When Rakshanda Khan did an M F Husain...

The actress travelled barefoot from Heathrow to Mumbai, after her chappal gave way

Sapana Patil Poojary

Always keep a pair of spare footwear handy. This was the lesson television actress Rakshanda Khan learnt while travelling from London recently. Khan usually comes across as someone who is conscious about the way she carries herself. But she was left with little choice but to keep her prim and propah self aside as she travelled half way across the globe wearing nothing but a pair of airline socks!

The actress was in the United States where she was a guest at a charity event for cancer patients. Rakshanda recalls, "I had gone to the US for a charity event which Pankaj Udhas is associated with. Sunil Gavaskar and Shatrughan Sinha had also come. While returning, I came via Heathrow. And after I had checked in at the Heathrow airport, the strap of my chappal gave way! I was so embarrassed!"

Khan says she usually has a pair of footwear in her cabin baggage, but didn't this time. She says, "I didn't know what to do! I usually keep a pair of shoes in my hand baggage, but this time I didn't because it was a long journey. And the rest of my baggage was checked in. Also, I generally wear sneakers on flight. But as luck would have it I decided to give them a pass this time."

Khan had almost given in to the idea of being entirely barefoot throughout the journey. She says, "I thought I would have to emulate M F Husain. But I found a way out. I wore the socks given by the airline and made my journey to India. It was good that I was wearing a pair of jeans."

But she took it all in her stride. She says, "I kept laughing all my way back. This was a first for me…" And hopefully also the last, we say.

• I usually keep a pair of shoes in my hand baggage, but this time I didn't...

After Hours Correspondent

Shabbir Ahluwalia who plays a cameo in 'Kasamh Se' (Zee) met with an accident on the sets on Thursday. While performing a dance sequence, the actor hurt himself when the stage floor gave away.

Though he was not seriously hurt, he did suffer minor bruises. The actor was quite shaken up by the incident but completed his shot. Incidentally, he was spotted at actor Nausheen Ali Sardar's birthday bash later that evening.

Young and restless
Prachi Desai tells Anil Merani that she will never be one to expose on TV owing to her good upbringing.
The most common image that comes in mind when you think of a 17-year-old girl is that of a babe studying in college and spending time with her friends. However, Prachi Desai who plays the lead role of 'Baani' in Zee TV's Kasamh Se, is totally opposite to that image. While girls of her age frequent malls and cafs, this Gujju chic is working long shifts non-stop to keep her viewers entertained.

Would you tell us something about your background?

I come from a close-knit family in Gujarat, which includes my folks and elder sister. I completed my schooling from there and later on, came to Pune for higher studies.

How did you land up in Mumbai?

I was studying in Pune and had almost finished my junior college. It so happened that one day I came to know about this audition Balaji was having for Kasamh Se. I casually walked in and auditioned. What followed was a call from the production house and I was here, in Mumbai after spending one and a half year in Pune.

That means you left your studies incomplete?

Yes, I had no other option. Either I could complete my studies, or I could have pursued my dream – of becoming an actor.

Don't you think you are making a mistake by not completing your studies before leaping into Tellywood?

That's true, but then acting is my passion. I do intend to at least complete my graduation though. It would not be in physiology (which I wanted to do earlier) as I would have to do some simpler course given the fact that it would be through correspondence.

You are playing the eldest of the three sisters in Kasamh Se, when actually you are the youngest of them all!

Yes, it's funny, but you know how television works. The three of us really gel well; we have loads of fun on the sets. We are like sisters only.

How different are you from your character 'Baani'?

'Baani' is a very serious and responsible girl for whom her sisters are everything, I on the other hand, am a very care free girl. A happy-go-lucky teenager.

It's raining romance, desi style

(Posted on 30 June 2006)

Jai and Bani. Raghu and Aanya. Nimmo and Kunal. Matters couldn't be more comfortably mushy as the season gets just right for fanning those flames of passion and affection. And while the tired old family dramas keep up their tired old antics, it's the time tested but potent Mills and Boon flavour of Kasamh Se, Jab Love Hua and Nimmo... that's been cheering up TV for some days now.

"If Kavita Kaushik is looking to get back into the Balaji fold, she could have chosen better"

This week, Nimmo, accompanied by the loud though lovable Kantaben (veteran actor Bharati Achrekar who's also fallen for the Balaji bait) managed to come out unscathed from another misadventure in Mauritius. But the perpetually perplexed looking hubby grappled with another knotty problem in the form of former girlfriend Natasha. If Kavita Kaushik is looking to get back into the Balaji fold (there's not much work for her after the dying Kesar), she could have chosen better. As Natasha, garishly made up and dressed like a tart, she doesn't look or act like she could win anyone's affections, let alone a married old flame.

Over at Zee, Saat Phere's plain Jane Saloni continues to keep viewers mysteriously hooked despite stiff competition from the timorous Bani of Kasamh Se, who, it now seems, will definitely win over the snooty husband (played with remarkable restraint by another good actor, Ram Kapoor), again over the affections of another old flame who's popped out of the history books.

But the best story of the lot, away from the artifice of the in laws and the artificial gloss of city life, is that of Raghu and Aanya. Tony and Deeya Singh's labour of love after Jassi, Jab Love Hua has picked up steam in the last few days (did dropping the extra 'b' from the title have anything to do with this?).

The protagonists are spontaneous, the dialogues pithy and spiked spicily with a rural flavour, which is a refreshing change. The hero (Sudeep Sahir doing a much better job than in Ayushmaan) goes about comfortably in his dhoti and vest, and still retains a charm that no Millionaire-sponsored wardrobe can match. Priya Badlani may have started awkward, but she's gotten well into the skin of Aanya, a curious mixture of innonence and urban conceit, This week, she almost got an embarrassed Raghu to confess his love, unaware that she herself was the subject of his feelings. Just the kind of feel good story to look forward to on rainy evenings.

'Jab Love Hua' duo: The home grown variety that's finally clicking

Quite unlike the other contorted efforts that pass for programming. Sony's Risshton Ki Dorr, inspired by Three Sisters, continues to confound. The story doesn't seem to know whether to focus itself on the brother's love for his sisters, the wife's obsession with a prominent builder, or the builder's wooden romance with one of the sisters. The same goes for Sony's other prime time show Ek Ladki Anjaani Si. The desi version of Juana Le Virgen has been meandering after its efforts to Indianise the 'socially uncomfortable' theme of a young girl's inadvertent pregnancy. It may be trying to go back to the original track, but by now, who cares?

Which brings me to the happy conclusion that it is the home grown variety that's finally clicking. With the exception of a Pyar Ke Do Naam, Ek Radha Ek Shyaam (with a name like that, did they expect it to work though?), it is the indigenous plots that may set the tone for the remainder of the year. May the rash of foreign format shows inspired by the Jassi phenomenon die peacefully, and allow us to grow old happily with the likes of Saat Phere, Jab Love Hua, even a Thodi Khushi Thode Gham...

New Serials this 2006
On Zee TV Kasamh Se This is the story of three sisters – Bani, Pia and Rano who live in the beautiful town of Mount Abu. All three sisters are different from each other. The oldest sister, Bani (Prachi Desai), is content with life. The second, Pia (Roshni) dreams of marrying a rich man and the youngest, Rano (Arunima) wants to achieve her goal of becoming a rich business tycoon. The story is about how these three sisters go to live in Mumbai with a millionaire uncle when their father dies and how they come to terms with the huge culture shock. The show also stars Ram Kapoor as the rich uncle and Naman Shaw, a finalist of Zee Cinestars Ki Khoj in an important role. Look forward to loads of drama and huge sets in this Ekta Kapoor show.

Mamta
Mamta, as the name suggests is about motherhood. It is the story of a young surrogate mother who is first told that her child is still born but later comes to know that the baby is alive but not in safe hands. The serial tells the story of an unhappily married man who falls in love with the mother of his surrogate child. With such twists and turns, looks like Mamta is the usual family drama with a strange twist. The show stars Anand Suryavanshi, Preeti Puri and Neha Mehta (of Ayushmaan fame) in the lead.
Business Baazigar
The concept of this show comprises of entrepreneurs coming forth with their ideas and the ones with the most innovative and unusual concept will get complete financing from Zee TV for beginning the project. Touted to be another reality show, Business Baazigar is supposed to be Zee honcho Subhash Chandra's brainchild.
On Star One - Krimson Skies Krimson Skies is all about music and the stage. With Amit Tandon in the lead role of a singer and Amarr Upadhyay, Moonmoon and Abhinav Kapoor (Shravan of Kasautii Zindagi Kay) in key roles, this show promises to be an interesting one. Naturally, Amit Tandon will be singing for this show. Karbon Kopy Karbon Kopy is said to be a fictional thriller on the lines of X-Files. Shubha Verma (Tanisha of Kasautii) is playing the lead role of a Delhi-based model with a troubled past who comes to Mumbai. Sumeet Sachdev plays the man from her past. Yash Tonk's character loves Shubha but she ends up marrying someone else. It is supposed to be an edge of the seat thriller with paranormal situations and will go on air by March.
Kya Hoga Nimmo Ka This show is supposed to be a Cinderella-like story based on, believe it or not, Ekta Kapoor's life! Nimmo's two elder sisters are high profile models but Nimmo is happy being a nobody. Earlier called Kannu Ki Kismat Mein Kya Hai, the show has the protagonist turning into a television tycoon a la Ekta. A new girl called Sanchita, who was spotted by Ekta at a party, is playing the lead. Navneet Nishan will also be seen as Nimmo's cunning and scheming chachi. Nimmo is in love with Vikrant (Sanjit Bedi) but ends up marrying Kunal (Hiten Tejwani), a rich tycoon. Incidentally, Vikrant is Kunal's best friend and also works in his office. Dolly Thakore, the renowned theatre actress makes her debut with this show opposite Dara Singh as Nimmo's dadi.
On Sony Kandy Floss Kandy Floss, which has a television magazine concept will be anchored by Archana Puran Singh and an animated character called Kandy. Both will take the viewers on a round of the party and gossip on TV. Kandy is being modelled around a stylish, catty and sophisticated page 3 socialite. This new show will be on air by mid-January.
Khush Raho Tum Sada
This one-hour afternoon daily will see Anuj Saxena back on Sony after Kkusum. Set in a middle-class household, Anuj has the responsibility of his three sisters which often leads to conflicts between him and his wife Anupama Varma. Gaurav Gera (Nandu) plays the elder sister's husband and Gaurav Chanana is the younger sister's boyfriend.
Kabhie To Nazar Milao
Though the promos of this show are on air, the story line is not very clear. This Sony show stars Sudeepa Singh, a Zee Cinestars Ki Khoj finalist in the lead role of a blind girl, Sunaina.
Paisa Bhari Padega
This is Sony's new reality show where television actors will have to literally battle it out to win a huge booty. There will be actors like Rucha Gujrati, Narayani Shastri, Tassnim Sheikh and Nausheen Ali Sardar who will compete under the 'Bahu' category and Gaurav Chopra, Sameer Kochchar and Bhairavi Raichura, among others, in the 'Fit and Healthy' category. Shot completely in the natural surroundings of Hrishikesh, Paisa Bhari Padega will have these celebs battling out in adventure sports like water rafting, trekking, cycling and even a treasure hunt.
On Star Plus Viraasat This ambitious show by Ravi Baghban Chopra is touted to be a business drama. The show revolves around the character of an ex-Miss India played by Pooja Ghai Rawal who is playing a role with grey shades for the first time. Amarr Upadhyay has also been signed for the lead. Apparently the show will go on air by February when Kaun Banega Crorepati – 2 ends its current season. Aman Varma also plays an out and out negative role for the first time.

Now, Ram Kapoor collapses on the sets of Kasamh Se

TV actors passing out on the sets, on account of stress or fatigue, seems to have become the norm. Recently, Ram Kapoor, who plays Jai Walia in Kasamh Se, blacked out while shooting for an important scene in the serial.

The actor tried to reach for a chair, but lost his balance and fainted. The shoot was put on hold for a while until he felt better. It's being said that Ram has been quite stressed of late, more so, after his wife, Gautami Gadgil's delivery.

The actor tries to pack as much as he can in a single day so he can spend more time with his new-born. It?s not unusual for actors to work beyond the scheduled hours. And the Kasamh Se unit in particular is working on a zero-episode bank. A few months ago, Roshni Chopra, who plays Pia in the same serial had fainted after shooting non-stop for 44 hours!

What?s really surprising is that no actor is compaining. Maybe with the sums they make daily, they prefer to keep mum.

Queen Khan of TV
Farhana Farook
Sunday, July 02, 2006 18:46 IST

The ebony-complexioned Rakshanda Khan has had a long innings. From modelling to anchoring to acting, Rakshanda has juggled all with ease.

Rakshanda's range: The literature graduate says, "I guess I have been luckier than the rest. I like interacting with audiences so I was able to anchor shows ('Jodee Kamal Ki'). Acting happened by default. I was lucky to be part of the most popular shows, 'Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin' (Sony) and 'Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi' (Star Plus). If I am playing the positive bahu Tanya in 'Kyunkii…' I am off-setting it with an all-evil Roshni in 'Kasamh Se' (Zee) today," she says. She continues, "Playing good gets boring, bad girls add spice!"

Coming back to 'Jassi', her charcater as the glam Mallika had grey shades in a scenario dominated by the black and white. Rakshanda says self-effacingly, "The credit goes to the writers who did not make Mallika uni-dimensional. Also the saris that I got complimented for were designer Satya Paul's drapes."

You comment on the actor's chaste diction and Rakshanda credits her parents for this asset. She says, "They spoke beautiful Urdu. I imbibed it from them."

Rakshanda's rules: The actor went plucky when she recently set work deadlines in an otherwise erratic industry. She states, "Had I not set this 9 am to 9 pm deadline, I would have landed in hospital. When you cannot enjoy life after working so hard, it all seems pointless. I learnt to be disciplined during my modelling days from designer Hemant Trivedi, who's a stickler for punctuality." She adds, "It's more difficult to maintain success than to achieve it."

Rakshanda's rejuvenation: The actor also reveals her beat-stress mantra. She says, "I follow the '3 Fs' formula. I scream at my family, hang out with my friends and watch films and more films!"

For someone who fits the conventional beauty bill, Rakshanda looks for the unconventional in her man, "When you are in college you search for the tall, dark and handsome. But eventually you realize that compatibility and respect are a must. I'd want somebody who takes me for who I am and not just as a trophy!"

By Anil Merani

With Indian cinema getting bolder by the day, how could its smaller cousin, TV remain sedate and boring? In order to spice up things, television too has taken the bold route with a few hot-n-steamy scenes now being thrown in to otherwise boring soaps. Recently, Viraasat on Star Plus actually shocked audiences by showing a rather intimate scene between protagonists Sangita Ghosh and Rohit Roy on their wedding night. When asked about her bold scenes, Sangita Ghosh says, "I really cannot understand what the fuss is all about. When our TV girls are already sporting necklines and halter blouses, what's new and different that I have done?"

Similarly, Kasamh Se on Zee TV also showed a lovemaking scene between Ram Kapoor and Prachi Desai. Here too, our otherwise sweet and innocent heroine didn't find anything wrong in it. "Such scenes have been done before. It's only because my scene is new that people are making a big hue and cry about it," justifies Praachi. She also says, "It was a very normal scene, it appeared bold only because it was shot in the bedroom."

We would like to ask her only one question here — If the scene was really so normal, why did she have to give 20-25 takes? And can a man kissing a woman all over her body be termed 'normal'? "Definitely not! We are not going to tolerate all these. What are we showing our children through such embarrassing scenes on TV?" says Madhu Shastri, a housewife and a mother of two young kids. According to her, such serials should be banned. She also says that she feels very awkward when her kids ask her what those people are doing.

Noted psychiatrist Dr Sachchidanand says, "Today's children are anyway exposed to such things. Keeping them away from TV is not going to help much. Rather, one should try and explain the good and bad aspects of sex to their children so that such things don't have any bad influence on their minds."

The general public though isn't so broad-minded because a source who doesn't want to be quoted says, "How many bikini clad women do you see walking on our beaches? When you can not turn Juhu into Miami, why are you trying to convert our Buniyaad and Hum Log into Baywatch?."

Stars give their take on heating up the screen

Manini De Mishra (Pari of Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin)

I would be very uncomfortable doing intimate scenes; it's not in my comfort zone. Is there really a need for some bedroom scenes on TV? Let's face it guys, such scenes are simply meant to titillate. Let's not forget that we have children watching such programmes. Those people who want to watch adult stuff can get it from films, so spare the TV.

Sangita Ghosh, (Pammi of Des Mein...)

There was nothing bad about the way our wedding night sequence was shot in Viraasat. The scene was done very aesthetically, more importantly this scene was very important from the point of view of the narrative. After all, does not any marriage require a physical relationship?

Manasi Salvi (Sati on Sahara One)

I am completely against bold stuff on Indian television. It's a medium that the whole family watches together, so please stick to decent stuff. Regarding the argument that showing love making scenes is part of the narrative, why do you need to show it visually when there are enough suggestive ways to show it? In our Indian culture, sex between a married couple is a private and beautiful thing, please don't corrupt it.

Prachi Desai (Bani of Kasamh Se)

Our TV serials are nothing when compared to what is shown on cinema. Besides, I myself will not be comfortable doing the real bold stuff.

ONE MORE ARTICLE

Soaps with hot sops

Viraasat: This serial is already going all out to show the real chemistry between newly-weds and promises more in the future too.

Kasamh Se: The hot scene between lead characters, Jai Walia and Bani, in a recent episode reminded one of Emraan Hashmi's staple fare from the big screen.

Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi: This is one family soap which has re-invented itself countless times with new topics, including bed room scenes and even a rape.

Kasautii Zindagii Kay: One of the most popular serials on air, it dealt with a rape case and we are sure, the TRPs for that particular episode would have been really high.

Woh Rehne Wali Mehlo Ki: Though this show pales in comparison to other soaps on air, it too has had its share of tele intimacy

TV's new loverboy is a man in a hurry

He had disappeared from the scene a year back. But now, Ram Kapoor is Balaji's main man in Kasamh se where he has a meaty role to play. However, Kapoor finds it difficult to juggle between home and work, he tells sonalee singh

What is the reason for your comeback to silver screen post Ghar Ek Mandir?

I was busy doing films so I didn't really get the time for soap. However, I have never taken a break from acting per say. Acting had always been my passion and I am happy the way my career is shaping up.

How is your association with Balaji telefilms?

I am really happy working with Balaji. I share a wonderful rapport with the production house and it is great working with it.
They set an example of an extremely professional production house.
And I am glad Ekta Kapoor, too, has that much faith in me.

What do you look for in the script before signing for a role?

I take a close look at my character and make sure that my role is strong and challenging. The script has to be gripping and interesting from the word go. I am a very meticulous person and that reflects when I read each and every word of the script that has been given to me.

How did you approach the role of Jai Walia in Kasamh se?

I have worked hard to bring life to my character. Though I didn't do any special preparations for the role. Jai Walia had me interested from day one and I had that confidence to act him out perfectly. Touch wood! I have been successful so far. Acting comes to me spontaneously .

How does it feel to be a father?

It is the best feeling in the world . It feels wonderful to be someone who has a child to care and play with. After becoming a father I have matured as a person and it makes me elated to be with my kid.

Do you spend enough time with your family?

Oh! hardly any. I have got packed schedules so it becomes really difficult to spend quality time with them.

Nausheen & Shabbir: Yeh nazdeekiyaan

Ahluwalia seemed to be very close with the actress at her recent birthday bash
khaas dosti: Nausheen Ali Sardar and Shabbir Ahluwalia
Vickey Lalwani
vickey.lalwani@mid-day.com

Ever since she broke up with Vikas Kalantri, Nausheen Ali Sardar has kept a low profile. But all that changed when she threw a rocking her birthday bash at Kinos Cottage in Versova on June 29. At the party, her closeness with actor Shabbir (Rishi of Kahiin To Hoga) Ahluwalia was very evident.
Growing fondness
Adds our source, "Nausheen is very happy these days. You can see it on her face. It's all thanks to Shabbir. They are very are very fond of each other." When Nausheen unveiled her round cake, her friends at the party teased her that she should've ordered for a heart-shaped cake.
Nausheen describes her budding feelings for Shabbir with the oft-repeated, 'we are good friends' routine. "Shabbir is a buddy. I got to know him in Malaysia where we were together for Fear Factor show. But then, there I developed friendship with other male actors like Vikas Sethi and Mukul Dev, too. We have become part of a group and we all hang out together.
Nausheen claims that she has never been with Shabbir alone. "Actually, the group is quite big — Sonia Rakkar, Swetta Keswani, Riva Bubber, Salil Ankola and his wife Pari, Mukul Dev, Vikas Sethi, Shabbir and myself."
Laughing together
Our source reveals that Shabbir even has a pet name for Ali. He calls her Naushad. Nausheen shoots back, "From my college days, I am very tomboyish. That's why the name Naushad. Vikas and Mukul also call me Naushad. We all meet together. We have many common topics to chat. Like this Fear Factor contestant I cannot name, we all had a very funny experience with her and spend lots of time talking and laughing about her."
No actors for me
Nausheen reveals that she and Shabbir have talked about the fact that people are talking about them as a couple. Is it possible that this relationship becomes more meaningful? A long pause before Nausheen replies, "I don't think so. I don't want to fall in love with an actor."
Ex-boyfriend Kalantri did not forget to wish Nausheen at the stroke of midnight. "It was very sweet of him to call. Of course, I had invited him. He was in China and so couldn't be at my party."
