Chapter 6.

Nandini felt suffocated. The arms around her felt familiar but not familiar enough to make her comfortable. She looked up breathing heavily at her best friend who looked concerned for her.
"What happened? Why are you running around the hallways?" Navya asked her.
Nandini mustered all her will power and slowly stood up getting out of the embrace.
"Nothing Navya, I think I must have had something bad for breakfast so I felt a bit uneasy" Nandini gave a fake smile.
"And running around here helps that?" navya asked quizzically.
"Very frankly, yes. I thought either I'd end up puking or it'll settle down."
Nandini lied with ease, but why she lied that she wasn't sure. She could have told Navya that she's seen Manik's tongue down a girl's throat and that grossed her out but she didn't. What was going on with her?
"Why didn't you meet me at the lockers?" Nandini asked changing the topic.
"Oh my! Didn't you check your phone? I told you that Harshad took me out for breakfast since you didn't come! Thank you so much for denying the ride Nandini!" Navya hugged her and Nandini just responded with a pat on Navya's back.
"So you're not mad at me?" she asked still curious.
"What? No! In fact don't mind me being rude but he insisted that I call you to but I wanted to be alone with him. I'm glad you said no, unknowingly you did a great thing for me." Navya's wide grin made Nandini happy for her but Nandini found this a bit odd. It was unlike Harshad to be so civil to her, he had actually never really talked to her but every time he came near the two of them to talk to Navya, he'd either give weird looks to Nandini or he'd pay no heed to her presence
"Well, I'm glad that you're not mad at me." She really was glad, Navya was pretty much her only friend.
"Let's go or we'll be late for our classes." Navya said and walked off ahead of Nandini.

It was almost 1:30 when the two girls finally got a break for the tedious lectures.
"Why the hell would they professors think that all lectures being held continuously is a good idea? Do they want to kill us by slowly torturing?"Navya was raged because she had actually said no to Harshad for the first time when he texted her to meet him in the middle of lecturers.
"It's okay Navya, this is only for today. You'll be find tonight. come over, Cabir is throwing one of those weekly parties and I couldn't be more bored." Nandini droned on in boredom.
"Yes! Amazing idea, please can you invite Harshad also! We've never been to a party together" navya was literally in the opposite mood, she was super excited.
Nandini was a bit skeptic about this, Cabir's reaction to Harshad picking her was not the one she'd expected and calling him over to their house didn't seem like a very good idea.
"I'll have to ask Cabir. It's his party and I never actually invited anyone apart from you."
"Oh c'mon! It's your house also! You can invite anybody you want!" Navya was insisting.
Nandini thought over it. Harshad had never actually done anything to her so she had no point of holding grudges or even avoiding him for any reason.
"Okay, fine. Get him along. I'll handle Cabir and Manik."
The minute she took it name it hit her like a punch in the gut. She didn't like what she saw that much she realised by now. Why? That she was herself confused about.
Nandini and Navya were sitting in their usual spot in the canteen when a bunch of girls came and sat on the table opposite to theirs. Nandini overheard one of the girls saying, " oh my god, Manik was sooo good! I was actually dazed when he called me to the corner, but he has his own amazing tricks."
Another one asked her excitedly, "Why didn't you get him along right now then?"
"Because he suddenly left me hanging there and ran towards somebody. I actually couldn't understand what happened until I saw him retrieving."
The girl saw Nandini and immediately her eyes widened recognizing her. She leaned towards her friend and whispered something in her ear; the girls went on whispering something to each other and were giving mean looks to Nandini. One of them wearing a crop top and shorts said, "Seriously, he left YOU for HER!" Emphasizing that she found her friend way better than Nandini .
Nandini rolled her eyes. She had never bothered with others comments about her; she always wore a pair of jeans or leggings and short kurtis to college which actually got her too many glares which really made Cabir mad.
"Just ignore them Nandini" Navya said showing them the finger.
"Always have Navya." Nandini chuckled under her breath.
"What's so funny? Care to share?" A voice from behind her cut in the middle of their conversation.
"If only I was brought up that way. I'd rather not." Nandini said curtly dismissing Manik.
"Can I talk to you for a minute? Alone." Manik asked but without waiting for her response grasped her hand and pulled her out of the canteen. The girls on the other table and Navya both were left with their jaws wide open.

Nandini pulled away from Manik as soon as they were out of the canteen and in an almost deserted hallway.
"What is it now?" she asked him annoyed.
"Why'd you run away? I tried to come behind you also."
"Well, I didn't tell you to come, did I?
"No, you didn't but I've always come behind you, haven't I?
Nandini was silent for a moment then decided to walk away but he again grasped her forearm and pulled her to him. She almost fell against his chest but he held her waist to keep her steady, she was close enough for his lips to almost touch her forehead. He gave her a swift peck on her forehead and then looked at her.
"Now tell me." He said softly leaning against the wall and holding her close.
"What do you expect me to do when I see two people making out? Stand there and watch or turn the other way round?" she asked sarcastically.
He ruffled his hair looking like a child caught up stealing cookies and gave a shy smile, "Did it gross you out too much?"
"You gross me out too much. God knows what I did in my previous life to end up with bhai and you." She rolled her eyes now really annoyed, she just wanted to leave.
"I don't know about you but I surely must've been one amazing person to get you in this life." He winked and she smacked his arm with her free hand.
"Ok. So we're done talking right? Now let me go." She said trying to free herself from his iron-like grip.
"I'm never going to let you go." He said coming dangerously close to her and slightly bending so their eyes would be on the same level.
"Manik." Nandini was getting restless. Not the kind she felt when people invaded her personal space, this was different. She liked this restlessness.
"What?" he said moving back and she finally exhaled a breath she didn't know she'd been holding. Suddenly, she wanted him to be that close again though she was sure she wouldn't say so even on her death bed.
"Get your dirty hands off me before I get one of your STDs" she said instead.
"You know STDs don't pass on just by holding hands right?" his hand moved down towards her fingers and intertwined with hers. It gave her a warm feeling of satisfaction but she didn't ponder on it and immediately took her hand back.
"I don't care, if I'm near you for even a minute more then I'm sure I would catch something dirty from that mouth that goes on millions of female bodies." She spat those words like venom and she wanted him to be hurt, he deserved to be emotionally hurt for doing all that.
"But you're the only one that counts." Manik was still talking in a very soft voice, his voice changed when she was the only one around. From arrogant stud it became caring guy and as much as Nandini liked it, at this moment she just wished he was the arrogant one.
"Stay away Manik." She whispered and finally walked off back into the canteen leaving him alone in the hallway smiling.
"You don't mean that my love." He almost shouted and Nandini blushed. To her astonishment she blushed and she felt the warmth in her cheeks. Thankfully he wasn't around to see it but she was sure more than 90% people in the canteen heard it considering that almost every girl in the canteen was shooting daggers with her eyes at Nandini.
Nandini just shook her head in exasperation and sat opposite to Navya who still to Nandini's annoyance had her jaw hanging and eyes wide open.

"So are you and Manik Malhotra like a thing?" One of the girls who was earlier whispering about Nandini asked her.
"I don't really know about that but I do know that Manik Maholtra is MY thing." Nandini sneered back at the girl emphasizing on the my'. Nandini somehow felt the need to make it clear that he was still hers no matter what he did and so she said no.
The girl just shook her head and went back to gossiping with her friends. From the corner of her eye Nandini saw Manik go and sit on his table at the end of the canteen, she looked there and found Cabir looking at her with narrowed eyes and an angry look. When he saw her notice him, he immediately looked away and started talking to the rest of the people.
