I don't really watch Kalasam but I've noted the comment here that SS's role is not as assertive as it was as the ACDurai character in Anandham. The same comments were made with respect to his role in the new serial, Kalyanam.
This comment here is not to defend him, but my impression is that male characters are usually incidental to serials, which tend to focus on the female leads. I read somewhere that the reason for this focus is the assumption (valid or otherwise) that it's mainly housewives and women who watch serials. For movies, on the other hand, the audience is wider, with more men watching, so the focus tends to be on the hero.
Just consider the titles of movies and serials:
Films: Billa, Vasool Raja MBBS, Sivaji, Padayappa, Vallavan, Polladhavan, Bhadri, etc.
Serials: Kasthuri, Ahalya, Lakshmi, Thirumathi Selvam, Arasi, Selvi, etc
Even not considering the titles, the emphasis is very clear, why is why almost every serial has a crying woman. Producers/directors of serials think their main constituents are women and the focus of their stories is usually on the trials and tribulations that women face. So men shine in serials when they are villains or by fluke, e.g., the ACD character, who was not a main character at all.
Btw, notice that this time Sathyajyothi Films, probably in response to the many feminist remarks that some of us IF readers posted on the Anandham thread, has decided to have a female ACD instead in the shape of DSP Mayavathi, played by Yuvarani ;-)
