👏. Both jai & Bani deserve an applause.
Good Jai heard what bani had to say to Lolita. Will he see his relationship with Lolita in differen light now.
Jai is so cute to say that he didn't know Bani earlier to know how to complement a girl.

Part-11

The (turmeric ceremonies) or Gaye holud (Bengali: ????? ???? "Yellowing the body") started from both sides, one turmeric ceremony for the bride and one for the groom separately. For Lolita's Gaye holud, Girish's family - except the Girish himself - came in procession to the Lolita's home carrying with them the Lolita's wedding outfit, wedding decoration including turmeric paste and henna, sweetmeats and gifts. They also brought two large fishes decorated as a groom and bride. The procession traditionally centered on the (younger) female relatives and friends of bride, Lolita's friends and cousins were thoroughly enjoying themselves, laughing, singing and dancing all traditionally dressed in matching clothes, mostly orange in color. Lolita was seated on a dais, her hands and feet being decorated with elaborate abstract designs of Henna. Soon her arms and legs were being applied by the turmeric paste which is said to soften the skin, but also colors the bride with the distinctive yellow hue that gives its name to this ceremony. Bani frowned, not enjoying any of the fun and frolic…for the past two days she was trying to figure out where jai was but he had vanished into thin air…and there was no use asking shakuntala who gave her funny looks…she proceeded to feed the sweet to Lolita. The ceremony had almost concluded and soon the groom's Gaye holud would begin, in a similar fashion… …

"Do not keep to yourself

Do not keep to yourself the secret of your heart, my friend!

Say it to me, only to me, in secret.

You who smile so gently, softly whisper, my heart will hear it, not my ears.

The night is deep, the house is silent, the birds' nests are shrouded with sleep.

Speak to me through hesitating tears, through faltering smiles, through sweet shame and pain, the secret of your heart… …"

Dejected bani walked out of the house…she strolled towards the river bank...the river bank was muddy with accumulated wet soil…she lifted her sari till just below her knees and started walking… reaching the side of the river…she loved to see the ripples forming on the surface of the murky waters…bending she saw her own reflection over it, flipping along with the ripples…far…at a distance she could hear a boatman singing a ballad…rowing his nauka (boat)…to shores unknown… suddenly she gathered the faint image of someone…

She sharply turned around to see jai talking to the fishermen who were pulling up the nets ready to go for catching fishes, their likely means of livelihood… …

As jai finished talking bidding them adieu his eyes fell on bani standing, with nearly an expressionless face…he slowly walked towards her… …

At first bani wanted to wave at him, but then anger took over her as and she decide against it, she turned her head back concentrating on the fleet of sailing boats…the ship which had transported them was anchored at a distance…

"Hey…" jai said cheerfully…standing beside her…bani didn't reply, her thumb reaching her teeth ready to be crucified… …

"There will be no nails left if you go on chewing them..." jai said…bani's frown deepened, she immediately brought her hand down, but still had the urge to chip her nails… …jai moved his face closer to her, peeping, she turned her face to the other side… …

"Bani…"

"Okay…I am sorry…" jai complied…bani looked at him…and smiled, dimples adorning her cheeks… jai shook his head…

"Has anyone ever told you that you are really stubborn…" jai commented…bani chuckled...

"I know…" she replied…

"Where were you for the past two days…" she asked, she wanted to tell him that she was searching for him, that she was worried for him, that she wanted to see him…but those words never made it to her lips… …

"Well, I was exploring the village…talking to the people…" jai said…

"Hmm…"

"Heard that you were searching for me…"

"Who…me…no…"

"Really, then how come thakuma told me otherwise…" jai said with a mischievous smile…

"Yes, I was looking for you…so…"

"Why…?"

"I have to tell…"

"Hmm…"

"I will not tell go…"

"Bani…"

"I wanted to thank you…"

"Thank you for what…" jai looked surprised…

"That day you talked about me in front of everyone…"

"Oh that…I was talking about girls in general…but then you also defended me in front of Lolita…"

"I was not defending you, I was also talking about boys in general…" bani stated, jai laughed…abruptly he became serious… …

"But how do you know that I would help others, maybe I would run off…" jai said…

"No way…you just can't do it…" bani said proudly…

"Why can't I do it…I am just like others…"

"No…you won't…I know…"

"What do you know about me bani…that so confidently you stood up for me…?" he looked at her…

"Many things…"

"Like…"

"Like…you are a very nice human being…like you sing very badly…like you only know to give…like you can't even talk to a girl properly…like you don't know what to do after Lolita gets married… …" jai smiled… …

"I do know what to do bani…" jai said…

"You don't…" bani challenged…

"I do…" jai replied intensely… …
XXXX
"So, you want to go to Shantiniketan…" jai asked as they walked back to the house together… …

"Hmm…I had studied there…" bani replied…

"Even I wanted to go there…but…"

"It's a very nice place…"

"Have you seen Tagore…?"

"Once he had come, I just got his glimpse; he really has a long white beard…"

Their voices dimmed as they covered the distance…

From the height of the terrace, Lolita spotted them coming, smiling and laughing together… …
