-The day(s) her heart broke, bit by bit.-
Bani flung herself on her bed throwing her phone somewhere. She didn't care where. Without wanting to cry, she felt tears on her cheeks. How dare he! He called her up and demanded an explanation! How long had he been available in the past so many months? Where was he when she needed him? How many calls had he returned when he was out there in his busy life, busy with his business, living his high-fi, jet setting ways? Even now he had not called to ask why she had called him so much in the past six months. She had wanted his advice, his guidance, maybe his reassurance....... a declaration of......? No, skip the last thought. She had only wanted his guidance, his advice and his reassurance. But he wasn't there. Not when she had needed him. And even now, when she had made the hardest decision in her life by herself, he had only called her to ask Bani about her wedding. The audacity of the man!
Why should she tell him now? Did he tell her when he was getting engaged? No, he had not. He just e-mailed her he was bringing home a surprise. Bani had flown in the sky, heaven and everything around that, that day and the days that followed. She hadn't seen him since that summer. Along with the rest of the family she sped to the airport and waited anxiously for him to come. Deep down inside Bani knew why she was feeling this way but she had not wanted to admit it. Not to herself, not to anyone else. Until Bani saw Jai come out of the terminal in those defining long strides of him, tugging his suitcases behind him. He took his sunglasses off and revealed black eyes that scanned the crowds and rested on his family, and then her. Those eyes twinkled in recognition before he left the handle of his suitcase, waved at them and then pulled a beautiful woman next to him, embracing her sideways. It was Bani's nineteenth birthday that day. From flying on the seventh heaven she crashed down with a brain numbing speed. But not one muscle in her face gave her away. Bani smiled that day. And she kept smiling.
She smiled when Jai got engaged, when the sangeet was held and when his haldicermony was conducted. She had danced in a maddening frenzy, congratulated the couple and smiled, smiled till her jaw hurt so bad that it had matched another pain she had felt inside. She felt shattered, but even then.....she smiled. She smiled when she went shopping with Jai's family to buy the gifts for Jai's bride. She smiled when Jai dragged her to choose a mangalsutra and a weddingpresent for his would be wife. She had smiled when he told her to choose a honeymoon destination. She had even smiled when Jai's mother had asked her to decorate his room when in fact she just wanted to run away, and she had smiled when she had to make the garlands for the couple. Afterwards Bani had cried her heart out, but in front everyone she had smiled and been happy, not for the rest but for her friend. Because he deserved to be happy whenever he wanted to, with whomever he wanted to. She had been mad at herself when his marriage didn't work out because she feared it had been her tears that had flown freely on her pillow every night during that period, and the one tear that fell on the rose she had place on his nightstand on his wedding night, that had jinxed Jai's marriage. And he had told her now that her marriage might not work? Why couldn't he be happy for her. Just like she had been for him? Moron!
She never demanded that he felt the same about her as she felt about him, she only wanted him to be there for her. support her. Why couldn't he understand that? He just called and demanded an explanation. Well he could wait till hell would freeze over because she was done explaining. Jai never explained anything, he just announced his decisions and demanded like he had every right to. And she, Bani Dixit, the most stupid girl, turned into the most stupid women on the planet and gave him that right whenever Jai needed her and she ran to him. it had been like this for ever. He called, she ran. She wasn't running to him now. No way!
Bani buried her face in her pillow and curled her legs under her body trying to be invisible. like she had been in Jai's life. The invisible best friend. Now she was done being the friend. She was a daughter too and she was going to fulfil those responsibilities now. She was going to marry her uncle's nephew as her parents had wished. Everything for their happiness. And for them she was going to make sure that this marriage would work.
'Bani!!!' she heard her mother call for her. At least she didn't lie completely to Jai anymore. her mother had called for her, but not on the time she had ended the call. Bani quickly wiped her tears, washed her face and ran down the stairs to see a guest in their living room.
'Aunty!!" she screamed and hugged Jai's mother, Krishna. She was still as beautiful as Bani could remember years ago. Only the vibrant colours of her clothes were replaces by silk pastels because uncle had hated white on his wife. And his wife was the last person who had wanted to upset him even when he wasn't there anymore. Bani made Jai's mother sit down.
'Maine Jai ko card de diya hai. Teen mahine baad aaya hai, he must be in a shock.'
Bani's mother entered with a tray and drinks. 'Kiran, jo bhi karna ho bata dena. My daugther is getting married, dhoom dhaam se karungi!
'Are nahin didi.' Bani's mother protested while pouring tea. 'We will manage. Aur abhi to ek mahina baki hai. Lekin kuch kaam hoga to zaroor bata dungi.' She handed Krishna a cup with a charming smile. The smile Bani had inherited. Bani always hoped that she would get her mother's genes to age like her. She didn't know how she did it, but at the age of 48 she didn't have one wrinkle that made her face look less attractive. Just the few lines around her eyes which showed when she laughed. The only thing that could give away her age were her carefully dyed hair.
The two ladies proceeded to talk about the wedding. Bani's mother showed the veil Bani would be wearing, the veil she had made when Bani was just a girl. Bani had seen it before but somehow it made her feel......scared and she choked up. She was wrapped in a hug by Krishna. 'What happened? Why are you crying?' she asked while stroking Bani's hair.
'I don't know. ' Bani answered in between sobs. ' aaj rone ka man kar raha hai.'
While being comforted by her mother and a mother figure, who explained this as pre-wedding jitters, Bani sobbed with her head on Krishna's lap, knowing that her crying had nothing to do with pre-wedding jitters. Not in the way Kiran and Krishna thought.
