CHAPTER- 1

The Period We Shared.

10 APRIL 2015

She was lying on the back of the yellow truck, her body weak and fragile. Her face had marks of the tears of last night and dark circles surrounded her eyes. The wind was brushing against her much exposed body, and her hair were carelessly beneath her head in tangles. She was too sad to cry out loud anymore so she just lay there like a solid statue and let the wind dry her up. Her lips near a shade of pale pink. The only things that gave away that she was alive were the swift movement of her chest and the sound of her breathing. She would blink randomly after a few minutes, fathoming what she had lost. Maybe she had it wrong all this time and her empty heart could never be filled by his ingenious broken spirit. Maybe this yearning had nothing to do with him, and everything to do with her. She'd cried over a broken heart before. She knew what that felt like, and it didn't feel like this. Her heart felt not so much broken as just ... empty. It felt like she was an outline empty in the middle. The outline cried senselessly for the absent middle. The past cried for the present that was nothing.

The truck was moving, slowly down the cliff and towards the river. She didn't move even though the car kept getting closer to the edge, contempt on her face. Nobody would commit suicide if the pain of being inside herself, the agony of the sleepless, tortured hours spent watching the world get smaller and uglier, were bearable or could be relieved by other people telling her how they wanted her to feel. A depressed person is selfish because her self, the very core of who she is, will not leave her alone, and she can no more stop thinking about this self and how to escape it than a prisoner held captive by a sadistic serial killer can forget about the person who comes in to torture her every day. Her body is brutalized by her mind. It hurts to breathe, eat, walk, think. The gross maneuverings of her limbs are so overwhelming, so wearying, that the fine muscle movements or quickness of wit necessary to write, to actually say something, are completely out of the question.

ONE YEAR AGO

This is a young woman, probably about seventeen years old, who sits with an air of carefree confidence that is most noticeable in her serene brown eyes outlined with a dash of kohl. Soft face with rounded cheek bones, proportionally slim nose, high trimmed brows, soft pouty pink lips, and rounded chin is complimented by her easy, charming smile. Wondrous oceans of blue gaze out in playful curiosity as she smiles; Though, there is a hint of a wild spark lingering behind those lids. Nandani adorns jet black hair, groomed and shining brilliantly, which crops her gentle face; the mane glimmers down towards her shoulders where it it ends, with perfectly cut tips. The uniform hair spills down between her shoulder blades in bladed formation, the rest of it cropping in circular fashion towards her shoulders where the shortest strands just barely tickle the skin of her collar bone. This young woman has a soft neck and narrow shoulders that form into equally lithe arms and hands, but her midsection shouldn't go without notice. Overall her general shape is a toned, hourglass figure defining her chest and hips which are of moderate, if not winding 'definition'. Altogether her skin tone is a light & even tan lending her to porcelain glamour. She is a feathery woman, but owns to many womanly curves that are upheld with a firm youth that bargains the opinion she is, again, probably in her late teens.

If perfections could be personified, it would be in the form of Nandani Murti a girl who has everything figured out in her life. She was the most popular and most successful student in Shimla east high, a subject of every guy's attention and every girl's jealousy. She had a layer of confidence around her which came from the fact that she knew who she was.

The second psychology class of the year was just about to start and Nandani was equally excited and nervous. She had gone on to take this class against her parent's wishes and now she just had to do well. The teacher was going to choose only six students like every year for this class, and Nandani could give anything to be one of them. There were about twenty odd students who were there to apply, the assignment was simple- all of them had to write their thoughts about anything they find interesting in human nature. Nandani opened a piece of paper filled with notes for her speech and kept reading them until the teacher enter the room at which point there was complete silence in the room. Everyone took their seat and Mr Dubey started speaking.

"This is the most competitive class in the whole of the school. I choose only six students each year to explore the most amazing creature on the planet- Human Beings. In my whole career I have selected different kinds of individuals for this class, but there is one thing they all have in common- they were the most curious and excellence craving lot. I expect nothing but complete determination from all who are selected, once selected you will be pushed to the limit so if you are easily scared run away now. You must know nothing before you can learn something, and be empty before you can be filled. Is not the emptiness of the bowl what makes it useful? " He paused and looked at everyone. "So as the saying goes let the games begin." He said and sat down in ugly black chair, which he had specifically asked for when he joined the school five years ago.

One by one everyone started to show off their understanding of the human behaviour. Instead of complying with what Mr Dubey had said they tried to talk like professionals instead of students with excitement about the subject. Nandani couldn't help but laugh from the inside, at how little they all actually cared about the subject and how they had just copied someone's work into their mind instead of actually trying to think about the human nature. After some amazingly bad efforts from all the students, Nandani was last but one to come forward and speak. She looked at everyone with complete confidence, hiding her insecurities.

"Perfectly imperfect-

we have all heard that no two snowflakes are alike. Each snowflake takes the perfect form for the maximum efficiency and effectiveness for its journey. And while the universal force of gravity gives them a shared destination, the expansive space in the air gives each snowflake the opportunity to take their own path. They are on the same journey, but each takes a different path.
Along this gravity-driven journey, some snowflakes collide and damage each other, some collide and join together, some are influenced by wind... there are so many transitions and changes that take place along the journey of the snowflake. But, no matter what the transition, the snowflake always finds itself perfectly shaped for its journey." She paused and looked up. All were impressed other than one guy sitting at the last bench with his head down, uninterested. He was the only one who hadn't spoken yet, the sight of him ignoring her infuriated Nandani.

"I find parallels in nature to be a beautiful reflection of grand orchestration. One of these parallels is of snowflakes and us. We, too, are all headed in the same direction. We are being driven by a universal force to the same destination. We are all individuals taking different journeys and along our journey, we sometimes bump into each other, we cross paths, we become altered... we take different physical forms. But at all times we too are 100% perfectly imperfect. At every given moment we are absolutely perfect for what is required for our journey. I'm not perfect for your journey and you're not perfect for my journey, but I'm perfect for my journey and you're perfect for your journey. We're heading to the same place, we're taking different routes, but we're both exactly perfect the way we are." Still no reaction from him, now he was getting on her nerves.

"Think of what understanding this great orchestration could mean for relationships. Imagine interacting with others knowing that they too each share this parallel with the snowflake. Like you, they are headed to the same place and no matter what they may appear like to you, they have taken the perfect form for their journey. How strong our relationships would be if we could see and respect that we are all perfectly imperfect for our journey." She finished and took a deep breath. The small crowd in the classroom started clapping excitedly. The boy at the last bench finally looked up gave a smirk and looked away. Nandani ignored him and looked at her teacher who finally could see a real prospect for his subject. He shook hands with her and asked her to take her seat again.

"Last but not the least, at least I hope not Manik Malhotra." Mr Dubey said and the last bencher rose. He walked swiftly as if he owned the place. He wore a torn jacket and worn out clothes indicating his social backwardness. Most of the class was laughing at the thought of him ever getting selected but he didn't even look at anyone. He stood in front smiling and buried his hands in his jackets pocket. Even with the attire he wore he looked handsome in a strange manner, he wasn't self-aware. Even in his dull and irritated voice which bore a supremacy over others there was a charm. He had an aura of mystery that captivated anyone who looked him in the eye, a magnetic personality he was. In this school everyone who didn't knew his name which included Nandani till now, called him the freak. He never fitted in, always behaving oddly and staying away from anyone and everyone. You could never spot him at the parties or even at any school event and he rarely came to school. When he spoke he was calm and lost at the same time. Nandani was more than intrigued. It was the first time he was actually going to participate in anything normal.

"Sometimes the most remarkable things seem commonplace. I mean when you think about it jet travel is pretty freaking remarkable. You get in a plane it defies the gravity of an entire planet by exploiting a loophole with air pressure and it flies across distances that would take months or years to cross by any means of travel that has been significant for more than a century or three. You hurtle above the earth at enough speed to kill you instantly should you bump into something and you can only breathe because someone built you a really good tin can that seems tight enough to hold in a decent amount of air. Hundreds of millions of man-hours of work and struggle and research blood sweat tears and lives have gone into the history of air travel and it has totally revolutionized the face of our planet and societies.

But get on any flight in the country and I absolutely promise you that you will find someone who in the face of all that incredible achievement will be willing to complain about the drinks. For me that is human nature in a nutshell. We live in a culture of complaint because everyone is always looking for things to complain about. It's all tied in with the desire to blame others for misfortunes and to get some form of compensation into the bargain. I will end with my favourite quote ...God created the world in six days. On the seventh day, he rested. On the eighth day, he started getting complaints. And it hasn't stopped since." Every person present was stunned except for Mr Dubey he stood up and started clapping and everyone joined in, except for Nandani. She kept staring at his tall figure; he was still smiling at her. Like he had accomplished something by not letting her have the best speech.

"Bravo, excellent." Mr Dubey said and everyone was shocked because he never complemented anyone in front of the whole class. The bell rang and it was time to leave. All of the students got out of their disorientation quickly but Nandani took her time. She slowly and carefully got up and met up with her best friend who had been standing outside and waiting for her for the last five minutes.

"I will put the list of students with their partner name in the last period." Mr Dubey shouted out from behind.

"Manik wait," Mr dubey said as Manik was about to leave like the rest of them. "Have you given what I said a thought?" he asked hopefully.

"You say a lot of things which particular thing are you talking about right now?" Manik answered in his usual sarcastic and irritated tone.

"Ha ha very funny," Mr Dubey replied.

"Yeah I have given it a thought. I have set a concrete goal for myself; there is a girl she is smart and popular and everything you think I should be." Manik said his eyes unfocused and voice still uninterested.

"So you are going to ask her out right?" he asked Manik.

"Ask her out, that is so lame. I will have some fun first." Manik now had a smile on his face.

"What do you mean by fun?"

"FUN..."

😭that's exactly what I felt when I found out u had updated and not PM ed me 😭
while after reading the story I forgot all that crap and was totally lost in the story. It really intrigued me and I loved how u described their appearance. and honestly I liked both of their speeches. what I have always seen is that its the human nature that ruins the system but without we would've been nothing. anyways i was talking about the speech both were right according to my point of view but Manik was definitely more simple and precise and to the point, while I feel Nandini had prepared it like I'll say this... I'll say that.the first bit was...um...confusing need to know more to comment about that.what was with Manik and Dubey at the end?really eager to find out so update soon.don't leave a long year behindoh yeah plz pm meif ur busy then say so I'd not mind but don't ignore...feels bad
