Chapter Eight
The Mall
The Ibn Battuta Mall: a mall that had the essence of six countries in one spot or under one roof. China, India, Persia, Egypt, Tunisia and Andalusia made up the beautiful Ibn Battuta Mall. It was the six countries that Ibn Battuta the explorer traveled and left an impact on him. It was six different malls, representing different country together, under on roof. It really was a break taking view from outside, an architectural delight.
The driver dropped them off at the China Mall, as its first in line, followed by India, Persia, Egypt, Tunisia and last Andalusia.
The China mall has a small beautiful Chinese garden, and the mall is an imposing red building with dark wooden roof, just like in ancient China. On entering the mall one was take in by the beautiful interiors that did justice to the out side building. It was made up of bright colours, red, blues, green and gold. The whole China court is built in the style of 14th century China.
On the side were shops, one was the famous furniture shop Pan Emirates and the right was the electronic shop DG Sharaf. The passage led to the main pavilion or center court, where there were restaurants and in the center was the display of a Chinese Junk cargo ship wrecked in the middles as a center display with a fountain.
It was such a beautiful sight that Bani and Jai could not do anything but admire the view and the ceiling too that had such wonderful detailing.
"Wow …my god!!!!! It's …….fantastic. Really so beautifully done" said Bani all awed and staring at her surroundings.
"Yes, it really is. My friend was not joking when she said you should visit the Ibn Battuta Mall" said Jai.
Bani, intrigued with the friend being a she asked "What's your friend's name, if you don't mind my asking?"
"Ah...it's Krishna (yes, yes the author could not but use herself in the ff and be Jai's friend who told him to visit this mall), she lives her in Sharjah with her hubby, and could not make it to my New Year Party like the rest that you met" replied Jai.
Bani couldn't understand that why did she feel so relieved to hear that his friend was married. She shook her head, and thinks to herself why, when she was brought out from her thoughts by Jai.
"Bani, are you hungry? Would you like to have an early dinner?" asked Jai.
"No, I am not hungry Sir, but if you are ..." replied Bani.
"No am not hungry at all, and Bani please stop calling me sir all the time. You can call me Jai" said Jai
"Yes sir" said Bani. Jai looked at her, on her using sir and Bani hurriedly said "I mean Jai"
Jai gave her an approving look and asked "Want to watch a movie? Lets have a look, shall we" guiding Bani and himself towards the cinemas.
This China court houses a 21- screen Grand Megaplex/cinemaplex. Ibn Batutta Mall is the first ever mall in the whole of U.A.E, to have IMAX theaters, the most thrilling cinematic experience on earth.
They together looked at the list of movies showing but Bani was not interested as she wanted to explore the mall.
"Anything catches your interest" asked Jai.
"Not really" replied Bani "But if you want to watch something"
"Nah, noting interesting, maybe later" replied Jai. "Have a long list of shopping to do for my niece, nephew and of course my brother who has just as a long or maybe longer list then Anu." He said with a laugh.
Bani couldn't but laugh at that.
"So Bani, you'll have to help me with Anu's shopping, I hope it wont be a bother" said Jai
"No, no problem at all, it would be my pleasure as have a shopping list to from my sisters. And shopping is something we all woman love" she replied with her cheeky grin and a laugh.
They both checked out each an every shop in the China mall from electronics that attracted Jai to the retail shops that interested Bani.
From the China mall they entered the India Mall, and it was beautiful with the subtle cream colour walls, brown wood windows and the beautiful dome with tea pink colour and the oh so huge and beautiful chandelier . Under the dome were the Star buck caf and caf Havana.
The other exceptional feature of the center court is the astonishing Elephant clock, which stands eight meters high which is truly a work of art.
And from the India mall they, entered the Persia mall which was made up of blue, brown, yellow and black painted tile work so famous in Persia itself (now present day Iran).
From there, they moved in to Egypt, which had artificial Palm tress, hieroglyphics on walls and pillars, replica of old Egyptian statues, friezes, all representing 14th centaury Egypt and ancient Egypt. From the drawings on the walls to the floor and the chandelier hanging from above was all so beautiful and breathe taking.
From Egypt then entered Tunisia. The Tunisia court is made up to represent the 14th century North African market place, complete with the ceilings painted blue to represent clear blue skies and small shops inside the building itself, making it surreal. With cobbled streets, artificial palm trees, etc. This court has the biggest food court fro the entire family, not restaurants but catering to fast food, from KFC to MacDonald, Pizza Hut to Fish and Chips etc. And it also holds the hypermarket Geant (pronounced Giant).
This leads to the smallest court, Andalusia, which main attraction is the center fountain with water coming out from the lion's mouth.
And as they explored the mall, shopped and took pictures they completely forgot for that time that they were boss and employee, and were acting like old friends then someone who, were just getting to know one another. They were so comfortable joking with one another and the best thing was they both understood each other witty comments and humour even without speaking things loudly. A look or gesture would do.
Bani helped Jai shop for Anu along with her sisters though she did take his help in choosing things that Anu would love and did not already have, from clothes , shoes to accessories to perfumes and make up.
And Jai asked her opinion before buying stuff for the guys like shirts, watches, shoes, perfumes etc.
While they were shopping for every one, Jai noticed that she did not buy anything for herself yet.
"Bani aren't you going to buy anything for yourself. The only people you have shopped for till now are your sisters and my niece" asked Jai.
"No, I am buying things for myself and most things like perfume, make up, etc I can share with my sisters and I have bought things for my self too, shoes from Aldo and I still have to buy a business suit, for which I will need your help, to tell me which one would be appropriate fro the meeting" replied Bani.
"But you haven't brought any casual wear for yourself or don't you wear jeans at all???" asked Jai curious.
"No, I do wear jeans but not regularly, sometimes only" replied Bani.
"So why didn't you wear one today?" asked Jai.
"I was not sure what to wear so wore what I am more comfortable with, and I did not bring my jeans along with me" replied Bani sheepishly.
"No, worries at all, you look wonderful in what you are wearing, and can buy jeans from here like you will buy the business suit" replied Jai
Thus talking entered Debenham's a British departmental store that had many different labels under one roof and catered from clothes to accessories for Men, Women and children.
There she looked out for a good business suit for herself in black and was looking for a shirt to go with it when Jai's eyes fell on a cool white cotton collared shirt with pearl buttons and long cuffed sleeves. Jai loved it on sight and pulled it out to show Bani, who loved it too and thus took the suit and shirt to try out.
"Why don't I try them and you can decide, if looks good on me" said Bani.
"Okay, will do that so why don't you come near the try room itself" (This is because in the U.A.E men are not allowed in the woman try room area, which is separate from the men try room area) replied Jai.
Jai who was waiting couldn't believe the sight before him, she looked drop dead gorgeous in the cute black suit and the white shirt. Bani, was feeling a bit self conscious, as she never wore something like this before. Thus became more self conscious, when Jai just kept staring at her without saying a single word, putting her at unease and making her think did she looked awful or maybe she miss-buttoned the shirt, or something.
"So what do you think" asked Bani in her nervousness and continued by joking "That Bad".
Jai gave a low whistle and looked at her from head to foot and said "Beautiful".
Bani looked at him skeptically no believing him at all and asked, "You are not pulling my leg now are you? Honestly you are not joking right?"
"Honestly Bani, you look beautiful, the suit and blouse fit you perfectly, am not joking, cross my heart" replied Jai.
He couldn't get over the image of Bani in the suit looking damn hot and sexy, even though she was covered from head to foot. He was thinking to himself over this feeling of his when Bani walked out and they moved to the purchase counter.
They had taken pictures every where but not anywhere together. While they were sitting in the food court with all their purchases and resting their tired feet and decided to have a small snack and dinner at an other restaurant.
Going through the pictures they had taken with their digital camera they noticed that they had not even had one together. She couldn't but stop from commenting and laughing, that all the Indian designer shops were not under the India mall but Persia. While having a juice and potatoes chips they talked over about all the shops they visited, the purchased they made and the beauty of the mall, the dcor and its interiors.
"So talking of interiors, have you made up your mind to decorate my home yet?" asked Jai.
Bani was taken completely by surprise as she thought that he was not that serious about it and replied honestly "No, I thought you were just being polite and thus never thought about it at all"
"I was not joking at all and you still have time to think about it give me your answer. I would really love you to decorate my house, honestly" replied Jai.
"If you really are serious, I would love to take up your offer and while I do so you have to help me with it but providing me with input on what you want and are looking for , your likes , dislikes, etc. Deal?" putting out her hands to Jai.
"Deal!" said Jai by taking her hand in hers and giving it a shake. "So it final, you are taking over the interior decoration of my house, excellent."
Thus they made their way to the last court, while Bani made her way to stand in front of the fountain, and she called Jai to stand with her.
"No it's alright" replied Jai
"No its not, we don't have a single picture together, so I am not taking this one all alone. Wait let me ask someone to take our picture" and asked a man who was sitting there to take their picture.
Jai explained the man what to do and came and stood next to Bani. The stranger after taking the picture complimented them that they made a lovely couple. Before Jai or Bani could deny or explain that they were not a couple, the person walked away with his friends; leaving Jai and Bani who felt slightly awkward but laughed it off.
With all the bags they had after the purchases they made, Jai offered to carry the bags Bani carried but she declined and said, "No, its okay. You already have so many, so lets share the burden" and made their way to the China court again where the driver was waiting for them.
Jai made a call on his mobile to the driver who came at the entrance to pick them up and put all their bags in the truck of the car.
Back At The Hotel
On reaching the hotel, the bell boy bought their purchase to their room.
"I see Pushkar is not here, so Bani better freshen up, we are going out for dinner" said Jai.
"Ah…..could we order something from the restaurant here and have dinner here, while watching TV or a movie" asked Bani "Am too tired to go out again. Please, pretty please" said Bani with a smile.
"Okay, fine we will have dinner here. What would you love to have?" said Jai with a smile, walking towards the phone to call room service.
"Anything will do" replied Bani and went to her room to change.
"After ordering for them Jai too went to freshen up and change.
Jai came out changed in to his black sweat shorts reaching just below his knees and shirt.
Bani joined him in her printed pink cotton pajama suit, with a matching pink camisole inside.
Jai couldn't but notice how cute, charming and young she looked with her hair in a lose knot secured with a matching butterfly clip.
Bani couldn't but notice how handsome he looked in his outfit, showing of his muscled calf and arms to perfection.
They were so bust staring and checking out each other that they did not notice that the other was being stared at too.
"So what did you order for us, I am famished" said Bani making her self comfortable on the sofa opposite which Jai was sitting on and switching on the TV.
"Why don't you wait for a minute or so, they will be bringing our order up soon and then you can decide if you like it or not or would love to have something else instead" replied Jai with a smile.
A few minutes later the room service brought their food that Jai had ordered. He ordered Arabic food for dinner, with salads of rocket leaves, green and black olives, cucumber, tomatoes, pickled carrots, cut cucumber, homous (chickpeas paste in olive oil and lemon juice), thaini (sesames seed paste), falafel (similar to dal wadas/pokoras), for starters and mixed grill and kasba (local type of biryani with grilled /barbecued mutton leg or chicken in flavoured rice with dry fruits with a side of tomatoes sauce) along with hot Arabic bread (pita bread).
"Dinner is served maam" said Jai with a flourish. "I took the liberty to order Arabic food as it something new and that you haven't tasted. I hope you like it" and bringing the food trolley to the center table near the sofa and started putting the dishes with the food out on the table, and explaining each dish to Bani.
Bani broke a piece of bread and dipped it in homous and plopped the whole piece directly in to her mouth.
"It's delicious" she said and both sat down together on the same sofa and enjoyed their meal.
"My god, I am full. I don't think I can eat another bite" said Bani falling back on the sofa, with her hands on her tummy.
She made a pretty picture and Jai couldn't but laugh at her dramatization and said "Are you sure, there is still a falafel left on the plate" picking it up and moving it in front of her face.
Bani seeing that it was the only one left couldn't fight temptation and took his hands and put the falafel right in to her mouth.
"Now I couldn't let him (the falafel) be taken away could I" she said with a smile "Now I am full"
Jai couldn't but admire her, she was the first girl he ever met who really ate, otherwise all the women that he dated were so conscious about their figure that they hardly ate anything and just picked at their food and mostly always ordered only a salad, which they never completed.
Jai laughed and called the room service to clear away the dishes and both got busy watching 'Maine Pyar Kiya' an old Salman Khan movie.
Bani became comfortable by putting her legs up and holding the cushion and mouthing each and every dialogue and sang along each and every song.
Jai who was sitting next to her relaxed with cushions on the sides on which his left arm was resting couldn't but smile and laugh and had to asked "How many times have you watched this movie to know it word for word and song for song"
"Oh have watched it like more then 100 times I think" replied Bani, not looking at Jai at all, thus missing the shocked surprised look on his face.
"You got to be kidding right??? Isn't a 100 too much, you are definitely exaggerating" replied Jai not believing her.
"Nah…honestly have watched it nearly a 100 times or more. I watched it every time it comes on any movie channel or when there is nothing interesting to watch on TV. It's my all time favourite Sallu movie ever" replied Bani, and looked at Jai for the first time noticing the shock and disbelief on his face.
"I am not lying at all, ask any Sallu fan and they have watched at least his this movie maybe a 100 times or less for sure or maybe even more then I have" replied Bani with a laugh, seeing the disgusted look on his.
"I know you think I am crazy but then…."sighing and pointing at the screen "Its Salman" saying that with a silly grin on her face.
Jai could do nothing but laugh and he started laughing so loud that Bani couldn't ignore him anymore and annoyed asked "What's so funny?"
"You, with you sighing and drooling all over Salman...Sallu what ever you call him. He looks like a chicken" replied Jai still laughing hard.
Suddenly he was hit hard with a cushion and was left completely stunned at what just happened. He looked at Bani who was the offender with the cushion in her hand and saying "You better take it back, he does not look like a chicken at all" and hit him again with a cushion.
What then issued between them was a cushion fight and both of them completely forgot what they were fighting over and were just enjoying themselves like kids and thus while defending himself and trying his best to hit her with the cushion ended up tackling her by falling right on top of her, laughing the whole time, when suddenly they both became aware of each other, and the laughter suddenly vanished, leaving behind completely silence and them staring at one another.

The part was such a fun.The whole mall scene.And there are rerally many IMAX theatre.Nearest to my home is the one in Khobar(K.S.A.).😊
