"You are so quiet today Gauri, are you feeling okay?" Anupam asked as he and Gauri shelved books at the library. Gauri spent all her free time at the library with Anupam, volunteering their time, shelving and organizing books or tutoring students. Gauri just nodded her head in response to Anupam's question, letting him know she was fine. But truly she wasn't. She was so bothered by the fact that Shiv had been so rude, laughing and not helping her. She had been so wrong about him, when he had helped her get home after the movie that day. How could she be such a fool to think that Shiv was a good guy.
Gauri suddenly looked up as she heard a loud thud, as the books in Anupam's hands slipped and fell to the ground. She looked at Anupam and found him totally dumbstruck and looking towards the entrance of the library. Gauri turned around to see what he was so surprised about. Suddenly Gauri's heart skipped a beat as she found Shiv standing at the door, looking a bit confused. Anupam quickly went to Shiv, while Gauri turned back around pretending not to see him.
"Shiv, are you feeling okay, this is the library." Anupam asked half jokingly and half seriously. Shiv just looked at him with a 'not funny' expression and then looked passed Anupam trying to find Gauri.
"Where is she?" Shiv finally asked.
"Who?" Anupam asked a bit surprised.
"Your twin, Gauri." Shiv replied sarcastically.
"Gauri? Why do you want to see her?" Anupam was a bit confused.
"Are you going to tell me where she is or should I go find her myself?" Shiv was getting a bit annoyed, he needed to talk to Gauri now, and he didn't appreciate Anupam delaying Shiv.
"She right there, on the ladder, shelving the books." Anupma pointed to Gauri who had her back to them.
"What does he want?" Gauri whispered to herself, as she heard Shiv call out her name, standing at the foot of the ladder looking up at Gauri.
"What?" Gauri finally looked down and asked.
"Can I talk to you?"
"Can't you see I am busy."
"Okay fine I'll go." Shiv was obviously annoyed now. He was not used to getting his way and if she didn't want to hear his appologize for this morning, then it was not his problem atleast he had tired.
"Shoot he is leaving, stop him Gauri!" Gauri thought to herself. "Okay wait I am coming!" Gauri tried to call after him, but it being the library she could not speak too loudly and Shiv continued to walk, even though he had heard her. Shiv had a smile on his face, she was going to come after him now, and for some reason he wanted her to. "Wait!" Gauri called out again, a litte panicked that Shiv was going to get away, she hurried down the ladder. Suddenly missing a step in her rush, Gauri slipped and fell straight to the ground. "Ouch!" She cried out, she was not hurt much, as she was nearly at the bottom of the ladder, probably more embarrassed than anything. Shiv quickly walked to her and helped her up.
"Second time you fell in front of me today. If I didn't know better I would say you were falling for me." Shiv joked, but Gauri looked at him totally embarrassed and blushing profusely.
"Huh... umm...noo... what... do you... mean... nooo... it is no...nothing..." Gauri stuttered and flustered.
"It was a joke." Shiv said, with a slight smile of amusement on his face as he found Gauri absolutely adorable at this time. She had taken him litterally, it was just so innocent.
"Oh." Gauri said, as Shiv helped her to a table.
"Are you hurt?" Shiv asked.
"No, why would I be, it was just a joke." Gauri replied.
Shiv looked in her eyes and realized she had misunderstood him again. She was just allowing herself to get embarrassed again and again. He tried to hide his smile and then continued, "I meant, are you hurt anywhere, physically?"
"Oh..." Gauri said, blushing even more now. "No."
An awkward silence followed as Gauri and Shiv glimpsed into each others eyes. Finally Gauri spoke again, "why are you here, it is so obvious I keep making a fool of myself in front of you, do you want something to laugh about again?" Gauri looked down at her hands, feeling disappointed that she was kept putting herself in such positions.
"I came to say sorry." Shiv answered.
"Sorry?" Gauri looked up at him.
"Yah, for this morning. You were right, I should have helped and not let my friends laugh at you." Shiv said smiling at Gauri.
Gauri looked back at him and saw such kindness on his face, the same kindness she had seen on him the day he had walked her home. Without any more thoughts Gauri decided to take a risk. "Shiv... how can you be so nice one moment and then have such a different persona a moment later. I mean that day when I saw you in the field with Shashank, you looked so..."
Before Gauri could finish her sentence Shiv stood up and stood before her, all kindness disappered and an angry, hurt and distant look on his face. "It is my personal matter and you stay out of it!" He warned and then walked out of the library.
Gauri felt a lump grow in her throat and felt like she could cry any moment.
"What happened?" Anupam asked as he walked over to Gauri, looking back at Shiv who was walking out of the library.
Gauri shook her head slowly as tears welled up in her eyes. "What happened to Shiv?" Gauri asked Anupam.
