couple of bangles on each hand. There was light make up on her face. She looked up and smiled at Bani. "Don't you know it's a sin to look prettier than the bride?" she asked playfully.




Bani smiled at her and sat beside her, "Are you nervous Sari?"


"I must be one hell of a liar if I say that I ain't." Sarika confessed. Bani looked at her other friends; all were dressed in salwar suits, neither too gorgeous, nor too simple. They were all grinning. They sat there when Sarika's Mom came and announced that the groom side and the Qaji (the priest who performs the marital rituals) have just arrived.


Bani along with the other woman watched from behind the curtains, as the Qaji read the wedding details towards the groom and the witnesses. Then the Kabeen (the amount of money the groom agrees to give the bride in case the wedding faulters) was confirmed by both bride and groom side. The Qaji solemnly asked the groom Asif-ul-Haque if he accepts the marriage with Saika Haidar, daughter of Omar Haidar, along with the Kabeen of 10 Laks. The groom said that he accepts. The same question was asked thrice and the groom replied positively thrice.


Then the Qaji made him sign the Kabeennama (the legal documents which confirms the marriage and the amount of Kabeen) along with two witnesses of the process. Then he took the signature of Groom's paternal uncle who played the Ukil Baba (legal father) of the groom. As the room filled with soft noise, the Qaji got up and he was soon led to the room the Bride was seated.


Bani and all her friends stood behind her to provide the bride mental support. Sarika's Mom sat beside her and held her hand. The same question was asked to her, if she agrees and accepts this marriage. Sarika hesitated a bit; her mother pressed her hand and squeezed it. Sarika softly said, Kabul (I accept) . The witnesses looked at each other confusingly. The Qaji requested her to say more clearly. At last when she accepted the marriage thrice and has signed the Kabeennama, two witnesses from the girl's side also signed the paper along with the girl's Ukil Baba. When everything was signed perfectly, an echo of Alhamdulillah was heard all around. The Qaji offered a prayer for the happiness and the blessing of the new couples. Everyone joined him. After that, the Qaji solemnly asked to serve the Khorma (dried date) to the people as an age old tradition of the Muslim marriage.


As the sweetness of Khormas filled everyone's mouth, they whole heartily prayed the happiness, love and sweetness in the lives of the newly wedded couple.

After the groom side left, everyone congratulated Sarika and her friends teased her. Sarika was blushing like anything which was very unusual.




Pri: Wah! What a scene? Where's my camera?


Rano: Don't tease her, we'll see what happens to you when you got married.




Bani: Saru, how does it feel to be married? Enlighten us darling, neither of us has any experience.


Anu: Yaar, try to understand, what kind of experience are you talking about? Experience to aj raat ko hone wala hain, kyon Sari?


As Sarika turned crimson, they all burst into laughter. Sarika remained quiet for sometime and then spoke up, "I never knew, I'm going to marry first among us."


Bani: To tell you the truth, I was wondering this myself quite a while ago.




Rano: That why you are not the lucky one, right?


They all giggled as Anu sighed, "See what life turns into? Sarika is getting married even before she's finished her graduation and me…"


Anu has done graduate in English and is now serving as a teacher in a primary school. She doesn't want to study any further and is all set and ready to get married. Only problem is that, she doesn't seem to find her Mr Right available.




Sarika's Mom came, "Enough of giggling and talking girls, it's time to go to the parlour."




The girls were soon getting up and getting things ready that will be necessary - the bridal saree, the make up items etc. Sarika took a quick shower and changed in a simple cotton salwar kameez. It was settled that Bani and Pri will take Sarika to the parlour and will stay with her. When Sarika's make up will be over, Anu and Rano will go to the parlour and bring her back home. While Bani and Pri will head to their respective houses to get themselves ready.


Bani and Pri couldn't help but wink at each other when they found that Sarika was putting on her dupatta covering her head. She's already acting like a Bahu of the house.


The beauty parlour took a long time. They made the bride's hair, enriched her mehendi design with glitter matching the outfit she's going to wear, put her make up on, helped her wear the saree beautifully. At last when she was ready, both Bani and Pri gasped.




"Gosh you look beautiful," said Pri in wonder.




"Fantastic, our Dulha raja is going to faint when he'll see you." Said Bani.


Rano and Anu soon entered and they also praised the bride. As they left with Sarika, Bani and Pri sighed.


"Sarika is looking pretty, but what about us? Do you know we are looking like hell?" questioned Bani to Pri.




Pri chuckled, "You don't need to look beautiful today Bani, your day will come."




Will it? Bani wondered inwardly and was totally ashamed of the thrill she felt imagining what it would be like to be Jai's bride.

Hey it was nice as usual. A quite clear description of the wedding rituals.
But u know my mind is still haunting with the very thoughts of Bani coming to know abt Pri's lover..Thats going to be a real hell..
Anu is the usual bubbly girl who is waiting for her maharaja still..Nice friendship.. 👏 👏 👏

The wedding was described beautifully. And the way all the friends gathered and teased the bride was realistic 😃 It happens all the time.

And its but natural for Bani to be wishfully thinking of her own wedding to Jai 😳 I hope that happens in the near future and he does not get saddled with Pri. That would be most unfortunate and sad. 😭 But I have a good feeling now that maybe we won't have to see our jodi separate for long.
