Hey guyz,
She walked to the main entrance and sure enough, a black BMW was waiting for her. The window rolled down, and her eyes feasted on him as Jai took off his shades and stared at her.
A smile spread across her face as she walked around and sat inside. Soft music was playing in the background as the car sped up through the crowded streets of Bombay. It took her a few minutes to recognize the song as Jai sang along with it.
"Bakhuda tumhi ho, har jagah tumhi ho, haan main dekhu jahan jab, uss jagah tumhi ho. Yeh jahan tumhi ho, who jahan tumhi ho, iss zameen se falak ke, darmiyaan tumhi ho. Tumhi ho… beshumaar, tumhi ho…." He sang, but Bani interrupted.
"Since when did you start listening to movie songs?"
"Love makes you do things," he replied with a smile.
"Yeah, yeah."
It was quiet for a while as none of them spoke. Bani felt herself drifting away…
She awoke to see that they were speeding away from the city. The houses now resembled like cottages. She glanced at the dashboard and noted the time to be 6:00 pm. When did she doze off?
She looked at Jai and saw him concentrating on the road.
"Why didn't you wake me up?" she asked, her voice hoarse from her nap.
"Didn't have the heart too. You were asleep for only an hour." Then he added, " Besides, you needed it. You have four hours of sleep everyday."
"I wonder why," she muttered under her breath. Jai smiled.
Her one year art course was coming to an end and she was being piled with work. Crtiques, paintings, reports were expected from her every other day. She barely found time to breath. On top of that, Jai always wanted to spend time with her. They spent every evening together and Bani had no time to finish her work, without staying up half the night.
"Where are we going?" Bani asked. The road was going to end in two kilometers, according to a sign board. Jai didn't answer. Instead, he slowed down a bit.
And finally, they came to a halt infront of a few trees. She got out of the car and stood there, trying to figure out where they were going. Bani couldn't see anything beyond the trees.
Jai took out a blindfold and held it front of her eyes.
"Why do I need this?" She asked curiously. "I can't see anything either way."
"A surprise is a surprise," Jai said, tying the piece of cloth securely behind her head. He held her hand and slowly started walking forward. Suddenly Bani tripped over a rock and he caught her just in time.
"See," she complained. "I will hurt myself. Take off the blindfold."
Jai just sighed. He picked her up in his arms and continued to walk.
"How did you plan everything in such a short time?" She asked, holding on to him.
"I have my ways." Bani could hear his smile.
"But still. In fifteen minutes, you organized everything," she continued.
"You were asleep on the way," he reminded her.
"Not for too long."
"I am Jai Walia, sweety. A few phone calls on the way is all it takes." he said.
"Will you ever stop being proud of yourself?"
"Not when I have everything I want."
"There should be something you don't have," Bani said, trying to think of some of his weaknesses.
"I have education, recognition, money, love and a family. What more do I need?"
"umm…" Bani racked her brains to come up with something.
"You can't even think of one," he said confidently.
"Fine you win," she grumbled. Jai laughed.
"There is still one thing…but only you can give it to me," he said slowly.
"What?"
"Twins," he answered coolly.
"That's more than one," she pointed out.
"I will be happy with even one of them," he said.
Bani was quiet. She didn't have an answer.
"You don't want kids Bani?" He asked gently and quietly.
"Whats with you and kids today?" She questioned, trying ot change the topic. It would have worked, only if Jai didn't know her so well.
"Don't change the topic. I only want the answer."
"You won't like it," she said slowly.
"Try me."
Bani took a deep breath. "I don't think we are ready for it Jai."
"We can't take the responsibility?" He asked.
"It… just doesn't feel right. When the time comes, we will have one," she promised.
"So when is the time?" He pressed on.
"I don't know… I have this feeling saying that it is not the right time. As if there is something that is wrong…something that I should watch out for... Something bad is waiting to happen…"
Jai didn't reply.
"Are you mad at me?" She asked quietly.
"No… I am just trying to understand your point of view."
"I am sorry…" She whispered.
"Don't be Bani. You have a much more say in this." Jai suddenly came to a halt.
"Are we here?" She asked, excited.
"Yes."
Jai set her down and slowly opened her blindfold. Bani was mesmerized.
In front of her was a lake, surrounded by trees. There were small ripples in the water as the wind blew gently. The sun was setting at the end of the lake, giving the water an organgish tint.
There was also a small yot waiting. It looked like a cruise, only it was really small. It could accomadate only a few people. Lights decorated the boat, making it beautiful in the setting sky.
"Do you like it?" Jai asked after a few minutes. All Bani could do was nod. She was still shocked. She was expecting a candle light dinner… but in a matter of one or two hours, Jai organized this?
Jai smiled. He took her hand and helped her on the boat. He then left to have a talk with the captain.
Bani faced the sun set and watched the water. Its constant movement gave a reminder about herself. How her life was constantly changing as well. Pushkar...Pia's accident…her marriage…their hatred…their friendship…their love… and now, Jai wanted their children.
It was going so quickly. But she enjoyed every bit of it regardless. But in the corner of her heart…she was scared. Life was perfect…a bit too perfect. She felt Jai's arms around her as he hugged her from behind.
"What are you thinking?" he murmered into her ear.
"Time goes by so fast…"
"Like I said…it doesn't wait for anyone."
Both of them stood in the silence, watching the sun until its rays were extingusied completely. In the darkness, the boat shone even more brightly.
"Hungry?" He asked. Bani nodded.
They walked inside to find the room in darkness. A few candles were lit and in the very center, there was a table for two. Music was playing in the background as they took a seat. A waiter came by and offered them drinks.
"When did you plan all of this?" Bani demanded, as soon the waiter left.
"On the way," Jai answered, not taking his eyes of the menu.
"But…but…its…just…so perfect!" she spluttered.
Jai smile. "I know. Everything I do is always perfect."
"Jai…" she moaned
"Bani…"
"Jai…"
"Bani…"
"Jai…"
"Bani…"
Bani glared at him and he laughed. Jai loved to irritate her. No matter how much he had to pay later!
"If you must know," he said. "it's a secret!"
Bani rolled her eyes. "Since when do you have secrets?"
"Since this woman interrupted my peaceful life."
"What woman?"
"Oh you wouldn't know her. Long hair, deep eyes, rosy lips and a small nose." Bani frowned as Jai continued. "Very pretty and her name is Bani."
"Ha ha ha. Very funny!"
Jai laughed at her expression. "Qu'est ce-que aurez-vous pour le dner, madame?"
Bani was surprised. "And since when did you start speaking French?"
"Le franais s'il vous plat," he replied.
"Quand avez-vous commenc parler le franais?" She repeated her question.
Jai was lost. It took him a while to learn that one question he asked her; 'What will you have for dinner, madam?' And when he expected her to be impressed and stumped, she asked him something else. And so, he used the rest of his vocabulary to answer, which meant 'French please!' However, that too failed for she repeated her question in a fluent tone.
Bani started to laugh, seeing his expression. "Tu parle bon franais," she said.
"Huh?"
"I said, you speak good French," she clarified, still laughing.
"Stop mocking me Bani!"
"Hey, you are the one who started it. You could have just accepted defeat when I understood your first question."
"How was I suppose to know that you were a French expert?"
"You don't use your brain do you?"
"Look who's talking!"
"Shut-up. I am from Canada Jai. Of course I know French!"
Jai shook his head at his own stupidty.Of course she would know French. Next he would pick a different language!
"Waise, you will never stop trying to out do me, right Jai?" Bani asked, when she calmed herself from the constant giggles.
"Umm…" he answered thoughtfully. "I. Don't. Think. So."
Before she could reach out and hit him, the waiter came and both of them quickly ordered their food.
"You have a pretty good taste Jai," Bani complimented.
"How about the best taste?" He offered.
"Don't push your luck!"
"Take other things for example," he said.
"Such as…?"
"The Walia Industries."
"What about it?"
"They are the best right now," he replied.
"Right now," Bani said, emphasizing the present tense. "What about tomorrow?"
"Okay, something else then. The mansion?" He continued, seeing Bani's confusion. "Its one of the best houses in Bombay and I built it myself!"
"One of the best."
"Something else…" Jai thought for a moment and then said. "My choice is the best."
"How so?" she asked.
"I chose you…"
