Silence Speaks

Monsoon has never been so ugly like this year.

Bani groaned as she woke up and looked outside. It seemed that it had been raining throughout the night. And the small lane in front of her house was waterlogged and she was sure that she'd find many muddy ditches in the road today. The most ironical thing was, the sky looked clear and the sun was pouring it's heat even in this early morning. It has been like this the whole season this year. It rained all night and in the morning it was so hot and humid. Cursing under her breath Bani got ready. Today she's promised to meet Rano as she didn't have any class before lunch. It seemed forever since they last met.

After an hour, Bani was sitting in the cafeteria of the Art College, where Rano studied. Rano sat across her blabbering happily, very much pleased to have some time with her friend after so long. Bani was glad as well. Rano has been her friend from first grade and there was a special bonding with her. After finishing high school Bani got herself admitted in BBA while Rano came to pursue her dream of being an artist in the art college. Bani suddenly felt awkward as two boys came and joined them.

'Bani, these are my friends ' this is Ranveer and this is Jai.'

Bani looked at them, Ranveer looked quite mischievous. He winked at Bani and offered his hand for a shake, 'Hey, I'm Ranveer. You're Bani, right? This girl doesn't stop talking about you.'

'Hello to you as well.' Bani replied, smiling. 'This girl doesn't stop about talking to you either.' she added thoughtfully while Rano blushed crimson and gave a 'I didn't' look to Ranveer who laughed, 'I guess she can't stop talking, that's it.'

Bani noticed that Jai was sitting quietly, listening to them. She felt a bit offended that he didn't put on a friendly gesture. 'Hello Jai.' she said casually. Jai just nodded his head. Bani felt a rush of anger towards him. Ok, he was dashingly handsome and he had such an innocence look that it made him immensely attractive, but that doesn't give him the right to be ignorant and so haughty. She deliberately avoided him as he took out a notebook and pencil and started to sketch something. The three of them had a very nice time talking with each other and pulling each others legs. Jai remained quiet and didn't utter a single word. Bani could feel that he was stealing glances at Bani and that made her even more angry. Finally Bani realized that it was time to leave otherwise she would miss her class. She took her leave and got up. After thinking a moment she mumbled a feeble 'good-bye' to Jai who looked up suddenly and realizing that she was leaving tore the page and handed it to her. Bani took it curiously and almost gasped as she saw the sketch.

He's sketched her. And it was awesome, it looked almost alive. She touched her own laughing face, partly covered by the hair tendrils that fell over her face on the sketch. 'It's beautiful.' she whispered. She looked up to thank Jai for such a beautiful sketch and found that he was gone. She looked around and finally saw him. He was looking at her from far. She smiled and he smiled back.

Bani didn't care the big stain of mud in her favourite salwar when she came back home.

...................

Two weeks have passed since the incident. Bani kept making excuses to visit Rano in her college, just so that she could have a glance at Jai. She saw him almost all the time she visited the Art College, and whenever they met, Jai smiled at her. But he never uttered a single word to her, Bani wondered why. She would keep staring at him while he played football or basketball and would get lost until Rano would nudge her. Rano understood her friend quite well and one day asked her casually, 'Do you like Jai, Bani?'

Bani who has always been very straightforward with her feelings, hesitated a bit and said, 'I do think I like him...I don't know.'

'Are you sure?' Rano asked suspiciously.

'Yes, I think I'm sure.'

Rano suddenly smiled broadly, 'I'm so proud of you Bani, I'm so proud of you. I think he likes you too...but it's really..I mean, you are really great!'

Bani felt Rano's words very strange but before she could question her any further Rano indicated Ranveer to come nearer and chirped excitedly about the latest discovery. Ranveer looked shocked for a moment and then he became happy as well and showed a thumbs up to Bani. 'Why don't you let him know this?'

'N-now?' Bani stammered. 'I don't think it's a good idea.'

'Off course it's a good idea.' Rano and Ranveer rolled their eyes.

.................

Bani flung herself on her bed and started to cry her heart out. 'what does he thinks of himself? I poured my heart out to him! And what he did? He remained quiet and left the place! The nerve of him! How dare he can do that. Oh, why did she have to fall in love with him in the first place, in such short time? When all he's done is to ignore her. Yes, he's drawn a picture of her but that doesn't mean she has to love him so deeply.

Bani cursed herself bitterly until sleep overcame her.

...................

'Last week of this bloody monsoon.' Bani muttered as she adjusted her umbrella. It was raining, but it was not one of the heavy rain pours that poets dream of. It was not even the slight drizzle that made your heart flip. It was something in between, and Bani knew that it was very annoying. The fact that she's to come to the Art College, didn't help much. After all, it's the place where she was left heart broken few weeks back. But she couldn't say no to Rano. It was the college's 'festival day' and Rano wanted Bani to take part in it. She stepped inside the gate and stopped in her space. The campus was looking too beautiful for words. She smiled to herself. The upcoming artists of the country has left no stones unturned to decorate the campus with their able paintings. The walls were painted, and there were lots of colourful posters around. They've made all kinds of birds with painted papers and have hung them from the various trees. She couldn't stop laughing as she saw a paper bear stuck under a tree. She was quite sure that it was Rano who has done this, Rano has been obsessed with bears since childhood.

She stopped in her track as she saw Jai sitting infront of a wall, painting something with deep concentration. His clothes and faces were full of various colours and he looked tired. Bani had a doubt that he's been awake the whole night. It surprised Bani that how can he possess such contradictory characteristics ' on one side he was a superb artist, dedicated to what he was doing and a perfectionist, painfully attractive and he had a warm glow in his eyes. On the other hand he was the rude, cold, haughty boy who refused to even talk with her.

She stood there until Rano came and dragged her away. Rano made her sit in the cafe and said angrily, 'What's wrong with you? One day, you are head over heels in love with him, the next day you don't want to hear his name, and then again you couldn't stop staring at him? What the hell is wrong with you?'

Bani burst into tears, 'What's wrong with me? Me? I'm in love with him! Why don't you understand? And I took the first step and let him know about my feelings. Do you want to know what he did? He remained quiet! He never even said anything to me. He could've told that 'he's sorry' or something if he didn't feel the same but he didn't..he just kept quiet.' Bani stopped and looked for an explanation from Rano and felt a bit uneasy seeing Rano's horrifed expression.

'What happened to you?' Bani demanded.

Rano dropped herself and covered her face with her palms and whispered softly, 'You don't know?'

'Know what?' Bani asked anxiously.

'Oh my God Bani. I'm so sorry. I thought you would figure it out. Blame me, I should've told you.......'

'Stop this nonsense and tell me the fact.'

'Bani, Jai can't speak.' Rano finally whispered.

'Excuse me?' Bani thought that she didn't correctly.

'Bani....calm down dear, I know I should've told you. But I really thought you'd figure out. He can't speak since he's 10. he had a real bad accident and couldn't speak since then.'

'Then how come he's with...with normal people?' Bani asked. Rano, however looked disgusted, 'He's normal Bani. You've seen his drawing ability, he can draw anything. Why shouldn't he be here? Just because he became unlucky? Just because he can't speak? Just because he doesn't have all the privileged of being a human, we should snatch away the other positive things from him as well? I told you that I'm proud of you Bani, because I thought you loved him even after knowing this. But........today I feel so ashamed to say that you are my friend.'

Bani broke down crying once again.

.............

Bani ran through the mass of people. All of them were laughing, talking, dancing ' enjoying the festival. Her eyes looked for a certain person but she didn't find him anywhere. She looked around crazily, she's to find him. Perhaps it was not late enough...she stood still as she saw him. He was in the basketball court, unmindfully dribbling the ball. The court was empty, nobody was in mood to play basketball in the festive day. Bani wanted to run towards him and wipe the lost look from his face. She came and stood near him. He looked up and was shocked to see her. He wanted to go away but Bani held his hand. 'Jai.' she said softly. He looked down. She cupped his face and made him look at her. 'Jai, tell me whatever you want to tell me with your eyes and read my answer from my eyes.'

they kept looking at each other for a long time and finally as if, inevitably, their lips met. Bani threw her arms around his neck and he held her closer as they kissed passionately. For the first time in this year, the rain started to pour heavily soaking both of them.

Monsoon has never been so beautiful like this year.
