He already knows he is in Love with her...remember the scene where he says "you dont give up on me...thats why..."...he and she both realise how the sentence ends and look away...he knows that he loves her but doesnt want to say it aloud to himself and to her...maybe because of his bad experience with his parents...he is afraid of saying it aloud even to himself for some reason...I think only Nandhu being in extreme danger or doing something that would heal his wounds stopping him...might make him overcome his fear and say it aloud to her and as well as to himself...

this is what i thought...so as u said...he has to understand that he love her but i think he ll realize it when either ahe is in danger or if he feels that someone else will snatch her from him...n i think this is what the next track of new entry can turn the story
