5 Years Later; Dixit Mansion
Karan Dixit stood just outside thehouse. It was just on seven in the evening and after kissing his eighteen year old daughter Bani good-bye for the evening, he walked to club. This card game he promised himself would be his last, and he knew he could win big, no would win big. Once he did, he would be able to breathe easy, this was all for Bani.
Please forgive me Bani, my dear wife; he thought as he began his walk up the long driveway towards the front door, this is for you.
Before Three years
Meeting Jai Wallia had been a complete accident, the two men literally bumping into each other at a auction. They recognized each other of course as they shared a common property line, but they never had actually exchanged any words before. Until that day, that is.
Karan was not aware of Wallia's personal turmoil, but he was surprised to find that Wallia knew about his lack of money and his offer to stop by Dixit Mansion with a possible solution was, to Karans, a dream come true. However, when Jai Wallia had suggested he buy the Firm and Mansion from Karan and allow Karan and his daughter to remain on the property as renters, Karans refused outright, angry that the man would even make such a suggestion. Perhaps seeing he had gone too far, Jai tried to make amends, or so Karans believed, by offering to let him play in a card game at Club that evening with some of his close friends. Karans, seeing hope at not only winning extra money, but also befriending some wealthy friends…jumped at the chance.
Now, two years later, he found himself standing at Seven Hills as he had done so many times previously, hoping to win some much needed money for his daughter Bani. Her future was at stake here, and this would be his last game; it was in this game he would bet it all.
Wallia's Estate was an impressive estate, one of the best in State. It spanned over forty acres that included a forest, a lake and rolling hills with lush green grass. Jai Wallia's stables boasted some of the finest horses anywhere and each year for many years, he had hosted a three day hunting event for his wealthy friends. That all came to a crashing halt several years ago when Jai Wallia wed, bringing his bride, Pia to his estate. But currently he lives in the Big Mansion in city.
Most people were surprised when Jai married Pia…they seemed such an odd match to their friends, his and hers. He was Modern with Culture, she was Modern …he loved horses and riding, while she did not…he was an early riser…she was rarely up before eleven…he enjoyed his friends…she found them a bore. However, the deed had been done and everyone on both sides made the best of it, thinking that maybe it could be a good union; after all, stranger things have happened. They would unfortunately, be proven wrong in their hopes.
It did not take long for people to realize that Jai was not a happy man. His wife forbade him to have any more hunting, finding it a cruel and useless sport in which not only was an innocent animal frightened mercilessly, but it provided too much of an excuse for Jai and his friends to engage in drinking afterward. They began to argue constantly, she demanding more of his attention, insisting he stay home as a good husband should. Within months of the marriage, when Pia realized that Jai could not be controlled, they had their final argument, she wanting to leave and move back home with her parents and he fed up with her constant unhappiness and demands, told her to go.
He asked for the divorce and Pia asked for the compensation of half of the family wealth. But Jai refused to give for Pia demands. At that time Jai came to know about Pia's illegal relationship with other men. He threatened Pia to give divorce or he will expose her. Pia packed her bags and headed out of their bedroom, walking quickly, her cheeks flushed with anger, Jai following close behind. She reached her car and drive in over speed and hit the lorry much to the horror of Jai looking on. She died instantly and after some investigation, her death was ruled an accident.
Things changed for Jai however, as people wondered if it really was an accident. Pia's brother Rohit, insisted Jai had murdered his wife and demanded justice, talking to anyone who would listen, about his sister's deep unhappiness with Wallia's , accusing her husband of being cold…distant. The district police could not find any evidence of murder and refused to look into the matter further.
The damage however, had been done and Jai Wallia's reputation had taken a direct hit, most of his friends beginning to avoid him, canceling engagements until finally, most had deserted him. He became a loner, his manner towards others turned cold and bitter as he continued to live under a cloud of suspicion. The few friends he did have left, had no idea whether Jai really did kill his wife or not, but that was not for them to judge. If it wasn't for Rohit, Jai Wallia in all likelihood would never have been accused of murder.
The night had proceeded quickly and Karans had only won three hands of the several they had played. He was running out of time and he knew it; the betting was intense amongst all the players with Jai Wallia managing to win most of the hands so far. Karans looked at his cards and knew he had a decent hand, but would it be enough?
"Karans, are you in or out?" Jai said, "We don't have all night."
"I…I…"he muttered, and then he decided to risk it all, for Bani, for her future…she would understand. "I put down his property." Karans said, boldly, hoping he sounded more confident than he felt. Jai Wallia thrived on fear and he had no intention of letting him sense it.
Jai smiled as the other players let out small gasps in surprise.
"Karans…" James said plaintively, "are you sure you want to do that?"
Karans nodded at James, "I am very sure."
"What if you lose?" another player chimed in, "Think of your daughter
"I am thinking of her," Karans explained, "which is why I am doing this."
The other players tried for several minutes to convince Karans to reconsider, but it was all for naught.
"Alright men," Jai said, "time to lay down your cards."
The men, all except for Jai laid their cards on the table. They quickly looked at Karans hand before looking away again. They knew what the outcome would be.
"Decent hand Karans," Jai said grinning, "but not enough to win." He said, tossing his cards on the table.
Karans glanced at Jai's hand and nodded his face ashen. He felt sick. He had let down his daughter and his wife…he and Bani were now homeless…
What am I going to do…how am I going to explain this to Banii? He thought, desperately trying not to cry out loud in front of the men. He continued to stare at the cards, as if willing them to disappear. He had failed, and miserably.
Bani, he thought, I am so very sorry.
Karans was the last to leave, it being now long past midnight, the other players leaving after that last hand…the one that cost him his home. They left wondering how Karans could have been so foolish, yet at the same time feeling incredibly sorry for the older man. He had rendered his daughter homeless in a card game and they knew life for the two would become a great deal more difficult.
"Karans," Jai Wallia called out as Karans prepared to leave Club.
He turned around, hope reflected in his face, Maybe he is not going to take my home…doing the honorable thing…
"I have a proposition for you," Jai said quietly, "I am going to be nice…"
Hope shone in Karans eyes. "Yes Jai?"
"Considering you lost your home to me," Jai began, "and you do have a lovely daughter to consider, I am going to give you a choice…"
"Yes, Jai?"
"Either you give me your home and company, which you lost to me fair and square," he said smirking, "or you give me Bani to become my wife."
