Four Walled World

Gauri sat by her room window as she watched the sun set her heart filling with excitement because it was time for Ipshitta to be home soon. A smile spread across her lips as Ipshitta's silloutte appeared walking across the great lawn of Gauri's grandmother's bunglow. Her shoulders were slouched as she dragged her bag. Gauri jumped and could not run fast enough when suddenly she was stopped by a short snap by her grandmother.

"Gauri, what would your mother think if she saw you behaving you like this right now."

Hearing her grandmother, Gauri immediately stopped, her smile disappearing as she knew her grandmother was right. If Gauri's mother was alive she would be so ashamed that her daughter could not even glide down the stairs like a lady is suppose to. Instead she was tumbling down like a untamed horse. With her head bent down she continued down.

"Where are you going anyways?" Her grandmother asked in her stern voice.

"Probably going to go see that tomboy friend of hers who you don't approve of Naniji." Maya, Gauri's cousin answered on her behalf, her tone obviously taunting.

"Is that right Gauri?" Her grandmother asked. Gauri turned around, her head still bent and started climbing up the stairs, she knew she would not be able to meet Ipshitta today. Gauri never understood why her grandmother disliked Ipshita so much. It was not her fault she was born into a poor home that was not up to her Grandmother's stature. Her grandmother allowed Ipshitta's mother, Suguna to care for Gauri as her Nanny, but never approved of Gauri and Ipshitta minglining as friends. Gauri never understood it, but was never brave enough to question it.

"That girl is no good Gauri." Gauri heard her grandmother say as she entered her room and went to go sit by the window again.

As Gauri hid her head between her knees wishing she could just once get to rest her head in her mother's lap instead, she heard a knock on her window. She quickly raised her head to find Ipshitta standing on the narrow ledge smiling ear to ear. Gauri jumped up frightened and then quickly opened the window. Ipshitta stepped in and Gauri ran to shut the door of her room before anyone could hear what was going on. Before Gauri could utter another word Ippishitta started weaving together all the happenings that Ipshitta had experienced in school today making Gauri forget her all her worries. This was her world, her grandmother's house. She was home schooled and was never allowed out of the house. Her grandmother was afraid that she would lose Gauri to an unworthy man as she had lost her daughter. Gauri's only connection to the outer world was Ipshitta, her only and most precious friend. They were total opposites. While Ipshitta was poor, Gauri was rich. If Ipshitta was outgoing, outspoken and rebellious, Gauri was shy, quiet and obidient. Ipshitta was a total tomboy, there was not a boy in her class she had not beaten up. Gauri on the other hand didn't even know what boys were like. The only man in her life was Maya's father, her uncle and he too was mostly out on buisness trips. The rest of her family consisted of women.

The next time a man would enter her life would be six years later, when she would turn eighteen. Much wouldn't change about Gauri in those six years. She would still take solace in her room when her Grandmother would come down hard on her for not acting like a proper young lady. She would still enjoy her time spent in the kitchen preparing for her grandmother's dinner parties more than the dinner party itself where she would have to make pleasant conversations with some pseudo-intellects. Her massi and uncle would remain estranged to her and Maya would grow up to hate her even more. As for her best friend Ipshitta, she would go from beating up all the boys in her class to dating all of them. No one would have guessed that such a tomboy would grow up to be such a boy attractant. Actually the truth was Ipshitta wasn't that beautiful or grown out of her tomboy attitude for that matter of fact. And it was just that outspoken and daring attitude of hers that allowed her to ask out any boy she liked.

As time passed Gauri's grandmother's dislike for Ipshitta only grew stronger. She hated the fact that she was the nanny's daughter yet Gauri prefered her over any of the daughters of her grandmother's elite friends. She tried so hard to get Gauri from stop seeing Ipshitta but in the end they both some how found a way to communicate whether it was Ipshitta's sneaking in through Gauri's room window, or meeting under the kitchen dinning table. No matter what anyone said about Ipshitta, Gauri loved her and she knew Ipshitta would do anything for her too. Uptill her eighteenth birthday Ipshitta was Gauri's only door to the outer world, and on her eighteenth birthday it would be Ipshitta who would get Gauri to step out of that door and actually enter the real world.

"What is it?" Gauri asked holding a large box covered with wrapping paper, an anxious smile spread across her lips.

"Open it and find out." Ipshitta replied taking a seat at Gauri's dressing table and applying the make-up that sat on it. Ipshitta was the only one who used Gauri's make up. Gauri had no use for it, but her grandmother insisted she keep it there because she wanted no one thinking her grandaughter was deprived of anything.

Gauri placed the box on her bed and searched for the fold where the gift wrap was taped.

"Oh Gauri, eighteen years and you still haven't learnt how to open a present." Ipshitta scolded Gauri as she snatched the box out of her hand and ripped the wrapping. Gauri smiled watching Ipshitta, it was just like her, no patience. Finally with the wrapping off, Ipshitta handed the box back to Gauri.

"Now you better hurry up and open or I will open the rest for you too. You only get one present so..." Ipshitta stopped mid-sentence, regretting her words, she always spoke faster than she could think. It was true, no body ever remembered or celebrated Gauri's birthday. It was on her birthday that her mother had died given her birth. Her grandmother would spend the entire day locked up in her room and, well, no one else cared about Gauri, other than Ipshitta and Suguna. Suguna would always prepare a special cake for Gauri which they would cut secretly after the kitchen had been shut for the night and everyone had gone to sleep.

Gauri finally managed to open the box and pull out all the pieces of crumbled newspaper Ipshitta had stuffed in it. Finally at the very bottom, sat an application of some sort. Gauri pulled it out and started to read. She then looked up at Ipshitta, excitement and fear both clearly evident on her face.

"Ipshitta?"

"I don't want to hear anything Gauri. I have done everything. I filled you entire application and got all the necessary documents that go with it. All you have to do now, is mail and get your grandmother to sign it."

"She will never agree."

"Gauri, she home-schooled you but she can't possibly plan to open a college in this mansion for you too. You can't always stay here Gauri you have to experience the outside world for yourseves, how long will you rely on me?"

***

"You want to go to college?" Gauri's grandmother's voice echoed in the study as she sat at a wooden desk, holding on to her walking stick watching a obviously nervous Gauri stand at the door with her head bent nervously biting her lower lip. Gauri's grandmother stood up and walked over to Gauri, placing her hands her shoulder she pushed them back and then lifted her chin so she could see her face. Gauri kept her eyes downcast though. "There is so much of your mother in you... sometimes I feel like I am just looking at her..." Hearing her grandmother says those words suddenly a smile spread across Gauri's face as she raised her eyelids to reveal her tear-filled eyes to her grandmother. Suddenly the softness in her grandmother's eyes disappeared, "And of your father too..." She said turning her back to Gauri and walking back to the desk. "I guess I can't keep you here forever." She said turning around, "you have my permission. Just remember the mistakes your mother made. Don't bring home an unworthy man." So there it was, the happiest moment of Gauri's life till now turned into her saddest. Her father deemed a mistake and unworthy.

"Thankyou Naniji." Gauri whispered as she left the study.
