The Proposal
The night was beautiful. The sky, now painted a deep navy blue, blanketed dozens of twinkling stars. A light breeze whistled, causing the nearby trees to whisper in contentment and the river to quiver in response. Even the heavens were rejoicing tonight.
She closed her eyes, sighing as she felt the warmth of the night embrace her. She beautified her attire - a simple, white gown, extending well beyond her ankles. The thin fabric floated in the wind, emphasizing her radiance even further. "Oh Manik," she breathed. Two hands slid slowly down her arm, encompassing her from behind. She tilted her head, the tension in her body quickly being replaced with peace, and rested her back on Manik's chest. She could feel his warm breath caressing her hair, teasing it out of the French braid she had knotted it in. "This is absolutely beautiful. She whispered, tears lining her eyes. She felt his answering smile touch her cheek. He ran his hands across her waist, pulling her back against him. "I know." He murmured. The huskiness in his voice was like a thousand lightning bolts racing down her spine. She shivered, in newfound understanding. He was calling her beautiful.
Hesitantly releasing her, he locked his hand through hers and guided her across the wet, dew filled grass to a large rock just by the river bank. "Sit, he said, helping her down. For a moment, there was silence. It was as if the two were lost within each other, unable to recognize anything or anyone else. It was just them; them, the fireflies and the stars the three things that had begun their journey together.
"This is my spot," he finally said, taking a seat beside her. "Nandini, I've never had anyone I could count on. My father is rich, but with no time to spare for his son. My mother couldn't see beyond my father's money. When I was young, I used to look at my friends' parents and wonder where I had gone wrong...why I didn't have the family they did...because to that 12 year old boy who knew nothing about the world's workings, it had to be his fault. I spent half my life wondering what it was about me that was unlovable...wondering what was wrong with me and how to fix it. When I turned 18, I saw my mother, in bed with Harshad. I spent days...Nandini...days just crippled, angry, and frustrated. It's as if that image has been burned in my brain." He paused, shuddering. Nandini felt a part of her break for the man beside her, who still had that young, terrified boy, locked up somewhere in the corner of his heart. Taking a hold of his hand, she squeezed, encouraging him to continue.
"At that moment, it dawned on me. I thought I finally understood the way the world works: you have to fight. You have to be the one in control...you have to be the one hurting others, or the world will hurt you. Mukhti, Aliyah, Dhruv and Cabir, they're a replica of me...just with a different backstory." He smiled weakly, but Nandini could feel his pain in every part of her soul. Taking a wavering breath, he began once more. "Whatever they were, however they were...they were family Nandini. They ARE family...the closest thing I'll have to a home." He turned to then look at his beloved. "And then you walked into my life, turning it entirely upside down." He smiled, interlocking her hand in his. "Do you know what the first thing I thought about you was?" Nandini shook her head. "I thought you were my angel." Her eyes widened in amusement. "Your...angel..?" He nodded. "That day, when you walked into the FAB 5 rehearsal room with Navya...I had eyes only for you Nandini...only you. You were the most beautiful girl I had laid eyes on, and somehow, somewhere, I knew you were it." He paused, wincing at his own words. "That doesn't sound too cheesy does it?
Nandini couldn't help but feel an overwhelming sense of joy. This sweet, adorable, beautiful and utterly innocent man was all hers. "Not in the slightest." Saying so, she turned his face, placing a soft kiss on his cheek. "You gave me life, Nandini" he said, his words breaking. "You made me forget about the pain. When I was with you, I would fight with you, yell at you, argue with you...love you... Your innocence...it's beautiful Nandini...it's so pure. Every day I'd notice you, your smile, your laughter...it gave me purpose. Do you remember how I used to get angry that you smiled for Dhruv and not for me?" Nandini nodded. "Somewhere, you gave me a reason to live. I wanted to see you happy, and I wanted to be the one to get you there. I want you Nandini...with me forever. In happiness, sadness, good times, bad times...every moment. I can't imagine life without you Nandini. You're it for me"
Saying so, he stood from the rock and kneeled down, by the bank of the river. Out of his coat pocket, he pulled out a tiny, red velvet box. Nandini's heart was pounding, threatening to break out of her body. "Nandini," he whispered, opening the box in front of her. "I love you. I love you more than you can ever imagine. And I will love you every step of the way. I want to be your friend...your companion...your hero...your soulmate..." He smiled. "I want to be the one you sneak out with on midnight ice cream dates. I want to be the one to tickle you until you can no longer stand...I want to be the one to hold you when you fall. I want to watch our children grow together. Most of all, I want to give you every happiness, every joy that you deserve." Nandini had tears in her eyes, rushing down her cheeks as she held a hand to her mouth, unable to speak. "Nandini Murthy, will you marry me?"
She reached out; throwing her arms over the man she loved. "Manik Malhotra," she whispered shakily. "I think...I might just be irrevocably in love with you." He chuckled, returning the embrace with equal vigour. "Then I'm one hell of a lucky man"
They didn't know how long they stood, simply basking in the glow of the moonlight, amidst the beautiful silver stars and twinkling fireflies. A new journey had begun. As the darkness of the night began to set in, the silver bracelet that both Manik and Nandini wore outshone every star in the sky. MaNan.
