Chapter 11

Jai got up, the wind was picking up and he should retire in bed, he got up to close the window, saw a figure standing in the opposite window, looking at the sky, it was Pia no doubt, she was still awake, her eyes, her words are very different from the Pia whose image he had in mind, after Ranveer's death he had gone into the flat he shared with Pia, there were several photographs of them, Jai had good look at them, her hair was different then, but women change their hairstyles often, otherwise she looked exactly the same, the same ? No…something was different somewhere….what can it be…as he closed the glass window Pia turned hearing the sound, they looked at each other, it was dark but their silhouette was well visible, he would feel her eyes on him, he could see her hurtful eyes…suddenly Pia pulled the curtains closed…Jai Walia sighed….he ran his fingers through his hair then a thought crossed him…Hemant? Hemant knew Pia…..though he never liked the man but he is sure with a bit of money Hemant will give some more details of Pia to him….

Hemant Nerula could not believe his luck, after all these years of trying to get Jai Walia's attention, he at last got it….Mr Walia wants to meet you at his office at 4.00 p.m. sharp his secretary informed not bothering to find out if he is free at 4.00 p.m. but then Hemant will let that go and be available at 4 p.m….the seed he had sowed now seems to be giving fruits….

Hemant had always dreamt high in life but was too lazy for hard work. Being a smooth talker he made friends easily and rich spoilt brats were of his special likings. Soon he became close to Ranveer, being a relative helped to certain degree and Ranveer loved outdoor games, to get Ranveer's attention Hemant introduced Pia, a fun loving girl who led life in a fast track, his friend's friend…like Ranveer she too was a sportswomen and two struck a friendship soon….Ranveer moved in with Pia into a flat with Hemant arranged for him to buy, he made quite a good money through the deal, Hemant now wanted some more money, when the Rakhi case came up….Ranveer knew Rakhi from some other source and Rakhi turned out to be a over smart foolish girl…Hemant instigated Pia to do something similar, initially Pia was not agreeing, she was having too much fun and then Ranveer was kind on her, giving her expensive presents, good clothes etc etc., but after Rakhi's incident, Ranveer was put onto a leash by his uncle, Ranveer was asked to behave and money was not so much forthcoming, Hemant again instigated Pia….kuch karo before the bird flies away, I will get you money don't worry, Pia agreed, they became partners, she became pregnant, they hatched plans how to get money, how much of money will be enough for them and where Pia will go for abortion, everything was moving as per plan except Jai Walia was playing hard, refusing to open his fist and suddenly Pia changed her track, she vanished…..

Bani appeared for breakfast during her usual time, Aditya and Dadi were present, they looked a lot better….Bani served them with their breakfast as usual and sat down to have hers when Jai Walia walked in….

Bani frowned, he never had breakfast in dining room, he had his breakfast in his room after his gym……, areh Jai ayo ayo….. he sat at the head of the table

As Bani was sitting to have hers, Dadi said, Pia jara Jai ki breakfast le ayo, dekho Tony ne bana diya hoga….

Bani got up and went into the kitchen Tony was giving finishing touches to it, fruits, cereals, eggs, juice it was a large breakfast for a man who ate only two rotis for dinner….seeing her he smiled and handed it over…I think Sir is not wanting to miss out on the fun, everyday while getting ready he does hear you all having breakfast together….Tony commented….Bani smiled, it is the first time after coming to this house, Tony commented on something personal….

Bani served Jai….she could feel he watching her closely and then she went back to her place….

As Bani bit her toast, she heard Jai clearing his throat and saying I run some charities, one such charitable school is having its sports today and I have to be there for the prize distribution around 1200 o'clock followed by lunch invitation, I was thinking if you can come along Pia, it will be nice…..

Bani looked up….me? I mean I …matlab we are yet to announce our marriage in public…..

Why you have forgotten about the party…..

Not really…but that was for very close friends and relations…..

Jai smiled, yes and close enough to help you to announce it to the world…..

Bani looked towards Dadi……

Dekh beti, Riya ko tu le ja sakti hai lekin agar chhor kar jayegi mai tujhe dubara shiakayat ka mauka nehi dungi….

Ha Pia I promise you, ma and I will take care of Riya incase you wish to keep her with us….

Bani looked at Jai Walia, he stared back, what was his intention, his opinion about Pia is very contradictory, Bani waited for him to speak….I will not mind if you bring Riya along…he replied at last…..

Bani sighed, it is upto her now….when do I have to get ready…..

It is 9 a.m now, you get ready we will leave by 10 /10.30 it will take an hour to be there, since it is a school we should be punctual…..

Dadi aap ayiye mere saath, mai apko jara Riya ka feed samjha du….Bani spoke to Dadi who gave a huge grin in turn….

Bani dressed with care, she did not bring much clothes with her but had packed 2-3 saris belonging to her mother, she took out the printed silk, designed and block printed by Kiran herself, it was elegant and perfect for day use, Bani quickly wrapped it around, with a combination of maroon, black, green and mustard, Bani put on a maroon bindi, pinned her hair at the back, looking herself in the mirror for sometime, she sat down on the stool ….a bit hesitantly she opened the drawer of the dresser, the mangalsutra was there, she had wanted to return it but Dadi said keep it beta, shaadi toh ki ho, khabi kabar pahen la, hume khush kar dena, though Dadi never questioned about the arrangement of their marriage but Bani felt she did not like the same….Bani felt the mangalsutra with her finger for some time then took it out to wear it …..

Jai stared at his wife from time to time, elegant and smiling she was a sure shot winner amongst the parents and school authorities. When he introduced her, gracefully she did her namaste, took interest while the principal took them around, appreciated the card and flowers given by the children, as Airhostess maybe she is trained in poise but what struck Jai that she was showing genuine interest, in the car she had sat with her face turned away from him but here she was a different woman, they posed for photographs, held hands while forming a circle to participate in the song conducted by the children for uniting the world….as they got in the car, Bani waved at the group who was seeing them off.

I will get down in the office, the car will drop you home…..Bani turned hearing Jai's voice….she nodded her head….the man who was always frowning and scowling turned out to be a different person, he smiled, laughed, opened his shoes and jacket and participated in parents' tug of war, you should be in practice, said one father pulling him up from his chair, Jai took it sportingly, he did not grumble or scowl…being a charitable school the parents belonged to lower middle class, other than his dress, which was expensive, he mixed around with them, asked them what kind of work they do, some he knew personally, showed great concern on rising prices of commodities, he even said how it is affecting his business, in easy language he made them understand its chain effect…..as Bani heard him, she knew he was not boasting but trying to come down to the level of the people you were listening to him in rapt attention….ha shayad I do not have to worry about my day to day food lekin mujhe hamesha dar laga rehta hai, one wrong move from my part and I will be responsible for so many other people's jobs, their family and livelihood…

They sat in silence, Bani relaxed, she could still feel his warm hand clasping her palm firmly as they sang the unity song….his jacket touched her arms, he did not move away, Bani too sat hearing him speak on the mobile telling someone I am a bit busy now can you call after half an hour after I reach office…..after disconnecting the phone he sat in silence, neither talking nor moving away…..

How…how long have you been supporting this school, Bani asked at last…..

For 10 years now, the children make alongwith their teacher were standing in front of a restaurant appealing for donations, I was entering it to make one of my life's biggest deals….I promised them if I am successful I will support their school as long as I live, they wished me luck and waited outside till I signed and finalized the deal……

Bani took a deep breath, so he is keeping a promise, he seems to be a man with integrity but then how was Ranveer? Aditya too was a gentleman who looked soft and loving….Did Ranveer not get anything from his uncle and father? What kind of man was he, couldn't he influence Pia to marry him for the sake of his child…..remembering Pia, Bani sighed she could be very obstinate at times, beyond logic and understanding, she refused to accommodate anyone….

What is the matter Pia….why are you taking such long sighs…..

Well I was thinking of P….I mean if my parents were alive today how would they react to my situation today…..

Well not very nicely I am sure, maybe you would not have become an unmarried mother and married the uncle of your dead boyfriend to get a name for your daughter….

Startled Bani looked at him, he was clenching his jaws and looking out….

Even if it is a marriage of convenience, the thought of marrying his nephew's spouse is something not going down well with him it seems…..

Jai's office arrived, he picked up his laptop, thanks Pia, thanks for accompanying me to the school….as he closed the door, Bani heard someone calling out, just in time Jai Mama, I hope you remember I have an appointment with you…..The car drove away, Bani turned to see Hemant Nerula walking with Jai towards the lifts….
