Chapter 79

In his current physical condition, he shouldn't have knelt down on the floor. The pain in his joints was debilitating & the journey from Mumbai had worsened it further. In fact, it was so bad that he could literally roll on the floor wailing like a 2 year old child. But without as much as a single cringe on his brows, he was pulling out the last few remaining items from the lowest rack of her drawer and stuffing it inside an oversized carton. He could have, in fact he should have asked his driver to assist him, but portions of Manik's brain acted stubborn beyond logic when it came to Nandini. He wouldn't let anyone else touch any of her stuff, he had to do it himself, as if it was a territory only he had the permission to invade, even when it caused him pain like now.

Nandini stood there for a while, in what was now a mere skeleton of her once cozy bedroom. A house that used to scream of her presence, had been stripped clean of all her tell tale marks.

Why was it becoming so difficult to let go? It was just a house after all, and that too a residence provided by her school. It wasn't as if this house belonged to her and she had been staying here for years. It had just been a little over six months. Why this piercing sadness then? Nandini was struggling to keep her emotions in control.

What was it about this place that tugged so powerfully at her heart? Was it because it was her first job, was it the beautiful hilly ambience, was it the memories she made here, the freedom Panchgani gave her away from everyone or did it have anything to do with Manik.

Its human nature to associate memories with things. A song can remind us of a person we love, or of the time we spent with them. A gift never remains just a gift, it eventually becomes a memoir. That's why people frame photographs and tuck away flowers in the folds of their books. This is why we pick souvenirs, because we want to hold back time & bottle up its original essence. This house, was a collection of her best memories with Manik. This town stood for miracles, because this is where she had got him back, years after giving up on even the last bit of hope. This is where they had become friends & he had fallen for her, this is where he had made all her wishes come true and this is where he had begun to heal her ailing heart. However, this realization was yet to hit her.

She kneeled down and sat next to Manik who was still picking and packing things. She squeezed her hand in the tiny space between his torso and his arm and gently leaned over his shoulder.

He didn't speak anything, even though he could clearly see the turbulence in her eyes. He just ran his fingers through her strands and gently patted on her back.

"Manik chalo, I can't stay here anymore. It's choking me."

"Hm..." he said pulling her closer and kissing on her forehead twice. Nandini got up and helped Manik stand up. This time Manik couldn't hide the pain from reflecting on his face. He was in one piece, but that one piece felt like a thousand broken pieces glued together.

"Shit, Manik, tum neeche kyun baithe."

"Chalein Nandini?"

They walked out, hand in hand.

**********

"Hum yahan kyun aaye?" Instead of going to her school to return the key, they had driven away from the town, towards the hill top resort. "Hume to ye keys wapas karke Mumbai jana tha na."

"Hmm, but I can't travel so much in one day. So we will spend the day here and return to Mumbai tomorrow and drop the keys on the way. Ok?"

It had completely slipped from her mind that Manik was still far from being recovered.

Nandini was literally shocked, the moment she set foot in their room. Because it wasn't a room, it was more like a mansion that could perhaps fit a family of 6. It was beyond exquisite as it was right at the top and had a 360 view of Panchgani. One could only dream of a place like this, that one day she would be spending a night here was beyond her imagination. She could tell, this came at a hefty price, clearly not something that she or her family could afford. She rolled her eyes at Manik who, was eagerly waiting to see the reaction on her face. "Are you out of your mind, just because you have money, you will spend it like this?" She rebuked angrily the minute the room service guy left.

He was kind of expecting this. Though he thought his broken state would earn him some discount.

"This is your idea of taking rest? Ridiculous Manik. Let's cancel and go back. I am not staying here." She said retracing her steps back.

"Are ruko to...meri baat to suno." He dragged her to the balcony attached to their suite, and the view that welcomed them could perhaps redefine the word 'breath-taking'.

She wanted to tell him , she felt claustrophobic here, knowing that it was his dad's money that he was splurging on her. How could she forget, what his money & power could do. How could she forget the three years of respective hells they both had been pushed to. How could she accept anything that the same money bought them now, but then how could she tell any of this to Manik? He had suffered so much in the past few days, in fact he still was suffering and yet he was doing this just to make her feel better. How could she simply snatch away the childlike joy he was deriving out of making her happy, by pulling him down to the harsh realities of his parents deeds.

It is always a struggle between truth and lies, yes Navya had been right, she should trust her love. But it wasn't about trust, it was about love. Just how far could you push a person, how much pain could you inflict on someone?

None of it had been her fault, neither his leaving, nor having Neel around. She could just tell everything and get done with it. But what would happen to Manik post knowing everything. Would he be able to trust anyone ever again. How could she tell him that not just his mother, even his dad had let him down.

She sighed "Its so beautiful Manik... its sooo beautiful,I think its way better than the scene from my ex-balcony, only it is a little less pretty than you."

"Nandini, you don't call a guy pretty for Gods sake?"

"I will call you pretty, I will u beautiful and cute and whatever I wish to, if you have a problem, plug in ear buds."

"Aaj kuch special hai kya? Itna dher sara pyaar? Or are you up to some kind of trouble again?" Her smile, he swore could light up his world. It was literally like the sun rising post a shower and all he could see were rainbows lying scattered. And boy, his girlfriend had a special talent when it came to crying, she could give new-borns a run for their tears. Sometimes he felt like she had hosepipes fixed to her eyes and her aiyappa made sure, they remained operational. But the good thing was, he was with her and every time those hose pipes would run loose, he would be there to fix them.

"Waise na I am hungry. Last kuch dinon se wo khana khake main thora bore ho gaya hun, so lets have something yummy today."

"What do you mean, ki I make you eat sara hua khana? Ok Mr. Malhotra, I am not feeding you any more."

"Aww, Nandu to bura man gayi, I didn't mean ki you cook bad, I mean chachi se to kaafi acha, but you know..main bas itna keh raha tha ki I am craving for something spicy."

"But the doctor has asked you not to, tum kisi ki baat nahi sunte Manik, why are you so hopeless?"

"Bas meri maa! Tum fir se suru ho gayi. Do all women come with this nagging gene?"

"I don't like you Manik, you are bad and horrible"

"Wow Nandini, tumhari dictionary mein adjectives itni jaldi change hoti hain. Abhi do minute pehle to I was cute and pretty and beautiful aur abhi abhi I became bad and horrible?"

"Yes, and you are saru and stubborn too..itne kaafi hai ya aur adjectives chahiye?"

And that's how they walked up to the open rooftop caf, which was another wonder in itself. And all along the way, they kept on fighting like teenagers. He had to tease her, knowing that she didn't like it and she had to make a face, knowing well that he was just kidding. After such a long time, they were behaving like their usual careless selves, their tensions & dilemmas forgotten for a while.

This ironically was the same place, where Manik had planned to bring Nandini after the annual function to propose to her. It hadn't happened then, and now they were here without a plan.

As they settled in the open patio restaurant, Manik ordered a bland pasta, thanks to Nandini's constant bickering, while Nandini was happy digging in her Chinese noodle bowl. Last time too she had ordered the same thing, but back then she had stomped out of the restaurant leaving the food untouched. Destiny had brought them at the same place once more.

"Manik, tumne desert nahi order kiya?" She suddenly remembered half way through her lunch.

"Sab main hi karun? Acha chalo, sundae? Brownie? Icecream?"

"One cheesecake for me and nothing for you. You are not allowed any sweets till you completely recover."

"What the hell Nandini, i deserve TLC n here u r getting it all plus the yummy food and desert. I am not playing, ok? "

"Awww my Manik baba... " she pinched his cheeks unpurterbed by the shocked glances of the fellow diners, totally emarrassing Manik "But you know what...this emotional blackmail wont help your cause.. No spice n no sweet."

Amazing is too less to describe this update. I felt like reading the written update of a S1 episode 👏. Nandini so strict with Manik about his diet 😊 and Manik equally determined to have his way 😉. Nandini calling him cute and pretty 😃. They landed up at the same resort where Manik wanted to propose, but now as a couple! 😳 Surely they fought, but as bf-gf 😊. And no spice or sweet for Manik? His gf will surely have some spicy comments about his attitude 😉 and she has this pouty pair of sweet lips ☺️. He will manage 😉. After such back-to-back lovely chapters, don't bring back Neel before Manik learns about him, from the diary or Nandini. Take care. ❤️
