CHAPTER 6

to say that manik was happy would be an uderstatement, coz manik was not just happy but extremely happy. he now understood what he read out of adolscent fascination what plato meant tosay when he said that love was a serious mental disease, and no doubt manik found it to be the most beautful disease. manik was late, and this led his all the time concerned frnd cabir to drop in at his house. where manik entered the house dancing and humming songs, taking the caretakers into a hug and shaking a booty with the guard, cabir on the hand was pacing to and fro and abusing manik now and end...and as soon as hesaw him, entering the house...DANCING...his blood boiled and what pissed him off was manik's that carefree attitude and that smile...oh that smile, how much cabir wanted to punch him on his face.

m:CABIR!!!!! kakke...tujhe idea nai hai aaj main kitna khush hoon

and manik grabbed cabir into a hug

c: haan woh toh dikh hi raha hai, kahan tha tu? yeh time hai ghar aane ka? meeting ke liye gaya tha na, aur mazze karke arra hai? teko pata hai duds kitni tensed thi...woh toh jhooth bolke sulwaya hai unhe, woh bhi neend ki goli deke, even ur dad had to go out...agar kuchh ho jata toh kisko approach karta main? kabhi socha hai?

m: yaar cabir tu chill kar, kuchh nai horra mujhe, aur mere mother india, ab yeh toh puchhle kyu hoon main khush?

c: kyu!!!!

m:main aur nan..nan..nan...

well cabir wasnt really interested in knowing what made manik so happy, provided that this foolish chap wudnt even feel little bit of shame in tagging a day THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE if he cud manage to buy his favourite chocolate, but the word NAN... made this situation a bit different, cabir knew about nandini and how much crazy manik was for her, everyone in his group did, which included his grandma

m:well, it seems its not what i feared it to be

and the next moment all manik knew was that someone picked him up and took few hasty rounds and someone had to be cabir

cabir msgd on the commom grp about the day's developments and everyone as expected were too happy, provided dhruv lost a bet with mukti...he thought nandini had frndzoned manik. after spending few hrs wid cabir, manik retired to his room whereas cabir left for his house

manik was sitting in his room and remembering everything...he cudnt stop smile now and then

MANIKS POV:

everything's gonna change now..tmrw's gonna be a new day, a beautiful one..I LOVE YOU NANDINI

NEXT DAY

the next day manik reached office way too early..he wanted to greet nandini first and of course he cudnt stop wait for her. it was almost 9 and manik's heart was beating really fast, 9 was the time when andini was supposed to come, and before manik cud blink twice it was 9, and his eyes dated towards the door, and as the door knob to the office twisted, even his heart took a somersault only to fell down straight on its face...it was the chai-wala... 9 sadly was his time too to reach the office...but manik was back being him...and his face and eyes were fixed to the door knob, and everytime the knob twisted, his heart sowcase its other gymnastic talents, only to fell down on its face.

it was extremely weird for manik, nandini was always on time..and exact dot time.. and here it was almost 10:30 and there were no signs of nandini."where are u nandini...tumhe bhi aaj hi late hona tha"..maniks heart screamed in a desperate attempt to reach nandini's heart, but alas, medical science wasnt that advanced that comunication between hearts cud be possible

manik tried hard to concentrate on his work...be patient but by the time it was 12 manik had lost it and he called the one of nandini's colleagues

col: sir this is the file u asked for

m:yeah, manik acted to have gone through it, yeah ok fine, u can leave

the girl had almost reached the door when he stopped

m:wait listen, send nandini in

col:sir nandini isnt here today

m:what!!how can she be so irresponsible, why is she not here

col:sir she called to inform that she is not keeping well, she is sick and wont be able to come for few days

this news blew manik away

m:ohh.. so.. when will she joi again

col:she didnt specify sir

m:and y m being informed so late?do u want to kiss ur job a bye bye?

col:sorry sir, it wont happen occur

m:better not, leave

manik acted pissed off in front of the assistant, but to be honest, he was hell scared...firstly bcoz nandini was unwell, and that was to much to take in, but on top of that,she didnt even inform him and this made manik insecure..."what if she was reconsidering her decision about them?

manik at last decided to call her, but to his dismay she disconnected it...now this surely raised his suspicion

and he did the very obvious thing, cal his mommy

m:cabir, yaar prblm hai

c:kya hua?

and manik narrated everything to him to which cabir laughed at as a hyena

c: dude chill!!!uski sach mein tabiyat kharab hogi and woh rest karri hogi isiliye phone kaat diya hoga

m:but inform toh karna chahiye tha

c:manik tum dono abhi itne close nai ho ki woh tujhe infrom karre, she must be feeling shy

but manik knew it as a fact that nandini was not like those girls who wud feel shy, he knew something was wrong but then also agreed wid cabir and so decided to got wid it

m:i think ur right i'll give it a break bye

the whole day amnik cudnt work and he was luking forward to when nandini wud return. 1 week passed and there were no signs of nandini,no calls, no msgs, not even to the office members, and on top of it she wud disconnect manik's call everytime and it didnt take much time for manik to realize that she finally blocked him, and then changed her number...even cabir was sure that something was wrong and feared that probably manik's doubts were true.

yhe sign of nandini' existence was the mail that she sent to manik's dad asking for a months leave and it didnt take manik much time to hack in and know that she wasnt out as she had stated, but was very much in mumbai

manik garbbed cabir and both of them left for nandini's house only to meet another shock. the door was locked. havimg no choice they asked her neighbours about her wherebaouts

n:arre woh toh 1 hafte se yahan nai hai, last tim woh yahan 22 april ko thi

m: yeh toh wahi din hai jab maine usse yahan chhoda tha

c:woh kuchh batake gai thi?

n:haan bola tha ki out of station jarri hain...fir tabse woh aai nai

c:manik shayad woh sach mein bahar gai ho

m:but woh ip address, usme saaf saaf likha tha ki woh mail mumbai mein se bheja gaya hai, or woh address ek cyber cafe ka hai

c:yeah.. chal abhi yahan se nikalte hai

m:hmm..

both manik and cabir were dead scared now, they knew something was way too fishy, and that probably thye'll have to involve the police as well

they were when cabir stopped near a small chemist shop, he needed cough syrup for his cold.the shop was on the outskirts of a chaul.manik was peeping out of the window when he saw something familiar, a familiar face and that face resembled to someone he could never forget-NANDINI!!!

m:CABIR!!!!...nandini

c:manik dont worry woh hame mil jayegi, tu aise

m:arre nai woh dekh nandini!!

c:what!

cabir turned his face and to his horror it indeed was nandini who was walking through the corridor, and then got into a room

manik's happiness knew no bounds, he was too happy, he had to meet her, hug her, scold her for scaring the hell out of him, kiss her to reassure she was fine...and above all, he needed answers...DESPERATELY!!!!!!!

c: manik, yeh nandini iss cahul mein kya karri hai?

m: iska jawab toh wahi de sakti hai. tu yahi ruk main uske paas jarra hoon

manik hurried into the chaul and knocked on the door of the room that nandini entered. nandini opened the door and as soon as she saw manik there her face got pale

n: manik!!!

m: haan manik

n: tum yahan kya karre ho?

m: yeh sawal toh mujhe puchhna chahiye nandini

n: manik, tum yahan kaise aaye?

m: tum yahan kya karri ho nandini?

n: manik plz leave

m: tumne mere sawal la jawab nai diya

n: i am nto liable to give u any answer, plz leave

m: no!!!

and manik forcefully entered the room, and nandini had no choice but to close the door

n: manik jao yaha se?

m: tumne jhooth kyu bola? itne dino se office kyu nai aai? aur tum apna ghar chhodke yahan chaul mein kyu rehri ho?

n:meri marzi, tumhe kya?

m: whats wrong with u nandini, i love u and i have every right to know whats going on in your life

n: manik u love me, i dont, so leave

m: what!!!kya bakwaas karri ho nandini, what nonsense is this?tumne mujhe kaha tha..

n: maine tumse kaha tha that i like when u try to flirt with me, i never said that i love u

m: nandini yeh bakwas bandh karro

n: manik main...

nandini was say something when her eyes fell on something, her eyes widened, she started sweating and she wen all pale

m: tum kya nandini?

n: shhh!!!dont say a word!!!come with me jaldi

and she dragged him inside

m: nandini kya karri ho tum?

n: shh!!! chup raho and let me do my work

she tookout a rope and tied manik's hands

m: nandini...yeh kya karri ho tum? mere haath

n: manik, trust me ok, plz

m: whats going on?

nandini did not answer him, she tied hi legs to the bed's leg and gagged him so that he cud not say a word or cud come out

n: manik plz do not say anything, koi awaz mat karna, kuchh bhi ho kuchh mat karna ok

just then there was a loud knock on the door

man: darwaza khol!!!khol darwaza sali khol

n: shit!!!manik even if i die out there do not make a noise, no matter what they do, hit me, kill me, abduct me or rape me...do not come out plz, mere liye

man: khol darwaza!!!!kholti hai ki ham darwaza kho ke aajaye

fear was written on nandini's face, and manik was baffled, he cudnt understand what was happening. nandini went near the door and took a deep breath, she slowly opened the door, when the men on the other side opened the door with a force and came inside

n: tum yahan kaya karre ho?

man: kya karre ho mtlb?

n: ek baari mein samajh nai ata?

man: aye...tameez, apne hone wale pati se tameez se baat karte hain?

manik was listening to everything and could see the men manhandling nandini, his blood boiled, he wanted to out and help her, but he cud not, nandini had tied him tightly
n: pati!!!my foot!

man: tch tch tch, tu abhi tak nai mani, teri shadi toh mere se hi hogi samjhi..

n: marke bhi nai karne wali main tujhse shadi...tujh jaise jahil aadmi se toh koi shadi na karre, main toh kabhi nai

nandini's reply raised the man's anger and came near her and squeezed her mouth and held her arm tightly

man: bass bahut ho gaya? yaad nai kya kiya tha maine tere parivark ke saath, tere inkar ke karan kya hua tha unke saath, nai chhodonga, ter baaki khandan ko bhi nai chhodonga main samjhi, chup chap mujhse shadi karle, rani ke tarah rakhoonga, rani ke tarah

n: mai tujhse nai darti hoon harshad!!!jo karna hai karle, ab mere paas khone ke liye kuchh nai bacha. tujhse shadi se badia toh main trainke aage kud ke jan de doon

THUD!!!!harshad slapped nandini and she fell down on the floor

h: teri itni himmat

he caught hold of her hair and pulled them making nandini squeal and scream

h: meri ek baat kaan kholke sunle, bahut ho gaya, bahut ho gaya ab, agar tune ab mujhse shadi nai ki na toh main zabardasti tujhse shadi karoongi, main zabardasti tujhpe apna haq jataonga, samjhi, abhi toh main ja raha hoon,parr wapas aaonga aur jawab mujhe haan hi chahiye!!!chalo!!!!

harshad left nandini's house with his men, leaving nandini crying in disgust and helplessness.

she got up and went near manik, she only opened his rope when she was sure harshad had left. as soon as nandini opened his rope, manik hugged her tightly and headed towards the door but nandini caught him on time

n: kahan jarre ho

m: uski himmate kaise hui yeh karne ki

n: manik bewakoof mat bano

m: r u kidding me, nandini what was that? kya horra hai tumhari life mein

n: sit!!!!

FLASHBACK

nandini was a brilliant student who used to live in delhi with her parents and younger sister. she was a student of delhi university, and may be joining DU was her biggest mistake, she came across harshad there who was a senior student and had been stuck in the college since 5 years, harshad got attracted to nandini and wud harras her, evertease her and pass lewd comments on her, even after continous complaints nothing happened and the one day harshad proposed nandini and she straight away said no to him. harshad cud not take this and started threatning her to rape her if she wud'nt marry her, but nandini did not budge and harshad did what he had said. he committed a rape, he did not rape nandini, but her younger sister who was a minor, nandini's sister got mentally unsound and soon committed a suicide. thi disturbed her family to immensely, nandini's father was a well known lawyer, he dragged harshad to the court but cud not win it due to lack of evidences against harshad, after 1 month of this case, nandini's father and mother died in a car accident. no doubt harshad did that, but there were no prooves against him, afterall he was the son of a powefull politician, nandini had to leave delhi in order to save herself and she stayed in nainital until harshad's men found her. fortunately harshad was found guilty of a murder and was imprisoned for 7 years. but nandini knew nainital was no longer safe so she came to mumbai, harshad's father was not politically strong in mumbai and so it was a safe place. there she met manik's father and got into the job

n: i met ur father, he gave me work so that i cud survive, nandini verma is not my real name, my real name was nandita arora and my parents called me nandini at home, i changed my name to save my self from harshad's men but all my certificates had my real name on them

m: so how did u?

n: ur father never asked me anything, i just told him that i had to hide my real identity if i wanted to live and he gave me the work

m: harshad ka 7 years ka imprisonment itni jaldi..

n: uski punishment puri nai hui hai, he got out o the gounds of improved behaviour just after 4 years

m: toh tum isi karan office nai arrithi?

n: the day u confessed ur feelings, uss din akhbaar mein ek column yeh news aya hua tha, a sort of arguement, if this was right or not, aur isiliye mujhe ghar change karna padha, taki harshad mujhe asani se dhoondh na paye, aur isiliye main office nai aai...
