CHAPTER 3
"Jai Walia! Where is he?!!!!", she asks the woman at the front desk, tears streaming down her upset face. "He is in room 112, down the hall and to your left", the woman replies to her. Without thanking her, she runs to her destination. She searches around the hall, looking for the number "112", which she finds a minute later. Her hand immediately grabs onto the door handle and pushes the door open. She sees him sitting up on the hospital bed with a bandaged forehead and a cast around his right arm. A doctor and nurse are by his side, talking to him about how he needs bedrest for awhile. She lets out a sob and runs inside the room, towards Jai.
Roshini: Jai! Jai! Yeh-yeh saab...KAISE?!! (sobbing) Oh Jai!
Surprised, Jai gets off the bed and stands up.
Jai: Roshini? Tumhe kaise pata chala? (trans: How did you know?)
Roshini wraps her shaky arms around Jai, crying into his chest. Jai winces in pain, his body was very sore from the accident.
Roshini: (ignoring his question) Jai, i'm so sorry! Yeh saab meri vajah se hua! (trans: All this happened because of me!) If i hadn't called and put you in a bad mood....i'm so sorry!
Jai; (still a little upset with Roshini, but didn't like to see her crying) Roshini, calm down. Main teek hoon. Kuch zyaada chote nahi laagae.(trans: I am fine. Nothing serious) It's not your fault, i wasn't paying attention to the road.
Roshini stares into Jai's face and eyes the bandage wrapped around his head. She gently touches it.
Roshini: (turning to the doctor) Doctor, kya jai saach mein teek hai? (trans: Doctor, is Jai really fine?)
Doctor: (clearing his throat) Hain...koi serious bauth nahi hai, just a fracture in his arm and a wound on his forehead, which will heal in no time. Thanks to God, Mr. Walia has survived the accident and isn't in a very serious condition. But that doesn't mean that he's absolutely fine, he will need some 2-3 days of complete rest.
Roshini: Ji, Doctor, i'll make sure of that. (looks back at Jai) Jai, your family members are so worried...
Jai: Where are they?
Roshini: They'll be here any minute now. Aditya had called me and told me about the accident so i came here as fast as i could.
Just then the room's door flies open and in comes Mausi, Jigyasa, and Aditya who have worried faces. Mausi has tears brimming in her eyes.
Mausi: Munna! Tumhe kya hua?!
Jai: (faint smile) Mausi, main teek hoon, ronliye koi zaroort nahi hai. (trans: Mausi, i am fine. You don't have to cry)
Mausi: Hai Ram. Yeh tera baah nu kya hua? And your head? (trans: Oh god. What happened to your arm?)
Jai: (holding her by her shoulders) Kuch nahi, Mausi. I'll be fine. Kabhriyo maat. (trans: Don't worry)
Mausi: Paar yeh kaise hua? (trans: But how did this happen?)
Doctor: (interrupting) Ek truck accident se...
Aditya: Truck accident?...
Jai: (remembering something) Doctor, i forgot to ask, how is the driver?
Doctor: (silent for a second) Mr. Walia, he is dead.
Jai: (shocked) Oh god..
Doctor: He was in a bad condition and couldn't make it through....
Jai: (sighing) and what about the rickshaw? Woh lokh kaise hai? (trans: How are those people?)
Doctor: The driver had also died right on the spot...., but the girl didn't. She's still unconcious this very minute.
Mausi: I hope she makes it out ok, but thankfully you are okay Munna.
Jai runs his fingers through his black hair and has a thoughtful look on his face.
Jai: (thinking) ...Dr. Mathur..can i see her?

"She's right in there, as you can see, she is still unconcious," the doctor informs Jai, as they both look through the window, looking into the room where the patient was lying on the bed, her eyes closed. A nurse is by her side, checking up on her.
Jai: Is she okay? (he asks, with concern clearly show in his voice)
Doctor: I can't say that she is okay until she is awake, but i know that she isn't seriously hurt. We just have to wait for her to wake up.
They both watch the patient through the glass window in silence.
Doctor: Is that all you wanted to know, Mr. Walia?
Jai: (nodding his head) Yes. That's all. I guess i should leave now, my family is waiting.
He looks away from the window.
Doctor: You take care of your health.
Jai; (smiles) Will do, Dr.
As Jai is about to leave, the door leading into the room, where the girl is admitted, opens. The nurse, dressed in all pink, comes out.
Nurse: Dr. Mathur, she is awake.
Doctor: what? Really? (walks into the room)
Jai watches the two enter the room, and decides to wait a bit by the door, really wanting to know if the girl was fine or not. He was doing this for himself, so he wouldn't think all night, wondering if she was ok. He stands by the doorway, watching curiously.
The doctor approaches the patient, who was sitting up in bed, wearing a confused expression on her face, yet scared at the same time.
Doctor: How are you feeling?
Girl: ....I'm fine. But why are you asking? What happened? (looking around the room) why am i here?
Doctor: Tume kuch yaad nahi aaye? (trans: You don't remember anything?)
Girl: (shakes her head)
Doctor: You were in a very serious accident.
Girl: Saach?
Doctor: Hain...but you seem to be fine. We should contact your family though. Tumhara naam kya hai? (trans: What is your name?)
Girl: ....(silent)
Doctor: Naam? Tumhare family members? Koi bhi? (trans: Name? Your family members? Anyone?)
The doctor eyes the silver chain necklace that is around her neck, with the name "Bani" on it.
Doctor: Is your name Bani?
Bani: (raises her eyebrows) ...Mujhe maalom nahi. Shayad.... (trans: ...I don't know...maybe?)
Doctor: Kya matlab?
Bani: Doctor,..mujhe kuch pata nahi,..... i don't know my name,..... i don't know my family, ......i don't even know if i have one, i dont' rememer anything.... (touching the side of her head)
Jai watches this silently, he was also becoming confused.
Doctor: ....Are you sure?
Bani nods her head gently.
Doctor: (watches her intently, thinking, then looks over to the Nurse)...Nurse, come with me. (turns back to Bani) We will be right back. You just rest for now.
Bani nods.
As the nurse and doctor make their way out of the room, Jai confronts the doctor.
Jai: Doctor, kya hua? What's wrong with her? Why doesn't she rememer anything?
Doctor: Mr. Walia...for now, i'm guessing that she has a case of Amnesia. I am going to get this confirmed so please excuse us.
Jai moves aside and lets them out. He looks over at Bani with sympathy written all over his face, who looks back at him with confusion.
