Chapter 10
Once Manik left, Nanidni dew the curtains and climbed back under her duvet. She needed space, time and lots of coffee but first she needed to sort the mess in her mind. Manik had been a constant in her life. Sharing a bed with him, it came to her naturally now. Nothing out of the way they did for each other but something that a young boy had assumed was appropriate to when he saw someone hurt.
Spending nights tangled together was almost like a toddler did with his teddy. The intensity of what Manik had confessed last night hit her like a speeding train and tears started swelling up in her eyes.
Manic had strong feelings for her but he had never confessed them until he actually saw her with someone else so it was either that or he couldn't keep it in anymore or that he feared he'd lose her, the later seemed impossible. Replaying his words again and again in her mind again and again she tried to calm her panic stricken heart. Cabir had warned him; surely Cabir had been protective of her enough to fend off any guy who came closer to her in any way. Nandini knew Cabir feared what happened with her father would repeat. She needed to talk to him but knowing her brother, right now wasn't the right time.
Manic was in love with her. He had been since forever and Nandini was stunned. She remembered a time she'd had a crush on him and had confronted Navya about it. It was around the time she was sixteen and at that time she thought she would break if he didn't have the same feelings for her so she buried those deep inside her. She told Navya soon that she was over him but now that Nandini thought about it, she wasn't actually over him. Maybe she felt something for him too.
Her phone buzzed breaking her trance. It was a text message from an unknown number.
Free for lunch?
-Rian
Nandini hit her palm on her forehead cursing herself. Rian was going to take her lunch, but she thought it was supposed to be on Sunday. Suddenly, she didn't want to go anymore. Rian seemed perfect, he was sweet. But she hardly knew him and with what was going on in her head right now, although she would have loved some distraction, she didn't think it would be wise to go on a date with any guy.
Manik's POV
Manik entered his room from his window like he did every day. He ruffled the duvet on his bed until it looked like he'd slept in it and then unlocked the door. He went to the living room sure enough to see his mother either reading the newspaper or engrossed in some work.
"Morning kid." His mom said without looking up.
"Morning ma." He said and plopped onto the couch, turning on the tv with the remote. He put on some music channel and started humming along with the tune. He didn't do that usually, normally he would just go in the kitchen, have his breakfast then head back to Nandini's house to annoy her but today he was having a headache, pretty sure that those were yesterday night's alcohol effects. He remembered telling Nandini the truth. At first he thought it would ruin everything. She would stop talking to him and would cut off all ties with him. But so far, she had done nothing of that sort. It was all getting so complicated.
He told Nandini he was in love with her and about cabir knowing it, she took it in a very calm way but he knew right now she must surely be pondering over it.
Still singing along the song playing on tv, Manik recalled a certain day from his childhoold. He and cabir were twelve years old. Nandini's father had still been living with them till then and Nandini would still be locked in her room scared when her father would return from work. She was hardly 10. Their bedroom windows were facing each other with a distance of hardly hundred yards in between which the three of them would play in daytime. Nandini would usually just be swinging on the make-shift swing Manik and Cabir made for her with a tyre and a few ropes, the two boys would just play football. That one time Cabir saw Manik staring at Nandini for a very long time, he called Manik to a side and asked did he have a problem with her. Manik replied in negative, "She's actually really nice." Manik said.
That instant Cabir got hold of Manik's collar and said angrily, "Manik, that is my little sister and I will not have anyone playing with her. Stay away."
"But I haven't even done anything Cabir, why are you getting so angry?" Manik tried to sound innocent.
"Manik, we're not kids, we're old enough to know what attraction is and clearly you better than me." He said looking back and forth between manic and a very dreamy Nandini.
That was when Manik decided to not tell Nandini anything ever until he got her brother's approval. He knew they went through a tough time at home and Cabir was only himself around Manik. Cabir and Nandini were in a fragile situation and at that time, Manik didn't want to risk losing either of them.
But now she knew; now finally she knew everything and he felt a mixture of emotions. He was glad she knew everything at the same time he was afraid of what she'd think of him or how she would react when her head finally wrapped around the fact that Manik was smitten by her for almost a decade. Seemed like a very long time suddenly.
Manik got off the couch and was about to go for a bath when his phone started ringing. Caller id showed Cabir's name. Manik's heart skipped a beat fearing that Nandini would have told him everything, he gathered his guts and answered it.
"Bro, I don't care if you're having the worst hangover ever but we have a concert tonight. Mukti managed to get us a gig so we're performing at the Hard Rock today. Get your ass over to Dhruv's studio, we better start practicing."
"Cool, let me just freshen up and think of the songs to be performed. I'll pick you in half an hour."
"Okay. Get your extra guitar picks in case anything."
Manik mumbled an okay and hung up and then started laughing.
She didn't tell him! Nandini hadn't told Cabir anything which somehow gave Manik hope but he didn't want his expectations to be better than reality so he tried not to think about it, but he failed.
She was the only thing on his mind till he finally met Cabir, seeing his face, he didn't even dare to think about Nandini because last time Cabir sensed something like that, Manik got a punch and a cut on his lip. Which Cabir called his punishment for his closeness he was to Nandini outside the college canteen.

Also, if you're wondering. My adorable twin brother was the inspiration for Rian's character, so no I will in no way let that character have any fishy secrets.
