Part XIV

Mine eye and heart are at a mortal war,
How to divide the conquest of thy sight;
Mine eye my heart thy picture's sight would bar,
My heart mine eye the freedom of that right.
My heart doth plead that thou in him dost lie –
A closet never pierc'd with crystal eyes –
But the defendant doth that plea deny,
And says in him thy fair appearance lies.
To 'cide this title is impanelled
A quest of thoughts, all tenants to the heart;
And by their verdict is determined
The clear eye's moiety, and the dear heart's part :
As thus – mine eye's due is thy outward part,
And my heart's right thy inward love of heart.

(William Shakespeare, Sonnet No. XLVI)

Bani reached home late and explained to her family that she had some important work at Office. She excused herself from Dinner that night saying that she was not feeling well. Arundhati Dixit's troubed eyes followed her daughter as she climbed up the stairs to her room. She knew her daughter well and realized that Bani wanted to be alone now. Yes, she would go to her room after Dinner was over and everybody had retired to their respective rooms.

After some time later, she carried a bowl of soup, Bani's favourite, with her and opened the door slowly, after a brief knock. Its not that she knocked on the doors of her daughters room when she entered, but today she realized that it was a different case altogether and she wanted to gauge Bani's state of mind before interfering. Both Bani and Rano had always confided in her about everything that happened in their lives and she was more of a friend to them, more than a Mom. She knew that something was troubling Bani very badly and she wanted to help her ease herself out of the situation.

She noticed that Bani was sitting on her bed, all hunched up, staring out of the window, the room washed by only a pale dim light. Arundhati Dixit placed the bowl of soup on the centre table carefully and went and sat beside Bani on the bed, and placed her hand on Bani's head lovingly. Bani leapt out of her trance like state

'Mom, you here? When did you come in? Sorry, I didn't notice you', she mumbled an apology.

'Its ok dear', her Mother nodded understandably. 'Now Bani I want to tell you something. I have always been a friend to both Rano and you, rather than a straight-laced Mother. And I am here to help you two always. I have this weird feeling that something's troubling you very badly and you are trying to deal with it. I have complete faith on you Dear and on your capability to handle situations but you must remember sometimes that its better to share your problems with somebody who can help you. Its your choice entirely but that's my opinion.'

Both Mother and Daughter sat silently for a while. After a while, sensing her Mother trying to get up, Bani caught hold of her Mother's hand and held it strongly, as if she was afraid of letting her go. One glance at Bani's face and her Mother knew that she had done the right thing by coming to her daughter. Bani nestled closer to her Mom and laid her head on her Mother's shoulder.

After an eternity or so, Bani asked 'Mom, how important is to stick to one's commitment?'

'A lot', Mrs. Dixit answered 'depending on the circumstances. Though this is important, we should also remember that committing ourselves to something is not only important, we should also ensure that we fulfill this commitment with a happy heart, and not feel as if the act is going to lead us to the gallows.'

They could hear the strains of the song 'Yaar bina chain kaha re, Pyar bina chian kaha re …' floating in through the partially opened door from Rano's room, who was a Hindi song buff.

Bani spoke after a while 'I seem to be at cross roads Mom and I cant decide what is right or wrong. Sticking to my commitment and fulfilling it and carry on with my life, or whether to break it and retrace my steps towards that destination that was probably meant to be?'

Her Mother turned towards her completely

'Bani, tell me is this about your marriage?' she asked

Bani lowered her face and started picking on her toe finger, her silence seemed to convey to her Mother more than what her words could communicate.

'So this is about Jai, isn't it Bani?' the strong yet reassuring voice of her Mother permeated through Bani's senses.

'Don't know Mom, I am so confused', she replied.

'Did Jai say anything to you? What about Mayank? Bani, do you realize that only two months is left for your marriage dear?' Arundhati said.

Bani got down from her bed and walked towards the balcony.

'I know Mom. These issues have surfaced all of a sudden. I have tried very hard to push them away from my mind but I can't deny the fact Mom, that even today, Jai means much more to me than Mayank. Though I am wearing the ring that Mayank has given me, it's Jai and his welfare that engulfs my living thoughts all through the day. I cannot deny these feelings Mom.

Jai is my best friend and Mayank is my fianc. But why then don't I feel anything extra for Mayank? I tried Mom, please believe me, but every time it seemed as if there's a vacuum there.'

By this time, Arundhati Dixit was beside her daughter in the balcony. Both of them stared out at the night sky.

Bani continued 'Mayank is a very good person Mom, and he's exactly what every parent would desire in their son-in-law and he has a promising future ahead of him too. He deserves all the happiness in the world Mom, and I am scared I might not be able to give him all those.'

At last, Arundhati opened her mouth 'But what about Jai? Did he say anything?'

Bani sighed heavily, still looking at the sky, but playing with the ring on her finger

'Mom, he tried to imply something but I know it's more or less an unconscious effort. I think I will have to speak to him. What do you say Mom?'

'Its definitely tricky dear' her Mom said 'and everything depends on the question whether you two love each other or not? Do you love Jai or are you in love with him? If you can answer these questions successfully, half of your problem will be solved.

I can't say anything more Dear, because our family prestige is also of an issue here. The Dixits have never gone back on their words ever, but things do change with time.'

She further said 'I think you should call it a day today Bani. You have lots to do tomorrow I guess. I had brought some soup for you but I guess it has become tepid. Do you want some soup? I can prepare some fresh soup for you dear'.

Bani shook her head as a 'No' and her Mother left the room, with the indifferent bowl of soup with her, closing the door firmly behind her back.

Bani slowly turned back towards her bed when she suddenly turned to gaze at the sky again. She was lucky because a shooting star was making its way across the Milky Way. Wishing on the star, her hands clasped in a prayer, Bani closed her eyes and whispered 'Oh Jai. I am sorry'.

The shooting star evaporated across the horizon.

Sangita:

What a calm, down to earth woman is Mrs. Dikshit. Any other woman in her place would have freaked out over something like this with the wedding just two months away.

OK now what is with the last line? How do I interpret it?

Sorry Jai because she got engaged to Mayank OR

Sorry Jai because she is going to stick to her commitment to Mayank?πŸ˜•πŸ˜‘

Please clarify.

"Oh Jai...I'm sorry"

Uh oh...that doesn't sound good.

I love her mother. She's so understanding and level headed πŸ‘

AMAZING part Sangita!! πŸ‘ πŸ‘ πŸ‘

I really hope the last line doesn't mean what I think it means.

But something's missing...or should I say someone?! I'm going through JB withdrawal here...help me 😳 😳
