Having read so many articles on this wanted to share some of my thoughts.
I think it is high time for most of the channels & PHs to rethink their strategy of long stretched serials. Even though I'm not from India have been a major Hindi serial fan & I feel over the years the quality of these drams have done down a lot. Many of them start with very good story lines & in the middle loose it completely & we as viewers are expected to watch garbage (excuse the slogan ) I've stopped watching so many series due to this.
Every creation needs time & effort coordination & so on .I feel in the current competitive commercial environment PHs do not get the time to give the 100 % quality. So we as viewers end up seeing bad story lines, improper editing, sounds etc. Creatives may not have a choice but to do this due to pressure from the channel? Even actors may feel undue pressure (have read a few voicing this ) Doing a serial is not a joke -So with schedule of 5 days a week for months will be like a rat race.
If you have a fixed time period with a fixed story line maybe this could be avoided. Have look at the Korean/Chinese /Turkish drams- It does not go on for years. But the end product is very good. Fixed time & story. What is the point of dragging something for the sake of it -purely on commercial lines-rupees & cents? Isn't there a shelf life for TV serials as well? If you have fixed time serials then all involved are more geared as to what needs to be expected. Also having a break in between, in case the serial to be extended as they do in lots of western drams. This will give the creative to do their homework & bring in more artistic ideas onto the table.
KY2 has been series that kept me going for this long even though it was not perfect. I Nearly gave up few weeks back. I'm still not too sure what to expect in S2 & I personally feel they should have wrapped it up when the show is on it's heights. This brings to my mind an old Turkish series Gummus ( staring Kvan Tatltu) which was the hype in Middle East around 2005. Similar to KY the story was very bold in the context of Middle East. The makers wrapped in spite of the immense popularity. May be the makers of the Indian TV industry can take a leaf from this & continue giving the audience some quality not quantity.
Hope the KY2 new season will bring something extraordinary for me to stick around. Keeping my fingers crossed.
