Hearbreak, Pachu-- saving? :(*******************************
A few days later, Jai woke up as usual checking the time. He was surprised to see that the room was empty. Jai looked at his hand, which no longer had a splint, just a bandage. He was happy it was recovering fast and that he could finally return the office. Hopping out of bed, Jai headed towards his cupboard and took out his clothes for the day, surprised that Bani hadn't done so already. Pulling out his normal suit and shirt, he laid it on the bed then headed for a shower.
In a short while, Jai walked out of the bathroom, wearing his towel and drying his hair with a second one and found that in place of his suit was a beige kurta pajama. He looked around, seeing the room empty as before. Jai quickly changed into the kurta pajama and sat on the edge of the bed to rewrap his wrist in the bandage.
Bani walked in seeing him dressed the clothes she had set out for him and struggling to wrap his wrist correctly. She sat next to him and touched his hand lightly, causing him to look up. Silently, she carefully wrapped his wrist, making sure it was securely done.
"Bani, why did you put my office clothes away?"
"Aaj ghar mein Puja hain…"
"Puja? For what?" He said checking his wrist when she finished.
"Today is Maa's birthday…" She said adjusting his collar. Jai paused for a moment to think of the date.
"It is Maa's birthday today. How did you remember?"
"I was looking for Neha's doctors number in your organizer and I saw your calendar. You had it noted there… That's why I organized a puja. I hope that's ok?" She asked tentatively.
"You did all that for Maa?" Jai asked. He felt his eyes begin to water, knowing that if his mother had been alive, she would have loved Bani. He touched her cheek and she held his hand there, nodding. He softly kissed her cheek. "I never got to spend too much time with her. I knew she found you for me because you would find a way I could be closer to my mom."
Bani blushed. "We always did it in my house, so I thought why not for Maa too…" Jai enveloped her in a hug, unable to explain the hoard of emotions that he felt at that moment. He did miss his mother, but Bani was his angel, who understood him and took care of him just the same.
"Jai, I think the Punditji will be here any minute." She said pulling back. "You should get ready and come downstairs…"
Jai headed downstairs after sometime to see that the rest of the family was standing around in the drawing room.
"Jai, why is there a puja set up here?" Jigyasa asked.
"Woh… Aaj Maa ki birthday hai. Bani organized a Puja for the occasion, to remember her." He said with a humbled smile.
Masi turned to look at Bani, who was entering the room with a Thali for Prasad. Bani had a serene smile on her face as she spoke with the Pundit at the door.
The Pundit looked at Bani. "Beta, who is doing the puja?"
"Masi will as she is the eldest." Bani responded.
Masi looked at Bani, unable to take her eyes away from her. A strange feeling came over her and she headed upstairs to her room, not knowing everyone had noticed.
Jai looked at her curiously. "I'll go check on her to see if shes ok."
"Wait… let me go." Bani said softly. She excused herself and headed upstairs. She knocked on the door softly.
"Yes?" She heard faintly.
Bani bit her lip and opened the door, not looking directly at Masi because she was unsure how she would react towards her coming into her room. Still, she took a deep breath and walked into the room. "Masi? The prayers are about to begin. They are waiting for you." She said quietly. When she received no response she turned around to head out.
"Ruko Bani…" Masi said softly. Bani stopped in her tracks and turned around. Masi looked at her with tears in her eyes and an evergrateful smile on her face. She had a picture frame in her lap. Patting the spot next to her, she indicated to Bani to have a seat next to her.
She hesitated for a moment, her nervousness indicated by fiddling with the pallu of her sari. But she went ahead and sat down, looking anywhere but at Masi herself.
"Krishna and I were so close, you know. We weren't too far apart in age, so when we were growing up we were always together. When she got married, I was so happy for her. I was married soon after her and then she had Jigyasa. She was happy, but she always wanted a second child. Then years later, she had Jai. And he was the apple of her eye- and everyone elses favorite, but he was always his mothers son. He ran to her whenever he needed anything. Krishna would do anything for that boy. When Uday Jiju died, she took care of him as a mother and father. She never let him feel his absence."
Bani settled in her seat a little bit, listening to Masi intently. It came as a surprise to her that Masi was talking to her, and that too so calmly.
"Then Krishna died, Jai was heartbroken. Its not like we could have predicted she would have a heart attack. So for the time I was here, I treated him with the same love that Krishna had given him. But I had to leave to be with my own family, and Jigyasa took over. Whenever I visited though, Jai would be by my side all the time."
She looked at Bani, who was looking down at her hands while listening. "Bani, do you know why I was so afraid for Jai when I met you?"
Bani shook her head.
"Because I saw the love in his eyes for you. And I was afraid that if someone took that away from him, he would be shattered like he was then. Who will be able to pick up the pieces of a broken man's heart?"
"Masi… I wouldn't ever break his heart…" Bani whispered.
"I know, beta." She said turning to Bani. "Im so sorry for what I did to you. When I saw Jai fall, I don't know what came over me. I just wanted to prevent him from that pain. But I saw how much him getting hurt scared you."
"Masi, he was my saving grace. He was the one who showed me how wonderful life could be. And more over…" Bani paused. "I love him, Masi. I love him more than my own life. Hes become my world- him and Neha. How could I ever break such a wonderful man's heart? I would die before I hurt him. There is nothing I wouldn't do to keep him happy."
"Please forgive me, Bani… I misjudged you completely. Im really sorry." Masi said holding her hands together with tears falling down her face.
Bani felt her eyes water. She shook her head, "No Masi… I know its because you love him so much. He's your son, so its understandable you would want him to be happy. I was so happy to see how much he loves you... I miss that with my own parents."
"Im here now… anytime you need a mother, you can come to me." She said pulling Bani into a hug. She could feel Bani crying, and felt her own tears falling down her cheeks. Masi realized she felt much lighter and happier now that everything was cleared with Bani. "Ab chalo, Punditji is probably waiting, right?" She said wiping the streaks from Bani's cheek.
Together they walked down with smiles on their faces. Everybody noticed that both Masi and Bani now truly looked happy. After they reached the bottom of the staircase, Bani led Masi to the havan kund.
"Bani, wait. I want you and Jai to do this. Jai beta, aao, Bani ke saath baitho."
He walked to them and hugged Masi, then sat with down with Bani by his side. Neha waddled to them. "Nea baitho?" She said trying to squeeze in a space in between her Mama and Papa.
"Come sit with Dadi!" Masi said happily. Neha got extremely excited and bounced her way over to Masi plopping herself in her lap.
Once the puja finished, they enjoyed their lunch together. They sat down in the drawing room. They were watching a movie, while Masi was intently showing Bani some pictures of Krishna, the family, and Jai's childhood. Jai couldn't help but feel embarrassed at some of them. He was a lanky kid, always taller than the rest of the kids. Fortunately, the rest caught up with his height later.
She was recalling Jai's most embarrassing stories making Bani hysterically laugh, and he tried his best not to pay attention and tried focusing on the film in front of him.
"Arre Jai, you never showed me your wedding pictures. Go get them!" Masi said suddenly. Jai nodded and ran to another room, only to return with an album. Masi looked at each of the pictures, running her fingers over them as if she lived in those moments.
"Bani, you look just beautiful." She said feeling her eyes become misty. Neha walked up to her peeking at the pictures.
"Ish Papa! Ish Mama!" She said excitedly. Bani pulled her to onto her lap, laughing while Masi went through the pictures.
"I wish I could have been there…" Masi said softly. "But its o k.. I will be there when my little pari Neha gets married…" She said pinching Nehas cheeks.
"What?" Jai said loudly. Suddenly his attention turned to Masi and Bani's conversation. "What did you say?"
"That I will be there with my little Neha gets married…"
"No no no…" Jai said taking Neha from Bani. "My little angel will never leave me."
"Jai, yeh kaisi baatein kar rahe ho?" Masi asked surprised. "One day she will have to leave… Sasural jaane parega."
"No… my Neha will only stay here. You don't want to leave Papa, right?" He asked suddenly feeling worried.
"Esh!" Neha responded.
"Good girl. Chalo Neha… lets go upstairs. These people are talking about taking you away from Papa. But we both know that will never happen." He said standing up and leaving the room. Neha waved by over his shoulder, not realizing what had gotten her Papa so nervous. The rest of the family just burst into laughter as he left, seeing the father suddenly so protective of his daughter.

Bani walked in room sometime later, hanging some of her dry cleaned saris into the cupboard. She glanced on the bed, where Jai was reading one of his files and Neha was sitting with one of her picture books. She giggled quietly as she saw that both were sitting against their bed with their legs stretched out and feet crossed. Like father, like daughter, she thought trying to control her urge to laugh. He turned a page, Neha looked up and turned one of hers. She patted all of the animals on each page, wanting them to play with her. Then when Jai turned the page again, Neha looked up and turned her page. Bani watched this happen for a few minutes. The little girl kept her eyes fixated on Jai. Everytime he turned a page of his file, she made sure to turn hers.
"Papa shee!" She said excitedly patting her book.
Jai looked up and smiled. "Wow, my baby is reading! Very good!" He said patting her cheek then looking at his file.
Bani cleared her throat loud enough for Jai to notice. He looked up at her, and she indicated quietly to turn the page of his file. He did so, as did Neha, but he didn't notice. He looked at Bani curiously, wondering what she was getting at. She motioned to him to turn the page again, then look at Neha. He did so, and from the corner of his eye, he saw Neha look upat him then turn the page of her book.. After a few seconds, he turned the page again and watched Neha turn hers.
Jai couldn't contiain himself and laughed loudly, tossing the file and beginning to tickle Neha. "You little monkey! Copying Papa!" Neha giggled and kicked, and even Bani joined them, tickling Neha.
They all tried to catch their breath, with Neha still giggling. Jai glanced over at Bani, who was also lying down trying to recover. "Neha, its Mama tickle time!" He said jumping up and starting to tickle Bani.
Neha got excited then started to poke Bani's waist trying to tickle her. Bani burst into a fit of giggles, and Neha laughed too.
"Bani!" Masi said walking in. She was caught off guard when she saw Bani laughing hysterically with Jai and Neha surrounding her. "Hmmm, yeh kya ho raha hai?" Masi asked with a cheeky smile.
They scrambled to get up. Neha sat there clapping her hands. "Nea ickle Mama!"
Jai rubbed the back of his neck, slightly embarrassed. He glanced at Bani who was trying to hide her smile.
"Masi, aap yahan?" She said trying to take the attention off of what was happening.
Masi simply laughed. "Nothing like that. Just needed some help in the kitchen."
"Oh! Ok…" Bani said hopping off the bed. She casted a glance back at Jai, with a slight smile, then headed out of the room following Masi.
Jai sighed and sat back. He really loved that woman.
Neha saw him smiling and crawled over to him sitting next to him. She began to pat his tummy, and he looked at her curiously.
"Nea ickle Paapa!" She said wanting him to laugh. Jai chuckled then scooped her into his arms making her squeal happily.

They sat down for dinner that night. Jai walked down to see Neha in Masi's lap and Aditya holding Raima. Jai smiled and walked over taking Raima from Adi. "Baby wants to spend some time with Mamu?" He said smiling. But Aditya slumped in his chair but didn't say anything as Jai played with Raima.
Bani walked in with Tony, and took her seat as he set down the dishes of the food. He smiled then left the family to enjoy their dinner. Bani took Raima from Jai, and played with her for a little bit before handing her to Rano.
Jai ate his food happily, loving each and everything that they cooked. If anyone knew that the way to a mans heart was his stomach, it was definitely Bani. He turned to glance at her plate and he noticed that she was hardly eating. She put just a few bites of the daal and rice, but none of her favorite mattar paneer.
"Bani, you made mattar paneer? Its so good, why aren't you eating?" He said reaching for the bowl to put it in her plate.
Bani put her hand up and stopped him. "No… I don't want any."
Jai looked at her funny. "But I thought it was your favorite."
"It is… but I just don't feel like having it." She said with a small smile. Jai shrugged it off and continued to happily eat his food.
After dinner, they talked for sometime, and watched Neha play with Raima. Neha cutely called herself 'Eedee' for Raima, so the baby would know Neha was her 'didi'. When everyone retired to their rooms, Masi took Neha with her stating that her little 'gudia' would stay the night with her.
Later that night, Jai walked out of the washroom, and tossed his towel on a nearby chair. Bani was sitting in bed studying one of her files quietly. He smiled and slipped into bed next to her, happy to have some quiet time with his wife.
"Bani?"
"Hmmm…." She answered, non chalantly.
"Are you almost done?"
"Haan, just one minute," she replied not bothering to look up.
Five minutes later, Jai checked the time. He sighed quietly. "I thought you were going to be done for minutes ago?" He asked half-jokingly.
Bani smiled, not taking her eyes away from her file. "I know… just one more minute."
Jai waited patiently. But his patience was clearly wearing down. All these days his wife had been running around. Jai looked at his healing arm- if only it were still in pain, Bani would not hesitate to put her file away.
"Bani, are you done?"
"Almost done…" She said quickly.
"Are you married to your file or to me?" He scowled.
"The file, of course." She responded seriously. After glancing at his expression, Bani simply laughed and shook her head, but still did not put her file down.
Jai sulked against his pillow and crossed his arms. All he wanted was a few moments with his wife. After waiting a few more minutes, Jai shut off his light and settled himself into his bed with his back turned towards Bani.
She immediately looked down and knew that he was upset. Feeling bad that she made him wait, she quietly set her file down and shut her light off. Inching towards him, she wrapped her arms around his waist and buried her face in his back.
"Let me sleep." He said sounding like a five year old boy. She knew he was sulking like a child, and she really wanted to indulge him.
"Hmm…. But Im not tired…" Bani responded, holding him tighter. Jai ungripped her arms around him, but refused to turn around. She smiled and bit her lip. So he was playing this game with her.
Carefully reaching up, she held his ear, in hopes that he would turn around. Instead, he quietly swatted her hand away. "Im trying to sleep."
Bani wanted to laugh at hearing his tone. She knew he was trying hard to stay angry with her. "I want to spend some time with my husband," she said sweetly.
"Why do you need your husband? Your file seems to be much more interesting."
"Jai…" She whispered running a finger down his spine. "Turn around, na?"
Jai froze feeling her finger run along his back. But determined to stick to his will, he shook his head. "Im sleeping." He simply stated.
"Oh really?" She said with a smirk. Her fingers found their way to his waist, and she began to tickle him, and as much as he didn't want to, he began to laugh and squirm.
"Bani!" He said trying to stop her.
"What? I wanted to check if you were ticklish too!" She said cheekily. But when she stopped, he still didn't turn around. Bani let out a deep sigh, and rolled over to her side quietly.
Jai remained still for a second, wondering why she was no longer trying to get him to turn around. Had she fallen asleep? He wasn't really angry, he knew. He just wanted to be with her for a little bit. The day had gone so well, especially with Masi accepting Bani. Cautiously, Jai turned around only to see Bani smiling at him.
"I knew you weren't mad!" She said with a triumphant smile.
Jai could no longer be mad, or pretend to be mad, at the woman who knew him that well. He shook his head and smiled, opening his arms for her. She happily took her usual spot.
"Cheater…" He said jokingly.
"Nope.. You were never mad at the first place." Bani stated firmly.
"You know, most wives complain about their husbands being workaholics. This is probably the first time a husband is complaining. And besides, if you keep overworking yourself, you will fall sick again."
Bani laughed and snuggled against him. He was definitely right. She had been more and more exhausted over the past few weeks, especially since Masi had arrived. But now that it was settled, she was sure that it was only going to get better.
