Wow I love this thread, so many various insights of the epic. In my view many historians believe that there was a gruesome war in ancient India, which is actually the foundation of the Mahabharat.
The evidence of the underground city of Dwaraka shows that there were rich kingdoms and cities.
A story about the rise and fall of dynasties.
The fact that nobody is able to say which is the correct story or edition of the Mahabharat, makes me believe that it is a largely fictionalized story of a real war.
I don't think it is a book of good vs evil , but rather a way of life. The book including of all the folklore stories from different parts of the country has all the different, characteristics, complex emotions of human relationships which makes it the most interesting.
Can any of you tell me where can I get the southern edition ,if available online .

Southern Recension does not have an English/Hindi translation, which is why it has remained largely inaccessible. But if you can read Sanskrit, here is the link to it:

If you can read Telugu by any chance, you can read Andhra Mahabharata by Kavitrayam. It was written around 11th Century AD (started by Nanaya Bhatta) and completed by 13th Century AD by two other poets. The three of them are collectively called Kavitrayam.

Though Andhra Mahabharata might be a "retelling" rather than a verbatim translation like KMG or Bibek Debroy's CE, but it caters to the Southern Recension of Mahabharata.

Thanks...

My views on Draupadi have gradually changed over the years with more exposure to the text as well as various different versions of the Epic. 😊

Idk if this discussion happened here or not but since a lot of you know quite a bit about the epic, I have a doubt.
There's a story about Janmayeya's snake sacrifice and how Vaishampayena narrated the Mahabharat then etc. I read somewhere that there was one more person, a disciple of Vyas perhaps, I am not sure, who narrated the epic slightly favouring the Kauravas or from their perspective. I think his name started with J. I can't remember.
But only one part of the epic is available. Can someone give me some website regarding this story ?
