CHAPTER 9

"A DAYOUT @ GOA"

The next morning:

It was already 9 in the morning and Nandini was still asleep on the bed. She didn't keep any alarm as there was no meeting today. She was disturbed by the constant ringing sound of Manik's phone. His phone was in the living room. She went there to take his phone but the call was disconnected. There were 4 missed calls from his mom. She looked here and there searching him and she heard the splashes of water from the washroom. The phone rang again. Nandini heisted to receive, but she thought his mom will be worried and received the call.

Anjali: (as soon as the she received the call) Hello! Golu !!! I have been calling you since 15 minutes, why weren't you answering my call? Anyways how was your meeting?? And how did Nandini do the presentation?? You said she was nervous about the presentation?

Nandini: Aunty aunty it's not Manik, actually sir is taking bath. It's Nandini here.

Anjali: Sorry beta, I thought it was Manik.

Nandini: That's ok aunty. You needn't be sorry.

Anjali: Then Nandini, how was the meeting??

Nandini: Good aunty, it went on very well.

Anjali: Oh, that's great. And what about today, it's already 9 and Manik is taking bath now!! Aren't you people getting late??

Nandini: Actually Mr.Sharma canceled today's meeting.

Anjali: Oh, really. Then what's the plan for today?

Nandini: (in an excited tone) Shopping !

Anjali: (shocked) Shopping??? With Manik, really?

Nandini: (confused) Yes aunty. Any problem?

Anjali: No no, there is no problem. But Manik hates shopping. Only I know how difficult to make him to accompany me for shopping.

Nandini: (laughs) I know aunty, he shared about his hatred for shopping. But somehow he agreed to accompany me.

Anjali: What do these guys know about the fun we have in shopping, they only know how to tease us. By the way, you are a South Indian right??

Nandini: Yes aunty, but how do you know?

Anjali: Manik told me. And I used to buy some really good sarees in Goa, you should visit the shop. I hope you will love it.

Nandini: Okay aunty, sure.

Meanwhile, Manik came out of the washroom after taking bath.

Nandini: (seeing Manik coming out of the bathroom) Sir came, I'll give the phone to him.

Anjali: Yeah okay dear !

Nandini: (to Manik) Sir, your mom. Actually sir, your mom was calling continuously so I thought I can answer the call.

Manik gestured to her saying "No problem" and took the phone to talk to his mom. Nandini went inside the washroom to refresh.

Manik: Hey mom!! Sorry, I was taking bath, so only couldn't pick your calls

Anjali: That's okay Golu !!

Manik: Don't call me that mom, please. I have grown up now.

Anjali: But you are still a kid for me. Leave that, now say me, I heard you are going for shopping. Is it true?

Manik: (stammers) Yeah mom, actually...

Anjali: Hmm... I don't need any explanations. Just enjoy your day. Bye.

Manik: Bye mom.

Anjali hung up. Nandini came out of the washroom and saw Manik.

Nandini: Sorry sir, I answered your call without your permission.

Manik: Actually Nandini, I have to thank you for answering the call, otherwise my mom would have come to Goa to check if I was okay.

Nandini: Your mom is very sweet...

Manik just nodded his agreement. He knew if he talks more deeply about his mom, she will remember about her parents and get sad. So he remained silent.

Nandini: (smiling naughtily) "Golu", nice name sir.

Manik: Hey stop calling me that.

Nandini: Golu, how cute..

Manik: Stop it Nandini, please.

Manik made a cute angry pout.

Nandini: Okay okay. (catching her ears) Sorry !

Manik smiled back.

Nandini: But why does your mom call you like that?

Manik: (a little angry) I was little fat when I was young. Not fat exactly, a little chubby. So my mom used to call me like that.

Nandini tried hard to control her laughter seeing the cute angry kid.

Manik: (trying to change the topic) I think you should go and freshen up it's already going to be 10..

Nandini: Hmm... Okay, Mr. Golu Malhotra.

Saying this she ran into the washroom and slammed the door before Manik could catch her.

After 20 minutes Nandini got ready and came out. She was wearing a lemon yellow top with her jean. Manik had already ordered the breakfast for both of them. They had their breakfast, in a complete silence. Then they left for the mall. The mall was not too far from where they stayed, so they decided to go by walk. She was completely enjoying the weather outside. She turned to see Manik, but he turned his face other side showing his fake anger.

Nandini: Are you still angry on me, for calling you Golu, seriously??

Manik didn't reply anything and continued to walk. Nandini felt very bad by his silence.

Nandini: I am sorry. (no reaction)

Nandini: I am apologizing na, then what? (still no reaction)

He continued to walk, but she stood right in the place where they were. He took some more steps and noticed that Nandini wasn't beside him. He immediately turned back and got a relief after seeing her standing at some distance. She was standing there with a sad face. He moved towards her and raised his eyebrows, as if asking "What".

Nandini: (with a sad pout) If you are not talking with me, then I don't want to go to shopping. I am going back to resort.

Saying so, Nandini turned back to leave, but Manik stopped her by holding her wrist. She turned and saw him who was trying hard to control his laughter.

Nandini: (little irritated) Why are you laughing now?

Manik: Well, you had so much fun in teasing me na, so I thought of teasing you for some time. See your face.

He began to laugh. She glared at him.

Manik: Okay okay, fine. You teased me, I teased you back. Now we are equal. Come let's go now.

Saying this Manik pulled her by catching her hand but she didn't move. She stood there still glaring at him.

Manik: Its ok if you don't want to go to shopping, come we'll go back to resort then.

Nandini: No no, I have to go to shopping. Come !!

Manik smiles and they start to walk again. He grabbed her hand tight whenever they want to cross the roads. Nandini felt secured and happy by these gestures. Finally they reached the mall.

Nandini: (looking around) Wow!! The mall is just awesome.

Nandini started to walk inside excitedly. Manik grabbed her hand and stopped her.

Manik: Nandini!! Stop. Don't go anywhere without informing me. The mall is crowded, so stay with me.

Nandini released her hand from his grab and nodded her head. She went to the saree shop, which Anjali said. She was randomly looking at the sarees. Manik stood beside her. He was just staring at the confused face of Nandini. She really had a difficult time in selecting the sarees. Nandini took a white sari with a golden border for Amms. Then she took an orange saree with lot of jhumki works, that is for Chachi. She then took two sarees in her hands, a blue one and another red one. She was hell confused to select one, as she liked both the sarees very much. She then turned to Manik who was looking at her and she asked his suggestion. He without a second thought, selected the red saree, as red was his favorite color. She then gave the three sarees to salesman and said to pack it. Meanwhile Manik got a call from Cabir. He said Nandini to be in the same place and he will be back in few minutes. He went out to attend the call.

Manik: Hey Cabir what's up?!?

Cabir: Hey Manik, did I disturb you?? I mean you'll be in the meeting...

Manik: No no, the meeting was canceled. So myself and Nandini came for shopping...

Cabir: What??!! You and shopping are like cat and mice na. How's this possible?

Manik: lol! very funny...

Cabir: No seriously, you are shopping with a girl!! I mean is everything okay with you??

Manik: Yup, what's wrong with me.

Cabir: Wait, let me guess... Something something??

Manik: What something something??

Cabir: I think something something is between you and her. I saw the spark in your eyes at airport itself.

Manik: Stop it yaar, nothing like that. But u know what, I like it when she is beside me, I can feel an unknown happiness around me...

Cabir: ahem...ahem... I know... (the call gets disconnected)

Manik: Hello hello... (he found that his phone was out of battery and it got switched off)

He turned back and his eyes fell on a beautiful red with black netted saree in the display of another shop. He went inside the shop and asked the salesperson to pack it. He got the bag and went to the shop where Nandini was waiting. He looked around but could not find her. He inquired the salesman there, but couldn't figure out where she was. His heart started pounding. He didn't know where he should search her, as the mall was really big with numerous shops and it was crowded too. He tried to call her but then realized his phone had no battery. For a moment Manik felt blank and various thoughts jumped into his mind which made him more frightened. For the next half an hour he was swapping between different shops and floors. He was tired and for a moment he felt very irresponsible. He then went towards the food court of the mall. There was a washbasin there. Manik splashed some water on his face and looked at the mirror that was above the washbasin and recalled what just happened. Through the mirror he hardly saw a hand with plaster but couldn't see the face clearly due to the crowd. Then he turned towards that side and after trying hard he saw her face and a smile of relief came on his face. He ran towards her and saw her, who was sitting on a table with hand in her head.

Manik: (standing in front of her) Nandini, what are you doing here? (He almost shouted, hardly thinking about the people around)

Nandini lifted her head and was happy to see Manik. She stood up.

Manik: (grabbing her by her shoulders close to him) Have you lost it Nandini??? You have any idea how I was searching for you, all around the mall? What if something happened to you? I told you to stay in the same place till I was back, wasn't I loud and clear??? Answer me Nandini, I am asking you something.

A drop of tear rolled down from Nandini's eye. Manik saw this and loosened his grip on her. She then handed him a bag to him. He got the bag and looked what is inside. He found a white shirt.

Manik: What's this?

Nandini: (in between her sobs) I did not wanted to sneak out of the shop. But I saw this shirt in display in the next shop. I know you hate shopping, but you came for me. So I thought I should buy you something and so... (she couldn't complete her sentence) I tried to call you, but your phone was switched off.

Tears were continuously flowing from her eyes. She was continuously looking down while speaking. Manik understood that he reacted a bit too much.

Nandini: Sorry... I didn't mean to make you suffer... I am...

Before she could complete her sentence, Manik hugged her tightly and consoled her. Even she was very scared after getting lost. She rested her head on his chest and tried to calm herself.

Nandini: I am really sorry...

Manik: Sshh...You needn't be sorry at all. Actually I am sorry, I shouldn't have yelled at you like that. But I was worried of losing you.

Nandini was stunned hearing those words from Manik, but she didn't react. They broke their hug and she wiped her tears. Both of them sat down on the table. She felt better but tears were still rolling down her eyes.

Manik came back with a coffee and gave it to her. She got it. He also gave a tissue to wipe her tears. When she was about to wipe her tears, she saw something written in it, "I hate tears, Smile please.. 😊" She saw that with a blank expression and kept it aside.

Manik: Well, I found you but I lost something else after finding you.

Nandini: What??

Manik: Only you can find it...

Nandini: Yeah ok, please tell me what it is.

Manik: Promise me you'll find it for me...

Nandini: Okay, I promise you. What did you lose?

Manik: Your smile!!

Nandini: Huh??

Manik: Yup, I lost your smile somewhere (saying this he pretended to search in and around the bag, under the table etc)

Nandini smiled a little on his action.

Manik: (pointing towards her face) I found it !! Keep smiling like this.. By the way I'll treat you today for the lunch, in return of making you cry. So you can order whatever you want.

Then both had their lunch and then continued the shopping. Nandini bought a clutch for Navya, coolers for Aryaman and a watch for Abi. She also bought a stole for Shreya, as she is her new best friend. She shopped for everyone except for herself. It was 4 in the evening when both of them came back to their resort. Manik threw himself on the sofa and was watching TV along with Nandini. She was still little upset due to the scene happened in the mall, so Manik decided to lighten up her mood.

Manik: So get ready, let's go.

Nandini: Where sir?

Manik: That's a surprise! You go and get ready.

Nandini: But sir...

Manik: I accompanied you on shopping na, now you have to accompany me.

Nandini: Okay.

Nandini came out after getting ready. Manik got up and looked at her from top to bottom. She wore a pink T-shirt with some flowery design on it and a three fourth jeans. And Manik changed into a bright red tee and white shorts .Both of them went towards the seashore.

Manik: So this is your surprise. I know you love the beach.

Nandini became so much happy seeing the beach. She always liked beach since her childhood. She gazed over the sea, feeling the faint breeze against her face, with her eyes shut, and the white sand gave warm, between her bare toes. The place was beautiful beyond belief. Manik sat on the sand and gestured Nandini to take a place. She sat beside him. She saw few children playing in the waves and moved towards them. She started to enjoy with the kids like a kid. He was admiring the way she was playing with the kids, building sand castles with them and cutely cursing the waves for destroying the castle. She waved to Manik and gestured him to join them, to which he happily agreed. They both started to play in the water, forgetting themselves. Both of them fell into the water and got fully drenched.

Manik: (getting up) Oh shit! Nandini, look at your bandage it's all wet. We need to change it immediately.

Both of them waved to the kids and went back to the resort. They changed their clothes and went to the hospital to change her plaster.

@The hospital:

Manik: Doctor, her plaster is all drenched. We need to change it immediately.

Doctor: Let me see. And you please wait outside.

Manik came out of the room and took a seat outside. Meanwhile the doctor plastered Nandini's hand with a new one. He went out to meet Manik.

Manik: Is she okay? Is the dressing done??

Doctor: Yes, your wife is absolutely fine...

Manik: (smiling a bit) Sorry, you are mistaken she is not my wife.

Doctor: Oh I am sorry, seeing your worry for her, I thought you were her husband.

Manik: Thats's okay dr, no problem.

Nandini who was standing near the door overheard their convo. She felt a little weird of Manik's over protective nature towards her, but convinced herself by saying that he would always help all the people around him, so he is doing just the same with her. She then came out and both of them came back to their resort. It was 7 in the evening. They had to board the flight by 10. They started their packing. In next half an hour they were done with the packing. She then went to Manik and gave him the red saree she bought. He was confused.

Manik: Nandini, FYI (For Your Information), I don't wear sarees.

Nandini: Ha ha ha, very funny. This is not for you, it's for your mom.

Manik: My mom?

Nandini: Yeah, after speaking to her in the morning, I thought I should gift her something. She is very sweet 'unlike you'.

She said the last two words in a low pitch but it was loud enough that Manik could hear it. He just gave her a cute glare and before he could say something, Nandini's phone rang. She took her phone and came out.

Nandini: (on the phone) Hey Aaru!!

Aryaman: Hi Nandu, are you done with the packing??

Nandini: Yup, almost done!!

Aryaman: Navya told that you did not want us to come to the airport to pick you up?

Nandini: Yes, I told her. The arrival will be late in the night, so I will come with my sir. He will drop me home.

Aryaman: Are you sure?? You have no problem to come with him right?

Nandini: No baba, I'll come safely, you don't worry.

Aryaman: Then okay. See you soon. Bye !

Nandini: Bye !!

While Nandini was busy in the phone, Manik silently slid the saree which he bought, in her suitcase. He closed it and smirked. Then they both checked out the resort and reached the airport.
