Bani slept the whole journey, resting against Jai. He smiled as he remembered their previous trips to Goa. Goa was where he knew somewhere that Bani was the one for him. It was where he had let his guard down with Bani, knowing there was something about her. His eyes travelled down to her stomach. She was still growing in these last couple months, but she looked beautiful. He caressed her stomach softly, they had come so far and been through so much. And now, not only were their personal dreams being fulfilled but professional as well.
Once they landed, they headed to the hotel to freshen up and quickly left to see the progress of the hotel. He snickered as Bani wore a hardhat at the construction site, looking adorable with her pregnant belly and a bright yellow hat. But despite visiting the site, he didn't allow her to go up to any other level of the building as construction was still going on. She didn't argue with him, knowing it wasn't very safe.
He watched her as she discussed with the architect and interior designer, scanning her choices, and noting any corrections. They had made a sample of one of the rooms and showed it to them, with bated breath that it was to their liking. She saw it and was mesmerized. It was gorgeous and elegant. They gave the couple a few minutes to look it through.
She smiled as she looked around, feeling very content.
"You did a beautiful job, Bani… Its going to be magnificent," he whispered to her. She looked up at him with her twinkling eyes and nodded, clearly at a loss for words. She held her hand out, and he enclosed it in his palm. Together they walked around, admiring the dcor and the view of the ocean.
"Im so proud of you, Bani…" He turned her around and placed his palms on her cheeks. "I couldn't have done this without you…" He leaned in and kissed her softly. He smiled against her lips, then kissed her again with a little more passion before he pulled her in and she snuggled against his chest while he wrapped his arms around her. Bani felt her heart beating fast, but so safe and secure in his arms.
"Ahem…"
They turned around seeing the architect, obviously feeling embarrassed for barging in on the couple during such an intimate moment.
"Woh.. Mr. Walia, just needed some signatures. Im sorry for the disturbance," He said sheepishly.
Jai smiled and reviewed the documents while Bani walked around again, making sure of what she wanted to change. She rested her hand on her stomach, exhaling. Her apprehensions for this place had subsided, it was truly a work of art.
Since the launch was the next evening, Bani made sure to keep that evening free for themselves. After heading back to the hotel after sometime, Jai made sure Bani took a nap, as being on her feet and running around all day was not what he wanted for her. She needed her rest and Bani agreed since he allowed her on this trip. A little while later, she woke up with the afternoon sun about to set.
"Jai?" She called out.
"Yes, sweetheart?" He called back to her.
She followed hs voice, and saw him sitting on the couch with his files. He smiled at her. "Good afternoon… Sleep well?"
"Hmm…" She nodded. "I forgot to mention to you… I made dinner reservations." He helped ease her into the chair and looked at her curiously.
"Dinner reservations? Bani, there is a meeting with the construction manager. I made the appointment when you were asleep," he said apologetically. "But I suppose I can reschedule…" He fished in his pocket for his phone.
"No, its ok. We came here for work… We can have dinner another time." Sure she felt bad, but she felt bad for not having disclosed what her plans were.
"Im really sorry, Sweetheart…" Jai said kneeling in front of her. She touched his cheek softly and kissed his forehead.
"No need to be sorry… So when do you have to leave?"
"Not me… 'we'. Im not leaving you alone, especially in this condition. Besides, you are just as much of a part of this as me. So go freshen up, we have to leave in about a half hour." With that he helped her up, watching her head to the washroom, before packing away his things.
She came out adjusting her sari over her belly and he simply smiled at her. "You look more and more beautiful everyday, Mrs. Walia."
She blushed, wanting to change the subject before her cheeks reddened even more. "Chale?" He held his arm out for her, and she linked hers through his as they headed out.
***
They entered a quaint but formal restaurant, and the host immediately seated them in a secluded spot. Bani looked around at the elegant surroundings, the aroma of delectable food was all around her.
"Hungry?" Jai asked with a smirk.
"More than you know…" She mumbled, wishing she could eat right away, but she knew that was impolite. "So… when is he getting here?"
"When is who getting here?" Jai responded while looking at his menu.
"The construction manager.. who else?"
"Oh him! He's not…"
"Hes not what…"
Jai set down his menu and moved right next to her, leaning in so he was mere inches away from her. "What I mean is.. He isn't coming, nor was he ever coming. Meaning tonight, its just you… and me…" With that he covered her lips with his own with a tender kiss. He waited for a moment until she realized that he had pulled a fast one on her.
A slow smile crept upon her face. "So sneaky…"
"You mean so smart…" He smiled at her. "You aren't the only one who remembered…"
She stared into his eyes, feeling the love and warmth coming from them. He took her hands into his own and leaned in, resting his forehead against hers.
"Happy First Anniversary, Bani…" he whispered. Just then the waiter came out with a petite chocolate cake, lined with strawberries and deep dark chocolate frosting, and a single candle at the top.
"Congratulations Sir, Maam…" The waiter stated before he walked away.
Together they blew out the candle, and Bani couldn't wait to dig in. Jai watched her for a moment, savoring the taste of the rich chocolate. "Mmm… Jai, this is just…" She took another bite and smiled with her eyes closed. "Perfect…" He kept watching her eat till he finally cleared his throat.
"Bani, you mind if I have a bite? Im kind of hungry."
Bani looked at him the the fork in her mouth, apologetically. "Sorry.. Ive been hogging up all the cake. I didn't even realiz-"
"Shhh… You don't need to apologize…" he took her fork and tried the cake. "You're right.. this IS good…"
After they finished their meal, Bani looked at him with a sparkle in her eye. "Well since the surprise is out in the open.. I guess I can give this to you know…" She dug in her purse for a second and fished out box.
He kissed her cheek and opened the box, revealing a watch. "Wow.. Bani its beautiful. Thank you so much!" He kissed her lips gently and before she knew it, he was clasping the watch onto his wrist.
"Which reminds me.. I have something for you, as well…"
He took out a pouch from his pocket and handed it to her.
From it, she took out two antique jadau bangles, laced with uncut white diamonds. "Jai, this is too much…"
"Actually, they were my mothers…"
"But you've given me her jewelery before…"
"I know.. but I know you will cherish this more knowing that it belonged to Maa, more than anything else.. You will hold it as important as I do…" Jai caressed her cheek with his fingers.
She nodded and without waiting, Jai slipped the kangan on her wrists, fingering them delicately. "Beautiful…." He whispered to her.
Bani thought back to all he has given her, giving her that much importance to trust her with his family heirlooms. She frowned for a moment, not to go unnoticed by Jai.
"Whats wrong, sweetheart? Did I say something?"
"I just realized the only thing I have ever given you is this watch… But you always think of me…"
Jai smiled. "Bani, you don't even understand what you have given me… A family. You gave me Neha… you… and now this baby…" His palm rested on her stomach. He smiled looking down, the excitement of their future child evident in his eyes. "Whatever I have given you, could never match that… There is no monetary value to our family.. because every part of it is simply priceless. Every moment I spend with you, or Neha.. and soon the baby…"
She looked up at him with tears brimmed in her eyes.
"You brought me back to life…" He leaned in and whispered against her lips. With that he kissed her, not caring about their surroundings. He kissed her so passionately, that it took her by surprise. "You are my greatest gift…" His voice shook with emotion and Bani rested her head against his forehead.
A tear fell down Bani's cheek. It left a blazing trail, and Jai quickly kissed it away. "Lets go back…" Bani nodded and together they left the restaurant, holding each other close in their arms.
***
Bani waited for Jai to finish getting ready for bed. She was already lying there, with her eyes closed, but still awake, her hands moving on her belly. The baby seemed to be awake. She smiled as she felt it move a bit. Jai walked out, but Bani was oblivious to the sound of the door opening. He watched her serene smile, wanting to know what she was experiencing. Tossing his towel to the side, he sat on the bed, keeping cheek next to her tummy.
Bani's eyes fluttered open and she saw him, with a childish smile on his face. "Hellooo…. Can you hear me? Its me- Papa!" He moved his hand, rubbing it softly. "Hmm? Whats that?"
Bani looked at him curiously, as she ran her fingers through his hair.
"Oh.. you cant wait to come out and meet me? Papa is excited to meet you too!" He felt a kick and immediately his eyes brightened. He pressed a long kiss on her stomach. Resting his cheek again, he smiled. "Neha? Shes excited to be a big sister! Your didi is waiting for you to come and play with her…."
"What about Mama?" Bani said ruffling his hair.
"Hmmm What about Mama? Acchaa… Ok.. It's a secret between you and me…." Jai grinned at Bani, who was smiling.
"Badmash…"
"Me or baby?"
"You…" She pinched his nose. He climbed up next to her, watching her yawn.
"Tired?" He stroked her head softly.
"A little… I hope everything goes well tomorrow…"
"Of course it will.. All that work you put in, you saw how beautiful it was today. Its just a matter of time when its completed now…"
Bani stifled a yawn. Without any words, Jai pulled a blanket over her and wrapped his arm around her, resting his hand on her belly. She turned her face to him, smiling through her sleepy eyes. The love of her life. The man who loved her more than this world. She never thought, or even imagined she would find him. She moved her hand up and caressed his cheek as he looked into her his eyes. Smiling he leaned over and gave her a soft kiss, then whispered 'I love you…' making her feel content inside. Her eyes closed slowly still turned towards him, and eventually her hand rested on top of his, feeling their babys slight movements as they fell asleep.
***
All of the next morning had become a whirlwind for Jai and Bani. They had reached the hall early to make sure all the details were taken care of. Jai had bothered Bani about going back to take a nap before the evening, but she had become upset as there was so much work left to be done. Jai apologized by pulling ears and giving her a sad face, something she simply couldn't resist.
Finally the sun was about to set, and they returned to their hotel room to change for the evening. Bani had laid out Jai's pitch black suit on the bed while he showered. She was pretty tired, yet at the same time she couldn't wait for the evening. All the work they had put into the hotel was finally coming alive. She could feel the anticipation and it made her excited.
Jai walked out with a towel around his waist and one drying his hair. He stopped and smiled at Bani who was smiling at herself while choosing her clothes from her suitcase.
Dropping the extra towel to the side, he walked behind her and wrapped his arms around her. "What are you thinking?"
"Jai! You are all wet! You're hair is dripping all over me!" She turned around seeing him smile at her.
"So?" He said slyly. "You need to shower anyways… unless you need some help?" He traced his finger along her collarbone, and she just shyly smiled.
"Jai…"
"Bani…."
"Chodo…" She pushed him back lightly, while giggling. She took her clothes and headed towards the washroom.
A little while later, she emerged wearing a crimson red sari, with a delicate border of black beads, that shimmered silver in the light. She adjusted the sari as best she could, and Jai just turned and looked at her, realizing how radiant she looked.
She noticed his eyes on her, but didn't heed much attention. "I hope this fits allright. Di brought it for me. Its been harder to find clothes that can these days…" She looked in the mirror and contined to adjust her sari, so she was relatively covered.
Jai silently walked behind her and turned her around. Without uttering a single word, he leaned in and snaked his arm around her waist, giving her a slow sensuous kiss. "You look breathtaking…. Its perfect on you." Before she could respond, he kissed her again. "I cant tell you enough, just how beautiful you are. My whole world stops when you come into the room, and all I can see is you…" He whispered into her ear. Bani breathed deeply and moved her hands around his neck.
"I have an idea…" Jai moved his hand along her back. "Lets skip tonight.. we'll stay in…"
Bani laughed. "And skip our own event? Im sure we could…" She joked.
"Im serious.. They wont miss us…" He whispered as he brought her close. Just then they heard a noise.
Thump thump
Bani smiled to herself as Jai reluctantly let her go. He wanted to spent a little time with her but he knew it was important. He stopped at the door when he heard a familiar voice.
"Maaamaaa! Hawooo!" They heard a tiny thumping noise against the door, and Jai smiled to himself, hurrying to open the lock. He opened it and there was Neha smiling up at her Papa. She ran inside without a moments hesitation, and saw her Mama standing there with open arms and a smile on her face. "Mama! Mamamamamamaa"! Bani engulfed Neha into her arms, and kissed her cheeks happily.
"My angel! What are you doing here?"
Jai smiled with his hands in his pockets, watching mother and daughter. With another slight knock on the door, Adi peeked in with a smile.
"Hi! There she is! She started knocking on all of the doors trying to find you.. I think you might have a few angry neighbors here," he chuckled.
"Adi Jiju? What are you doing here?"
"Jai didn't tell you?" Adi looked at Jai who was grinning. "The whole family is here!"
"It was a surprise for her…" He smiled at his wife.
"I thought everyone was too busy to make it!" Bani sounded genuinely surprised. She was happy the whole family was there for such a major event. Neha fidgeted out of her arms and ran straight to Jai.
"Papa up!" She pointed up to the ceiling and he brought her up into his arms.
"Ok, Jai. We're almost done getting ready. We'll meet you downstairs." Adi smiled then left to his room. Jai set Neha down as she ran around the room and Bani walked up to him, leaning upwards to kiss his cheek softly.
"Thank you for bringing everyone here… It means the world to me to have everyone here." He wrapped his arms around her, and suddenly felt someone patting his leg.
"No! My uggie!"
"You want a huggie? Ok!" He brought Neha up in between them and they both kissed her cheeks making her giggle excitedly.
***
The venue was crowded, many looking at Jai and Bani admiringly and many well-wishers coming to greet them on not only the hotel but the baby as well. Neha tagged along behind the rest of the family, with Jigyasa watching over her as it was such a big night for Jai and Bani. Bani turned around to see Neha with a large smile on her face, and wearing a pink party dress that Jai had specially bought for her.
Neha let go of Jigyasa and waddled her way to Jai with an excited expression. "Pinches!" She said happily.
Jai, who had been talking to an associate, looked down to see his little girl looking at him.
"Pinches!"
The associate looked at Jai strangely for a moment, when Jai picked her up and gave her a kiss on the cheek. "Yes, you are my little princess…" The associate smiled, wondering why he hadn't figured it out. Setting Neha down, and sending her off to play with Raima, he took Bani around the room, introducing her, and walking with Mohan as well to talk about the current hotel project.
Bani was listening Jai talk about the future projects, when she felt someone hug her from behind. She wanted to jump for a second, but then she realized who was there behind her.
"Sonali!" Bani exclaimed, giving her a warm welcoming hug.
"Bani! You look… You are simply glowing! A little birdie told me you two were expecting a bundle of joy… but I didn't expect so soon!"
Bani blushed and glanced at Jai from the corner of her eye. He was trying to wrap up that conversation so he could join Bani.
"Jai definitely is taking care of you," Sonali said happily. "You look so happy."
"And I don't?" Jai said putting his arm around Bani, and flashing a smile towards his old friend. She laughed and they hugged.
"Ranvijay didn't come?"
"He couldn't make it. A sudden trip abroad, but he made sure that I didn't miss this. Afterall, you two put a lot of time into it."
They chatted for sometime, with promises to meet each other again in the evening, and parted ways. Masi had called Bani, giving her a plate of food, and chiding her gently for not eating properly that evening. Jigyasa, Masi and Rano were all feeding her different foods. Jai looked at them from afar, seeing them take care of Bani so lovingly. He smiled to himself. There was no doubt that marrying Bani was the best decision of his life.
He laughed when he saw Bani, whose mouth was already full, being fed more by Masi and giving him a pleading look for help. He wanted to help her, but he knew that he was supposed to be engaged in a serious discussion in front of him.
Finally Bani had managed to get away. As she greeted people around the room, she felt a wave of discomfort, as if someone was looking at her. She felt inside it wasn't Jai, and when she turned around she saw Pia looking at her, while with Pushkar. Pia reluctantly walked towards her, increasingly making Bani nervous. How had she come here?
Jai turned to find Bani, as he hadn't seen her in some time. When his eyes found her, the expression on her face had him curious and a little worried. He followed the direction of her eyes and realized why she seemed so disturbed. Making his way through the crowd, as casually and swiftly as he could, he walked towards her.
Bani turned around to walk away, but Pia caught her arm.
"Bani, wait…"
Bani turned around, slowly, pulling her arm to release herself from Pia. Pia glanced down at Bani's stomach, then reluctantly looked at Pushkar, who nodded at her.
"I.. I wanted to… ap.. apologize…" Pia hesitated. She looked down and away from Bani, who stood rooted at her spot. By this time, Jai had also come and was standing behind his wife, wondering what Pia had to say.
"I have been seeing a therapist. And I think… we think… it is helping." She looked at Pushkar, who gave her a faint smile.
Bani looked at Jai, who simply stared at Pia with an expressionless face.
"I hurt you two a lot… I realize now how much I could have hurt you," Pia swallowed the lump in her throat. "I do not even want to imagine what would have happened had…" She stopped, unable to finish that thought. "But I am thankful I have Pushkar, who has not once stopped supporting me, just as the two of you have supported one another."
Bani looked at Jai, then at Pia. A strange weight seemed to be lifting off of Pia's shoulder right in front of their eyes.
"Please forgive me. It's the only way I could even think of forgiving myself…" Pia said quietly, folding her hands in front of Jai and Bani. There was a long standing silence between them, despite the noise of the room it still felt extremely quiet.
"Its ok, Pia…." Bani whispered after some time. Pia looked at her, and Bani simply nodded with her simple smile. "We all need to move on…"
Although for a few moments it was awkward, Bani was somewhat relieved and still happy for Pia that she was able to come out of her shell. She excused herself and walked out to the veranda for some fresh air. She felt strange that Pia apologized. Just seeing her, though, made her feel slightly uncomfortable, but she knew the right thing to do was forgive her. She was not sure if she could trust her, but the least she could do was give her a fresh start to her life. That made Bani feel a little bit better. Jai followed her out, watching her take a deep breath. She rubbed her lower back with her hands. He frowned slightly and walked behind her.
"You ok?" He took over the light backrub she had been giving herself. "Do you want to head back to the hotel?"
Bani smiled at his concern. She shook her head and turned around, a slight confusion playing in her eyes.
"Was it something Pia said?"
She again shook her head. "I just hope she starts afresh. I just felt strange seeing her again. I hope she is able to move on…"
"You did good, Bani…." He rested his forehead against hers. "You did the right thing. If I were in your place, I don't know if I could have done the same… But I know you were right to do so…"
"Is your back hurting, Bani?" He asked softly. She smiled at him and touched his cheek with her hand.
"No.. Im fine…"
"Hmm… If you need to sit, Bani, then please do… I want you to be as comfortable as possible," He brought her into his arms, his hand rubbing her back softly.
"There you two are!" Ranveer said smiling at the happy couple. "Everything is ok?"
"Just fine…" Bani smiled.
"Mamaji, they are calling you inside…"
Jai approached the stage as he had been briefed that they were wanting him to introduce the hotel. With paparazzi clicking photographs all over, he walked up the podium ready.
"Good evening! I welcome you all tonight to this momentous event. After months of planning and hard work, I am pleased to unveil tonight a project that not only my team, but Mr. Khandewal's team have worked so hard to bring alive over the past year. So much hard work and dedication has gone into this project, that it has become one of my most prized accomplishments." He beamed proudly.
"Ish Papa!" He heard a familiar squeal. "Papa hawoo!"
Jai turned slightly red and looked down trying not to smile. He could hear Masi trying to quiet her down. The audience whispered, wondering where this voice was coming from. Bani, who was standing just below the podium looked at Jai, and nodded to continue after a moment when it seemed Neha had quieted down.
"The hotel's feature are unmatchable to any other hotel the Wal-"
"Papa papa papa…" The sound of a tiny pitter patter of footsteps could be heard in the quiet hall.
"Neha come back!" Masi tried to go off after her, but the little girl was too quick.
"Excuse me for just one minute…" Jai quickly said into the microphone.
"Papa!" Neha sounded excited with she saw Jai.
"Baby, go back to Dadi… Papa has to talk to all these people…"
Neha's smile quickly faded and a frown fell upon her face. "Papa no… Papa up…"
"Neha… Come with Mama…" Bani offered her hand. But Neha was too adamant and ran and hugged Jai's leg. Not wanting to delay the speech nor break his little girls heart, he picked her up and kissed her cheek and she smiled at him. With her in his arms, he walked back up to the podium, while Neha realized everyone was looking at her.
"Neha? Can you say hello to all these nice people?"
Feeling shy, she turned around and buried her face in his shoulder to hide herself, hugging him tight, making Jai break out into a apologetic smile.
"I apologize. You see, this is my daughter…" He explained. He fell into his thoughts for a moment, as he held Neha in his arms.
"You know…" Jai began to speak, without even looking at the written speech in front of him. "A little over a year ago, I thought it was only hard work that could bring you go to success. Over the past year, I realized that it could be a life changing event that can change your perspective, or even a person entering your life. In my case it was this little girl that I am holding in my arms. It is because of her I am where I am today. It is because of her I found my wife, the woman who I love the most in the world. The woman whom I can not imagine my life without. The woman who I am building my family with. It is because of this little girl, that the both of us came together and found our purpose in life. Without her smile, I feel like my day isn't complete. This little girl has been an angel in my life, giving my black and white life color again."
The audience broke out into an applause. Jai smiled at Bani, whose eyes were glistening with tears. He indicated to her to come up to the podium and join him. Carefully, she stepped up and stood next to him, feeling slightly shy.
The audience finally settled down and Jai smiled at his wife then turned to the audience. With that I would like to finally unveil, the official opening of the "Walia Grandeur Beach Resort!"
A thunderous applause swept over the audience and they stepped down from the podium to receive their accolades. The party went late into the night. By the end of it, Bani was extremely tired. Jai had seen her yawning a couple of times and realized that it had been such a long day. When last few guests remained, he walked up to his wife who was sitting at a table, resting her feet. The family had long gone back, and wanted to take her with them. Jai had even told her to go to bed, but she stopped him, saying that this night can only come once and she did not want to miss any part of it.
He kneeled in front of her. "Im sorry you waited, sweetheart." He kissed the back of her hand. "You should have gone home if you were so tired…"
"Jai…. I wanted to be here with you," She responded.
"Lets go home…" He stood up to help her. He held her hand as they walked past the dance floor, but then stopped in the middle of it.
"Whats wrong?" She asked curiously.
"Just one thing…" He nodded his head and the lights dimmed, and a soft song began to play. "Just one thing to make this night absolutely perfect… if you are up to it?" He asked tilting his head in a cute manner.
She smiled, feeling so loved. She nodded and he gathered her into his arms and swayed with her softly, memorizing every tiny feature of her beautiful face. He felt as if he had never seen such beautiful eyes in his life. There were warm and caring, they made him feel like he was home.
The song ended, and he stopped and just looked at his wife, the mother of his children.
"What happened?" She felt her heart race under his gaze.
"Every day, I realize how much more I love you…" He whispered to her. "I didn't think it was possible to love someone this much…"
She looked up at him, her eyes reflecting the same emotions wordlessly. He smiled at her, caressing her cheek. "Lets go home. Its late, and you and the baby both need some sleep…" With his arm protectively around her, they headed back to the the hotel room, feeling as one of their dreams had already come true, but knowing that so many more of their dreams were being fulfilled day after day.
