Part 2:

Manik woke up from a deep slumber. Instinctively he reached out his arm to his side to cuddle Nandini, but instead of his wife, he touched a pillow instead.

He looked at the empty space beside him, puzzled. Most of the time they eat breakfast together in bed.

Oh well, she probably had to catch up on her readings. She was probably in her study or in the library. If she was in either place, she definitely wouldn't want to be disturbed.

His stomach grumbled. Manik realized that he was very hungry. He decided to go to the kitchen and eat breakfast there. Somehow he didn't want to eat breakfast in bed without his wife.

Manik got out of the bed and went to the bathroom. He gargled and put on a dark blue silk bathrobe. Then he walked down the wide hallways and went down the stairs. As he neared the kitchen, he smelled the wonderful and delicious aroma of blueberry waffles.

When he entered the huge kitchen, he was surprised to see Nandini sitting at her seat. A feast for a breakfast was laid out on the table - waffles, pancakes, bread, butter, pastries, crepes, orange juice, and coffee.

Nandini - already dressed smiled at him and said, "Good morning, hon. I prepared breakfast myself."

Manik went over to Nandini and kissed her on the cheek. "Good morning to you too," he said as he sat down on his seat. "Your cooking looks great. Whats the occasion?" he asked.

"What do you mean, what's the occasion?"

"Well, I think you wouldn't prepare so much food if there was no occasion, " he said after he took a bit of his favorite blueberry waffles. Then he frowned. "Is the gang coming over to visit? You could have warned me," he said.

Nandini frowned too. " They are not coming." There was a pause. Then she said, " You really don't know if there's an occasion today?"

Manik made a huge show of thinking deeply, then he shook his head. "No. Why don't you tell me? Or did you just feel like making breakfast today? I must say, the food is really great," he said sincerely.

To Manik's surprise, Nandini stood up from the table and said coldly, " Well, if you don't know then I am not going to tell you. I am leaving then. I have to go shopping with the girls."

" What the hell-" Manik never got to finish his sentence. Nandini had almost ran out of the room.

He thought over and over again the conversation he just had with Nandini. Had he said something to offend her? He was starting to get annoyed. Nandini could be dramatic sometimes. Then he suddenly remembered something...something terribly important.

Manik slapped himself on the forehead. " How can I be so stupid?" he asked himself aloud. No wonder Nandini was angry. " Of course today is the day," he mumbled.

He just had to set aside work for the day and do something to make up for his forgetfulness. He was sure that she was feeling very hurt, and Manik felt ashamed of himself.

He got to make it up to her. he just had to.

On the other hand Nandini drove over to Navya's house. Walking into the house she was surprised to see Alya and Mukti looking at some wedding magazines. Mukti was the first one to spot her and said, "ahh someone is looking pretty on their special day. But darling what are you doing here. Shouldn't you be with Manik or something, after all its your tenth anniversary."

Nandini looked at Mukti and burst out crying. Navya ran up to her and said, " what happened? Don't cry. Here sit and tell us."

Nandini looked at the girls and in between lots of hiccups she said, " he he.. that Monster Manik forgot what today is. I woke up early to make all his favorite breakfast dishes and he forgets. I hate him. I don't want to see him today. I hate him."

Harry hearing the commotion came out and seeing Nandini cry asked, "what happened? What did he do this time"

Over the years Harry had grown very close to Nandini. She was the sister he never had. He loved her to death and hated to see her cry. " I am going to kill Manik," he thought to himself. Walking over to Nandini he placed his hand on her shoulder and said softly, " Nandu..."

Looking up with tears running down her face Nandini turned to Harry and said, " he forgot."

Closing his eyes Harry took deep breaths to control his sudden urge to walk over to Manik's house and beat him up. Squeezing her shoulder he walked back to the kitchen and took out his phone and texted Dhruv, Cabir, Harshad and Raghav - Manik forgot what today is. Nandini upset. My house.

He sent another text, this time to Manik - Dude how could you?

Within seconds he had replies from all of them. Dhruv, Cabir and Raghav had similar reaction - Oh shit, On my way. Manik's text read - I know. I know but I will make it up to her promise. Just keep her at your place till 7 tonight and leave the rest to me.

Closing his eyes he silently prayed that Manik better keeps his promise because if not then Manik is going to be one sorry dude. Because he would not be the only one trying to kill Manik but will be happily joined by others.

Part 3:

At night when Nandini got back she was still angry at Manik. She knew her husband well. As much as she wished that he was joking about not remembering for the sake of surprising her later, she knew that he forgot about their anniversary, plain and simple. She did not feel like seeing Manik for the remainder of the night. She also did not feel like giving Manik the ring she bought for their anniversary. It was no ordinary ring. The platinum - gold ring belonged to his father. She had never known its existence until Manik showed her the picture of his dad wearing it a couple of years ago. Unbeknownst to Manik, Nandini decided to hire detectives to help her search through old boxes, papers, records and documents for any clues as to where the ring ight be now. And after two years of searching, the ring was tracked down in a jewelry shop in Delhi. Nandini had to buy the ring and it had cost her a fortune. Thank goodness both she and Manik were earning a lot of money.

No, despite the years of effort and money spent on searching the ring, she would not give it to him today. Maybe next wedding anniversary. That was, if he would be able to remember.

As she walked down the main hallway of the mansion, her phone beeped and she checked her inbox and there was a message from her princess - Happy anniversary mama and papa. I hope you are having loads and loads of fun. I wish you all the happiness in the world and don't celebrate too much I want to celebrate too with you guys tomorrow. Dadi sends her wishes too and has a present for you in her room. Love you both.

Nandini smiled a little despite the anger and frustration she had over Manik. She knew that her mother-in-law, Nyoika, has not completely accepted her yet, but as time went by, she has manifested subtle gestures indicating her gradual acceptance of her. It was very thoughtful of Nyoika to take Mandu on this vacation to give her and Manik some privacy. Nandini felt a bit touched that at least her mother-in-law remembered.

Too bad her husband didn't.

She finally reached their bedroom, and she slowly opened the door. She peeked inside. No, Manik was not there. Probably he was in the library, or at work. She didn't care. At least she did not have to see his face while she was still angry.

She went inside the room, and her attention was caught by a big box on the bed. Out of curiosity, Nandini lifted the lid of the box and lo and behold...

A beautiful sari lay inside. It was midnight blue, made of chiffon with a halter blouse full of sequence. There were small beads and crystals all over her sari. She was also delighted to see a pair of matching strappy sandals, a little evening purse and a diamond jewelry set.

Then she noticed a piece of paper inside the box and it read:

My darling Nandu,

Are you surprised? These are all for you to keep.

Wear the sari, the jewelry and the shoes. Don't forget to use the purse. After you've changed and gotten ready, open the purse and take out the one thing inside it. Do not take out the thing inside if you're still not absolutely dressed and ready. That's another surprise, and I am sure you don't want to ruin the surprise for yourself.

I love you.

Monster Manik

P.S. I did not forget.

Nandini felt like crying with happiness. He did not forget! All at one, her anger disappeared, and she felt very excited about the surprise for her and her gift to him. She quickly jumped into the shower and carefully changed into the blue sari. As she looked in the mirror, she felt satisfied that her figure was still good, especially for a 30 year old woman.

Using the little makeup she had she was ready in a matter of minutes. Her hair was left loose as Manik loved her long straight hair. With minimal make-up which highlighted her simple and natural beauty she looked at the jewelry and sighed. This was the most beautiful necklace she had ever seen.

When she was ready, Nandini surveyed herself in the mirror. Despite being rich, Nandini never really dressed up that much. She felt a sort of girlish glee as she saw herself in the mirror.

"Hmm.. not bad for a woman my age," Nandini murmured.

Blushing a little she opened her closet and there it was the little black box. Nandini took the black box and carefully cradled it in her hand.

Oh, she was excited to give the ring to Manik.

She was ready to go. But to go where, she realized she did not know. Then she remembered Manik's instructions. She reached for the purse and opened it. Inside was one thing - a white silk handkerchief. She unfolded it and stared at it. Nothing. She was starting to wonder just what kind of surprise this was when she saw the little message at he bottom - follow the bed of roses.

" Roses. What roses? and where?" Nandini thought to herself.

Turning around she stepped outside the bedroom and there they were red rose petals making a pathway for her to follow.

"Has this always been here. I just came this way or was I too mad at Manik to notice this?" Nandini thought to herself.

She was excited and nervous all at once and started following the beautiful path of roses which brought her by the patio doors. She opened the doors and stepped inside a beautifully decorated garden.

"OMG this is our garden, has it always been this beautiful?" she thought. She looked around and there were rose petals and candles everywhere. There was a beautiful table set for two right in the center of the garden draped in red silk cloth with a champagne bottle in an ice bucket. Did he read her diary because this set up was on her fantasy lists.

But...Where was Manik?

Her question was answered almost instantaneously. Manik appeared from behind her and despite her confusion she felt her heart beat a little faster at the sight of Manik wearing a black suit. The Chinese-collared shirt he had under his jacket was very appealing on him. Once again she realized that her husband was a very handsome man.

"Well Nandu, how do you like all this?" he asked huskily with a sweep of his hand. Then he paused to look her over with a smoldering gaze. "Do you know that my wide is a very beautiful woman?"

Nandini, too amazed to say anything, answered with another questions, "You did all of this?"

"Of course, its for our own party here if you want to..." He murmured in her ear while trailing a finger up her arm slowly and tantalizingly.

Nandini's eyes widened. " Manik..."

"Nothing but the best for you, " he answered, planting butterfly kisses on her cheek at the same time.

Nandini giggled like a school girl. "How did you know that this was what I have wanted for so long?"

"I just have a way of knowing. You've been my wife for so long. I know you well, " he murmured again as he nibbled on her ear.

Nandini turned her head to face Manik and kissed him lightly on the lips. " Well I'm glad. Thank you, " she said huskily. She kissed him again, this time with passion.

After a few breathless moments, she pulled away.

"I thought you forgot. I was angry, " she said.

"You thought I forgo? I planned all this from the start, " he said smugly.

Nandini sighed contentedly and leaned on Manik's strong chest. "I am so glad you remembered, " she whispered.

" How can I forget?" he said. Then Nandini held out his hand in front of her. In his hand was a red rose.

"For you Nandini."

" You have given me more than was necessary, " she sighed happily. Then she gently took the rose in her hand. " I'm just so glad you didn't forget, " she murmured.

"I would never forget today, Nandini. Happy Birthday. "
