Hi guys,
Having returned home from a round the world and seeing 3 months of episodes recorded by my mum I came to the following conclusions....
KYPH was billed as, the classic love story of two unique individuals, Angad & Kripa - as different as chalk and cheese, yet destined to fall in love. Initially, this concept worked but as of late has lost its fizz for the following reasons
1) The Characters
Initially Kripa was shown as a sweet, naive teenager from the backwaters of Nainital with dreams and aspirations of making it big in the music world in Mumbai and to meet her heartthrob and the idol of millions Angad, whom she worshipped.... with a simple hairstyle and wardrobe to boot. She being the dreamer believed in true love and commitment, flowers and the moon… the stuff of books and films
Angad was the mirror image of Kripa, his nemesis when they first met. He was the quintessential rock star, a big physique, rugged looks, lots of bling, fast cars, alcohol, the women, broken relationships and a personality to match, who lived life to the full and for today, never a thought for tomorrow or others, a credo he learnt from his ambitious and overbearing mother, Naina who in her blind quest to see her son at the pinnacle of superstardom had sacrificed her maternal instincts. Angad thought love a commodity, which he could buy like everything else in his life.
When the rock met the flower, sparks flew, the boxing gloves came off and began the numerous bouts of fighting, which bypasses would have got hurt in had they got involved (just ask Prithvi and Mishty!). After the tears, traumas and tribulations Angad and Kripa confessed that they loved each other… something that dadi and we the viewers already knew. After this, arrived the good old mango days with us seeing a softer side to Angad and Kripa. We discovered Angad was a good ole boy lost in the maze of life who needed a princess to pull him out aka Kripa. Then came the Tsunami and with it took the very things we had loved about Kripa and Angad ….!!!
Kripa lost her innocence and anonymity. Agreed, that his had to happen due to what Angad put her through (impending marriage to mishti and the miscarriage)and the fame she received thereafter. But where was the self reliant and fiercely independent Kripa, who came to big bad Mumbai on her own? We see Kripa as a mere shadow of her former self, always listening to others and hanging onto Prithvi's coattails for support. Like her personality, her make–up and wardrobe have taken a turn for the worse. The soft shades of make up, simple salwar kameez and long flowing locks have been replaced by loud garish eye shadows and lipsticks with over the top outfits.
Angad, though physically very much the same has lost the intensity and passion he initially had, the reason I and others loved him so much. He is too feminine and soppy, ready to drop a tear every time Kripa, his ladylove gets a scratch or has a hairpin out of place. I want the return of the brooding, angry young rock star with ambition and hunger, the character that first got me hooked to this serial.
I hope the one year leap takes us back to the characters we so loved…
