'MY PARENTS HELPED ME REALISE MY POTENTIAL'

Actor Iqbal Khan says that though he was considered the black sheep of the family, his parents believed in his abilities

Istudied in Kashmir till standard six, after which I was sent to a boarding school. I was a mischievous child and would always get into trouble. But being the youngest in the family, I was pampered by my parents and siblings. My school days in Kashmir were a lot of fun. We led a very simple life. My parents always instilled good values in us. They made us understand that material things are not of supreme importance. I admire them for the way they've bought us up.
When I left Kashmir for boarding school, I was a bit upset. But, today I have to thank my parents for that decision. The time I spent in the boarding school made me independent. I learnt to live on my own and think for myself.
As a child, I was very attached to my mother, who loved to pamper me. I was a fat child and would love to gorge on home-made food and sweets. While my mom thought I was only healthy, my father made me realise the importance of staying fit and healthy and at times, would make me eat boiled food. Though he was a disciplinarian, he never put any pressure on me. I was given absolute freedom when it came to choosing my career. Otherwise too, my parents always gave me the freedom I've wanted. If I have ever made a mistake, they have always been there to help or advise me. My parents taught me to work hard and that there are no shortcuts to success. They have always been proud of my achievements. Though I was the black sheep in the family, they helped me realise my potential.
