Sangita,

Just caught up on the last 2 parts. You have shown Bani's inner turmoil beautifully...her reflection on her relationship with Jai from their first meeting till date. And a very mature and sensible mother-daughter conversation 👏
I am not too worried about the last part...her saying sorry to Jai.Since you are writing this I am sure you will not make Bani do something foolish.
However she needs time to sort out the relationship with Mayank.
Looking forward to the next part soon.

Wow a quick update...thanks hun!! 😃 I have to say Sangs your ff's touch me deep in the heart. They are so well crafted and leave an impact long after I've finished reading them. 😳 😊
Bani's mom seems like a very wise lady…finally got her duffer daughter thinking at least Although the final...I am sorry Jai..has me very very worried. She can't be thinking of choosing her duty over a love that may fulfill her life in ways she can't even imagine??!! 😕
Say it isn't so……will wait with bated breath for the next part. 😃

You are a fantastic author!!!
The way you weave your stories and describe the emotions of the characters to hook your readers is awesome!!!

The "I'm sorry Jai" at the end has me a little apprehensive but I am going to hold my breath and hope that Bani wisens up and realizes the depth of her feelings for Jai and ditches Mayunk otherwise hope Jai pursues her until she wears down and admits her feelings!!!

Jai chasing her would be a fun read!!!

By the way, like your Mama Dixit a whole lot more than KD of KS!!!!

Part XV

The next morning Bani woke up all fresh and raring to go. Yes Mom had been right, she had lots to do today. She would have to go meet Mayank after office, he had called a couple of times the previous day but his calls had gone unattended yesterday. And then Jai …

Shaking his thoughts away from her head, Bani dressed quickly and started for her Office. She would have to go to their JV Tourism Office also. Bani did not feel like driving today, so she took a cab instead. The driver, pleased with a pretty face early in the morning, turned on the car radio and music filled the empty vestiges of the cab –

Kyon machalta hai mann

Kyon aati hain bahaar, kyon lut ta hai karaar

A few lanes across, Jai's car made its way through the busy Mumbai streets. He was trying to maintain a cheerful faade when in reality his heart was in tatters. He had laid all his cards on the table, now it was Bani's call. But he somehow knew that Bani would not compromise her duties towards her family. But no, he could not break down so what he was going to lose the most important person in his life. So what? For the happiness of his best friend, he would bear everything as a cross and not refer to his feelings again. He was aware that his sudden change of attitude was driving Bani crazy and she was in a dilemma. But no, her best friend would not torture her anymore. He would not stand in her path of happiness anymore. So what he would not get Bani as his complete whole in every sense of the term??? The friendship he shared with her was far more valuable to him; he would not jeopardize it ever. A determined Jai set his jaw firmly and drove his way to his Office.

The song brought an onrush of issue and pictures on front of Bani's eyes – ALL concerning Jai and her association with him. She tried to find a coherence in her thought process but it was of no use, Bani shook her head exasperatedly. She crossed her arms across and hugged herself, how she wanted to be comforted and loved by … The whisp of the name sent a shock wave through her system.

Mayank's call around 5 p.m. and his reminder about their evening date woke Bani from her work-induced frenzy and she looked at the watch for the first time that day. Oh My God, she thought, it's already 5.30 p.m. Bani groaned inwardly as she reminded herself forcefully that she would have to go to meet Mayank at a swanky restaurant, dressed like an office goer??? She started groaning again but realized that she had to go and she could not stand up Mayank today. It was very important, he had said, so she had to meet him. Also she had something important to discuss with him.

Bani thought 'At least, he could have chosen a quiet place.'

Chucking her laptop inside the drawer, Bani quickly picked up her purse and headed towards the restroom. She freshened up and applied a fresh coat of lipstick and dabbed her perfume at her wrists. Considering herself satisfactorily, she headed towards The Golden Arrow.

Mayank was already there when Bani reached the restaurant around 6.30 p.m. Mayank was happy to see her and proceeded to kiss her lightly on her cheek. A hesitant Bani pulled back and looked at Mayank with a surprised look.

'Sorry Bani, I am sorry', he said 'please sit down. I am so glad you came'.

Bani sat down clumsily, she was already feeling tired. As Mayank turned towards the waiter to order, Bani looked at her watch yet again, cursing the minute hands that were moving too slowly to suit her taste and interest. After a while, she looked up to see Mayank regarding her quizzically.

She said grimly 'Nothing Mayank, I am so tired today. Office work you see.'

Mayank nodded his head and replied thoughtfully
'I know Bani, you are very stressed out. I think the break after our marriage will do good to you. It looks like you can do with some rest. Lets hurry up so that you we can leave early too.'

The waiter arrived with two bowls of soup. Looking at her bowl dejectedly, Bani asked
'Ok, what did you want to share Mayank? I guess something really important.'

Mayank's eyes were gleaming with excitement

'Yes Bani, I am so happy today, it seems like I have got everything in the world today, all that I ever desired. I have a promotion effective from next month, so that means we will be leaving for Chicago within three months time. Of course, we will have to get married in between', Mayank said with a throaty chuckle.

The spoon that was performing the duty of transferring portions of soup from the bowl to Bani's mouth suddenly felt too heavy for her fingers. The words that escaped from Mayank's lips added an extra weight to the spoon, Bani felt and she kept the spoon down. She tried to feel but somehow could not share Mayank's excitement and happiness. But he was her fianc right? Bani's head started to swim and Mayank's face appeared like a blur who continued with enthusiasm -

'Both Papa and Mummy are very happy. They will go to your Home day after tomorrow to meet your parents and fix a date for our wedding.'

He picked up Bani's hand and said tenderly
'Finally the wedding ring will adorn your finger in place of this engagement ring. You can't even believe Bani how happy I am.'

Hot tears welled up in Bani's eyes but she quelled them down, not her she kept on chanting like a mantra. How ironical she thought. For the same occasion, while someone was delirious with happiness, somebody else was mad with grief. She suddenly heard somebody calling out Mayank's name. Bani looked up when Mayank excused himself for a few minutes, muttering that he would back after meeting his one –time colleague.

It was around 9 p.m. when Jai reached home. Maasi was worried about him and was on the verge of rebuking him, but one look at his brooding face and Maasi thought it better to keep her mouth shut. Jai skipped dinner and retired to his room. In spite of the resolution he had made in the morning, he found himself slipping and he was mad at himself. Turning on the music system, he went to the washroom. What he needed was a good soak, Jai thought and a sound sleep. Maybe I will be able to start my life in a better fashion coming tomorrow. Maybe tomorrow's sun will usher in a hopeful life for me.

It was about half an hour later that he emerged from his bath. Wearing his drawstrings and wrapping himself in his robe, he proceeded to the terrace, hand-combing his hair. He could hear Asha Bhonsle, his fave singer, singing

Kahi aag lage, lag jaye
Kahin naag dasey, das jaye
Kahin gagan girey gir jaye
Chahe kuch bhi ho jaye
Is tutey dil ki peer sahin na jaye

He looked at the night sky, his house being located in a quiet neighborhood; he could hear crickets singing and some other unrecognizable sounds

Jaye jaan na jaye jiya
Har waqt guzar jata hai
Par dard thaher jaat ahai
Sab bhul bhi jaye koi kuch yaad rahe jaata hai ….

As Jai moved away to the farthest corner of the terrace, the strains removed themselves from his audible range. He sat down on the ivory bench and gazed out thoughtfully. Since he was dressed only in the robe, he was feeling a little chilly. He was so engrossed in his thoughts that he did not even register the sound of hesitant steps making way towards him in the terrace.
