Entry No. 10 :

Forever_Always

Prologue

Jai Walia, the sexy, rich and famous. Too friendly and a flirt by nature yet knows his priority in life. He is the youngest in his family and the only son and lives with his Masi in Mumbai. Has only one sister 15 years older than him married to a great guy, Aditiya and has 3 children.

Tarun Dixit, Jai's best friend and confidante. Tarun is the more serious and the reserved kind, the older sibling of the Dixit family. Has two sisters Rano after him and the baby in the house Bani! Tarun is from Mt Abu. Tarun loves his sisters but Bani is his favorite.

Jai and Tarun met at Boarding school when both their families had sent them to the famous boarding school in Delhi where majority of the rich went to study. After which they studied at Harvard, Jai concentrating in business and Tarun in law. .

Jai always went to Mt Abu for vacations with Tarun as he loved the scenery and enjoyed being part of the family. The family loved him and he was never treated as an outsider. Bani, however was in love with Jai. Always has been but to Jai she has never been anything else other than Tarun's baby sister.

It was the boy's home coming after their graduation at the fresh age of 23. Jai is to follow his dads step into leading the Walia Industries and Tarun has decided to pursue a career in business law.

Chapter 1

Raashi pushed Bani forward to the mirror placing the dress infront of her: yeh achi lagti hai…..?

Bani: mujhe nahi phena….

Rashi: magar kiu

Bani: Raashi I don't think he likes me that way

Rashi leaning on her bed….how do u know…..u haven't seen him for 2 whole years…maybe his changed…..filing her nails and talking to Bani!

Bani put her head in her hands and sighed: oh Raashi what if his changed.

Rashi: oh common …..why do u think like that…..didnt he say that once u finish high school u will discuss it further….

Bani: yeah but maybe he said that coz I was only16 year old crazy after him…

Rashi: and now…?

Bani; and now I know that I really really love him….oh Raashi looking at her as she shoved her head into her dress, what am I going to do? what if he doesn't feel that way

Rashi: Bani why are you worried phele batein toh karke dheko

Bani: yeah u are right but

Rashi: no buts, he will be here today and you will know by tomorrow so shut up and get in bed yaar, hitting on the space beside her.

Bani fell on the bed close by her best friend's side. Closing her eyes, she had always been attracted to Jai. He was strong, muscular and gorgeous. Whenever he would come home she would get so excited and would always want to be at her best in front of him. Creasing her brows she thought how crazy and stupid she must have looked. She didn't think Jai had realized it and had played along to her tantrums until her 16th birthday party when she had openly declared her love for him and had bluntly told him how she felt. Jai had been drunk that night. Placing her hands over her lips she remembered that light kiss he had placed on her lips and had said that he liked her too.

She had been disappointed then because he had than bid her goodnight and had left. She still remembered his words the next morning:

Jai: Bani u are only 16 …hum kiu na thumare high school finish hojane par phir baath kare …..u know that u will be more sure of ur feelings towards me after that. Smiling touching her cheeks affectionately.

But for her it was more than a kiss it was special. The day was special. It wasn't only Bani's birthday but a special day. Her birthday fell on the 14th of February. It was the day for lovers. For people who were in love. And she was! She was in love with Jai Walia.

After that day he had left with bhaia to go back to college and they hadn't returned back since.

Gone was the BAni of those days…tom boyish and careless, running around in jeans and shorts…now she resembled more of a girl that she already was. Gone were those skinny bony legs and short bob cut hair. Now she was a girl in every respect. Her hair falling to up to the middle of her back, straight at top, wavy at the bottom, she had developed the right curves and was becoming into a very beautiful young woman.

Rashi had dozed off, soon bhaia ayege aur saath meh…Jai…gosh how must he be….would he have put on weight…would he remember what he said to me…would he even consider me. She had changed so much than when he saw her last. Than she was a hyper teenager turning sixteen. Now at the age of 18 she was calmer and had a better understanding of feelings and emotions. Her love for him was stronger than ever.

The horns beeped, running to her balcony she stared out to find bhaia's BMW parked infront of the garage. Shaking Raashi….rashi uth uth….woh log agaye!

Raashi: sone de yaar…turning to face her back she tried to ignore Bani

Bani: pushing her off the bed as Rashi fell down on the side wide awake looking at the clock…kya hua kya hua??

Rashi: kya yaar its 1am…mujhe sone bhi nahi deti….

Bani: they are here Raashi…they are here jumping on the bed….dressed in her pajaymas and slippers. Hair done in two braids on each side of her head…suddenly she felt all dizzy to go meet them…or rather him….

Raashi pulling on her hands she headed down…aab chalo bhi, kitne aaram se sorahi thi…bhook bhi lagi hai…

Chapter 2

Jai: man it sure feels good to be home, Jai stretched, it was a 12 hour flight and than 3 hours drive
.
Tarun: tel me about it, closing his trunk as they got their stuff out

As Nishikant Dixit helped the boys out….it was way past midnight and all of them were really hungry….: common boys? He ushered them into the house.

Kiran Dixit with her pooja thali first welcomed her son and than Jai…both taking her blessings as Tarun hugged Rano and spotted Bani

Tarun: Bani……hey! Opening his arm to his little sister…

Bani smiling shyly as she came running hugging Tarun: hi bhaia….stealing glances at Jai who didn't even notice her….busy hugging Rano and talking to the others….

Tarun: Raashi, as Tarun hugged Raashi with a smile on his lips!

Raashi: hi Tarun, not really interested …..Hugging him back

Jai looking at Bani, giving her only a glimpse and than giving her a quick hug…..hey Bani…looking good…and than: common aunty we are hungry khana kaha hai

As everyone left for the kitchen Bani stood there in the hallway starring at his back….things were different she knew it…he didn't even smile at her affectionately……

Raashi pulling her best friend: common lets go…..it's alright….Bani crying inside as she joined the rest of them.

The conversation was loud around the table….as everyone talked about happenings and Jai and Tarun going on and on about what they were planning to do now ……suddenly Bani put on the spot

Bani hello??? Bani??

Bani looking up: huh not knowing who spoke…her heart in turmoil and her mind working overtime (why didn't he talk to me….does he not like me anymore …..He did say we would talk after I finish high school …and I have 3 months ago)

Everyone was laughing Rano looking at her little sister: Areh bhai pooch raha hai ke aab tum kya karogi….???

Jai finally decided to look at her as Bani looked away to her plate playing with her fork. She had changed a lot, the babyish fat gone, she looked more like a girl with the long hair, but very much that small young girl he looked in her two braids and pajamas. Jai laughing with everyone: let me guess get married and settled down with kids, what say Bani?

It was so hurting to be judged liked that. Tarun bhaia and Rano didi were always the smart one and Bani well she just managed. Everyone knew that she wasn't the smartest of the lot. Always just managing to pass her exams and being capable to make it to the next grade. She had struggled really hard to pass her final exams from high school and had managed to graduate but still nobody expected anything from her.

Bani looked up at them sadness reflecting in her eyes yet she smiled at Jai: yes you are right, I plan to get married and have tons of children. That is exactly how I have planned my life.

Chapter 3

Getting up she started to help clear the table and began with the dishes, dismissing the servants from the kitchen, she needed to be busy, not wanting to talk to anyone. Raashi came to help, you okay buddy, Bani looked up to the only person who really understood her,

Bani: I will survive; everyone knows that I'm not the smart one.

Raashi: why didn't u tell them that u have been accepted at the top universities here in India

Bani: Do you think they care, hers moist yet not crying.

Raashi: what about Jai??

Bani: look at him Rashi as he laughed and played around with the others enjoying his tea, do u think a person like him will love me back let alone marry me, he might as well get someone like Rano didi. You know the smart kind wagera wagera!

Rashi: oh babes don't say that.

Bani: it's true! With a ache in her heart and a huge sigh she managed.

Raashi??? Someone was calling for Raashi, as she gave Bani a quick hug kissing her cheek: I love you babes u know that right….Bani smiling at her: go on… I am fine

Bani was wiping the counter tops when Jai slipped in to put his cup only to stop and lean at the door entrance to the kitchen and stare at her, she had grown to be so beautiful in the last two years and he felt like a bum making that statement. He shouldn't have done that. House chores huh, maybe she is serious about getting married.

She had always been attracted to him, he knew but what could he do, she was still Taruns baby sister and he never really wanted to go out with kids. Though she had grown up what 2 years more!

Knocking lightly he entered the kitchen, Bani looked up but instead of standing and listening she undid her apron and decided to leave the kitchen.

Jai: Bani tehro main tumse baath karna chata hu!

Bani: stopped without turning to look at him

Jai: I know that when I was here last time, things had happened and I had said that we would talk after you finish high school. And now u must understand that it was just a teenage crush u had on me. I was drunk that night and maybe I had kissed you but it meant nothing, I just got carried away as I wasn't in a clear state of mind so I just wanted to make sure that u knew that.

Bani stood there her eyes moist. A teenage crush! Shutting her eyes tight she stood there listening to him like a zombie. Yes she was 16 when she finally recognized the fact why she felt hurt when he gave other girl's attention or the fact that when he paid her compliments she would glow like a light bulb. Just the mere sight of him would light up her entire world. If he was stressed or worried she would worry for him. Yes it was love, love since when she didn't know, but it was love for her. Calling it a crush just like that hurt so much.

Jai not waiting for her to turn: you are a grown up girl now Bani, and I know that now you have realized that it was a mere crush. It happens, mere saath bhi bhouth baar hua hai. Now I have a girl friend too, nothing serious but she exists!

Bani winced at that thought, she couldn't believe it, and he loved someone else and not her. She was such a fool to even think he would come back home and take her back in his arms and tell her that he loved her very much.

Jai: Bani I am sorry if I had hurt you then but for me you a just Tarun's sister that's all….the

Before Jai could speak any further Bani turned to face him her tears falling, unashamedly she looked right at him…

Bani: a mere cursh, lips quivering…. no Jai you are wrong …meh tumse umar meh choti hu, main yeh janti hu magar pyar main umar kisne dhekha hai

Jai just stared at her he really felt disturbed to see her tear stained face and didn't know how to react to it, did she really mean …

Bani: yes looking straight into his eyes. I meant every word Jai, I love you and have always loved you Jai. Forever and Always! I don't know from when, magar maine hamesha se tumse pyar kiya hai and im not afraid to admit it.

Before Jai could digest what she had said Bani turned and ran up the stairs to her room. Closing her room door, she fell on the bed crying. How could I be so stupid? Meh itna pagal kabse hogai? Ofcoz he didn't like me, main kaha aur woh kaha??? His so intelligent and smart and good looking, Aur main breaking into uncontrollable sobs.

Jai headed to his room for the night and still couldn't get rid of that hurtful gaze from Bani. Those deep jet black pupils dilated with pain and agony. That look had registered in his head and even though he tried to shrug it off it wouldn't let go. Dismissing his thoughts, he headed to bed. Thore din meh she will be fine, taking the stairs two at a time, he needed to sleep right now. Though sleep was far from coming he had to.

Chapter 4

Kashmir toh jaise koi janat thi. Her University was situated high on the mountains and she had taken a liking to this place instantly. She had the choice of moving to many universities in and out of India but this here is what she needed. The cold chills, the snowy mountains and the beautiful running streams. She was in love with the place. It was the perfect solace of the pain in her heart.

Raashi had gone to study in Mumbai as she was allergic to the molds in the air here and she couldn't come out with Bani. They had cried endlessly hugging each other and had promised to write everyday. She missed her best friend but for her this had been a fresh start. She was doing a business degree in Marketing and Kashmir being one of the major tourist sights was the perfect place to pursue it.

It had been 2 years since she had seen her family and she did miss them at times but she also knew that Tarun bhaia had remained in Mt Abu meaning that Jai would be around always as well. Taking extra courses in summer or winter breaks and always finding a reason to not go home. Sitting on the edge of the stream on Friday evening she looked at the beautiful water flowing from the depths of the mountains and thought of the last argument with her dad.

It had been the next morning after that horrible scene with Jai. She had woken up early and confronted her dad before he had left the house

Bani: par papa kiu nahi…main kiu nahi ja sakti? Not believing her dad

Nishi: beta Mumbai, Mt Abu even Delhi meh itna acha colleges hai toh tum itne door kiu jana chati ho?? Nishi was frustrated with the thought of his baby out alone and in a place where she would have nobody. He didn't even know Bani had thought of even going for further education. School never really did interest her.

Bani: papa but agar bhaia ja sakte hai toh main kiu nahi, Rano didi bhi toh apne maan ke par rahi hai

Nishi: lekin beta?

Rano: janedo na papa, she had entered the room at the right moment. Waha itni dhand hoti hai ke yeh khud ghar ane ki zid karegi! Smiling at Bani and hugging her. Bani I didn't know you were interested in going further with your studies

Bani: pushing her sister's hug back and on the verge of hysteria, what is wrong with everyone? Why cant I go for further studies didi, bhaia ja sakte hai, aap ja skate ho, toh main kiu nahi?? She was openly crying now shouting at them both. It hurt too much, first, the man she thought had loved her and now her own family didn't have any faith in her. She had made a promise to herself that day that she would prove everyone wrong.

Looking at the leaves falling, autumn was around the corner and soon after finals another 3 months of vacation before her final year begins and she becomes a graduate. She couldn't wait for that day. Not having anything else to concentrate on she studied day and night and was sure to graduate with honors. She was happy with her accomplishments. The hurt and bitterness had not left her but she had managed to live with it or rather to deal with it. Long gone were those days when she would cry herself to sleep or look at a picture of him and breakdown. Now she was strong and even if he would come nothing could break her!

Jai on the other hand, had made it to the hit list of success as the months went by. The past 2 years he was renowned the most eligible bachelor in India appearing in magazines, tabloids and the television world. Bani had made sure to keep an abreast of information of the happenings in his life. Currently dating some industrialist's daughter he had been at the premiere of the film fare awards function. Looking at the cover "will she succeed in getting the ravishing Walia?' Was the famous headline in this month's issue of Business Magazine.

Putting the magazine aside Bani folding her legs, hugging it to herself, and looking out at the scenery the cold air touching her face like a balm on her rioted thoughts. She had tried to shut him off her mind, her soul, her heart but no matter what as the days grew she knew she couldn't satisfy her curiosity in any other form. She knew if she met him today she would ignore him like anything but for now who was to know. She knew nobody was ever going to fill that spot in her heart ever. She smiled to herself thinking of her mum's favorite song

'ajeeb daastaan hai yeh, kaha shuru kaha khatam
…….yeh manzile hai kaunsi na woh samaj sake na hum'

Only in this case it was her that didn't know its destiny. Her heart that yearned for what she couldn't have. It was true, whoever wrote those lyrics must have at some point felt what she did.

Chapter 5

"Ring Ring Ring" the phone rang insistently oh God! what is that noise. Turning the bedside lamp on she looked at the clock 5am. She had slept only 3 hours ago, Itne subha kaun hai?. Getting up to answer the call!

Bani: yawning: hello! Trying hard to keep her eyes open, grabbing her robe, It was really cold

Rano: BANI??????????

Bani: didi app …itne subha?? Squeezing her eyes

Rano: Bani im getting married! Her sister shouted on the other side of the phone line.

Bani: kya??

Rano: ha stupid im getting married. She was sounding very excited and Bani smiled, she was really very happy for her sister.

Bani: wow Di that's great, kaab?

Rano: agle mahine? 15th ko? And you have to be here. Before Bani cold argue with her sister Rano stopped her and didn't give Bani a chance to talk. I don't care what happens in this world Bani agar tum nahi ai toh meh yeh shadi nahi karugi. Agar mujhe pheli haldi lagegi toh mere bhen ke haath. Mujhe aur kuch nahi sun na.

3 weeks later Bani was standing at the baggage claim gathering her luggage. She had become really light skinned and her skin very sensitive. A little twitch or irritation in her skin, it would go red. The scorching heat of Mumbai was getting to her. Clad in a body fitting, sleeveless white kameez she looked the perfect image of an actress from a yash raj movie. She could sense a few male heads were turning her way with appreciation but like she cared. The man who she wanted most to do that didn't even give a damn. Swinging her hair back she looked ahead walking up to find who had come to receive her.

No Bani you are going to enjoy this trip! Mentally & emotionally she prepared herself to be strong. She was sure to meet him sooner or later; she had to tell herself that she has to move on in life. And that was exactly what she was going to do! Please Bhagwan meri madath karna!

Jai and Tarun were busy discussing some business deal when Jai turned his head to see what that reflection was hitting his face only to find the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. [He was back in Mt Abu from Mumbai with his entire family. Rano was getting married to his nephew, Sahil and the marriage was to take place here.]

Clad in an off white kameez she looked eternal. You know the feeling when suddenly the wind starts blowing towards you and you start to hear music. The whole world shuts down on you and the only thing visible is that one beauty. That was what was happening to Jai. Never in his 26 years had he felt that way. Wavy loose hair cascading down her back covering some facial expression, tiny shimmering earrings making reflections on his face and thin bangles making the most exotic sound he had ever heard.

Then:

Raashi: Bani??? Bani?? Is that you??? Oh God Bani running up to her best friend. No matter they were states apart they still kept in touch and knew everything about each other.

Bani saw her friend running up and leaving her luggage on the cart also ran forward. Her hair pulled back the wind made from her running Jai for the first time realized it was Bani.

Jai looked shocked at her Bani?? A soft gasp left from his mouth. Was this the same Bani he knew?

As everyone came forward to receive her Jai stood still in his place not believing his fate.

Raashi ended up crying hugging her as Bani hugged her back. Slowly approaching the rest of her family, with her mum hugging her and than her dad all of them crying. Rano approaching them all

Rano; maine kaha tha meri bhen meri shadi meh zaroor ayegi

Bani: didi! Hugging her sister but not once did she cry?

As Tarun and Jai approached them

Tarun: hey Bani…..

Bani lifted her gaze to be met by pair of eyes that had haunted her dreams to date. Walking towards him as Jai stood still mesmerized by her beauty her mere presence. Bani not once moving her gaze walked ahead

Jai about to open his arms for a hug when Bani passed him straight without even looking back

Bani: Bhaia as Tarun lifted his baby sister up into the air.

Tarun: you are looking stunning baby sis. Dad look at her koi mistake na karde koi model ke liye.

Bani; hugging her brother, bhaia, stop it, she smiled back at him with a smile. Her brother was always the one who treated her like a princess no matter what!

Not once did Bani acknowledge Jai. It wasn't easy; she could never forget the hurt as well as making a complete fool of herself that day.

Tarun: have u met Jai? Looking at Jai to let him hug her

Bani without looking: areh mera saman, running back to get her trolley cutting her brother off

Jai had never felt more stupid in his entire life. He didn't know what the feeling was but he didn't like the way he felt.

Chapter 6

Whole week Jai was trying hard to either collide with her in the hallway or to be in the kitchen early in hope that he might catch her alone or to go upstairs to use the bathroom in hope that she might be around her room or come in the hallway upstairs. But no such luck. He didn't know what was getting over him but for some reason he wanted to talk to her, to have her smile at him like she was smiling at everyone else. She had even greeted his Masi with love and warmth and her sister and Aditya but not him. He wasn't able to comprehend what was going on in-between him and in his mind but something was definitely wrong and until he got it out of her he wouldn't be settled.

The mehendi ceremony had begun and up till now Bani was careful not to let anyone aware of the hostility she was giving to Jai. It was just so hard to be in such close proximity yet not be able to talk to him. But this was very important to her. If she didn't make herself strong enough her love for him that she had shoved in the deepest areas of her heart would come flowing out and then she would be a hopeless case. She didn't want to embarrass herself again. Though it was nice being home she had to admit, she had missed everyone terribly.

Clad in a purple and green ghara Bani looked really beautiful. By mere fate Jai had worn the same purple sherwani with green sash to match it. Her hair parted in the middle and held half way at the back leaving the rest open falling like waves all around her. For the first time Jai had seen her really dress up with makeup and jewellery and felt his stomach do a somersault. She was so beautiful.

As Bani descended the stairs running with a thali in her hand Rashi called her. Bani looked back still running when her lengha caught in one of the toe fingers and she almost fell on the last step when she felt strong lean hands grip her. Turning her head towards who the person was? a smile full on her lips. She froze. Jai stared right into her eyes, they were so deep and black, and one could get lost in them. Bani was still at that moment, she didn't know what to do. Looking straight in his eyes she felt caught in them not even able to blink.

Somewhere in the celebrations the song came up

'dil ne kar liya aetbaar humko hogeya tumse pyar
…jaab se mileho mujhe oh janejan tabse hai jana kya hai dil ka lagana
Yeh nighaye teri kargayi mujhe deewana'

Jai didn't know what had overcome him. He was always so composed and in control but ever since Bani came back he wasn't the same person anymore. Looking at her face his gaze stopping at her lips, she quickly licked them in haste and the only thing in Jai's head was to kiss her. Kiss those luscious lips so passionately that she wouldn't have a choice but to talk to him.

Raashi: aahem Bani you alright??? Running down the stairs, she worried for her best friend; she knew how hard this whole thing was for her.

Jai didn't let go but Bani was in reality check now. Passing the thali to Raashi: ha theek ho tu chaal meh ati hu …straightening to look at Jai

Bani: u can let go of me now, sternly yet seriously she managed

Jai: never!

Bani: sorry?? If she didn't hear wrong did he say never.

Jai straightened up: are you okay?

Bani: straightening her dupatta in front: I'm fine trying to move away

Jai held onto her hand looking at her…Bani winced closing her eyes in the mind she was screaming please stop it.

Jai: kaisi ho Bani?

Bani: theek hu trying to get her hand out from his tight grip

Jai: pulling her so that she faced him, watching the tension on her face: kya hua bani why won't you talk to me?

Bani: I didn't think u wanted to talk to a immature, unsuccessful girl. She couldn't help it; there was too much bitterness in her to not say it. It just came out even when she didn't want it to.

You could see the strained line of Jai cheeks as he was trying hard to keep his cool: how are you Bani?

Bani: maine kaha nah Jai meh theek hu, would you please leave me saabhi log dhek rahe hai aur didi mera intezar kar rahi hai.

Jai: you are not immature Bani!

Bani, letting go of her hand angry tears in her eyes. In the space of 2 and half years this was the first time that something got to her and it was the same thing yet again. Stop it just stop it! she hissed. Tum mujse door hi raho samjhe tum. Go to your Miss Model or whoever is your love interest this season but leave me in peace. You have haunted my life far too long now I just want to be in peace.

With that Bani left not looking back, wiping her eyes in a haste smudging her mascara. Raashi looked at her and knew what it was indicating her to go fix her makeup nahi toh everyone will know.

Jai stood there watching her. Did she still have those feelings for him? Did she still have a spot for him in her heart or did she hate him so much? Why did he feel guilty? Why did he want to haul her in his arms and kiss the living day lights out of her? Why?? This was no ordinary girl, this was Bani but what was so special about Bani?

Tarun: areh Jai camcoder kaha hai??

Jai; shit room meh bhool geya abhi laya! Running up the stairs to Taruns room to get the video camera. He didn't see when he turned the corner that Bani was coming the same exact way colliding straight into her both falling on the side sofa in Taruns room. Bani stuck under Jai.

Bani; tum? Get of me! She had just managed to get her makeup redone only to collide in him again. Get of me Jai

Jai: looked at her, why was she so mad at him? I'm sorry Bani par is baar fault thumara hai

Bani: oh shut up and get up, don't use your cheap tactics with me. Main jitna tumse door rhena chati hu tum utni hi mere nazdik ateh ho,..leave me alone. Bani kept talking but Jai wasn't listening to anything she was saying, his eyes in fact were on her lips, they way they were moving and the way they were so close to him that he just had to feel them.

Bani: JAI? She shouted really tired now

Jai: I know I'm not supposed to do this but I am sorry I can't help it. Before she could say or do anything he leaned forward and kissed her. A slow sensual touch and moving back he saw the shocked reaction on her face. Not giving her any time to react or think he bent forward this time holding her face in his palms and kissed her in the most passionate way ever. Bani didn't know what happened but she tried to push him and tried and tried when some inner fire erupted and all was lost in this kiss.

It was after some moment when Jai felt wetness on his palms only to move back to see her eyes closed and tears streaming down her cheeks. As he moved back to stand up, Bani opened her eyes, red! She stared at him, getting up and than breathing hard she gave him a tight slap and ran out of the room. Jai stood there speechless: oh God what have I done? He didn't even notice the slap plastered on his left cheek! Ruffling the side of his hair as Tarun entered the room

Tarun: what yaar chalo neeche sabhi intezar kar rahe hai?? Grabbing the camcorder and following Jai downstairs

Jai looked back to see if Bani was anywhere in sight but to no avail. He went with Tarun but nothing was the same for him anymore.

Chapter 7

Jai sat down on his suitcase. The wedding was done with and everyone was ready to leave with the new bride to Mumbai. But Jai's eyes were only looking for Bani! After that scene she rarely came into view. Only when she was required as the bride's sister or when family pictures were taken. She did not once look at him. He tried on numerous times to get her attention but Bani was a tough shell to break. He was feeling very guilty inside and didn't understand the turn of events in his life but he needed to talk to her. He didn't exactly know what he would say because he didn't regret what he did but he had to talk to her.

As everyone sat in the car Rano turned to ask her mom: Ma Bani kaha hai??

Bani rushing downstairs to greet her sister: sorry di aapke liye madir gayi thi, handing her the Prasad and hugging her sister.

Rano: in an emotional state: tum airport nahi aogi??

Bani: agar meh ai toh bhoth rougi aur phir aap kaise jaoge hugging her sister crying openly now yet laughingly trying to make her sister happy.

Rano: mere liye bhi nahi crying and looking at her baby sister

Bani looked at her and knew that she couldn't say no to her sister, not today, it would hurt her; theek hai didi aapke liye, meh gadi nikalti hu

Tarun: nahi Bani koi baath nahi Jai akele araha hai tum uske saath ajao!

Jai getting up all excited: oh yeah I am traveling alone as I have to stay a few days more for some business deals and my car is empty. So yeah why not! Not wanting to show his excitement.

Bani looked at him ignoring his statement: lekin bhaia meh

Nishi: ha beta doosri gadi ki zarurat nahi hai tum Jai ke saath ajao, chalo der horahi hai.

Jai got in his car but Bani didn't stir. She stood rooted to her spot while the others got in the car and were waiting for Jai. Running the engine he waited for her. Than driving beside her he opened the door for her to get in. Looking ahead to see the other 3 cars waiting for her she got in. Slamming the door shut, hugging her handbag to herself she looked ahead waiting.

Jai smiling pulling his sunny's over his eyes drove ahead. It was a 3 hour drive and for some reason he was happy. Bani looked out not wanting to look at him. The close proximity of the car was disturbing her too much and making her really uncomfortable. The kiss still didn't wear off her. Every night she slept she only dreamt of those lips on hers. Those lean strong arms enclosing her and holding her to him. She needed that to stop. Closing her eyes shut to erase the memory off she turned to look out the window and tried to concentrate on the scenery. It was raining heavily.

Jai: I didn't know rain was so beautiful! trying to start a conversation with her

Bani looked at him and didn't say anything instead she just looked out again.

Jai: so what do u do in uni??

Bani: what does one do in uni she retorted sharply not interested at all

Jai was taken back but nothing was going to stop him now: okay…how about what is your major or are you majors?

Bani: looked at him straight and stared at his hard frame, he was dashingly handsome. And God knows how many girls have become victims to his charm but now her. Not anymore.

Jai waited a few seconds before he started again: u know u have become more light skinned than you were, is it really that cold in Kashmir?

Bani: you were there last year should you know that. She bit her tongue before realizing what she said and turned away from him. She didn't want him to think she kept a track of happenings in his life. Oh she hated him. She hated the way he provoked her. The way he made her react!

Jai; agar itna kuch mere bare main janti ho toh phir mujhse itna naraazgi kiu

Bani: looking at him, please who told you I was mad at you. Naaraaz unpar hoteh hai joh dil ke kareeb hoteh hai aur tum mere dil meh hi nahi

Jai: maine dil ki baath nahi ki thi Bani? Giving her a quick glance, but that's what you are saying than be it.

Bani: id rather you not talk about heart and feelings Jai coz frankly you have none. You think of the female sex as some piece of clothing, use that which is in fashion. But you know what the funny part is, is baar meh nahi janti thumara fashion statement kya hai, dost ki bhen or shadi material. Cos that's a guy thing right? Jisko bhi chaho jitna din aaram se istemal karo aur jaab shadi karne ki pari aye toh ek achi si seedi sadi si ladki ko dhoondo. Look for a nice girl to settle? Well Im sorry im not some cheap rag you make me out for. I may have fallen for you once but not agan, never again!

Jai's car's brakes screeched and he stopped on the edge of the road, Bani her hands to her heart: oh my God what are you doing Jai??

Taking his cell phone dialing Tarun: yeah hey Ta, Bani needs to go to the washroom, you guys go ahead I will soon join you on the road.

Tarun: k buddy!

Bani: what the ..i ??

Jai turning her way and looking at her straight, Bani starred back really scared, it was raining heavily outside and he was starring at her seemed like to eat her alive. OH God why couldn't she just shut up through the whole trip.

Jai: yes you are right Bani all of a sudden you have become fancy to me and I want you,I want you so bad. And because of that I don't mind at all to do this.

Jai leaned forward flinging her salwar's dupatta to the side, clutching her handbag and shoving it on the back seat. With one swing of his leg he was over her on the passenger seat, pushing the seat right back and looking at her.

Bani was so scared: Jai what are you doing? Stop it.

Jai: why Bani? Scared? Dangerously looking at her! Leaning forward and kissing her. Bani tried so hard to push him when her hands betrayed her and her heart and mind started to react on its own. Going around his neck she was responding back. Jai was trying to punish her with hard kisses but passion seemed to creep from nowhere and he was kissing and touching her all over. His hands over the flat of her tummy to the shoulder area removing her kameezes top area of one shoulder and stinging it with kisses. Bani's body betraying her as they enjoyed his feel and touch! Again Jai's lips took hers oh so passionate that time would stop and it was only him and her and nothing else. After what seemed like eternity, lifting himself he looked at her state and quivering lips. Bani suddenly noticed him still and opened her eyes reality hitting her and disbelief reflecting in her eyes. What did she do why did she react like that? Jai smiling at her satisfied at the reaction he got from her: don't ever say something that the consequences is to your disadvantage Bani! Right now right here I could have you and it wont even be my fault but something you would be crying for so don't make me into an animal you think I am because I am not!

With those words Jai shifted back and sat on his seat waiting for her to straighten up and put the seat belt on. He too was trying very hard to control himself. This wasn't the time or the place but he knew what he had to do. Bani sitting properly with shaking hands straightened her hair and kameez, leaning back to retrieve her dupatta only to touch Jai on the shoulder with her upper body, Jai turning to look at her as she looked back and than straightening covering herself up. Jai could see he had marked her shoulder and a sudden urge to mark her to him for the rest of his life occurred to him. Pointing to the spot, as Bani looked turning to only stare at him her face all flushed and hot, covering it with her dupatta. Oh Why did she love him so much and why did love hurt so much?

Jai was silence through out the rest of the trip and Bani was confused. She didn't have the energy to fight him nor say anything she would later regret, knowing very well what all it could lead to. She was never going to forget this man not now, not ever. He had marked her forever and always and was never going to leave her, never! He had captured her mind, her heart and her soul. But one thing was certain, she was going to have to run miles away from him to stop her heart beating so frantically when he was around. To stop reacting to what she didn't know she was capable of.

Jai in his silence thought over all the happenings of the past month or so. Bani had had a huge impact on him, no one ever did. He didn't know what these raw feelings were and what was happening but when she was around everything seemed to be normal and when she was not in the picture he would spend endless hours looking for her, thinking of her and wanting to see her. Looking at her, she had fallen asleep, her head leaning on the window looking towards him. She was so innocent and he had somewhat robbed that innocent the day he unintentionally had hurt her feelings. How was he to know she was serious? She was only 16 then. It did bother him for days those beautiful eyes hurt and in tears but he had to let go of it. She was his best friend's baby sister, and friend's sisters were out of bounds for fun. He wasn't serious than and didn't want to commit. He knew if he played with her feelings than she would have ended up hurt but now, now things were different. Now he knew what he had to do.

Chapter 8

Exams were finally over. She heaved a huge sigh as she relaxed after the graduation rehearsals. Phew so much hard work. Closing her eyes, she leaned back on her favorite bench by the water and closed her eyes. Once again, those same haunting eyes, that strong lean arms, that sexy body that kisses! Opening her eyes she sat up straight. Oh God Stop! After that day at the airport Bani had not seen Jai. He had left on some hill project to the interior of Mt Abu and she had returned back to school. It was for the good she had to admit.

"You know sitting out here in this cold weather is not good for your health". Chahye woh khoobsurat Kashmir kiu na ho. Jai looked at the most gorgeous face he had ever seen, God she was so beautiful. He wanted to pull her up and kiss her.

Bani blinking once, twice, thrice oh God she wasn't dreaming: tum?

Jai: taking his hat off and bending towards her in a gentleman way: yes me

Bani; tum yaha kya kar rahe ho?

Jai: meh yaha wohi karne aya hu joh aur saab karne aye hai!

Bani: kya?? Getting up, Jai tum yaha kya kar rahe ho?

Jai: smiling at her, she looked delicious. Well main yaha kam ke silsile meh aya tha toh patah chala that tomorrow is your graduation so I came.

Bani ;tumhe but before she could finish she saw Raashi with her parents and Rano coming towards her too. Jai gazed at her as her expression lit up.

Bani: hugging everyone, mama, papa, rashi…tum saab, bhaia.

Jai: and my hug, before Bani could say anything Jai pulled her turning his back to the family members who were busy looking at the scenery: hi holding her tight God I missed you!

Bani wanted to slap him: let go of me trying hard to wiggle her way out of his embrace

Jai: getting back only to whisper in her ears: don't fight me Bani, u know u want me

That scared Bani, what was wrong with him, she had never heard him talk like that. She pulled to quick and almost slipped on the icy slope. But her hero was too smart, steadying her move: samal ke Bani! Smiling at her knowing very well the impact he had.

Bani had graduated with honors receiving the best merit student of the year. She was thrilled as her hard work had eventually paid off. Now she could prove to the whole world she wasn't just a pretty little thing. She was smart, intelligent and a graduate. Most importantly she could prove to Jai that she didn't just marry to have tons of kids but to have graduated on the top of her class!

The class of 2002 was gathered around for pictures and than later to meet in the famous dome next to their university for the after party. Every member of the family was invited. Bani radiantly smiling as she took pictures with her classmates and than her family. Later singles with everyone including Jai. Jai had deliberately made her sit on his lap and the photographer was shooting snap by snap. In fact she was so uncomfortable at she bet everything was going to be evident in the pictures. She couldn't control her temper and wanted to kill him. Some nerve of the guy.

Later that evening, dressed elegantly in a halter neck dress coming mid length to the bottom from her knee, all black and back bare up till her waist, she looked stunning. She had worn a kameez for her graduation so she thought might as well dress up she had needed the boost in confidence after her encounter with Mr Sleez Bag. Hair in a loose knot on the nape of her neck, eyes done deeply in kajal with long dangling earrings falling from her ears matched with the same bracelet and ring on right hand.

She was talking to some of her fellow students when there was a hush amongst the crowd and Bani looked up to see what the commotion was all about. Jai clad in a black tuxedo stood there looking right at her. Nearly all female eyes were on him and she felt a tinge of jealousy grab her heart. How dare they look? Taking the nearest Champaign glass she gulped the whole content down her throat. Darn him I am going to have a good time and not care about him today.

Jai walked lazily towards her taking in her figure clad in that sexy outfit one calls a dress. Damn that temptress, he wasn't going to be sorry for his actions tonight, she is asking for it. Taking her look he suddenly got hungry for her. Nothing other than her would satisfy his appetite. Walking up-close as Bani gulped her second glass he looked right into her eyes, grabbed her back, running his finger up her bare back. Bani turned her face to the side as Jai kissed the neck area whispering in her ears, you look ravishing, smelling the hint of fire and ice, hmmm his never had a woman use that before, kissing it softly. She was all fire and ice tonight!

Bani pushed him back slightly only to be pulled closer by Jai leading her to the dance floor. The song:

Sholon si sholon si
tere ankhon ki yeh roshni
kiske liye hai kiske liye hai
chandni chandni, tere chere ki yeh chandni
kiske liye hai kiske liye hai
tera muskurana nazar yun jhukana
tera muskurana nazar yun jhukana
mere liye hai bas mere liye hai

Jai grabbed her back close to him as he led her on with the music a more seductive dance holding her close. The lights, the music all was perfect! Bani didn't know what took over her, growing up she had been to family gatherings and parties and had always envisioned Jai holding her like he did to the other girls and dancing and now that she was in his arms she couldn't believe it. Feeling a bit light headed not drunk though she felt relaxed being led onto the dancing moves as she let her body move to the beats and towards what Jai was leading on.

Jai close to her ears, dheko Bani even your body betrays you, it wants me. His soft whispers were driving her insane and burning the skin area where it touched. Both her hands on his shoulders: let me go Jai!

Jai: I did once but ab nahi Bani, a statement that came from his heart!

Bani: no Jai you have lost that chance, I am not that girl anymore.

Jai looked at her face and inhaled deep, yes you aren't Bani, why was she trying so hard, if this is what she wants than why she is denying herself. Leaving him, as she escaped his hold and went off the dance floor only to turn and find some other girl grabbing his hand. The same old Jai, agar yeh nahi toh koi aur sahi! Jai shrugging off his shoulder as he took some other girl and started dancing to some other number! Shayad this will make her realize he thought to himself.

Bani couldn't contain the jealousy within her. What's wrong with her she had always seen this before and was able to ignore the jealous person inside her but what is happening now! Looking at him as a group of her friends approached her, Bani common one shot for graduation's sake common yaar! Usually Bani ignored them or just laughed but today

Bani: why not! Taking the shot glass from the tray she glanced at Jai, the girls hands had caressed a cheek seemed like and Jai was starring at her, cringing her eyes she turned her gaze and with one go gulped the whole drink down. Putting the glass down she leaned forward on the nearby table and inhaled deep, it was burning the inside of her throat.

Jai leaving the girl beside, oh shit – he knew Bani too well and she never ever drank, running to her aid. Counting to himself 2 glasses of Champaign, a glass of red wine and now this, oh no she was going to loose it soon.

Handing her a lemon, this usually helps, as Bani took it and bit on it looking to find him: thanks and than "oh go away"

Jai: holding her shoulders, are you alright??

Bani: im fine, leave me alone and go to that witch laughing stupidly

Jai: jealous are we Bani???

Bani: shrugging his hands off her she was going towards the dance floor, I am going to dance leave me alone, and please why would I be jealous?

Jai looked at the wobbly walk and her behind and knew two more minutes till the full effect of the drink would start to show.

Tarun and Raashi had come and were walking towards Jai: hey Jai what's happening Bani kaha hai, I have her graduation gift to give her.

Jai: indicating to him to look

Rashi: looking on, at her, oh God what happened?

Jai: tequila shot, friends, showing with his head and than folding and standing looking at Bani dance to some number with her buddies. Some guys were trying to hold her and Jai wincing wanted to beat the living day lights out of them.

Rashi: don't just stand there do something looking worried. Tarun was going when Jai stopped him, let me I have to go anyway I will take her to her room and make sure she is tucked in.

Tarun: alrite dude giving him a quizzical look. Take care of my baby, alright man, holding Rashi, common me and you, our turn to dance.

Chapter 9

Jai grabbed Bani picking her up on his shoulder: okay lady your time is up, time to say goodbye!

Bani: but I want to dance, leave me. LET ME GO! LET ME GO JAI! Hitting with her fist on his back as Jai lightly hit on her bottom. Finally entering his room, Jai dumped her on the soft mattress of his bed. Her eyes red and hair almost open she looked ready to eat alive. Temptress, he thought as he grabbed some water and handed it to Bani.

Bani getting up fully drunk now, only to collapse again before rising again: what the hell is your problem, why have you brought me here?

Jai: Bani pani pilo handing her the glass

Bani taking the glass and throwing it towards him, Jai ducked and it hit the back of the door. The hotel next to the dome where the function was held was aloud with music and thank God to that if not he would have had security in his room chasing him out. Jai looked at the smashing glass on the door and than at Bani. Are you crazy woman? Dammit!

Walking towards her he was raging with anger, Bani what the hell was that for? Grabbing her side of both the hands he pulled her to him, do you know what u just did? I could have got hurt.

Bani all drunk laughing out loud now, tumhe aur dard, common give me a break. Laughing again, Jai looking at her with a worried expression on his face!

Jai: not letting her go as he grabbed one of her wrists, hold on Bani, why do u say that about me?

Before he could even finish talking Bani looked at him, Jai could see the tears all ready to fall but she was trying hard to control them.

Bani: why??? You want to know why? Looking at him, because it hurts me, every living day I cannot live my life not thinking about you. Main jagti hu toh tum hoteh ho, meh soti hu toh tum hoteh ho. Taking her hands and this time Jai letting her go, she held her head, burying her face in them, kabhi kabhi soch ti hu ke main, main sir kaat ke phek du. I just cannot stop, crying now as she knelt down on her knees, all the years' frustration finally coming out. Why wont you leave me alone Jai, why? I left home to come as far away as I could so that I don't have to remember you, so that memories don't haunt me, but I still couldn't, and now, now you won't leave me alone.

Jai bent down on his knees too, bending to be on her level. Holding her teary hands from her face, kiu Bani? Why couldn't you stop?

Bani looked at him, tired and drunk and having no energy she looked straight at him: because

Jai: because kya Bani? Looking at her intently, wanting to know what she was going to say, to make sure of her feelings before he took the next step.

Bani: because I love you Jai, I always have, maine hamesha se tumse pyar kiya hai. Main, crying she hugged Jai and he pulled her letting her cry. Inbetween sobs she also said, magar, magar tumne hamesha mere pyar ko mazak samajha, an infatuation, an immature teenagers crush. But I still can't help it I love you and always will!

Jai pulled her away from his embrace and looked at her tear strained face, wiping her tears and pushing her hair back from her face. Bani looked up at him with big eyes as she was trying very hard to keep them open. Looking at him when Jai bent forward and kissed her! Pulling her close to him holding her tight he kissed her eyes, her eyebrows, her cheeks and finally her mouth. Taking in each and every detail, slowly softly as Bani closed her eyes into a dream that she never knew could exist.

Jai picked her up and led her to the bed, Bani's eyes were closed but she let him, as Jai placed her down on the bed and tried moving away, she pulled him close murmuring; mujhe maath chor kar jao? As he got in bed beside her kissing her again and again and again.

Chapter 10

Bani woke up with a really bad headache: trying to get up holding her head. ohhhhhhhhh!! Groaning she sat up. Opening her eyes, they seemed too heavy to open and her head was killing her. Straightening her hair she looked around wondering why her dorm room looked so big and different. Turning her head she looked at the sliding door to find Jai holding two mugs of steaming liquid looking at her.

Jai: Good Morning! Looking really handsome in sweat pants and vest

Bani: opening her eyes to make sure she wasn't dreaming squeezing her eyes

Jai: smiling as he looked at her astonished expression taking in her hair, so innocent and beautiful she was: its really me Bani, koi sapna nahi hu

Bani: pulling her shirt, what shirt looking at it, what am I doing with a shirt on. Main, gulping in air and looking around, main yaha, looking at him "kaise"

Jai lazily walked towards her, handing her the coffee; take this Bani it should help with the hangover. As for tum yaah kaise well you don't want to know every little detail do you? Smiling at her, touching her cheeks softly

Bani her eyes as wide as they could get starred at his face, noticing his expressions noticing how serious he was, no hint of amusement. Feeling awkward she didn't know what to ask and what to say. Looking at the coffee, black! Handing the cup back to him, black hai mujhe sugar aur cream pasand hai.

Jai couldn't believe her, taking the cup and turning to smile as he got back to the area that had the coffee stuff placed. Bani taking this opportunity to go to the bathroom, grabbing the brush (complement of the hotel thank God) taking the plastic off the brush and starting to clean her mouth she tried to think hard as to what happened and all she remembered was the last dance they did. Kya hua tha brushing vigorously, getting in the shower questioning herself over and over again! Pulling her hair up in the towel she grabbed the robe and put it on.

As she entered the room Raashi came to her hugging her: oh everyone is so happy Bani, tumne kuch kaha kiu nahi, Bani looked at her best friend dumb founded. Maine kuch kya!

Rashi handing her a duffle bag with clothes for her and she hugged her, oh im so happy you and Jai and shadi, everyone is so thrilled. How did u do it, I mean kya kaha tumne kya kaha Jai ne?

Rashi shook Bani and kept asking her while Bani blinked her eyes trying to understand. Shadi? Jai? Finding Jai in the room smiling at her: your coffee sweety just the way u like it! Kissing her cheeks and handing it to her.

Bani's fingers touching her cheek, oh my God did he just kiss me infront of Raashi, blushing like anything she went totally red.

Rashi: oh im so happy, uncle aunty bhi itne khush hai, even Tarun bhaia! Hugging her back, okay I gotta go, you have a lot to tell me later babez.

Bani: her hand forward, Raashi?

Jai: its okay honey hugging her from the side, let her go, tum dress hojao and than we will go down

Bani pushing him away and looking at him: Jai kaal raath, I mean that me and you, I want to…God this was so hard she screamed inside, embarrassed and totally red. What the hell was Rashi talking about?

Jai: I have asked your hand in marriage from your parents and brother and they have given me the consent, we are getting engaged on your birthday.

Bani: kya? No way! I am not marrying you! Sternly she said, her head pounding louder by the minute wanting to explode.

Jai: fine sipping his coffee, go out there and tell them that you are not marrying me and embarrass yourself on where you were last night and the fact that you don't even remember what a wonderful night we spent together. Seating himself down on the bed and resting his head at the back he took her dress from the side and threw it to her: your dress!

Bani: not believing it but not being able to ask him either. Gosh this was so embarrassing and she was really worried to think why he would want to marry her. Taking her stuff in the bathroom she hurriedly changed into a pair of jeans and top and pulled her wet hair back with a claw clip.

Getting into the breakfast area, the whole family was gathered around and started hugging and giving their best wishes to Jai and Bani.

Tarun: you better take care of her buddy, if not showing him a fist; I will meet u in court.

Jai: smiling putting his hands up as if scared, cross my heart buddy! Jai was really happy that Tarun had approved, he knew it was a big step for him knowing Jai's history yet he had also acknowledged the genuine feeling he had for Bani. Hugging his best friend of many years he silently thanked him. He owed him big time!

Rano: Bani you and Jai, you didn't tell me, hugging her sister, I am so happy. Congratulations!

Bani felt hollow as everyone hugged her and wished her good luck, talking excitedly about their engagement. She didn't know why because of one night everything had changed, why did Jai want to marry her, what happened last night that changed everything for him. If there wasn't any love on his part how was this going to work.

Jai looked at the various facial expressions running across her face and promised himself that he was going to tell her everything once they were married. He couldn't risk anything before that, he knew that he had hurt her and now it was time to make things right. If that meant dealing with it this way so be it!

Chapter 11

The whole Walia Mantion was lit up. There were 3 special occasions today, first it was the 14th of February, Valentines Day, then it was Bani's Birthday and 3rd and most important their engagement.

Pink balloons beautifully set up on the side railings of the stairs with red big ribbons in bows following through. Jai was impatient, they were supposed to arrive half an hour ago and they weren't here yet. What if Bani ran away, or decided she didn't want to go through with it, than what, what he would do than. Gulping his drink he wiped his mouth.

RAno: don't worry mamaji, they are on their way, they got delayed at the hotel.

Jai heaving a huge sigh, she didn't know that there was a huge party thrown in her favor and he was excited to see her reaction. He wanted to show her off in front of the entire world. He had made sure that the whole world knew about his reunion; know about his bride to be.

Bani clad in a beautiful pink and bronze sari sat quietly in the car. Everything felt like a daze to her. Today she was going to be engaged and next week married. Soon after her graduation things happened so fast that it was like a blink of an eye. Getting of at the entrance, she stood there nervously waiting for Rashi and her mum. Looking at the huge palace type house she exclaimed in awe at the huge bright lights falling from the roof tops to the bottom, jaise koi dhulan ke ghooghat sir par ho all in different shades of pink, looking beautiful.

On the front as the door was opened all she could se were candle lights and diyas around the whole place. Jaise koi janath meh agaya ho! The whole front area was lit up beautifully. The perfect song played in the background:

Tum aaye to hawaaon mein ek nasha hai
Tum aaye to fizaaon mein rang sa hai
Yeh rang saare hai bas tumhaare
Aur kya, aur kya, aur kya

Tum aaye to hawaaon mein ek nasha hai
Tum aaye to fizaaon mein rang sa hai
Yeh rang saare hai bas tumhaare
Aur kya, aur kya, aur kya

As Jai walked up to Bani and stood there looking at her. She was so beautiful. Bani looked up, her eyes moist, this was the moment she had always dreamt of and to have it out here in the open like this was just unbelievable.

Eh hey hey, aah haa haa
Tum aaye ho to dekh lo
Naya naya sa lage yeh jahaan, ho
Haan haan haan haan haan, oh ho

Haseen haseen hai yeh zameen
Dhula dhula sa hai yeh aasmaan
Tum ho to hai yeh samaa
Aur kya, aur kya, aur kya, aur kya

Holding her hands he slipped a ring on her finger all this time not taking his eyes away from her, capturing her look. Bringing her hand to his lips and kissing it. Everyone clapping around them!

Bani glared to her hands and than up at him her tears flowing without shame, in her heart she knew how much she loved this man but her heart failing to understand what all was happening. Kahi yeh sapna toh nahi. At the back Rashi handed her the ring to put on Jai's hands, shaking she took it and looking at his hands she looked up again;

Dhadak raha hai dil mera
Jhuki jhuki hai palkein yahan, ho
Haan haan haan haan haan, oh ho

Jo dil mein ho, voh keh bhi do
Ruki ruki si hai yeh daastaan
Jazbaat maange zabaan
Aur kya, aur kya, aur kya, aur kya

Bani placed the ring when everyone roared and the whole lights were lit with Jai smiling and hugging her on the side looking at everyone. Petals of red roses falling on them as Bani looked up gasping on how beautiful everything was around the house. Jai playfully pointing his index finger to his cheeks for his kiss and Bani just stood there, did she just promise her whole life to him.

Tum aaye to hawaaon mein ek nasha hai
Tum aaye to fizaaon mein rang sa hai

Yeh rang saare hai bas tumhaare

Aur kya, aur kya, aur kya

Turning to Jai, as Jai slowly bent down kissing her lightly on the lips much to her embarrassment, happy birthday and happy Valentines Day sweetheart. Bani didn't know to laugh or cry not registering what she was feeling as Jai hugged her. This time next week you will be mine Bani all she heard him say was those few words.

As Champaign were toasted and the cake was cut Jai drank like he never did before, he was very happy. Holding Bani by his side he declared their wedding on national TV to have found his woman. Bani not comprehending all this felt happy inside, but was he genuinely happy or is he trying to satisfy his guilt for God knows what happened that night. Why would things be not simpler?

That night, as she lay in bed she looked at the ring on her hand. A big fat diamond that glowed even in the dark! Holding her palm with her other hand to her heard she thought how 2 very important birthdays and one very important day – Valentines Day had changed her life. One where Jai didn't even acknowledge her love for him and today when she was soon to be his wife. She remembered on how possessively he had held her throughout the evening introducing her to everyone, actually proud to have her by his side. The quick glances he gave her or the slow sensual kisses he gave her here and there. She would turn pinker in her already pink sari but she was in love with him. She was deeply madly in love with him and next week this time she was going to be Mrs BAni Walia. Closing her eyes she smiled making a silent wish at the night outside, please, please let this be perfect, let this be the dream I had all those years ago. Please let him love me too as sleep finally caught her exhaustion.

Chapter 12

Bani sat awkwardly in her shadi ka chola in his room on his bed, which was going to be their room and their bed. Turning a deeper shade of red thinking of what was going to come after this. She was married, she was Mrs Bani Walia! OH God! aab kya hoga? Her eyes were covered by her viel, the only things visible to her were the floor and her sweaty palms clad in the mehendi of his name.

Raashi had jokingly said: ghooghat jija jee uthaye ge samjhi tu kuch maath karna
, magar ha kaal subha sari details chahiye jee! Making Bani blush.

Rano: tu bhoth janti hai, teri bari ayegi taab dhekugi

Raashi: ofcoz maine kitabo meh padah hai kiu Bani hinting to her friend the naughty stuffs they used to do and closing the door of the room leading everyone out: acha chalo chalo…dhulan ko aaram karne do!

Bani heard noises outside and than she heard the door open. Jai stood there gazing at her on his bed, their bed. Closing the door behind him locking it, she was his, finally his. Walking he sat on the edge and looked at her nervous palms and quivering lips. Tilting her head up her eyes covered by her veil he gently kissed her quivering lips. Bani gasped and closed her eyes.

Jai smiled, he had seen her grow up well actually they had grown up together. Six years younger than him he had never thought that one day he would marry her. Lifting her veil up, he looked at her. Eyes closed she looked the true picture of a Goddess. NO, his Goddess! Bani was breathing heavily she was scared that he might here her heart pounding so loud.

Taking her hand and kissing the palm of her hand noticing the deep shade of her mehendi: kya yeh sach hai Bani ke mehendi jitna ghera ho uthna hi pyar pati kartah hai? Softly he asked.

Bani opened her eyes looked at him, what was he trying to say; nodding her head in a yes her jewelry making all the noise.

Jai took her bangles out kissing her wrist each time driving Bani's mental stability riot. Going up to her earring, kissing her ear lobe as he removed it whispering "you are so beautiful Bani," moving to her neck, hugging her in the process to take the huge necklace out kissing the neck area to her other earring, taking it out and kissing the lobe again. Dropping kisses down to her hand for the final set of bangles left. Bani breathing hard didn't know what got in her but she loved it and this was relaxing her, making her less nervous. The only jewellery left were her bindiya and payal. As if getting her thought Jai looked at her and undit the bindiya kissing her forehead gently.

Bani: Jai meh!

Jai: shhhhshhhhhhh Bani sunno, kissing her cheeks going to her neck her shoulder as he removed the side of her blouse, kissing the very place her blouse had been. Listen to the winds; they are dancing to the tunes of love. Bani turning her head closing her eyes as Jai with his finger tilted her face back to his. Her eyes opening to find him so very close to her lips his breath like instigation to fire on her body.

Jai: do u know how hard it has been to have you and not have you?

Bani confused with those words looked at him not having the courage to do anything but to be caught in the fire of his love: Jai I

Jai: silencing her with his lips, taking them in a passionate kiss as he laid her down……..shhhhhhsssssssssssssshhhhhhh Bani aaj nahi…aaj sirf pyar karne do ……kissing her again…taking her high to points there were no returning back for either of them…..

Tere bin there is no desire
Tere bin my worlds on fire
Tere bin I cant fly high high higher

Chapter 13

Bani woke up early morning to find something tickling her ear, she tried to move it but it won't stop. Opening her eyes reality hit her and she realized she was in Jai' s arms, going red at the thought of what all transpired last night. Lowering her gaze, a smile apparent on her face, Bani couldn't help blushing. She was in Jai's arm and he was looking at her lazily. Could this be all a dream!

Jai: gdmrng beautiful!

Bani; really shy, good morning!

Jai: sleep good? The hint in his words made her even more embarrassed and she blushed like anything.

Jai: u look cute doing that nuzzling her neck and kissing her cheeks, Bani smiling trying to get out.

Bani: Jai meh

Jai holding her back not letting her go.. meh kya as Bani tried to mover away, oh God this is so embarrassing!

Jai: no wait Bani I have to talk to you, mujhe tumse baath karni hai

Bani: looked up at him, there it was he was guilty and that's why he had married her!

Jai: stop assuming things in that head of yours and listen, smiling at her. Taking a deep breath he turned on his back pulling her on his chest. Uss roz at the hotel room, nothing happened Bani!

Bani getting up slightly looking at him, Jai looked at her face with no expression and continued: you were drunk and in a very emotional state, you told me things which I don't think you would have ever said to me. Bani looked at him, agar kuch hua nahi and after last night she was convinced nothing did than why he married her.

Bani: lekin?

Jai: let me continue Bani, you were the baby sister of my best friend and young. You were 16 and I was 23 Bani. How was I supposed to take you seriously? Tarun and I u know we had this deal, no family. Sitting up and pulling her with him that pained expression I saw on the day we last met, before you left for school, haunted me for months and I didn't know what to do other than indulge myself in many woman I knew to forget it and I almost did until I saw you at the airport that day. You were different Bani, all grown up and beautiful. You were more confident and sure of yourself and what hurt was you didn't give me a time or the day. You hated me Bani.

Bani: no I didn't! I

Jai: yes I found that out that on your graduation day, smiling at her straightening some loose tendrils falling on her face.

Bani: Jai I'm trying to say

Jai: no listen to me. It was after that kiss on Rano's mehendi night that finally everything finally came to me. I needed you Bani, always but I never accepted that feeling for you. I guess you should have known after that car scene smiling like a weasel as Bani starred at him. But I needed to know whether you felt the same way or not and thank God for your jealousy that day you drank and told me everything. Honestly whoever made alcohol did the best thing in the world, who says it's bad for heatlh.

Bani really embarrassed looking away when Jai held her chin and looked into her eyes: it was than I knew that I had to win your love back and that night when u passed out, Bani's eyes wide "passed out", yes passed out Jai continued. Again smiling! When you passed out I got an evil plan and got together with Rashi and Tarun to get you married to me.

Bani: Raashi and bhaia?

The day of our engagement I was the happiest man on earth, didn't you realise that? Looking at her

Bani: yeah I thought so but I wasn't sure?

Jai: sure of what Bani?

Jai: kya bani? Sure of what?

Bani: I have always loved you and I looking down I still do but I didn't know whether

Jai: u didn't, how cold you not have known Bani?

Bani looked up her eyes teary as she started to cry: because that day you said I was young and nave and….. as Jai putting his finger on her lips and kissed her tears "I LOVE YOU" Bani, I really do, why do you think I went through with all this even after you showed me nothing but hatred. I love you very much. Bringing her close and hugging her.

Bani crying and laughing hugging him back: really you love me…oh Jai why didn't you say anything, I love you too.

Jai: pulling her back, you promise, all forgiven?

Bani: kissing his cheeks and hugging him, yes; yes; yes; I promise, forever and always, I love you!

Jai turning her around and getting on top his eyes full of mischief.

Bani: Jai????????? Smiling at him now

Jai: what? Shadi kya hai bhai koi aise waise nahi bending down to seal her lips with his. Claming them, knowing how much love she had for him and how he was going to spend the rest of his life making up to it! This time Bani did not hesitate or shy away, she had given him everything she had only this time there was no holding back. Putting her hands around his neck she pulled him even closer. Closer to her heart to never ever let go!

Epilogue

Mama Mama?? Mama she was crying really hard

Bani ran at hearing her daughter's wails, kya hua Krishna, kiu itna chila rahi ho.

Looking at her 16 year old daughter who by chance was also born on Feruary 14th the following year of her marriage! Looking like her mum in every respect but very much her dad in attitude. Strong stubborn and determined!

Bani: kya hua bitya??

Krishna sobbed falling down on her parent's bed crying on her moms lap. Mom woh mujhe pasand nahi kartah, kehta hai im too young and immature for him…still sobbing.

Bani smiled, she knew how that felt: kisne bitya??

Krishna: woh Sidharth hai nah, usne kaha.

Jai leaning on the door frame smiled at the apple of his eye, listening intently to what was being communicated between mother and daughter.

Krishna: maine kaha ke meh use pyar karti hu aur usne usne kaha meh bhoth choti hu…crying out loud now…that im nave, can you believe it mama, meh kitni smart hu hai na?

Bani smiling looked up at Jai her statement hitting home and Jai smiled back. Now who was this idiot who hurt my baby, one day he was going to come running after her for sure.

Jai moving to his daughter: honey u don't have to cry for that. Maybe he just hasn't realized it yet, winking to Bani who had folded her hands and was looking at him with an expression that said; oh really?

As Krishna sat up in-between her parents she smiled: really papa aap ko lagta hai.

Jai; definitly sweety, mujhe in baton meh kafi experience hai! Smiling at his daughter.

Krishna wiping her tears; theek hai nah im going to apply for Harvard next year and prove to him that im no rich spoilt brat he thinks I am, running to the door, only to come back kissing her parents: I love you papa, I love you mama, thanks! Running away and turning at the door: mama aapne papa ko kaha kya??

Bani shaking her head in a no: abhi nahi! smiling

Krishna winking at her mom and best friend in the whole world: all the best giving her a thumbs up and running off.

Jai moving closer and hugging his wife: kissing her neck

Bani; Jai??

Jai: what? Acting all innocent pulling her more to him.

Bani: laughing and holding him back

Jai; care to tell me ma beti meh kya baath hui hai, aur ma papa ko kya batane wali hai??

Bani still the same beautiful woman she has always been, eyes downcast and really shy: woh

Jai: woh ?? woh Kaun bhai?? Worried and shifting back, chakar kya hai?? Kahi??

Bani: laughing shayad!

Jai: what?? Bani whats happening??

Bani: mujhe na kisisi aur se pyar hogeya hai

Jai: what …he was serious now, he was still handsome right, the same guy she married and now ….and why was she all smiling about it…mujhse bhi zyada acha hai??

Bani; bilkul enjoying this too much and smiling, tumse bhi zyada, khud se bhi zyada.

Jai: when did u meet him?? Standing up mad now

Bani: kuch teen mahine phele…tumbhi the

Jai; were at? Very serious.

Bani: sitting calmly, one leg over the other, swinging it lightly: woh teen mahi phele jaab paris gaye the taab

Jai: on our wedding anniversary

Bani: yup

Jai: this doesn't make sense coz she was with him all that time….they hardly left their room and if they did it was together.

Bani: kya hua? smiling at him.

Jai: and how often do u meet, talk??

Bani: bus roz bataien hoti hai, jaab bhi jee chahe

Jai: and has he ever come here?

Bani: counting the months, shayad che (6) mahine meh!

Jai: Bani???????? Really mad pulling her, are you serious about this, who is this, I have to meet him

Bani: miloge toh tumbhi pyar karne lagoge

Jai: what???

Bani: encircling her hands around her husbands neck and smiling up at him: budhu jaab apne bete ko dheko to kya pyar nahi karoge.

Jai: thinking, beta?? Mera beta and than suddenly, what you mean..you mean that you are

Bani nodding her head in a yes, Jai lifting her up from the bed and shouting in happiness: im going to be a father, now, we are having another baby

Bani laughing as she nodded her head in agreement to him, shssh neech karo mujhe, Jai placing her down and than smiling, when did u know?

Bani: kaal? Going to the cupboard and getting a print of the sonogram and that's how I also know it's a boy.

Jai worried about her age and what not Bani shutting him up and pulling him into a bear hug, im fine aur doctor aunty ne kaha hai that im perfectly normal and it should be a good pregnancy.

Jai: and what did Krishna say?? She didn't feel too old to be a sister or threatened for that matter?

Bani: she is thrilled to have a baby bother to bully, laughing Bani related him the reaction she had when her daughter found out.

Krishna: ma meh na uski choti ma hongi aur meh usko college lajaugi aur sabhi ko kahugi mera beta hai…laughing and hugging her mum.

Jai hugging his wife, I love you, thank you baby, I love you so much! He was the luckiest man on earth. There wasn't a day he would imagine life without her.

Jai: smiling and looking at her…lifting her up, with a mischievous glint to his eyes

Bani: Jai?? Kya kar rahe ho?? Knowing fully well what that meant

Jai: winking at her, you have to admit honey; I still have it laughing at the expression Bani threw at him.

Bani: really?

Jai: koi shak??? Kissing her I love you!

Bani: forever and always?

Jai: forever and always honey!

Entry No. 11 :

My Best Friend's Daughter

Siggy M

Dear Diary,

Practicing in front of the mirror is an utter waste of time. I just cannot say anything to Bani especially since she calls me uncle. I cannot find the courage to tell her the truth. I don't want to lose her and I just don't know what to do….

"Jai just when are you going to tell Bani that she is married to you?" demanded Dr.Ranvijay Chopra, his beard shaking with fury" I mean man the whole world will know about it except her. Would that be fair to her?"

Jai Walia said nothing. He stood against the creaking gate, his arms folded and eyes closed.

JAI!" Dr Chopra shook him hard "When man? At this rate, you cannot keep the truth from her for long. Won't it be better that she learnt it from you than from somewhere else?"

The eyes opened with painstaking effort and he said tonelessly" I don't know how to tell her Vijay. Where do I start?"

"Right from the beginning Jai! The beginning is the right place to start."

"The beginning"Jai thought bitterly "the beginning was on that horrible day when Nishikant Dixit died and Bani Dixit moved in to his house. Yes that was when it all started...."

********************

It had been a deceptively glorious day, bearing not even a hint of the brewing storm that was preparing to strike Jai Walia's well ordered methodical life and throw it in to complete disarray. The weather had been like a song, extremely pleasant with the sun smiling, a gentle breeze blowing away and the birds chirping happily though the Walia man had no eyes for the sweet pleasures of nature. Time was precious, every second of it and the man who didn't realize its value would be shooed away in to oblivion in no time. And Jai Walia had no plans to get lost in to oblivion. Certainly not! As usual he had risen up with the sun, performed his morning ablutions, partaken of a hurried breakfast and had been in the middle of dictating notes to his unfortunate secretary when the phone rang with a startling persistence. Jai scowled, picked up the phone and barked in to it "Yes?"

"Jai this is Ranvijay here. My friend, Nishikant doesn't have much time. Will you come?"

"Sill question Vijay. Of course I am coming!"

********************

When he had arrived at his friend's old fashioned unpretentious villa which was called 'Nadir meet', Jai felt a sudden foreboding of….he searched for the right word-evil? Danger? Ah danger seemed to be the right word. Yes he felt 'danger'! From what? He thought frowning. Nonsense! This life was so short. Where was the time for getting morbid? Shaking his head he pushed open the creaking gate and immediately Ranvijay appeared from nowhere and led him in to the house.

"Nishikant passed away yesterday Jai. We thought it best to burn his body immediately."

Jai got up from his bamboo chair, his face contorting in irritation "Damn! And to think I came all the way here for nothing! Why the hell didn't you inform me earlier?"

Ranvijay got up too and scolded him "Really Jai how insensitive can you get! Nishikant was your best friend. HE DIED. HE IS NO MORE. And you talk about a wasted trip?"

"Vijay you know me. I don't like pretence. Nishikant was my best friend. I would have done anything for him. And that is why I didn't think twice before foregoing a tempting deal to rush here. But what is the point of my coming here if there is nothing I can do? What is the point in wasting time? I don't need to prove what I feel for people who really matter to me by running from one end of the globe to another. Do I?"

Ranvijay only sighed "Jai I cannot change you but hope someday somebody will and you get to stop and smell the roses. Anyway you are wrong. There is a lot you can do. You know Nishikant didn't die a peaceful death. He suffered a lot not because of physical pain but because of the worry that was haunting him. And he hoped you would ease that worry. That is why he was most anxious to see you before he departed to the other world."

Jai raised his brows as if to ask "What worry?"

"Bani Dixit" Ranvijay said simply "Nishikant's daughter."

Jai's brows shot even higher. In reply Ranvijay pointed towards the day room and without saying another word picked up his bags and left.

Hearing the name Jai forgot to even scowl after Dr Chopra "Bani…Bani…" he kept uttering the name again and again as he frowned in an effort to recollect that gloomy day Bani's mother had died in childbirth. Nishikant had completely collapsed on hearing the news so it was left to Jai to collect the baby. He had stood outside the operation theatre scowling and cursing and looking at his watch repeatedly. "Damned ugly business this!" he had muttered "This is so damned unfair! Why the hell should I suffer through somebody else's crisis?"

Suddenly a plump nurse had emerged from the OT and had abruptly put a small bundle in to his hands.

And he had stood gaping at the soft, warm wriggling little thing in his hands. My God! My God! She was so...so…she was so unutterably beautiful, so sacred...the whole atmosphere seemed to be have been transformed...seemed to be have been clothed in a soothing divine light…everything seemed so pure so sacred…shining with everlasting perfection…

An unbidden smile lifted a corner of his mouth as his trembling fingers cautiously felt her tiny feet her tiny hands and at once the tiny hand grasped his finger sending a wave of panic across him, unsettling him but also calming him. Her soft skin against his harsh mature male skin; His eyes clouded, something inside him crumbled. And to his great mortification he had cried. No, not cried he had sobbed like a baby holding the fragile little thing against his chest like he never wanted to part from it.

His cheeks went pink even thinking about that.

"But the whole thing had been incredible, almost surreal" Jai Walia recollected, wondering how the fragile infant had grown up into. Had she taken after Nishikant or Kiran? "And would she still overwhelm him and move him to tears?" he mused, brimming with curiosity. Well he would find out and in quick strides he was outside the day room, his hands on the door knob when the very same sense of a sudden foreboding of danger of the morning assailed him again. "Absurd!" and dismissing the warning signals; Jai Walia opened the door of the day room.

Dear Diary,

I should never never never have gone to that damned Villa! And even if I couldn't help that I should have never entered that day room! I will never be the same again and I have nobody else but myself to blame…"

He entered the room and made a quick survey. The room was a great one it seemed full of large bay windows. "Damned silly to have so many bay windows" Jai observed with a frown of annoyance. It marred the beauty of the room. Nishikant had always had a lousy taste. He peered around and his critical eye detected an old faded sofa set in the corner and a few straight back chairs with worn out cushions scattered about the room. He shook his head in distaste. What were people like Nishikant made up of? He was rolling in money yet he had been very happy and satisfied with second ratedness, with being second rate. "No ambition." He shook his head again. As he was about to turn back he saw her!

She sat on one of the chairs, upright and stiff, as if carved out of stone. The sunlight from the bay window opposite her fell on her and her face shone like...like- Jai searched for the right word and failed.

"A golden glowing goddess! O lord this was the danger his brain had been cautioning him against!"

A slant golden light clothed her in its beam imparting an ethereal glow to her. Her face devoid of any make-up, a white netted stole draped around her head, absolutely no jewellery and a serene expression gracing her pretty angelic face; to Jai Walia she was a vision, an angel who had come down to the earth for a sojourn! He stared at her drinking in her beauty, his mouth hanging ridiculously open. He stood frozen and immobile, something seemed to seize him grip him like he was a piece of raw clay and against his will shaped him molded him in to something he didn't really understand. His blood stirred, his hear beat quickened. The world seized to exist, everything around seemed to merge with one another, he was going crazy. The room he felt was swimming around him.

"This is so bloody weird!" he thought. He had to get out of this place before he was detected or he'll be trapped in to something he would never be able to get out of. But it was as if his muscles were frozen, his blood had coagulated. He couldn't move. He stared fascinated with terror as the eyes slowly opened and looked at him impassively.

"Run away Jai!"

Gradually recognition seeped in to those brilliant black opals and tears sprang up. Uttering a cry she ran towards him and impulsively throwing herself upon him, wept convulsively "JAI UNCLE! It's terrible here. I cannot live here anymore without Papa! Please take me away far far away from here...Please Uncle…Please take me with you…."

Yes, he would never be the same again, not after she had touched him. And he had nobody else but himself to blame….

********************

"So Mr Walia as you can see there is no other way. You have to marry Bani Dixit" finished Tarun Sablok who was Nishikant's very trusted, brilliant, handsome young lawyer.

"Come again!" Jai snapped "You don't play these nasty games with me lawyer or I'll teach you such a lesson…"

"Be reasonable Jai. You promised me earlier that you were ready to do anything for Nishikant. Will you go back on your word?"

"Cut it Vijay! Reasonable huh? But the scheme you and this jackass lawyer are trapping me in to is hardly reasonable. I AM NOT marrying Bani Dixit and that too surreptitiously. That's Final! No Vijay, when I say No it means No!"

Ranvijay signaled Tarun and he left quietly.

For a long time silence reigned during which Jai sat with his mouth clammed shut like an Oyster's shell and the doctor sat scratching his beard wondering how to bring Jai around. "Maybe a different approach would do the trick" he thought and decided to try one last time "Jai. No Jai I am your friend. I won't put you in to trouble. But I was Nishikant's friend too and Bani is like my daughter. And right now you are the only one who can help the poor girl out. Would you want the dear lass to be cut out of her rightful share and thrown out in to the harsh world, with nobody, with not even a single penny to her name, going begging and counting on the merciless world's mercy?"

Jai remained stubbornly silent.

'Jai" the doctor pleaded "Jai, Nishikant was an ass. When Kiran left him, she carried away his brains too. How else will you account for the ass brained clause he had asked Tarun to include in his will? The point is why should the girl pay for her crack father's wild ideas? You do realize, don't you that if she didn't marry within a week, all of this wealth will go to charity?"

Jai said noncommittally "Please do give me the details again, about the clause I mean."

"According to the will, Bani will be able to enjoy her father's property only after she completes twenty five years. But if Nishikant died before she turned twenty five, she would have to get married within a week after his death. Or else the property will go to the local charity."

Jai scowled "Damn Nishikant! I cannot believe he was my best friend. But Vijay, why me? Why not somebody else? I mean some young fellow who would…"

"Who would probably marry the child for her money and throw her out before you could say "Hello"! No Jai it has to be you because you are the only eligible bachelor who can be trusted with Bani. Think about the poor girl Jai. Think of it as charity, if not anything else."

Jai threw up his hands in surrender "Ok you win. But I have one condition. Bani will not be kept in the dark Vijay. I cannot cheat her."

"Jai how can you talk so when you have seen her? She is totally broken. And moreover she is such a young thing. She turned eighteen just two days back. She's suffered a huge shock. Why do you want to add some more to her already overstuffed baggage of woes? She would be startled and anyway she is too young to understand what is good for her. Listen Jai, it will be a very simple business. Just sign a bunch of papers and you take Bani with you. You tell her the truth after she gets a hold on herself and is level headed enough to perceive the facts and take a sensible decision. Just a matter of few days Jai. So you are marrying Bani and it's settled, isn't it? He pleaded "Jai I will take care of everything. Just say yes."

"This is so damned unfair! Why the hell should I suffer through somebody else's crisis?"

Ranijay silently invoked the names of all the Gods he knew and begged that Jai would answer in the affirmative.

The cold "Yes....." felt like music to Dr Ranvijay Chopra's ears.

Dear Diary,

I wish mother had been alive. She would have been thrilled that fate had managed to trick a stubborn confirmed bachelor like me in to finally tying the knot at this ancient age and that too with a girl who is at least twenty years my junior. On second thoughts maybe it is all mother's doing? Maybe up there she is grinning at me. It won't be too far-fetched to assume that mother being mother has all the gods in her pocket and has in all probability, engineered this whole business….

The whole thing had been childishly simple. Ranvijay had lived up to his promise and had taken care of everything. Bani Dixit, still reeling under the shock of her father's sudden demise, dressed in mourning white clothes, had dutifully signed all the papers without asking any questions. Like a zombie Jai Walia went through all the legal formalities and it was only on the flight back to Delhi that the enormity of what he had gotten in to, struck him.

"Keep your mouth shut Jai! And consult me before you decide to do anything fancy!" Ranvijay had instructed him when he had handed them in to the car that was waiting to take them to the airport and from there, to his house…to their house!

He glanced at the slumped figure on the seat next to him. Mouth slightly open, she was sleeping the sleep of the just. He watched her chest go up and down, in rhythmic precision. She made such a pretty picture, like a near adult nymph; her silky scattered hair, rose bud mouth, innocent rose flushed skin, flushed picture perfect face…the pristine white skirt and blouse adding to her purity…that Nishikant was her biological father was laughable. Who ever married her would be a lucky b******. And with a slight sense of shock Jai realized that he was that lucky b******!

He stared at the sleeping goddess for sometime, spellbound as if he was drawn towards her by an invisible pull." My God!" he thought desperately" What is happening to me? Why is she sucking me in to something I cannot understand?

She stirred in her sleep and her wayward arm rested on his thigh.

Gulping he grabbed the magazine that the air hostess was handing out and steadfastly concentrated only on his reading material and not on 'anything else' for the reminder of the trip, until they had reached 'their' house.

Dear Diary,

I married Bani Dixit because…I wanted to…

"Who is this pretty thing Munna? Hai Bhagwan! Don't tell me you married her!"

"Wow!" thought Jai. Billo Kaki, his faithful housekeeper and the only family he could boast of, until now was right on mark but he couldn't tell her that. So he simply stood saying nothing.

The figure behind him looked at him and since he seemed to be in no mood for introductions she took the task upon herself. She came forward, looked at him again and then said smiling shyly "I...I am Bani Dixit. My father and Jai uncle were best friends. And my father is...is…no more…."

Her happy past with her father rushed over her like a flood and coupled with the strain of the past few days, Bani succumbed to quick convulsive sobs. Billo Kaki gathered the girl in her arms and hush hushing her led her inside the house "Now it's all right my dear. It is very good Jai brought you here. You will be very happy here. Now now…"

He looked at the retreating pair and then went and locked himself up in the comfort of his bathroom and stared at his reflection in the mirror.

"Dear God had all this actually happened? Maybe it was just a dream? He pinched himself "Owww! Damn!" it was real alright, as real as the marriage certificate that lay safe with Dr Ranvijay Chopra!

He had actually married a girl whom he had carried in his arms when she was a new born…

SPLASH

The cold water felt like vicious pin pricks. He turned the tap to the other side...

And his wife hadn't a clue that she was his wife…

SPLASH

The hot water scalded his skin…

He was a damned worm. He ought to rot in hell…

SPLASH

The alternating hot and cold water assault on his sensitive skin caused angry red sores to erupt on his face. He scratched one and thick red blood oozed out. Scowling he splashed cold water and stared at himself again...

He had gone to Mumbai as a confident single. Now he was back at Delhi as a bewildered double.

He shook his head. What a mess!

Dear Diary,

Exactly, since when did Bani become in charge of me? She gets up way before I do, serves me my morning tea and paper, and takes care of my clothes, my food…And it feels like it has always been like this. I tell her she must concentrate on the new course she has taken up. She only smiles and shows me her grades. She's a wizard, that kid…my wife! Today Kaki told me Bani learnt to make besan ke ladoo because "Jai Uncle likes them"! But I wish she won't do all those things for me. Because I love the way she takes care of me…like a wife…

"Jai I thank you on behalf of Nishikant (May his soul rest in peace, poor fellow).I promise you this won't have to continue for long. Just a few days more and once Bani is over her grief, you can tell her everything. Just a few days more!" Ranvijay had said.

'Few days more' had stretched in to weeks, weeks in to months and months in to years. In the blink of an eyelid five years had passed and Bani Dixit had unobtrusively stamped her identity on everything he had thought he had owned, including his chaste heart. By her tact, her gentle persuasiveness and sheer sweetness of temper, she had tamed his tendency for insensate resistance to tender feelings and had smoothened out his roughness, making him more warm, patient and generally, tolerably temperate and had cured him of his obsession with time. He still swore by punctuality but he no longer bullied lesser mortals like his secretary to get up at unearthly hours to dictate codswallop to them nor did he bring the house down if breakfast was served at 9:01 am instead of 9 am.

Initially though, his servants and Billo kaki had watched open-mouthed in amazement bordering on shock as Bani seduced her way in to Jai's life, imprinted herself upon it and slowly but certainly got him dancing to her tune. Now it was regular business. Bani instructing in her gentle way and Jai following it meekly was a common sight. And it was not like Jai was the only one who had undergone a make-over at Bani's hands. The whole of the Walia mansion, including its various inmates, living or non-living had seemed to have had a magic wand waved over.

Billo noted with a smile that ever since the blessed child had graced her Munna's mansion, the house felt a great deal pleasanter and safer. No longer did it feel like the Walia mansion housed a living Volcano that would erupt any minute.

She was not sure but just maybe, if god willed of course…Bani as the bahu of the house….but she would never put the idea in any of their heads and try to influence them. If it was meant to, it would happen!

With a contented smile, she watched Bani charge in to Munna's room with bucket and pail.

Hopefully things would go a step or two further...god willing of course!

********************

"Bani you should let Tony. I don't like you to do my room."

"I do."

No space for further argument!

"Uncle you better concentrate on your book."

Jai tried to follow her advice but it was impossible. Pretending to be engrossed in 'My experiments with truth', he shielded his face from the blinding sunlight with his hands and stealthily watched her through his fingers. She was in her comfortable worn out corduroy pants and a green turtle neck sweater, her sure hands expertly scrubbing the floor, face bright from the exercise, her chest jiggling from the movement of scrubbing and shining eyes fixed on her work.

He closed his eyes in agony.

If Bani Dixit had been desirable at eighteen, she was supremely irresistible at twenty three. At eighteen she had been a beautiful child but these five years had seen her womanly contours definitely form, lending grace and charm in every movement, her delicately modeled bones acquiring strength and character, her girlish face fined down in to a more mature dangerously rousing beauty, that for Jai Walia, every day was becoming an exercise in self-control.

He tried to look away but his eyes stared at her, against his will, sweeping admiringly over her ample charms.

"O dear the dear waist that I could just grasp in one lone hand, her softness like velvet…The best part of her was her lips which seemed to be permanently stained with strawberry sauce and he would like to…Jai averted his eyes from her in an effort to check his dishonorable thoughts and tried to go back to his book in vain.

He failed.

He could now hear her in the bathroom, rinsing her wash cloth and humming a merry tune.

A sweltering sweat broke over him; he felt his chest swell...

"No no Jai you are not feeling anything!

His stomach throbbed; crestless waves of desire and passion pulsated through him…

"She has no effect on you Jai. She's only a child! Hell no she's a woman!"

He felt a wild desire seething through his blood…

"Damn!" he wanted her and Right now!

He got up suddenly; pushed open the bathroom door roughly, strode towards her, plucked her from the ground in one powerful movement and seized her by the waist. A shallow cry escaped her, her lips parted in confusion inflaming him. Pulling her towards him, he hungrily bent to taste those strawberry sauce stained lips when he felt her shiver under his hands.

Reality struck.

He released her and stared at her horrified.

"O my God! What had come over me?"

Without saying anything, he was out of the room in three quick strides, leaving a stunned Bani Dixit staring at the door through which he had departed.

Dear Diary,

I realize this cannot go on. I can no longer pretend she is only my best friend's daughter. What I did today was unpardonable. Dear lord, somehow, somewhere she has managed to become my wife and I am a man dammit! I too have feelings…

"Jai Uncle! UNCLE?"

Balancing the heavy tea tray in one hand and a stack of letters and the morning newspaper in the other, she called out to him again "Jai Uncle, are you up?"

Obviously he was not "Strange!" What was she to do now? Should she wake him up? She knew he had an important meeting today.

A slight frown creasing her forehead, she placed the things on his night table and tiptoed to his side and slowly removed the leopard print blanket to one side "Uncl…."

Her words froze on her mouth.

The eyes full of childlike simplicity and credulity, full of innocence and amazement gawped at the suddenly materialized vision, in amazement! What else was it but a vision? A vision…a Greek God- dark and exquisitely handsome, regal and sinfully sexy! Spread-eagled, lying in the soft leopard printed satin pool, like a majestic lion resting in his lair, his well toned trunk clothed in a well fitting sleeveless tee, exposing his superbly glistening well exercised bare arm held above his head in gay abandon and a tender smile caressing his lips; to her, he seemed to combine the qualities of a glorious savage and a reckless Casanova.

Completely enamored, snake eyes greedily lapped up every inch of the unexpected treat.

Suddenly the treat woke up and stared at her cross-eyed. The eyes now fully open, he sat up straight "Heck! Bani what the hell are you doing here?"

"I…I…actually Uncle...I…"

Yanking the blanket end from her hand savagely and covering himself up with it, he screamed at her "Get out! OUT! Next time I find you invading my privacy…"

Bani didn't hear the rest of it. She ran out without turning back.

********************

Jai banged his shaving set against his mirror and slowly watched the shards fall to the ground.

He grimaced.

Five years! For a full five years he hadn't slipped. But the past few months…

Jai ran a distressed hand across his hair. Where was all this heading to? He had tried and kept Bani at a safe distance. But without his knowledge she had somehow insinuated herself in his life. Or was it his fault? Maybe he should have been firmer and sent the message clearly. He shouldn't have allowed her so much freedom. He should have never allowed his face and actions to betray what he really felt for her.

What was the use of crying over spilt milk? It was too late now. Was it?

He had allowed her to come close, too close to him and affect him…too much!

He stared at himself in the mirror.

"Damn!"

This was not fair. This was just not.

********************

"Raashi will you lend me your boyfriend?"

Her friend placed her hands on her hips and said sternly "Bani as your friend and confidante, I'd hate to see you imagining nonsense and make a fool of yourself. Just what do you hope to achieve by borrowing my Pushkar and with that Valentine's party at the Walia mansion? Nothing Bani! Nothing will come out of it."

"Raashi, if you don't trust me with Pushkar I can hire a boyfriend."

"Bani dearest! I trust you completely because I know you don't possess my bad taste!" Raashi winked "Ok on a serious note, listen I have been to your house so many times and every time I felt that Mr Walia was always the gentleman and when ever he spoke about you there was a fatherly pride in his voice. Nothing else. Bani, you are his best friend's daughter, the daughter he can never have. I think you are imagining feelings he has never entertained about you. Just abandon these wild schemes and come on girl, get a life!"

Bani chewed her lips pensively. Was she wrong and Raashi right? "No" her heart whispered. Raashi's very plausible explanation couldn't account for that day when she was sure uncle had almost kissed her. Not only that. From their very first meeting so many little things had happened, so many little seemingly unimportant incidents and what about their chemistry, the language that their eyes spoke and understood and that mute something that existed between them, that she could feel even at a distance of fifteen feet? She was sure there was something more than what Jai uncle let on. Call it woman's intuition.

And she will find out the truth!

"I am decided Raashi. I will need lots of help from you. This has to be a party Jai uncle will not forget in a hurry. And for heaven's sake, give clear instructions to Pushkar. He's such a muddle head. Nothing should go wrong Raashi. I am counting on you…"

"Well I see there's no use trying to make you see sense. Fine! I promise to never let you down. "Operation Attack Jai Uncle begins!" Raashi giggled.

Bani looked straight ahead of her, her eyes shining with feverish determination.

"Take care hun! I am hoping you understand that you are putting everything at stake!"

********************

Jai Walia was back to being the slave-driver he had been before his life had been subjected to Bani's mellowing influence. He had created a record that day by shouting at six different people in five minutes, had literally reduced his secretary to a bundle of nerves and after proving to be everyone's personal death god, he was now moodily playing with his paper-weight.

"She is your best friend's daughter, your ward technically. But she is your wife too. And you desire her!

The phone rang with a peculiar insistence and Jai picked it up automatically "Yes?"

"Jai! Ranvijay here."

Jai waited with bated breath. What would it be this time?

"Good news Jai" Ranvijay chirped "This Tarun here is a real wizard! He has found a great solution to your problem! You no longer need to honor this bogus marriage Jai! Just a few formalities and you'll be free! Hop over here my friend, as soon as you can."

A vice closed around Jai's chest as he answered in a voice he could no longer recognize as his own "Yes Vijay. I will be there, tomorrow morning if possible."

The light outside was starting to wane, casting shadows. The chatter had ceased. The office was empty. Jai sat still, blessing the darkness and the silence, for it matched the bleakness within him. The shadows started lengthening and at last Jai got up wearily to go to the place that was home.

Would it always remain home?

********************

"Take care hun! I am hoping you understand that you are putting everything at stake!"

Bani had sat staring at the murky evening sky until it became murkier and she could no longer see anything. Sighing she got up and realized her limbs were numb with the January cold. She pinched her arms and legs, trying to restore the circulation. When they felt normal again, she went to her cupboard and extracted an extra shawl when something fell down. Frowning she picked up the old album.

A gasp escaped her. With trembling hands, she opened it and there he stood the potent tower of masculinity; Mr Jai Walia! Tall and regal, his features arrogant in cast, his head held high and the face proud and grim. But the eyes…..Bani inhaled noisily. It had been his eyes that had first drawn her to him.

And it had always been his eyes that had bewitched her, claimed nah demanded that she be drawn in to their spell…

She had been just five years old when her father, just to distract her and let him concentrate on his work, had dropped the album in her lap. She had scanned it with childish impatience and finding it boring had been about to throw it out of the window when he had arrested her. Even as a child, with her underdeveloped emotions she had been drawn to him like a suicidal moth towards a bright pitiless flame. She had stared at his picture, for hours, mesmerized by the molten warmth clumsily hidden behind the hardness.

Back then she had not known what it was that drew her back to his photo again and again. It was only on that day, several years later, when her father lay befuddled by drink, that she realized that his photo, those eyes supplied the comfort and warmth that her depressing life so glaringly lacked. She started talking to him, poured out her grievances, shared with him her happiness, little joys, she bickered with him, and she scolded him and loved him.

Very soon, his photo ceased to be just a photo. He became her confidante, her friend and then as she grew in years…her lover!

Her father, totally oblivious to Bani Dixit having infused a mere photo with life, often spoke to her about how his best friend was a good man but proud and callous and insensitive. A real dragon always spitting fire.

She had never believed her father but had only spared him a patient smile.

Nobody understood him. Only she did! Naturally! Only she could read the silent plea his eyes sent. The plea to rescue him from himself. A plea to show him to live life like it should be. A plea to show him… to love…

She couldn't pinpoint when or how the idea took birth that it would be Bani Walia who would teach Jai Walia the meaning of life and love. That she was created for him and him for her. She would infuse his life with love and warmth, garnish it with liveliness and he would protect her from the rain and cold and hot sun. There had been no doubts, no misgivings that her dreams will not materialize. Well maybe not immediately. But that was hardly a cause to worry oneself silly for it hardly mattered when.

Time flew. And with every day her dreams and her conviction in them only grew stronger.

She had been perfectly happy, keeping the house for her father, content with her virtual lover, never finding the need for the actual Jai Walia, until her father's health started deteriorating rapidly. A strange restlessness and an unknown dread had made home in her breast, so that all her waking hours passed in feverous contemplation and her nights assailed by nightmares. The day she turned eighteen, she needed strong arms and a practical mind by her side to comfort her, to take care of her, to embrace her responsibilities as its own and to love her. In short she needed her Jai uncle. The photo could but scarcely satisfy her needs.

And then Nishikant Dixit had died, leaving her alone and listless.

But she was not alone. She had her Jai uncle. He would come and take her away from this valley of doom in to his castle of flowers.

But..b...but…would he?

For the first time she questioned the credibility of her assumptions of such a long time. Would he? Were they really created for each other? What if he didn't come?

What if he was not in her fate?

This dreadful refrain playing and replaying in her head, she had sat in the day room, eyes closed, desperately and urgently wishing for Jai Walia to come thus assuring her that her dreams were no waking dreams but the only truth. She had sat there, praying and hoping, horribly afraid he wouldn't come.

But he did!

Even before she had opened her eyes, she had known, felt his presence. Unbelievable at first! She just couldn't believe that it was him in flesh and blood.

She had wondered if she hadn't conjured him. Maybe she had! Mad relief, happiness awe….the combination had had her rushing to where she belonged-in his arms. And she knew she had been right all along. The sun smiled, roses bloomed and she was with him in his mansion doing for him all the things she had always imagined she would, like…like….she never sought to fill in the blank. Time would, in its own sweet time!

Five years had vanished and she was a firm part of his life. She fit in to his house, in to his life like a well fitting glove. She had concentrated on making sure she continued being a perfect fit. Satisfied and content and happy, it had never occurred to her that there was a life beyond this. There was something more that could become hers. But yes. Since the past few months she had felt mild discontentment creep in to her. Every time she saw Raashi with Pushkar and other couples in each others' arms, she felt a pang she couldn't quite place, a kind of a sinking feeling, highlighting that something her life lacked.

There is something I haven't got yet. Something that is just above my head. I just have to jump a bit higher and I will reach it!

Do you like the tea Uncle?" she asked anxiously.

Jai smiled in spite of himself "Yes." And then looking at her eager young face" Very much! Very well made!"

Just that warm smile and Jai's presence again and the uneasiness disappeared like magic. She was just thinking nonsense. She got to scrub his floors, take care about his diet, wash his clothes including his inners and stare at him when ever she chose to- what else did one need in life?

Lot more!

He had shown her that…on that day……

Bani gritted her teeth "God blind me! I need him to hold me like that, squeeze the air out of me, those intense brown eyes upon me, only upon me willing me to get lost in to them, his hissing breath warming my face…his mouth upon mine, kissing me till the end of time…"

She wanted Jai Walia as her husband!

Bani got up, the shawl slipping away and threw the windows open. A blast of cold air hit her face.

Dear Diary,

Why is it that we don't always recognize the moment love begins, but we always recognize the moment it ends? And I ended my love, strangled it with my own bloody hands…damn me!

Jai stared at the ceiling for a long time.

"You no longer need to honor this bogus marriage Jai! Just a few formalities and you'll be free!"

He imagined a life like this; dark and cold, lonely and dismal...a life without the warmth of Bani's sunny smiles...a life without the playfulness of her eyes… a life without the buoyancy of her presence…a life without…Bani! A heartsick coldness rankled at his heart and he could taste the cold taste of despair. A dull emptiness all around…..Jai Walia sat up clutching his throbbing head. A drink! That's what he needed!

He had drained several glasses of poison in a matter of minutes. But the emptiness and pain remained stubbornly present. Clenching his teeth he got up unsteadily. He would go down and pour himself something stronger. If he couldn't get sleep the normal way, he would cheat and get it! Coggling his way down to the bar, he passed the kitchen. Low murmurs. "Must be the servants" he thought scowling.

"That's so true. Jai sir is such a changed man. Thanks to Bani ma'am… But I wonder. I mean do you think there's something going on between them?"

An obviously shocked voice answered back "How can you even? Can't you see the little missus looks up to him as father? She is his best friend's daughter. He probably thinks of her as his own daughter…he is so proud of her and her achievements, like a father would be of his daughter…never speak such nonsense again..."

"I suppose you are right. I reckon it will be the proudest day of his life when he marries her off!"

Jai Walia stood as if immobilized. It felt like cold hands had caught hold of his heart and were strangling it. Jai couldn't breathe. A cold sweat drenched him while a scorching pain seared through his temples.

"Can't you see the little missus looks up to him like her father? She is his best friend's daughter……"

Damn! He held his head. The dull emptiness surrounded him. A sense of intense loss all around….his world stopped spinning. The pain became intolerable…

"It will be the proudest day of his life when he marries her off…"

Lord that hurt, hurt like hell! Why? Damn! She had no right to do that to him…to lead him on and then….she had no right….his best friend's daughter? Only that?...she was his wife! He wouldn't allow her to just leave him like that…She had no right…he would teach her!

Growling like a wounded tiger, he took the stairs three at a time and stood outside Bani's door for a moment. What the hell was he doing?

"Can't you see the little missus looks up to him like her father? She is his best friend's daughter……"

His lips trembled with rage. Savagely he pushed open the door. There she stood near the window, her back to him.

"Can't you see the little missus looks up to him like her father? She is his best friend's daughter…It will be the proudest day of his life when he marries her off…"

An inhuman cry escaped his lips; he turned her around roughly to face him.

She stared at him flummoxed "Uncle? Are you alight?"

Uncle! Dear god!

"GET OUT! Out of my life! You have become an albatross around my neck!" he spat, his hands digging in to her soft shoulders causing her to wince in pain and shock" I cannot get rid of you soon enough. You are only my best friend's daughter. A liability! OUT! Leave me in PEACE! I beg you…"

He started at the expression on her face. Staggering back, he held his pounding head. Had he said something he shouldn't have? Lord he shouldn't have touched the drink tonight. O lord the room swam before him….He didn't understand anything…

Dear…Dear…

He bolted out of her room without as much as even a backward glance at Bani, threw some clothes in to his night bag and escaped to the airport.

Maybe it was as well that he hadn't looked back.

********************

Jai Walia walked tiredly towards one of the bay windows and looked in front of him with unseeing eyes. His eyes didn't care for Nadir Meet's well manicured garden blooming with cheerful flowers, the trees full of luscious fruits and the sweet day songs of the birds that lived on the trees. The luring pleasures of nature no longer held any meaning for him. They never had before Bani entered his life and had amongst other things, taught him to respect and admire the many bountiful secrets and surprises of Mother Nature.

The weather here at Mumbai was a direct contrast to that of Delhi's. The Mumbai weather was as bright and cheerful as the Delhi weather was not. But the frigid and gloomy Delhi cold was more to his liking for it matched the emptiness within. Sighing deeply he looked at the chair on which she had sat on that day both their lives had unexpectedly intersected.

His eyes misted as he remembered her; a picture of purity, serenity…

A white virginal swan; so untouched so pure so fragile so precious....!

Her innocence, her complete trust in him and her manners and ways; a mixture, a cross between the devilish and angelic had oddly touched him and he realized somewhat belatedly that she had somehow succeeded in uncovering the real Jai Walia behind the mask of ruthlessness and raw power that he had so carefully cultivated as an answer to the shockingly untrustworthy and back stabbing world. And he had allowed her (Yes, he now acknowledged that), encouraged her to prod him in to dreaming dreams again and believing they would be realized one day and not be afraid they wouldn't……

And like a fool he had gone and dreamt a dream that he had no right to dream in the first place.

The dream broke…

He broke…

It was nobody's fault but his and yet he had gone and uttered all those ghastly things to that poor girl. The very thought about his behavior that night and he wanted to kill himself.

Maybe he ought to call her and apologize and explain.

Explain what? That he loved her? Loved the girl who trusted him unconditionally and who called him Uncle? Who was twenty years his junior? The girl whom he was supposed to protect?

A deep tormented sigh escaped him. There was no redemption in sight for him.

He buried his face in his hands.

Dear god! His condition was not unlike a rudderless ship quaking in the middle of a storm ridden sea.

********************

"Had that been a particularly vicious tornado?" Bani wondered long after he had left. That could not be her Jai uncle? Had she been having a nightmare?

"GET OUT! Out of my life! You have become an albatross around my neck… I cannot get rid of you soon enough. You are only my best friend's daughter. A liability! OUT! Leave me in PEACE! I beg you…"

Her brows puckered in disbelief. Those words had been no imagination. So finally the suppressed truth was out!

She supposed the normal reaction in such situations was to cry. She had seen many movies, read many romances. The heroine always cried her heart out in to her pillow when the hero threw back her idiotic heart to her.

Her lips lifted up in a smirk. Well she wouldn't cry because she didn't feel the pain. Not yet. She knew that today she would sleep a long peaceful sleep, after a long long time. Tomorrow maybe the numb pain that she knew lay hidden somewhere would show its true colors and after that…

Until then she would enjoy this blessed temporary numbing of her senses.

Yawning she dimmed the lights and dropped in to a deep slumber the moment her head hit the pillow.

Dear Diary,

I wish I could give Ranvijay a dear kick. I nearly did today. But I'm glad I didn't. He showed me there is hope yet…

"The more you run away from your problem, the more it chases after you!" Ranvijay pronounced philosophically" I really think your hiding from Bani is hardly doing you or her any good. And your behavior is…"he shook his head disapprovingly "Ever since you came here, you haven't uttered a single word. What's up?"

Jai stared steadfastly on the ground, stony faced.

"I'd much rather prefer that snooty and overbearing and the supercilious ass of my friend than this stranger who does nothing but brood and sulk."

"Thanks for the compliments" said Jai speaking for the first time, a sardonic smile on his lips.

His friend threw up his hands in exasperation "I don't get you. I thought you would be jumping up and down with happiness, hearing Tarun's scheme. But you just flatly refused to even consider it. Now come to think of it, what have you been playing at these five years Jai? The first year it was "Bani needs some time." The next year it was "Bani's studies should not be disturbed." And then it was one excuse after another. Now you say you cannot cheat Bani anymore. Fine! Then why have you stationed yourself here like a sloth? Why don't you tell Bani the truth? Jai, will you tell me what your true intentions are?"

I wish I knew. I wish I knew how to turn back the hands of the clock. I wish I knew how to…

"Jai I am asking you something. Just when are you going to tell Bani that she is married to you?" demanded Dr.Ranvijay Chopra, his beard shaking with fury" I mean man the whole world will know about it except her. Would that be fair to her?"

Jai Walia said nothing. He stood against the creaking gate, his arms folded and eyes closed.

JAI!" Dr Chopra shook him hard "When man? At this rate, we cannot keep the truth from her for long. Won't it be better that she learnt it from you than from somewhere else?"

The eyes opened with painstaking effort and he said tonelessly" I don't know how to tell her Vijay. Where do I start?"

"Right from the beginning Jai! The beginning is the right place to start."

Jai simply walked in to the house.

Ranvijay threw up his hands.

********************

It was well past noon when Bani woke up. Her eyes widened in horror as she glanced at her watch. How on earth had she overslept? Who would have packed Jai uncle's lunch? She must go and ask Kaki.

As she scrambled out of bed, she remembered last night.

"GET OUT! Out of my life! You have become an albatross around my neck…I cannot get rid of you soon enough. You are only my best friend's daughter. A liability! OUT! Leave me in PEACE! I beg you…"

"It hadn't happened." was her first thought.

Or had it? Had uncle actually asked her to get out of his house…out of his life?

In a flash she got up and fished out the album from the top shelf. She opened it to the page where he stood and slowly touched his picture with her forefinger.

For the first time, instead of any comfort or relief, Jai Walia's picture twisted her heart and left it writhing in inconsolable agony.

Why did he now feel so far away, like a stranger?

Her eyes dumb with pain, she stared at the picture…at him who had always felt like her own…No longer…

And then she cried.

********************

For Bani, the next few days passed in a haze.

If not Jai Walia, fate had at least blessed her with fever and cold which proved to be a great blessing in more than one way. For one it provided her with an excuse to remain in her room and escape Kaki's experienced eyes and razor sharp Raashi. For another the accompanying wretchedness and tiredness lulled her in to sleep and made no room for thoughts. But sleep was never a peaceful affair. Disjointed dreams that always included a pair of enchanting gray eyes and lips bearing a smile that scattered her wits that made perfect sense when she was dreaming them, but proved to be devoid of any meaning and made no sense and provided no direction when she woke up, added up to the feverishness and left her trembling in agitation.

The only thing that soothed her was Kaki's frequent visits to her room where she gently coaxed her to drink broths or soups or just sat holding her hands and pressing her head.

She vaguely recollected Billo Kaki telling her about Jai's phone call informing her of the urgent business trip that would keep him from the house for some time. Bani was very grateful for his absence. It gave her time to think, to come to terms with and accept the fact that to him, Bani swallowed her tears; she was, only a liability…a burden. To him she had always been his best friend's daughter. That's all. Bani's eyes filled up with self-contempt and anger at herself. What a fool she had been. How blind! All these years he had only been tolerating her, out of pity and out of obligation to his late friend and she had imagined nonsense and sure too that her nonsense will come true.

God how could a person be so blind?

"GET OUT! Out of my life! You have become an albatross around my neck…I cannot get rid of you soon enough. You are only my best friend's daughter. A liability! OUT! Leave me in PEACE! I beg you…"

"Yes Uncle, I will get out of your life and leave you in peace" Bani said aloud.

"Are you speaking to yourself?" Raashi enquired pushing open the door and laid a great heap of red roses on the night table.

Bani raised her eyes in question.

Raashi answered gaily "Baby you were sick so I didn't disturb you. Pushkar and I have arranged everything. Why are you frowning? Have you forgotten today is Valentine's Day and the party we had to organize together? No matter if Mr Walia is not here. We will think of something else. But at least we can enjoy ourselves today. Come on out and do tell how you like our humble arrangements?"

"RAASHI…Raashi? Where are the lights?"

Raashi grimaced "Pushkar cannot do one thing on his own. Bani dear the beautician will be coming home at four in the evening and the hairdresser and Alma too, with your new dress for the party. I may not be here. I need to go and collect the cake. So you have to…"

"RAASHI…Raashi!"

"I am COMING!" And grabbing the roses Raashi rushed down.

Bani sat in a daze. Why did people speak so quickly? What party was Raashi talking about?

Bani's eyes widened as she recalled the plan she had hatched up with Raashi. "Valentine's Day party…..." It seemed so far away far far away….she frowned in an effort to remember why she had planned it? It didn't matter. Nothing mattered anymore. She would wake up. Yes she would. It was high time actually. Then she would…get out…out of Jai uncle's house…out of his life...!

And then laying her head upon her arms she cried.

********************

Ranvijay studied his friend's harsh handsomeness and the pain that gilded his eyes. Refilling Jai's glass and his own, the doctor enquired softly "You love her. Don't you?"

The effect of his question startled even Ranvijay as Jai reacted with all the signs of a tortured soul and said shakily" Why would you want to know?"

His friend patted his thigh "Come on Jai. Pack up your bags. We are going to Delhi. I'll get everything arranged.

"B-b-but Vijay, I mean...I...I…"

"Jai you will not get a second chance again."

Jai looked distressed" Vijay you don't understand. There is no chance. I did something…"

"Jai!" said Ranvijay firmly "I know I am right. I know people. I understand them much better than they do. The moment I saw you two together I knew you were meant to be. And I have experience in such matters. I mix and match my friend and I have never been wrong! The other day a couple lovingly called me the Mumbai cupid and thanked me for my unasked services!"

And to Jai's amusement Ranvijay blushed, why his very beard seemed to blush.

In spite of the potential seriousness of his situation, Jai couldn't help but laugh as he imagined Ranvijay as Cupid, dressed in skimpy clothes and hiding behind trees, studiously hitting people with love arrows, all the while squinting with shot-sightedness.

"What's so funny?

"You!"

And then the import of Ranvijay's boastings hit him and with granitic eyes, he shook Ranvijay by his collar" You son of a b****! So all that fancy clause was an eye wash, a ploy to get Bani tied to me? O god! The torture that I have had to endure! Ranvijay you will pay for this. Like hell you will..."

Ranvijay only shook his head sadly "Jai I am disappointed in you. I thought you, who have known me for so many years would not insult my penchant for the melodrama by underestimating it!"

Jai screwed his eyes and glared at him doubtfully.

"Come on Jai. Much as I always wanted you two to make a match of it, I never interfered with what fate has so obviously intended. I allowed things to happen in their own good time. Moreover, if all this had been my doing, as you seem to think, do you think my methods would have been so drab and pragmatic?"

Jai's lips twisted in to a grudging smile "My apologies!"

"Accepted! Now get started."

"But do you think Bani will understand?" Jai asked worriedly.

"Yes" answered his friend firmly.

********************

Bani had tried everything, bad health, bad mood but no excuse had worked with Raashi.

"Bani the party will not be called off and you will not be allowed to escape especially after how Pushkar and I have sweated over it!" she had pronounced.

She acceding defeat, thinking one more day of torture will not matter and obediently presented herself to the hairdresser, her designer and the make-up woman. She hardly noticed what they were doing to her. She simply allowed the dull pain to thud through her brain and gnaw at her heart, intensifying the fog of despair that surrounded it, masochist that she wanted to be.

All of a sudden she noticed Alma, her dressmaker, comparing several maang tikas "Alma? Will you be making me wear this Indian dress and jewellery for a Valentine's party?"

Alma turned her around and answered impatiently" Yes dear. Raashi told me the theme for your party is 'Vivah' and that I was to dress you up as a dulhan. Now quickly wear this and Veera will take care of your hair. Hurry up child. The party will start shortly!"

The irony struck Bani like a cannon.

"O lord! She wished she could cry but the tears just wouldn't come. She felt so pulse less, with no energy left in her and no tears left either. Darkness and emptiness….closing upon her….sucking her breath…

And this is perhaps what Coleridge meant by "Death in life" she thought bitterly.

********************

"Behold" and Bani was turned towards the mirror.

She looked at the expectant faces and plastered a smile on her face "I do look nice. Thank you."

"Just nice?" Raashi pretended to faint "My dear you look breath taking!"

"Yes I rather do."

Maybe she did. She looked in the looking glass again. The heavy pomegranate red Ghaghra choli elegantly embellished with zardosi work and diamantes and a contrasting Dupatta, beautiful garnets in the form of jewellery…she did look rather nice…and they had actually managed to hide her pale sallow complexion behind an artificial rosy flush.

Nice.

"Bani you really looking breath-taking! All eyes will be on you."

Again the irony!

The person whose breath she wanted to take away was not here. The one person whose eyes she wanted on herself was not here. And even if he was here, he would remain unaffected. He didn't care

Abruptly she turned away from the mirror to hide her overflowing tears from her friends.

********************

Raashi and Pushkar had left no stone unturned to make the party one of its kind. And it was obvious from the compliments that were regularly flowing in. And Bani was the icing on their cake. Why would they have any complaints! Smiling they looked at Bani and a frown creased Raashi's brow "I'm sure something is terribly wrong with Bani."

Nonsense" said Pushkar"She is looking awesome! Now come and dance with me."

Raashi knew better but decided that she will have to speak to Bani later that night.

Bani had forced herself to mask her heartbreak behind a faade of cheerfulness and calm she did not feel and with as natural a smile as was in her power, she had sought to greet her guests, accept their compliments, make excuses for the absence of the master of the house and endeavor to make them feel at home. But half way through the strain of smiling and smiling and behaving normally when she all wanted to do was repair to her room and cry till her heart was sick, was taking a toll on her. Clutching her head, she looked around her. It was a blessing that Pushkar was allergic to electric lighting and had insisted that what ever light was required would be supplied by several thousand candles. The flickering candle light was so much more soothing than the garish glare of electric lights. People were now getting in to the mood and the dance floor was full of dewy eyed couples swirling to the beat of the romantic music. She looked at Raashi and Pushkar engaged in a passionate embrace.

How wonderful they look together, so much in love with each other. The dim lighting, the pink balloons, the pockets of red roses, this is the perfect setting for all lovers.

And as always when she saw them, when she saw any couple for that matter, she felt a twinge of jealousy.

How often had she dreamt herself safely ensconced in Jai Walia's arms, in similar settings, just the two of them…and dancing away to glory, staring in to his passion drenched eyes and that sexy smile on his lips…

Bani shook herself mentally. Nevermore will she allow herself to spin impossible dreams and distress herself. Nevermore!

Her heart like deadweight she moved surreptitiously towards a concealed side exit when she found Pushkar drag her to the dance floor and whisper urgently "Bani, smile! Look at me lovingly! Don't mind but I am hugging you"

Bani glared at Pushkar and looked askance at a beaming Raashi who was excitedly pointing towards something. Indeed the whole atmosphere seemed to have changed as there was a mild commotion and people seemed to be scrambling towards a particular spot. Totally at sea she wondered what had happened when the crowd parted as the sea would when a majestic ship cut across it and revealed him…

Bani held her breath for several seconds. Indeed the whole congregation seemed to be doing just that. Who wouldn't?

O my god!

The man who stood a few feet away from her was not her Jai uncle but Jai Walia; the man! He was definitely not the man in whose house she had spent five years, not the man whose clothes she washed, whose room she cleaned, not the man she called uncle….he had changed. Or was it her? Stupefied, she let her eyes roam all over him…the superbly tailored black suit (Was it made just for him?)…an open silk shirt (She could almost hear it rustling against his aroused skin sending a tiny tingle down her spine), his dark hair carelessly parted in the left side, three or four stray gray strands fallen on his brow (Lord why did that make him so utterly sexy?), the face the dear dear irresistibly handsome face (I wish I could go on looking at it, forever and forever and forever…), the delectable lips (So tasty!) and that (damn him!) slow sexy smile that sent her in to a delightful dizzy spell and those eyes that made her feel like she had no bones in her body and even if she did, the proprietorship was solely his…what was it about him today that he looked so different? Much much more desirable than usual? Even from such a distance, she could feel the sexuality that was radiating from him that threatened to sweep her off her feet…

For a minute their eyes locked and Bani felt her knees buckle.

"How dare he?" she thought angrily "How dare he throw me out of his life like...like…I was a piece of overstayed trash and now looking at me like..li...like I was dessert?" Well she wouldn't let him affect her anymore. She had learnt her lesson. She would move forward. She would enjoy herself "Pushkar there is no need of this playacting now."

"But Bani..?"

"Pushkar I want to dance with you because I want to and not to influence Jai uncle in anyway. Forget all that Raashi told you." And with a ferocity that surprised even her, she hugged back Pushkar and swirled down the dance floor.

A moment later she felt a tug at her arm "Bani! Whether you terminated our plan or not, it is working nevertheless!" said Pushkar gleefully "O No don't turn back! Just keep dancing. I'll take care."

She felt his presence even before he reached them and firmly pulled her away from Pushkar "Thank you Pushkar. But I don't particularly like the way you were handling Bani. Let me…"

Bani was not fooled by his lazy smile. She could see the hardness behind the pleasantness. And her heart leapt within her. Was her abandoned plan really working? Could she dare hope her dream would come true?

"GET OUT! Out of my life! You have become an albatross around my neck…I cannot get rid of you soon enough. You are only my best friend's daughter. A liability! OUT! Leave me in PEACE! I beg you…"

Not quite. She fought back her tears. She would never again dream impossible dreams. She wouldn't fool herself again. She wouldn't let him hurt her again. She would go out of his life forever…

"But I like the way he is handling me uncle!"

All pretence at a smile vanished and hard eyes like glint glared at her "Bani I insist you will not dance with Pushkar."

Everyone stopped doing what ever they were doing and stared. Bani felt herself flush to her roots but she looked up at Jai defiantly" And who are you to give me orders? I am not your servant!" and with that she took Pushkar's hand and walked away.

She had hardly taken half a pace when he caught her hand and pulled her to him and hissed in to her face" You will do as I please, you get it?"

Silence reigned as the two glared at each other and people looked on ghoulishly wondering who will win in this contest of wills.

Ignoring the warning in his eyes, Bani said softly but firmly "Uncle I said before, I will do what I please."

Though quivering from the inside Pushkar put a brave front and supported her statement "Yes Mr Walia. Bani will do what she pleases. What exactly is your problem? Who are you to stop Bani from dancing with me?"

Jai Walia lost his patience. He had hoped to catch Bani in private and tell her everything but had instead found a party going on and Bani (HIS WIFE GODDAMMIT!) in that chipmunk's arms!

There was only so much a man could bear. Five years of torture was more than enough. Grunting he caught hold of Pushkar and rammed his left fist in to his face and sent him crashing in to the live band. Raashi was immediately beside him and they two stared at Jai, half scared, half stunned, half elated that their plan was working.

Everyone looked on dazed, scared and thrilled by turns as Jai, his face distorted by anger, grappled a struggling Bani "You want to know who I am to instruct you? I AM YOUR HUSBAND GODDAMMIT! YOU ARE MY WIFE! And damn me if I let that chipmunk…"

The whole hall filled with an audible gasp and Jai realized his error as he saw the expression on Bani's face "Ba..Bani..I…"

Bani put a hand to her mouth in shock and even as Jai looked on, she staggered backwards and with a whimper, fell down on the ground, unconscious.

Dear Diary,

I deserve to rot in hell. That's all.

When Bani came to, her head felt like it had been pelted with a rock. Wincing she tried to get up but gentle hands pushed her down to the bed. She opened her eyes to find Jai's handsome face looming over her, all concerned and with such an expression in his eyes she had hoped she would find some day. She stared in to his magnificent eyes for some time, for the time being; content to just have him about her. Within a few seconds, she drifted off in to gentle slumber.

Slowly her head cleared and as the memory of the evening flew before her, she sat up straight and looked around her. The room was empty save her. Had she been dreaming Jai's presence?

Lord her head hurt so much. And what was that? What had he said at the party?

"I AM YOUR HUSBAND GODDAMMIT! YOU ARE MY WIFE!"

Bani scratched her head. What was that? How could it be possible? She had to find out. Even though the sensible thing was to go back to sleep, she had to get her facts right. She got out of the room, still woozy and clutching the banisters tightly for support, set to negotiate the stairs. As she looked down, she saw the deserted hall, the decorations intact. The lovely pink balloons, the floral arrangement, the fluttering candle light, silence and…Jai Walia!

He stood by the window, his side profile gilded by the moonlight. His hairs, fluttering in the gentle breeze, scattered across his forehead…that stern lower lip and the gentle upper lip grim with concentration…

Why did her heart stop every time she saw him?

Taking baby steps she walked down towards him until she was so close to him that if he turned back, he would collide in to her. And perversely she wanted him to.

And he did. Hurriedly she pushed herself out of his way.

"Bani? Are you alright?" he asked her in a voice filled with worry and concern.

No she was not. She wouldn't be until he told her everything." Uncle, what you said in the party…" Not sure how to go on, she stared at the ground.

"Jai you will not get a second chance again. Start from the beginning. Tell her everything. I am sure Bani will understand!"

Uncharacteristically at sea for the first time ever in his entire life, Jai felt caged and helpless. But he had to tell her…everything. It was not easy. There was so much to say. Dear lord! It was so difficult. Don't look at me that way Bani.

"Jai Uncle?"

He ran a nervous hand through his hair.

Bani waited patiently.

Fortifying himself Jai Walia said in a low voice "Yes…."

Bani wondered if she had heard right? It was so small a sound, so inaudible…Uncle what did you say?"

Jai turned abruptly towards the open window opened his collar button and sucked in a great lungful of air. That felt better.

Turning back, he blurted out "Yes Bani. We are married to each other for the last five years!"

Bani's eyes slowly widened, first with disbelief, then with shock and then progressing in to something he didn't understand. Was she angry? Hurt? Mad? But her face…Bloody hell, why is it so calm? Why doesn't she hit me? Do something Bani, punish me…

"How?" her eyes silently quizzed him "How Jai Uncle?"

Wringing his hands in desperation he bent his head "Bani…it was...I mean...I don't know how to…really Bani I…O damn! It's all due to that goddamn will your father made! Bani…"

Bani stood in silence as Jai narrated the events dating from the day they had entered each others' lives unceremoniously.

"Bani I never meant to cheat you. I was always going to tell you about our secret marriage but it always felt like the time was wrong that you were too young. And you were my best friend's daughter!"

Slowly she moved towards the window and then turned towards him, the moon shining behind her concealing her. In the place of her face were shadows preventing Jai from knowing just how exactly she was taking this. But he continued desperately"And I didn't know where to start. Tomorrow always seemed a better option and safer. I...was afraid that when you heard the truth out, you would leave me. I...Ranvijay thinks I married you out of compulsion but…"

Jai caught her hands (Damn! I wish I could see her face) "Bani I fell violently, desperately in love with you the moment I saw you in that day room of Nadir meet! I saw your face and I knew my life was incomplete without you. I just knew that this life without you would be like salt less food, water less sea. And I wanted you as my wife. I married you on the pretence that I was protecting you. But…the truth is I married you not out of nobility but because I desired you. But the fact always rankled in my mind that that you are Nishikant Dixit's daughter, my best friend's daughter who…who in all probability thought of me as her father's replacement, who respected me but nothing else. I was afraid to tell you the truth, afraid to ask you if you would remain my wife…because I was scared you would tell me that…that you always thought of me like your father…that day when I shouted at you, I heard the servants say just that and I lost my mind…I was not angry at you Bani, I was deathly scared that that was the truth and…and I couldn't bear even the thought of a life without you…I cannot live without you…Ranvijay said there was a way to finish this marriage...God knows that if this marriage got finished, I would be finished…I cannot live without you Bani…"

Jai bit his lips. He couldn't go on. He knew that if he uttered even one more word he would cry. Why isn't Bani saying anything?

An unsettling silence stretched between them.

After several agonizing seconds, Bani moved away from the window, away from the shadows and looked up at him.

Jai searched her face anxiously, for a hint of something anything...

Time was slipping away…

He had to convince her. No word would come out of him but he had to tell her how much he loved her…

And Jai fortified himself for the ultimate confession "I LOVE YOU BANI! There is nothing else in this world that matters more than your love, your presence. I want you by my side forever…as my…wife!"

Slowly Bani moved close to him and looked in to his eyes. Bani simply stared at what she saw, too enthralled to be capable of speech; the tears, the anguish and the pain without her, the intensity of his love for her, which she had always hoped she would see…

Bani stood speechless as she felt her heart would burst with happiness. Was she dreaming again? Was it real? Was it? He had always loved her, her dreams and her belief that that they weren't just dreams was not false...and he was actually her husband! Dear dear me so much happiness…how will I bear it?

Was it real? Was it? He had always loved her, her dreams and her belief that that they weren't just dreams was not false...and he was actually her husband! Dear dear me so much happiness…how will I bear it?

Her expressionless face and her silence were eating in to him. Dear god I have never yearned for anything as badly as I have for Bani's love. Please God please let her not leave me…

"Bani...Say something!"

"I will dear husband. You took five years to make your point. Shouldn't I be given at least half that time to make mine?"

Jai started. What had she said "Hus…"

Tears tumbled down her cheeks, she placed a small hand on his tear stained cheek and whispered "I have always loved you Jai uncle…every second of my conscious life, I have longed for you, for your love, every torturous second has been spent in waiting for your love and hoping….Uncle, I never considered you as my father's best friend..NEVER! You were always…my love and I was scared that if I told you how much I love you and you told me you that you had always considered me as only your best friend's daughter, I would just die! Jai uncle I had always hoped that one day some day you would tell me you have always loved me….

He stared at her astonished.

She continued, her voice shaking with emotion "I had given up all hope. I just cannot believe my dream has actually come true…"

They stood looking at each other, letting their tears fall on the ground unheeded. This was the moment that they had ached for. It had to be savored, revered…

Slowly their hands entwined and she smiled at him shyly.

Too overwhelmed to smile back, Jai pressed her hands tightly "I love you Bani!"

"O Jai uncle!"

Jai remained speechless as potpourri of emotions became him. His head was spinning and he felt himself giddy with happiness and impulsively he raised her above the ground till her face was directly opposite his and her arms were around his neck and then kissed her, like he had always wanted to, passionately ruthlessly, satisfying all the pent up hunger "Dammit you cannot imagine how much I have longed to do this! O my god Bani I love you so much…"

"I love you Jai uncle! I always have…"

And she reciprocated in kind, the way she had always wanted to…

Dear Diary,

It's been six years! And it seems it was only yesterday when I first saw her, basking in the morning sun, my glowing golden goddess! I never thought things would shape up this way. I am mighty glad they did!

Nishikant, Thank you!

And guess I ought to be grateful to the Mumbai cupid too! He is marvelous. But I'm never going to tell him that. As it is, he is already insufferable!

Jai Walia smiled to himself and with a satisfied sigh completed the day's entry.

Bani and I are really made for each other. Why I took five years to realize this is anybody's guess. A ban says it's due to old age! The little devil!

Our two beautiful children are my pride. They take right after their mother in everything.

I am a blessed man. I have everything. Thank you God. I have nothing more to ask for. I have no regrets except one. That my best friend's daughter still calls me uncle!

But one can't have everything, right?

"UNCLE! Dinner is served!"

"UNCLE! Didn't you hear mom? Come on fast Uncle. We are starving!"

See what I said? The children take after her in everything!

"Hold on. I am Coming!"

Some things never change. Hopefully they never will!

Entry No. 12 :

A Valentines Day Surprise...

It had been two years since Bani had arrived in Mumbai. Her decision to leave her hometown of Mount Abu had been difficult. She had spent her whole life there. Her mother had died 10 years prior, succumbing to pancreatic cancer and her father, whom she was very close to, had a difficult time coping with his wife's death turning to alcohol for comfort. He later passed as well. Unable to find a reason to stay in a small town that was a constant reminder of her parents, Bani took it upon herself to start afresh. She had no brothers or sisters, nor did she have uncles or aunts, so it made it easier moving to a new city.

As fate would have it, she took up a job in one of Mumbai's top most companies, the Walia Group of Industries, and soon caught the eye of Mr. Jai Walia himself, the owner of WGI. He was slightly older than her, but quite handsome. He had a devilishly handsome smile and expressive chocolate brown eyes that she fell for the moment she looked into them. Working together closely on several projects gave them the opportunity to become closer friends, and before they knew it they had fallen for one another.

But, it wasn't his looks that drew her to him. It was his love for his family that touched her the most. Although his mother had passed many years ago, his aunt, whom he loved and respected more than anything in this world, raised him. His sister, brother in law, nephews, Ranveer and Sahil and their wives, Raashi and Rano lived their household as well. They all were well settled in their lives, and Jai was the only one who had not found his soul mate until he met Bani.

They had dated for quite a while quietly and as the days passed they fell deeper in love with each other. Once the rest of the WGI employees caught wind of their relationship, the rumor mills began to grind out stories and Bani soon became quite uncomfortable, as all eyes were on her, both in the office and in the media. Together, Jai and Bani decided that for her sake it was better that they had better stop working together.
Before she knew it, they were engaged. Masi and the family were elated for them and their happiness could hardly be contained. The family insisted that since she and Jai were going to be married, it would be better that she move into the Walia Mansion especially since she lived on her own and no longer was working. Bani tried hard to convince them that she was fine living on her own, but Masi was able to persuade her successfully. In fact, she would not let her reside in the guesthouse even, and wanted her in the main house with the rest of the family.

It was now four months since their engagement, and Bani was still settling into the Walia Mansion. Since their engagement, Jai had become increasingly busy and had taken up more projects than he could handle.

February 11

"Bani beta, when is Jai coming back from his business trip?" Masi pondered. "It seems that he has been rather business lately." Masi sat down next to Bani who was drinking a cup of tea on the veranda.

"Actually Masi, he should be back from Goa in a tonight, but soon after he has to leave again and head to Pune for a few days," Bani said grimly. "As it is, I have hardly heard from him over the past week." Bani twisted the engagement ring around her finger, then glanced at Masi who was watching her intently.

"Bani, I know its hard when Jai goes out of town for long periods of time, but you know he loves you more than anything. I have never seen him look at anyone the way he looks at you." Masi smiled at her.

Bani blushed at this. "I know.. he loves me. Its just that…" Bani hesitated to continue, but she knew Masi wouldn't let her go mid-sentence. "Its just that he hasn't really mentioned our wedding ever since we got engaged. And on top of that, lately he seems gets irritated when I mention it, even."

Masi looked at Bani nervously. "Bani, I am sure its nothing to worry about. You shouldn't stress yourself over it, I am sure he is just busy." Masi gave her a halfhearted smile. She uneasily avoided Bani's gaze. "Speaking of which, Bani, my good friends daughter, Anu, is getting married in a couple of days and she has invited us for the wedding. She has specially requested that the future daughter in law of the Walia Khandan be attendance. The sangeet is tomorrow, then the mehndi and then the wedding itself. Will you be able to go with us?" Masi asked quickly changing the subject.

Bani looked at Masi carefully unable to judge her reaction. She couldn't figure out why Masi and Jai would both avoid the subject of their wedding so apprehensively. She gave a forced smile to Masi. "Yes Masi, I will be able to go." Masi nodded and left Bani to her own. Bani pondered on Masi's reaction. Coming to the conclusion that it was just her imagination that Masi tried deliberately to change the subject, she continued to drink her tea.

Later that night, Bani was putting clothes away in her cupboard. Hearing familiar footsteps coming her direction, she didn't even need to turn around to see who it was. She could sense his presence behind her. Turning around she smiled. "Hi…" She said barely above a whisper.

"Hi…" He took her hands into his own and pulled her in closer to him till they were within centimeters of each other and smiled. "Miss me?" He gave her a seductive smile and wrapped his arms around her. He held her tight enough that she could feel his heart beat and the low trembling from his voice.

"No. I didn't miss you at all. Masi was here with me, as was the rest of the family.. so why would I miss you?" Bani teased him. She bit her lip and smiled. He loosed his grip and looked at her. She pulled him in by his collar and smiled. "Jai… It can never happen that you go away from me and I don't miss you."

"I know.." Jai leaned in and kissed her gently, making Bani feel week in the knees. He kept his hand on the small of her back, pulling her in closer to him. "How was your week?"

"It was fine…" She looked down for a second, then looked back up at him, contemplating whether she should go on. Taking a deep breath, she proceeded. "Jai, I've been meaning to ask you…umm…about our wedding. Its been four months since we've been engaged and we haven't discussed any wedding plans- .." Bani said glancing at her engagement ring once again. Suddenly, Jai let her go. "What happened?" Bani inquired.

"No, its nothing. Look Bani, more than anything in this world, I want to marry you. But I just don't have the time right now. I'm already leaving for Pune in two days and after that I have another trip planned to Chennai, soon after that. Once those deals are settled, I promise you we will discuss the wedding in detail. Right now.. I just can't!" Jai said rather defensively.

Bani's eyes welled up with tears. She couldn't understand why he would stall their wedding, after all he was the first one to even mention marriage in the first place. Conceding in her efforts, she nodded with tears streaking her face. "Im sorry.. I know you are busy…". Bani said bleakly. Jai looked at her, feeling guilty.

He cupped her face gently and wiped her tears with his thumb, caressing her cheeks delicately. "Sorry Bani… I shouldn't have snapped at you. Please don't cry, Bani. I promised myself that I would never bring sadness in your life… Forgive me?" Jai looked at her directly in her eyes. His eyes were filled with a helplessness, which touched a nerve directly in Bani's heart. She nodded in acknowledgement and he pulled her in for a long, comforting embrace, but her mind was filled with the questions of what could be holding him back.

February 12

The next night Bani stood in front of her dresser wearing a lavender lengha, putting on the last of her jewelry. As she made sure she had everything she needed, Jai came behind her and put two hands on her shoulder and moved his hands down her arms, intertwining his fingers with hers. It sent shivers down her spine. He moved her hands and his arms so they were holding her around her waist. "You look amazing." He leaned in so his cheek was against hers.

"You aren't coming with us?" Bani said sadly. She had not seen much of him lately and she had hoped that he would arrange his schedule so that he could include at least one of the wedding functions.

"No I have to head to the office. I have a lot of work to do since I have to leave for Pune tomorrow night. I actually wanted to attend this wedding. Aunty is a good friend of Masi, and I grew up with her daughter, Anu. I hate to miss her wedding."

Bani looked at him and nodded. She could tell he regretted having to work all the time, but she knew it came with the territory of owning so many different companies. Jai kissed her cheek, moved her hair aside then planted a kiss on her neck. Hating to break up their moment, she knew she had no choice.

"Im running late.. Masi is waiting for me downstairs…" She tried to let go, but Jai wasn't loosening his grip. She looked at him and he had a mischievous smile on his face. His hands were tightly woven around her waist and she couldn't break apart his hands. She laughed but struggled to get out of his grip. "Jai.. come on.. let me go! Masi's going to be wondering what is taking me so long!"

He loosened his hands and she turned around and pecked him lightly on the cheek. He smiled at her and she rushed down the stairs. Looking up at the top floor, she saw him standing there smiling as she and Masi left for the sangeet. She waved a quick goodbye and they were off.

Masi and Bani arrived at the sangeet, and she was introduced to Anu. Masi left to talk to a few of her old friends while Anu pulled her down to sit with her and her friends.

"Bani,I hear you are getting married to Jai? I cant believe he is FINALLY settling down! I couldn't believe my ears when I heard that Jai popped the question to you!" Anu sounded truly excited. "Seriously Bani, I couldn't be more happier for you."

Bani smiled. Her mind wandered to back to Jai's proposal. He wanted to propose to her like a normal guy, not a business tycoon, so he made sure that there was nothing too extravagant or over the top. In fact, she came home one day to find her house decorated in dozens of light pink balloons. In the midst of the balloons, Jai emerged with a smile, taking her by the hands further into the house and sitting her down so she could relax. He proceeded to cook her dinner taking her by surprise. But what was more of a shock were his impeccable culinary skills. That night, in front of a candlelight dinner, he got down on one knee and asked her to make him the happiest man in the world by becoming his wife. With tears in her eyes she accepted his proposal without any hesitation. Bani's train of thought was interrupted by a familiar voice. She looked to her left to see Masi happily chatting with one of he friends.

"So when is your nephew, Jai, finally tying the knot? We read in the paper months ago that he was engaged to be married, and he still hasn't gone through with it?" Masi glanced out of the corner of her eye, noticing that Bani was watching. Anxiously, she turned to her friend and smiled. "He will, not to worry. Have you seen Anu? She is just beautiful! Absolutely radiant!"

Bani's eyes began to sting. Once again Masi had changed the subject and she couldn't figure out what Masi was hiding. Why would Masi not give her the reason why Jai was stalling for the wedding? What could he be hiding? Bani looked on as Rano and Raashi were dancing and having a good time. She wiped the tears that had just begun to fall down her face, hoping that nobody would notice them. Rano looked at her and immediately pulled her up to dance, and after much resistance she herself gave in.

February 13

The next morning Bani, sat against the window pondering on the night before. Her mind kept wandering to Masi changing the subject time and time again. Picking up her now lukewarm cup of tea, she held on to the mug firmly with both her hands. She could not figure out why Jai, who was so eager to get married in the first place, could be stalling so much. She knew that he had taken on a lot of work. Jai hated to take breaks between projects, leaving them incomplete. Bani contemplated on whether her marriage would remain incomplete as well. Bani deliberated for a while and came to the conclusion that no matter how long he took, she would wait. Jai resided in her heart and soul and without him her life was incomplete. If she had to wait, she would.. as long as she got to be with Jai for the rest of her life, that was all that mattered to her.

Later that evening Bani, Masi, Rano and Raashi were at Anu's mehndi ceremony. The girls were happily chatting about Anu's wedding the next day. Even Bani had forgotten about her worries until Anu herself brought it up. "Bani, so have you and Jai decided when your wedding is?" Bani was speechless. She shook her head silently, and glanced at Rano and Raashi. They looked at one another with nervous glances, then quickly made excuses and left the group of girls.

Bani approached them, knowing that she had to get these questions off of her chest. "Rano, Raashi.. does Jai have cold feet? Does he not want to get married?"

They looked at her, and then at each other, even more apprehensively than when Anu had asked Bani. Rano decided to answer, "No Mamiji.. its nothing like that.. you really have nothing to worry about. Raashi, are you thirsty? Im going to get something to drink. Mamiji, why don't you sit down, we'll bring you something to drink." She grabbed Raashi's arm and the hurried off.

Bani looked on as they walked away, feeling as if someone had ripped her heart out. Rano and Raashi, also knew the reason behind Jai's hesitation to get married. Not wanting to cry in front of all the girls, Bani forced a smiled upon her face and sat back down, and half heartedly admired Anu's mehndi.

"Bani, why don't you put mehndi on your hands?" Anu insisted. Her mehndi was done and was beginning to dry. Bani looked at her with a half smile and shook her head. Rano and Raashi returned, sitting next to Bani, also insisting that she put mehndi on her hands.

"Mamiji, please have your mehndi done. You are engaged to be married too. And Anu is insisting! You should put it on your hands! You cant say 'no' to the bride to be!" Raashi chimed in. She grabbed Bani's hands, extended them forward. All the girls began insisting that Bani should have mehndi too. Anu smiled at her and nodded. Bani reluctantly conceded and kept her hands extended to the aunties who were applying the mehndi to her. All the girls around her began to sing:

Mehndi hai rachne wali

Haathon mein gehri lali

Kahe sakhiyan, ab kaliyan

Haathon mein khilne wali hain

Tere mann ko, jeevan ko

Nayi khushiyaan milne wali hain

From across the room, Masi looked at Bani, seeing that bit of sadness in her eyes, but a smile pasted on her face. It broke her heart to see Bani in such a state. She cursed herself, knowing the reason behind Bani's sorrow. She considered the young girl to be more than just her daughter in law. She hoped that soon that frown would turn into a smile.

They returned home late that night, and Bani checked Jai's room only to see that he hate not yet returned. Knowing that he would return home soon and catch the red-eye flight to Pune, she decided to wait up for him. He usually checked in on her if he returned home late night, making sure she was safe at home. She sat down on the bed, still in the clothes that she had worn to the mehndi ceremony. She stared into her hands, covered in mehndi. On one hand, they had written 'Jai' and on the other 'Bani'. Tears began to form in her eyes as she stared at the intricate designs that now covered her hands. Wishing that she was in Anu's place tonight, she continued to stare into her hands, when she heard a familiar voice behind her.

"You know, they say the darker the color of the mehndi, the more your husband will love you." Jai said standing in the doorway. He looked tired, with the top two buttons of his collared shirt open, and his hair slightly disheveled. He approached her and she quickly wiped the tears from her eyes. He knelt down next to her as she sat on the bed with her hands resting lightly in her lap. "Whats this? They wrote 'Jai'? Now the color will be extremely dark, and everyone will be able to see just how much I love you"

Bani smiled at him, she wanted so bad to caress his cheek, but with the mehndi on her hands she did not want to streak his face. "Actually, they say that the darker the color, the more your mother in law will love you.. which one should I believe?" She said playfully.

"Do you want me to show you how much I love you?" Jai held on to her wrists, knowing that she was powerless. She struggled to get out her hands out, but she did not want to ruin the mehndi on her hands.

"What are you doing?" She giggled and slid backwards further on the bed, as Jai leaned in with a seductive smile plastered on his face. He kissed her softly at first, then again more passionately. Bani gave into him, and stopped struggling to get out of his grip. He gently let go of her wrists and moved away from her lips, slowly heading towards her neck. "Mr. Walia, it's called self-control," she pleaded. Choosing to ignore her plea, he continued to explore her.

She wrapped her arms around his neck, careful not to let her hands touch his suit. She took in the scent of his aftershave, which smelled so sexy. His hands slid up her back, attempting to untie the dori of her blouse, and Bani unable to stop him.

Jai and Bani were both caught up in the moment, when they were both suddenly interrupted. "Jai?! Where are you? You're getting late for your flight!" Aditya's voice called out from downstairs.

Jai froze for a moment, looked towards the door and groaned with frustration. "Damn. What timing. Remind me to teach Aditya a couple lessons about timing." Apologetically, he looked at Bani, who's amused look turned into laughter.

"So much for your self-control," Bani giggled.

A small smile grew on Jai's face and he glanced at his watch realizing that he was running late for the airport. "I have to leave. I'll call you when I get there." He gave her a light kiss and look directly into her eyes. "I promise you, that when I return, we will start planning the wedding- even before I leave for Chennai. How does that sound?"

Bani looked at him surprised. She quietly nodded, giving him a warm smile. He kissed her again on the forehead and headed towards the door. In the middle of the doorway, he stopped and looked back at her. "Hey Bani?" She looked up at him curiously. "I love you…" With that, he smiled and ran down the stairs and out the door for the airport.

February 14

Bright and early the next morning, Bani woke up to her alarm. Her hand automatically headed towards the alarm hitting the snooze button rather forcefully. She stretched her arms over her head and gazed out the window watching the beautiful sunrise. Throwing the covers off of the bed, she glanced at her hands surprised at the darkness of her mehndi. With a smile on her face, she got out of bed and got ready for the day.

Bani walked down the stairs later that evening wearing a deep green sari. Masi smiled at her as she walked down the stairs. "You look beautiful, Bani. Simply radiant, and just look at your mehndi! Its so dark! I knew that my Munna loves you a lot," Masi said making Bani blush. "This should be a beautiful wedding, after all it is Valentines Day!"

Bani looked up at hearing that. It had slipped her mind on what date it was. She thought for a moment and realized that Jai had not even called her to wish her a happy Valentines Day. Knowing that he was busy with meetings, she understood that he may not have had time to call her or that it slipped his mind, but it still bothered her a little bit. Pushing her worries aside, she smiled and they were off to the wedding.

The Walia family arrived at the wedding exactly on time. Bani looked up at the house when she get of the car, admiring the thousands of lights that adorned the house. Inside, it was filled with beautiful red roses in every corner. The house itself looked like a new bride. As Bani entered the household, she felt as if all the eyes in the room fell on to her. She was used to being in the media more often now, but for some reason tonight it had a different feeling. It wasn't the paparazzi that was trying to get a glimpse of the soon to be Mrs. Jai Walia, but it was people that seemed familiar to her that were watching her. Masi came behind her with Rano and Raashi, and together they went upstairs to see Anu in her room and help bring her down to the mandap.

Upstairs, Rano and Raashi were interrupted by a mutal friend and decided to catch up to Bani and Masi after a few minutes. Even Masi was stopped before entering Anu's room. She urged Bani to go on as she would soon join her. Bani agreed and knocked on the door. There was no answer. She slowly opened the door and peered through not seeing anybody in the room.

As she walked in further she looked in the bed. There was a beautiful deep red wedding outfit, neatly laid out on the bed. Right next to it were several red jewelry boxes. She looked left and right, but the room seemed to be empty.

"Anu? Are you here?" Receiving no answer, she headed towards the bathroom and knocked on the door. Again there was no answer. She headed to the bed and admired the beautiful outfit that was lying there, tracing the intricate work with her fingers, when her eye caught sight of a card that looked every similar to a wedding card. From what she could tell, it looked like her name was written neatly on the front. She picked up the card and realized that she was right- it was her name. Carefully, she removed the card out of the envelope, and opened it. A little note fell from the card to the ground, and as she bent over to pick it up, the contents of the card caught her eye:

You are cordially invited to the wedding of

Ms. Bani Dixit

And

Mr. Jai Walia

February 14, 2007

Valentines Day

She read the card over and over again, unable to comprehend what she was reading. Opening up the note that fell out of the card, she was hoping to search for an answer.

'My Dearest Bani. I hope you liked my surprise. I have been planning this for months now and I really hope that you aren't disappointed. Today is Valentines Day, and I chose this day to get married for three reasons. First, Valentines Day is symbolic of undying love, which I have for you. Second, when we decided to get married, it turned out that Valentines Day was the most auspicious for us, as told to me by the Panditji. And Third, and to me the most important- Valentines Day was the first time I ever laid eyes on you, and at that very moment I knew in my heart that it was you that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. I love you, and I can not wait for you to become my wife. Love you, Jai'

Bani hugged he letter, unable to express her joy. Her eyes flowed with tears of happiness. She turned around to see Masi standing there with tears in her eyes and a huge smile on her face. Masi walked further into the room, with Rano and Raashi following closely behind, both grinning like fools.

"I'm sorry, Bani. I couldn't tell you what Munna was planning this whole time. He swore me to secrecy…" Masi kissed Bani on the forehead and gave her a much needed hug. "Jai planned the whole thing- including Anu's sangeet and mehndi functions. He made them up on purpose so that you wouldn't miss out on attending any functions, most importantly the mehndi function. That's why these girls insisted that you have your mehndi done!" Bani looked at Rano and Raashi who both nodded and laughed. Bani was in disbelief that Jai would go to such lengths to surprise her. She felt like she was the luckiest girl in the world.

"Ok, Bani… enough crying and enough waiting!" Masi wiped her own tears. "Today is your wedding day, and Jai is waiting for you!" Masi urged Bani to get ready. A short while later, Bani looked at herself once more in the mirror. She was dressed in the outfit that Jai had picked out for her, which fit and looked perfect on her. Masi slipped two gold kangan on her delicate wrists as shagun, and Bani touched her feet for her blessings.

"May you have a long and happy married life," Masi said blessing her and giving her a kiss on the forehead. "Are you ready, Bani?" Bani nodded and together they all walked out of the room.

Bani walked down the stairs of the house, with Masi, Rano and Raashi next to her, and followed by a group of girls. Bani paused at the bottom of the stair case to see Jai standing there, waiting for her in the mandap. He looked handsome in an off white sherwani, and a dark red scarf. He looked devastatingly handsome, and his eyes lit up when he saw her standing there in her bridal outfit. He stared at her in awe, mesmerized by her beauty. Sahil and Ranveer came up behind him, and broke him out of his trance.

"Mamaji.. You might want to take a breath, otherwise you'll collapse." Sahil said jokingly. Ranveer laughed with Sahil, and Jai took a deep breath as Bani walked towards him. Bani looked into Jai's eyes, which were filled with tears, and the whole room cheered as they placed garlands around each others necks.

The wedding rituals went off without a hitch, and even the reception afterwards was an extravagant affair. Bani felt as if she was in a dream land, and she was still in disbelief that she was now married to Jai, when it was just yesterday that there was no wedding in sight. She spent most of the night by his side, greeting their guests, thanking them for sharing this happy occasion with them.

Jai tried to steal her away to have a private moment the whole night, but they were constantly interrupted. When most the guests had met them, Jai finally stole a moment with Bani on the dance floor. Not paying attention to their surroundings, Jai and Bani stared into each others eyes. They were so deep in concentration that they didn't even realize that the song had ended. Jai gently kissed her on the forehead and the whole room was filled with claps and whistles. Bani turned beet red, as did Jai, and they laughed as they realized the whole room was focused on the two of them. They rushed off of the dance floor back to the family.

By the end of the night, the whole family was exhausted. After giving Bani the proper send off, Jai and Bani headed to their beach cottage for their wedding night. Jai carried Bani in his arms, staring directly into her eyes the whole time, and she had her arms securely around his neck. As they entered the cottage, the lights were off, but there it was illuminated by dozens of candles. Jai carried Bani towards the bedroom and gently set her down on the bed that was covered in fresh rose petals.

"Jai, thank you for the beautiful surprise. I cant believe you planned all of this, all on Valentines Day. It was the best Valentines gift ever…"

"You are very welcome, Mrs. Walia. Anything for you. Now you are eternally my Valentine. I told you.. I couldn't wait for you to become my wife.. so why not on the most romantic day of the year…" Jai said softly. He kissed the palms of her hands, and slowly began taking her bangles off. She looked at him coyly, as he kissed her after removing each piece of jewelry. He leaned into her and kissed her soft lips with a gentle passion. He looked at her and traced his finger down her arm, sending shivers down her spine. "I cant wait to start our lives together… You, me, Krishna…"

"Krishna?" Bani looked at him confused.

"Our daughter…" Jai said with a hopeful smile. His eyes had a slight twinkle in them, emitting his happiness.

"Daughter? Umm.. Jai.. Im not-.." Bani was stopped by Jai putting a finger over her lips.

"Sssh.. I know... but you will be.." Jai said tenderly. He looked deep into her eyes, and she could see the intensity of his love for her. He pulled her into an embrace……

And with that two souls became one.

Entry No. 13:

Will You Be My….Once More

**WILL**

14th February. The city has already witnessed the sunrise an hour ago. All those who were still stealing some sleep; most of them were actually making up for the tiresome yet lovely day ahead. As the birds flew and chirped around and the newspapers with special supplement on V-day reached their destinations within time, one finds a couple busy……….arguing!

As Jay saw the door opening he screamed, "Bani! Can't you wait for a while? I'm changing my shirt." The door flew open instantly and a sweet voice filled the room although the person was not into the room completely. Concentrating in balancing herself with the pile of clothes in her hand Bani said, "If you feel so shy to change your shirt in front of your wife then why not lock the door before changing?" Now her eyes fell on her sweet husband whose face reflected guilt. Bani dumped the clothes on the table beside the door and silently observed her husband. Jay the poor man seemed to run out of excuses. But excuses for what? Bani broke the silence with a tone of disappointment, "So what do you think? Today you went out for jogging wearing this T-shirt instead of the one you kept aside yesterday to wear today. Now who is going to wash this extra item? I guess you be prepared." Jay sensed that his wife was actually not angry with him but yes a little disappointed. He carelessly began, "Bani come on, no one is perfect in this world you know that. I forgot about the shirt but its ok I will manage. You see…." Bani interrupted, "Mr. Jay Walia don't you think that your imperfections are showing up at an abnormal rate after your retirement?" pointing on the clothes placed on the table she continued, "Look at these clothes. The wind filled them with dust and it was you who went to the balcony at the dead of night to smoke and at the end forgot to shut the door behind." Jay quickened to defend himself, "Bani I didn't smoke. Believe me…….." a teasing smile flickered on Bani's lips as she replied, "believe you? I would love to but when it comes to my 28 years of experience of living with you I simply can't believe you when it comes to you and your smoking." The 58 years old man had nothing to say. He just wished under his breath so that the matter doesn't get dragged. He wondered how his 53 years old wife managed to handle issues with him in such a manner. He noticed her mouth opening once more and he knew that this was going to be hard but thanks to Krishna who was unstoppably calling her mother.

Jay was free again. Only a single week has passed after Jay's retirement and actually this only helped in inviting lots more trouble at home. Not that he couldn't have continued on contract basis in the company he worked for so many years, but he thought to have some rest (that caused unrest actually!). Right from buying groceries to settling laundry bills he used to participate actively since then. But that only helped in creating more troubles for Bani who had wonderfully balanced her job and home and two kids – Krishna and her hubby Jay single handedly for so many years. Jay was going through the Valentine's Day messages in the newspaper. Krishna hurriedly went to her father, gave him a hug and reminded him that she will be returning home the next day. Jay tried to recall the reason and yes finally he remembered that Krishna was supposed to attend a late night Valentine's Day party in her best friend's house. Before leaving Krishna whispered in his ears, "papa, ma seems to be quite angry with you today. She is not much impressed by the fact that yesterday you bought so many kinds of vegetables. I saw her fuming in the kitchen. Come on today is Valentine's Day. Don't make her angry." With these words Krishna made her way towards the garage. Jay looked at this 25 years old girl who resembled her mother the most, always leaving Jay in a hunt to find some striking resemblance with him too. He worriedly went to the kitchen and tried to lighten Bani's mood. But the reverse happened; credit goes to Jay Walia of course. He had mockingly said to Bani that there was someone whose thoughts preoccupy Jay's mind leading to all the mistakes. This was the one thing that used to hurt Bani the most, although Jay never knew that. For all these years she never used to get very much angry with him but whenever Jay used to mention that there is someone else in his life although jokingly, she simply couldn't withstand those words. Bani finished her cooking, got ready for office and the anger/pain in her heart didn't tend to stop. Jay saw her going but without bidding good bye to him. He suddenly asked, "Bani where are you going?" Bani, who was quiet till that time burst in anger, "I am going to commit suicide." Jay once again asked, "where?" this was the limit. Bani took her seat in the car and said, "as if you care." Jay was now all alone in the house for the coming hours and on seeing Bani leaving that way, his heart ached. He knew he was in total mess!

**YOU**

After finishing his bath, breakfast and everything else he used to do in the morning nowadays Jay switched on the TV. He continued surfing the channels but none could catch his attention. He really felt bad for Bani. Was he really creating troubles for her? The question worried him. But he never wanted to trouble Bani, it's just that he did things in his own way. May be his ways didn't fit well in running a family. What he could do, he thought. Bani managed things so well all these years that may be he was intruding in her management system only to remain occupied with some work. He wondered how at work he used to think of doing this and that after retirement. But see in only a week he was in troubled waters. All ideas lost with the loss of interest and gain of somewhat unwillingness. He switched off the TV and went to his room. He saw a picture of Bani hanging on the wall. He went in front of the picture and tried to recall the events when the picture was taken. Memories flew back. They went 28 years back.

14th February was the day. Jay was in a party. The party was just for fun sake. A new trend of celebrating Valentine's Day had just arrived in the then youngster's culture. Jay was looking for one of his friends when he brushed past a girl. He turned back to a have a look and there was the girl Bani. He knew her but not this aspect of her. Bani put a gentle smile on her face and raised an eyebrow questioning what he was doing there. He smiled a bit and said, "Hi Bani you are also here. What a coincidence we are meeting after 7 months! By the way how are you doing." Bani walked with him to the sitting place and replied, "I am fine. Hope you are also well. Oh I shouldn't ask it but tell me are you here with your fianc?" Jay laughed at her question and said, "What made you believe that I've got engaged. It was just for the interests of my parents that I went to your house to see you. I was never into arranged marriage." Bani supported him, "Me too. Arrange marriage. No not done. But yes it was nice meeting you. I guess we would have met like this for the first time. In a romantic night on a romantic day like this then our story would have been different. May be, may be not. But one thing is for sure the kind of awkwardness we are feeling right now that would not have been there." Jay was listening to her silently and wondered was she the same girl he met 7 months back clad with traditional Indian outfit, feeling so shy and uneasy with him and his family. He remembered even he was not into it. They were supposed to decide on their marriage without any basis – neither love nor friendship nothing. Horrible situation it was! He looked into Bani's eyes and found them waiting for him to add something to whatever she said. He said, "Really we should have met like this only. Who knows how things would have turned up." Bani excused herself as her friends were calling her. She sat beside some girls, a few meters away from Jay. Jay stared at her and watched her each action carefully. He liked her. A small smile appeared on his face as he continued staring at her. He didn't know what but definitely something made him continue with his staring. She looked back only to find his eyes on her. She turned quickly then hesitantly again looked back. He was not there. She was all confused and then decided not to think about it, may be it was the way they met after their so called first meeting that made her feel different for him. Jay was surrounded by friends and everybody pointed to this and that girl, whom they would wish to make their valentine. Jay thought for a while when his turn came to answer. He went straight to where Bani was sitting. He offered his hand to her and asked, "Bani will you be my valentine?" Bani was shocked as well as surprised. She looked into his eyes and stood speechless. The constant noise made by Bani's friends diverted her attention. They had already indulged in voting whether she should say yes or no. Bani murmured, "But Jay…." Jay interrupted, "I am asking you again, will you be my valentine?" Bani unknowingly slipped her hand in his hand and gave a shy smile. It was a moment of shock for Jay's friends and also for Bani's friends. The couple danced for almost half an hour without uttering a single word. They knew about each other's interests, achievements, families and many more, what they didn't know was each other. Bani began, "how much serious are you with this one? Was it the fact that you knew only me among all other girls so you ended up enjoying the time with me?" Jay replied, "Firstly I am as much serious as you are and secondly I wanted to start afresh with you so that we can make our own story." He winked.

They really had a good time together and in fact that was the beginning of more and more meetings when finally they ended up marrying each other. He took the picture just a day after their marriage. Her long silky black hairs, her innocent smile and her sweet face everything in the picture made him feel like the 30 years old Jay Walia.

**BE**

He decided to give her a surprise. A Valentine's Day surprise. As Krishna won't be at home he had no problems to make it a romantic event. He busied himself with filling air in the balloons. One, two, three,…………….nine. No he thought to blow the rest later. He needed to make the lighting arrangements. He took out all the lightings they use at Diwali. This corner to that corner, diagonally, straight, zigzag and so many patterns he drew out of those numerous lighting sets. Actually he used all the lightings. Now was the turn for food. He ordered certain food items, chocolates and the rest he prepared to cook. Yes he knew cooking but the only fact is that he was not much acquainted with his own, no Bani's kitchen. Finally he prepared some of the dishes which both of them liked. He was tired, so he went for a nap. After he woke up he realized that he did not make any flower arrangements. He called a florist and finished that part of the job too. Balloons oh yes now the rest of the balloons were to be blown. Ten, eleven,………..hundred. He looked at the room and yes he was victorious. It was already 6 o'clock. Bani will be coming by 7 o'clock he knew. So he went to freshen up and after rummaging his wardrobe he finally managed to take that shirt out. Which shirt? Oh that one which he wore 28 years back on V-day. He still owns the shirt? Thanks to Bani! He didn't use to wear the shirt as he put on some weight that time but now he guessed the shirt would fit him. In fact it did. He combed his hair, and tried to hide some of those white or grey hairs in the jungle of black hairs which thankfully still occupied his head. Yes everything was set only his valentine needed to arrive. He went downstairs and arranged all the pink balloons on the floor, sofa, table, showcase everywhere where he could place them. He wished to see how the lighting looks like. So he switched off the tube light and put on the switch for the plug point. The lights glowed for a fraction of second then……………. darkness occupied the room in fact the whole house. He was again in a mess. The fuse got fused due to overloading. Oh that can't be repaired before tomorrow morning. Now what? He took out his lighter. At times smoking helps???? His confused and depressed face could be seen from the light of the flame. He grabbed the torch, put it on and searched for the candles. He found so many scented candles in Krishna's room. Actually she made him buy those in a fair but was yet to use them. Jay thought that he can use some of them. As he lighted some of those the room seemed to illuminate and the scent and the light mingled through his senses. He felt more romantic at heart. So he took out all the candles and the room was filled with balloons & candles. He kept the dishes and chocolates and desserts on the centre table along with the flowers. As there was no electricity so he took out the walkman and inserted a cassette of instrumental music. He checked the player but it didn't play. He shook it; he turned to the other side of the cassette but of no use. He then remembered that he didn't put the battery in it. But where was he supposed to get batteries? Bani knew. Oh there was the table clock, one in their room another one in Krishna's room. Done two batteries found, now the walkman played. He paused for a moment and thought how young at heart it felt to do such things for his Bani………

**MY**

Bani was her way back home. She was angry with Jay that's true but it has become history. Now she was feeling to get home as soon as possible. She didn't even call him for once throughout the day. In fact he didn't call either. So what! Oh these silly issues still popped up at this age. Why what's wrong with this age. Love is beyond the age barrier. She didn't like arguing with him. Oh god she wanted to reach home soon and find her hubby…………sleeping, no not sleeping but chatting with friends on phone. No other better work is left for him. Did he take the lunch timely? Was the curry too spicy today? Did he do his exercise today? No wonder she needed to see him fast. But this car. Actually his car. He didn't even bother to repair this thing. And now see Bani was waiting for the mechanic to finish the repairing. It was already 7 o'clock. By this time she should have been at home. All Jay's fault!

Meanwhile Jay was waiting and waiting for his valentine to come. She was late. Was she serious about committing suicide? No no. what if? Damn…..when will she come? He heard the sound of screeching brakes. Yes she has come. Time for action. Bani was surprised that the house was covered with darkness, even the bulb above the staircase was not glowing. She knocked the door. Knocked it twice, and the door opened slowly as a faint smell started to invade her senses.

**….**

Bani looked at Jay. A candle in between them lighted their faces. Jay moved to make space for Bani to enter. Bani couldn't take her eyes off her husband. No he didn't seem to be the 58 years old Jay Walia she saw before leaving for office. In fact it was the 30 years old Jay Walia wearing that aqua coloured shirt, all hairs black with a soft look in his eyes and a lovely smile on his face. She stood spellbound. Even Jay also felt like watching the same 25 years old Bani with all the innocence and beauty that made her look like nothing less than an angel. Jay placed the candle on the table, knelt down on one of his legs, picked up a balloon and said, "will you be my valentine once more?" Bani looked at the balloon and saw 'I LOVE YOU' written on it in Jay's handwriting. Bani took it without hesitation and hugged Jay who had stood up by that time. Bani felt like being in heaven being in his arms after such a long time in such a manner. Did she know this Jay Walia? On the other hand Jay also realized how much the woman loved him, as he made his hold tighter. He released her for a moment, kissed her cheeks and pressed the play button of the walkman. He took her again in his arms and they danced in tune with the music. The pink balloons lying on the floor resembled the state of Bani. They made space for more to come, more to come and more to come. The lovebirds forgot about the time, what they remembered were all those good memories with each other. As if their whole life seemed to be filled with happiness, never did they face any trouble, life was so nice to them. Everything appeared lighter, refreshing and lively. As the candles melted the young hearts also melted with emotions. They kissed for the first time. All feelings seemed to disappear in that soft touch. The music stopped to play but not what their heart hummed. Jay looked at the table and led Bani to that way. As they went to sit on the sofa, Bani sprang up. Oh those balloons!! Anyway after removing the balloons aside, they sat down. They enjoyed the food in each other's company as they shared the plate, the food, and the chocolates. Bani rested her head on Jay's shoulder as he held her by his arm. Jay turned the cassette to the other side and lighted some more candles. They sat there like that for long. As Jay's eyes got closed Bani looked up to him and wondered that it was the best decision of her life to marry him. She never regretted marrying him even in anger but never felt good as much she felt then. She surveyed his face with her eyes and hand. She couldn't remember him looking so wonderful ever. May be she was falling in love again and there were still many things to know about the man. As her hand reached his lips, she could feel warmth. She saw Jay's opened eyes on her. He drew her closer and kept her hand on his heart. The cassette stopped playing again. It was too late.

**ONCE**

Bani finally stood up and took the dishes to the kitchen. Jay didn't want to let her go. So he thought to follow her in the kitchen. As Bani stepped in the kitchen her eyes flew wide open. She placed the dishes in the sink and turned to look at Jay. Now he looked like the same 58 years old retired Jay. The kitchen was completely rummaged. Containers were fighting to make space for themselves in the crowd of so many utensils, knives and other containers. Everything was out of place. Now her eyes went to the utensils in which the food has been cooked or prepared. She wondered how she will be able to clean them. No way was this Jay Walia going to change. But wait for whom did he make such great efforts. She of course! As Bani's feelings were on a roller coaster ride Jay could see Bani turn 53 years old and very much the same angry Bani of the morning. Oh god who will save him? Bani said, "suniye…….."

**MORE**

One could hear utensils being washed. One after the other, generating several kinds of sound. Now may be someone was reorganizing the containers and other things. Oh the main thing – Laughter!!!! The house was filled with laughter. Both Mr and Mrs. Walia were laughing and at times the sound of running water stopped. Oh one wants to see what's going on there but let them enjoy sometime away from these eyes. What one missed to say was about the Valentine's Day gift!!!! They gave each other the same thing. Same thing????? Yes the same thing – the same LOVE that engulfed their lives and showed up on the fateful day.

Waves of love

Never leave the shore

They form, they merge

At times they roar

The way I want you to be

My valentine once more.

N. B.: I havent received the siggy for this FF. I request the FF Writer to take note of this fact and send it to us within a day. Then only we might consider adding it.
