Part 3

-the day they found each other on the opposite side-

'Aunty, woh ghar par hai kya?' Jai stood on their doorstep looking tired, which was natural after wanting to complete three months of pending work in just on day. He had rushed to Bani's house after that, hoping that he could have a talk with her about her marriage.

Kiran let him in, told him to have a seat while she called Bani and would get Jai something to munch on.

'Office se aaye hai na beta?' Kiran asked while she was still busy in the kitchen.

'Yes aunty' Jai said while making himself comfortable on the sofa. Five minutes later Bani had not come down yet to meet him but a plate filled with steaming hot rice, vegetables and a delicious chicken curry was produced in front of him. Jai gratefully kissed Kiran's cheek after which he started to gobble down his food.

Bani came down the stairs when she saw Jai in the living room. The past few minutes she had been bracing herself to face him. She didn't want all the resolves and promises she had made to herself fly out of the window as soon as she saw him. Bani just stood there in a corner watching Jai eat.
'Aap ke office me khaana nahin milta hai kya?' Bani asked mockingly.

Her mother slapped Bani on her arm. 'Kyun tok rahi ho? Let the poor guy eat.'

'Oh of course ma.' Bani said while arching her eyebrow.' Teen mahine se gayab rahe. He might not have eaten well for so many days, hai na. ' Giving Jai an overall glace she continues the sarcastic tone. 'inko dekh ke to lagta nahin ki he hasn't been eating well.'

Kiran glared at her daughter. Jai laughed seeing that but promised himself to hit the gym the following day. He knew Bani would be angry at him. the conversation they had yesterday was a dead giveaway. Still Jai needed to get this stupid idea about her stupid plan to get married to a stupid guy for even more stupid reasons, out of her head. Jai wolfed down his food, gulped down a bit of water and brought his plate to the kitchen. There he kissed his aunt on her cheek again, thanking her for dinner. It earned him a heart-warming smile.
'can I take your sarphiri daughter out for a while? We'll be back in a hour or two.'

'Of course.' Kiran answered while laughing. 'But make her call when you will be running late, warna aapke uncle pareshaan ho jaayenge. '
' Sure auntie. Say hi to uncle for me.' Jai said while exiting the kitchen and walking towards the door. On his way out he grabbed Banis wrist, who was leaning against the door post watching Jai and her mother.

Leave my hand!! Bani screamed at Jai. she tried to wriggle out of his grip but he dragged her out of the house. Jai left Bani's hand when they reached his car. He walked around the car to the driver's seat.

'get in.

Bani stood there stubbornly. Her arms were crossed in front of her chest.

Come on, don't overdo the angry act Bani. Jai teased her. Bani glared at Jai, the twinkle in his eyes she normally loved to see, were so irritating at times like these. Bani sat in the car next to Jai.

where do you want to go?' Jai asked her. Bani ignored his question and got busy with fastening her seatbelt. Jai found this very amusing. He grinned and pressed the accelerator.

Jai and Bani were sitting opposite each other. She was trying to avoid all the questions about her marriage, cleverly steering everything in that direction off. Jai was bursting with questions, well actually thing to say to Bani to straighten her mind, but he was trying to compose himself so he could try and have a civilized conversation.

'so. care to tell me what this is about?' Jai asked her.

'what?' She tried to ask as innocently as possible.

'Your wedding.'

'No I don't want to talk about it.' Bani said

'Well, you are going to have to! Tell me Bani, kuch dino me aisa kya badla hai that you are going to have an arranged marriage?'
'Kuch nahin badla hai. ' Bani said, staring at Jai. Its just high time i get married.
High time?! You are just 25' the volume of Jai's voice turned a bit louder.

'You got married around the same age!' Bani said, matching Jais tone.

Exasperated Jai put the palm of his hands again the surface of the table with a loud bang.
There is a difference Bani! you know that didn't work our. And this marriage of yours also doesn't have a lot of ground to succeed. Then why are you doing this?'

'Why are you convinced that this wont work out Jai? Do you want it to fail? ' Bani hissed at him. 'Mai jo kar rahi hoon apni marzi se kar rahi hoon. Aur is desh me karoron log hai jo arranged marriage kar rahe hai.I am no exception.

'Woh log kar rahe hai to karne do unko! But you always wanted something different!' Jai answered. Why are you going back on that now?

'I am not going back on anything Jai!' Bani said. 'I am just doing this because it came on my path and it feels okay because it makes my family happy! That is all that matters to me!'

No Bani. it's not all that matter! What about your happiness, your future?' Jai asked her. 'Have you met him? Tum jaanti kya ho uske baare me?'

'Yes I have met him.' Bani answered him. 'accha larka hai, accha kamaata hai.

He talks nicely, politely to me and my family!

Jai's forehead frowned in disbelieve.

'Just because he talks nicely to you, you have decided to get married to him?!

'Yes!'

'That's it?! kuch aur jaanne ki zaroorat nahin hai? And why the hell are getting so damn defensive!!'

'Because you are attacking me!' Bani said while crossing her arms in front of her chest.

'Paagal ho rahi ho tum Bani, you are going insane!!! Jai shouted leaning back in his chair.

Bani shoved her chair back. I am going home. Mujhe yahaan nahin rehna.SHe stood up and was about to walk away when she heard Jais command infuriated her even more.

Sit down BAni!'

'Why?!' she raised her voice again. ' So you can question everything?! Tab kahan the jab mujhe yeh faisla lena tha! Ek bhi call ka, ek bhi message ka jawaab nahin diya tha! Ab aaye hai jab sab tay ho gaya hai! Why weren't you here when I needed you?!!! And when you got here you don't even ask me how I am doing, no! You question every decision I had to make on my own!! You are not the only one with a life and I cant just sit around and wait till Your Highness comes up and will give a stamp of approval on everything I do!! I am doing this because my parents want me to!!! And for once cant you be happy for me?!!!' Bani continued still standing at the table.

'Why should I be happy for you Bani?' Jai hissed in a deep baritone.
'Because I was happy for you when you decided to get married.' Bani whispered.

'Even though I knew you were making a mistake, but you were too happy to listen to anything. And you definitely were not listening to me. Why should I listen to you now Jai? Aap ne to kabhi mujhe apna samjha hi nahin, ab mai aapki baat kyun maanu? ' Bani picked up her purse, took some money out of it and left it on the table before she rushed out of the restaurant leaving Jai behind with the rest of the guests who had been witnesses to their bickering.

ooohhhh... at last bani broke the pot... now let me see whether jai gets some sense...

Oooohhhh!!! Someone's got a sharp tongue. Bravo Bani!!!!! I loved that!!!! Though it was short but very forthcoming, I wish it was a scene so I could watch jai's million dollar expression, I guess I can do the imagining!!!
