Chapter 2
Am I so transparent? Mousy? Boring? Pathetic? Bani thought to herself, eyes brimming with tears.
Sarika Aunty put a soothing arm around Bani and squeezed it and tried to reassure Bani by saying "It'll be okay, dear. Jai will come around. He's a smart boy."
Jai cleared his throat. When he spoke, anger reverberated in his deep voice. "I'm not a boy. I'm thirty-one. I'm an MBA. I'm a vice president in the family company. I think I know my own mind and heart." Jai squared his shoulders, glaring at each member of the group in turn. His expressions were thunderous.
Karan uncle's heavy lidded eyes regarded Pia's top heavy figure from her 36 double D's that were very visible beneath her black lacy see-through top to her teensy waist, rose tattoo on the visible swell of her breast, to her pearl nose stud.
"Oh you're thinking all right" he said to Jai, sarcasm rolled off his lips. "You're not thinking with your head though."
"Are you going to let them insult me like this? Aren't you going to defend me?" Pia said in a shrill voice as she pouted, stomped her foot and looked at Jai with her too wide eyes.
When Jai rubbed his chin, his gaze flickering between their parents, Bani, and Pia, Pia whirled out of Jai's arms, stepped back and started to walk towards the door. She swiped away a tear with the back of her hand and said "I don't believe this is happening. I'm outta here and I never want to see you again, Jai Walia!"
Coming alive, Jai ran after Pia who was crying, the ache in his eyes approaching the pain in hers "Wait! Can't we discuss this. Three years isn't forever?" he said to her.
Bani agreed with the other woman, surprised that they found common ground. She sank into an overstuffed flowery lounger and held her head in her hands. Unbelievable! Her head pounded unmercifully, ready to split from the strain. She couldn't, wouldn't marry Jai now even if he and Pia broke up. Jai hated her. She and their parents had made sure of that. No way would she consider marrying that man now.
A motorcycle roared to life, polluting the quiet neighborhood with its bellowing, and then zoomed away. That must be the sound of Jai and Pia riding into the sunset never to be seen or heard from again. Good riddance to them. If Jai Walia fell off the face of the earth, I'd rejoice. Bani nodded her head once hard, her lips set in a firm, thin line.
Karan unclue cursed, comforting his softly crying wife. Rubbing her back, he murmured, "We tried. I don't know what else we could do. Maybe he'll change his mind and take us up on our offer" he said to Sarika aunty.
Offer? Didn't he mean royal command? Bani stared at the man, angrier than she'd ever been.
Sarika aunty's shoulders shook and her chin quivered as she gazed up at her husband.
"Did you see her t-tattoos? And her p p p-pierced nose? Her sh-shirt was ssss-see through!" Hiccoughs punctuated her sobs. "Why can't he choose a nice girl like Bani? Our grandchildren will ride m m m -motorcycles and wear t-tattoos!" said Sarika aunty.
"She's a wild child, all right." Karan uncle sighed deeply. "There's only two things he can possibly see in her. And the whole world can see them in that see-through black lacy thing!" he added further.
"Poor, poor Bani." Hema tried to take her daughter in her arms. "You must be heartbroken, darling" she said to Bani.
"How dare Jai choose that woman over our Bani!" Dharam blustered, his chest puffed out indignantly. His nose glowed red as it always did when he was angry.
Bani didn't want to hear this. She didn't want any part of this. She didn't want to be comforted or be an object of pity. She was a woman and she didn't like being treated like some poor, pathetic child. Standing swiftly, she swayed when blood rushed out of her head. Blinking, she said, "I'm sorry. I have to go home."
Anywhere but here. The middle of the Sahara would be preferable to this battlefield …….. she thought to herself.
"One of the hardest things in life is watching the person you love, love someone else."
The front door slammed, rattling the large bay window. "You're not going anywhere, Bani." Jai leaned against the door, his booted foot bent back against it. Narrowed eyes were flat and lifeless.
"I'll marry Bani. You know I can't abandon my people, no matter how much I love Pia" He glared at his father first and then at her father. His voice lacked emotion, as well. "But I want it in writing that if we want out of the marriage in three years, we can divorce and I'll still get my inheritance and keep my position with the company" he said in an authoritative voice.
Sarika sniffed back her tears. Her cheeks were stained where her make-up had smeared. "You're doing the right thing, Jai. You'll be so much happier with Bani than you'd ever be with that gold-digger Pia" she said.
Dharam chimed in and added with sarcasm "Our Bani is a much better choice of wife for an up and coming executive than that lace and leather cutie pie of yours."
Jai's lips pulled back, baring white, even teeth. His hands clenched and unclenched as he pushed himself away from the door.
"Let's get a couple of things straight right now" he said and held up his hands, and counted on his fingers.
Holding his forefinger up, he said succinctly, "One, I'm marrying Bani in protest, only to save the plant and everybody's jobs."
He then held up the next finger. "Two, I love Pia and I'll always love Pia."
Then he thrust out his third finger, controlled fury building in his voice "Three, none of you are to say anything derogatory about the woman I love."
His thumb shot up. "Four, when I marry Pia in three years from now when this sham of a marriage ends, you will at least pretend to accept her and not upset her with your acid comments and snide looks. Got it?" he said with finality.
"You won't even remember that girl in three years" Karan rocked back on the heels of his loafers as he raked unsteady fingers through his hair.
Jai held up his hand, palm flat out and said "Not another word against her or you can take your money and your job and sh ….. I won't stand for it."
"Jai Walia!" Sarika Walia marched over to him seething. "You will show respect for your father. And you will show respect for me and for Bani and her parents." She pivoted on the ball of her high heel, looking at each person in the room in turn. "While we're all together, let's talk about the wedding" she added.
"Wedding?" The blood drained from Jai's face as he practically choked on the word as if it was the most vile word in the English language.
"I hope you don't mean a large ceremony? Let's just go to the Court Registrar and get this over with quietly. I don't want any press, big commotion or anything frilly. The sooner we start, the sooner we can get it over with. This is hurting Pia enough as it is" suggested Jai.
Acid indigestion exploded in Bani's chest. She had a say in the matter, too. And she didn't want to marry, much less be alone in the same room with a man who loathed her. Stretching to her full height, holding her nauseated stomach, she lifted her guarded gaze to Jai, their gazes clashing.
Bani then jabbed her finger at Jai and said "I don't need this. I don't need your money. And I don't need you. I don't care if you never see a dime of your inheritance. Go marry your tattoo covered hippy girlfriend Pia and see if I care."
Bani marched to the door and wrenched it open, noting that Karan uncle's mouth dropped open several notches at her unexpected behavior. Everyone was accustomed to seeing nice, polite, compliant Bani all the time. They didn't think she possessed a mind of her own or the gumption to follow her own heart. They were probably in shock.
"Now I know I've got a heart, because it's hurting and I can hear it breaking."
