Isn't that what a traditional courtship period is all about...the time before officially tying the knot...isn't it all about learning?? Time to get to know each other beautifully, intimately. Somehow my heart has always equated their strange friendship with a courtship, the period of maximum growth in a relationship!!
Learning...learning to understand what is said and also what is unsaid. Learning to read the silences, learning when to say and what to say, and most importantly what not to say. Learning, to put the other person, his/her needs before yours. Learning to let ego and pride take a back seat. Learning to listen, learning to trust, learning when to hold on and when to let go. Learning to forget right and wrong, and to just be there when you are needed. Learning to lend your unconditional support and learning to take it unashamedly, to lean on uncaringly, shamelessly.
They say love and life are the biggest teachers. Life has already taught Nandini and especially Manik a lot, now it's love's tutorial they are sitting through. Life made them human, love is making them humane. Life taught them how to be tough, now love is teaching them how to revel in softness. Tides and times taught them how to be independent, adoration is now teaching them how to depend on each other. Circumstances programmed them to speak up and be heard, love is designing them to simply listen.
How gorgeous this whole process is!! Nandini was so hurt by his words, and Manik so furious that she was stubborn enough to ignore them. He reluctantly storms after her, starting off where he had left. His anger, frustration, ego all evident in his refusal to apologize or back down. And then he looks at her...
And everything negative just drains out, at the sight of her tear streaked face, her crestfallen and dejected visage...and he can think of nothing to say. He just stares for a moment, unsure and then decides to join her on the stairs. His realization that she just needs him and nothing else matters. Gradually inching closer, trying to offer her comfort through his mere presence. Trying to tell her with his bulk that he was there, by her side. Holding her hand, reassuring her that he will always hold her, his precious precious Nandini. Offering his shoulder, his unwavering, unrelenting and unconditional support through whatever life throws at them.
Nandini...leaning on him, without any hesitation, without any doubts or questions. Simply putting her head on his broad and strong shoulder, her life in his hands. Her trust, her dependency on him, making such a beautiful picture. She needs him, always and does not feel any weakness in relying on him. He is hers...her safe haven, her sanctuary from this world. He is the only right when everything goes wrong. Her pillar of strength, when her world crumbles. Her beacon in a stormy sea, whom she might not heed, yet he will lead her way. He holds her when the storms brew, and all hell breaks loose. She knows come what may, he will always remain her knight in shining armor, the slayer of her demons.
He did not say it right the first time, and she did not bother to hear him right either. But does that really matter?? Mistakes are a part of life, and they are learning to deal with them, together. He wanted to protect her from the world and she wanted to make her own mistakes. He is learning to let go and she is learning to hold on. Manik is learning to curb and control, be it his temper or his ego and she is learning to sail free, Manik being the wind in her sails. Manik does not want her disillusioned and Nandini does not want him disturbed. For the first time ever, they are ready to accept defeat, just so they can see the other win. What a heart warming picture they make, sitting on the steps they are gradually learning to climb, hand in hand, shoulder to shoulder!!
Love...is such a beautiful learning process!!
