Generation leaps on television leave the audience boggled...scarcely able to understand the relationships and discern the mother and the daughter. It has become the hallmark of television that when serials wane in their overall rating then a generation leap followed by the entry of fresh faces becomes the order of the day. The story takes a major time leap, when one generation gives way to another, leading to different circumstances creating new plots and conspiracies. The writer and directors strive to retain the gripping sense of excitement and the mounting tension day-by-day conforming to the unwritten norms of a mega serial.

What is extremely bizarre is that while attention is paid to the minutest details of the story the crucial element of the impact of the visual image is lost. Often it is safely ignored resulting in ridiculous images wherein the mother looks hardly as old as the son, if not even younger! In an age of advanced technology and the logistics of make-up style progressing daily, the degree of perfection is bound to soar high.

Ekta Kapoor triggered the trend of generation leaps with the serials Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, Kasautii Zindagii Kay, Kesar, etc. Kumkum, and Bhabhi also followed the trend. Generations have come one after the other and new sets are put up flaunting a new lifestyle. The passing of time is signalled by the presence of some obvious grey hair for the actors and actresses, whether they carry credibility or not is hardly a debatable issue. In Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi Tulsi's children Karan, Ansh and Gautam appear to equal their mother in age and at times in look as well. While characters that actors portray rule the households the age factor and the appearances do not matter. While Mr. Bajaj of Kasautii Zindagii Kay lends credibility to his image one can barely visualize Sumit in Kumkum as the father of three mature children as he does not look half the age he portrays, credit due to the latest hair dye practices. Story moves on, the characters move on but when another quickly follows one leap it does not appeal to our interest. It is no child's game but extremely challenging enough to maintain the TRP rates successively for years.

Generation leaps are welcome signs of relief so long as the stories deem them necessary. Television industry thrives on this brisk business, so also people who are vying for a chance to enter the glitzy show world. It is the new age director who decides whether Baa of Kyunki lives on for another two hundred years, an absolute miracle with the patent right for Indian Television alone.

But do you think the same too??? Don't you feel now this is turning into more boring and dragging than actually making the story really interesting. At times it also seem to be more ridiculous.

My own take : Sense and sensibility do not go hand in hand, when mind rules over matter and the audience is taken for a ride. But thats wrong in my opinion! It's unethical! But then who to blame. Just the production houses??? Don't you think even the viewers are to be blamed???

That a very well analyzed and well written post.

What confuses me, is the sub plots of the subplot of the subplot when all the plots gets lost in the process. The stories get confusing, and even the script writer loses track of what the main plot was. Why cant there be a single plot and story unfolding on it.Why bring in such bizzaire sub stories and like you said when nothing else works give it a leap and it rolls out again. Atleast make up wise they should ensure that the mom looks older than her daughter.

I wish out Indian serials has a clearer story line.

Nice topic.

Well, I agree its pretty bizarre when the mother looks younger than the child and especially how old they can be. For instance as you said ba is over 200. Mr bajaj also should be in his 80's since he was probably arounfd 40 when he met prena and then came the 5-8 year leap, where he was prob around 45, and then the 20 year leap making him 65 and now another leap is to come which will make him 85ish.

But I kind of enjoy leaps. For instance, when the leap occurred in kasauti zindigi ki, I kind of enjoyed it. The character of Prem was naughty. I enjoyed the story then. But after they killed of mukti, the story got boring; therefore they are having another leap.

In kyunki, I enjoyed the leap because of the new characters introduced, Laksh! And I enjoyed KT and Lakshs story as well, right now to me it is kind of boring :( . it might have been better with the old story and without the leap.

In Kahaani Ghar Ghar ki I like it after the recent leap. This story seems nice, because here Parvati is doing something. Although some of the new comers overreact or cant act (my opinion, please don't get angry, this is for methili).

In Kumkum, I kind of liked it before the leap. They added Antara who was pointless.

Very well written! 👏

"Generation leaps on television leave the audience boggled" this is a very true statement at least for me. In my days of catching glimpses of daily soaps which my mom used to watch, I used to be left mesmerized with the Mother/Son, Father - Daughter characters and thier portrayals.(to be very frank at one time K-serials for me once upon a time be like comedy serials 😆) . Upon asking folks at home - How come this guy on TV is son of the lady showed when the guy obviously looked older then the lady? I used to get a grin and again everyone is busy watching 😕 😆

We can name it Generation leaps, killing a character / making him alive etc etc.. whole television industry start it from reality tvs, soaps, game shows are taking, audiences who seek some form of entertainment, for a ROYAL ride. Why still channels are successful and continuing? IMO they are smart, they precisely cater their audiences, right from small kid in the household to grand moms and surviving very well. Its not fair or unethical but final goal of earning money is achieved at whatever cost

the fact that some actors in these serials are up and leaving the show or displeased because of the prospect of impending 20 year leaps is self explananatory that leaps are a turn-off...unconvincing,

shruti (tina) in kggk plays a mother to a son that looks old enough to play her brother or luv-interest..i just wish more effort was out into storylines as much as they do in investing is sets, make-up n make-overs...n i wish more actors were a lil braver to say no to uneccessary leaps.

the only leap i enjoyed was the 1st ever leap in Kyunki..it was a new thing n the storylines/sub-plots were good.😛

Are they really boggled????
As far as i know ...audience are enjoying it .thats why they are high in popularity chart .

Only one to be blamed are Viewers. Ther are so many who like the generation leap for some or the other reasons ... and thats what these production houses wants . They strike .where it is required .
My POV is that ... If these channels and production houses give little respect to viewers ..they can start a new serial with some freshness ..but instead they keep on continuing with the same serial b coz they dont want to take risk . After all they are doing buisness and no body wants to take risk .When viewers are giving them everything from the same stale plot ...why go for risk???

well i agree its ur opinion, but i think script writers dont loose track of their main plot.....(....there could have been incidents where main charecters dont click and writers try to get in some other shoes). i watch some ekta shows and i should agree tht she (her team) tires to give justice to the title of the show and also the main track of it...but it couldnt be like always only the leads story have to be shown....their life is encountered by other people.
but i agree tht creativity is lacking these days..
adi yaar lets face it, (thought i agree with u in this point) if the lead- after gneneration leap has to go thorugh make over..do u watch the soap.😊😆

p.s havnt read the essay😆 Bhaskra bro had it there..will read and comment later😃

In most of the serials including your K-series show's , the heroine gets married at the drop of a hat, people land up in jail once every few days, dead men resurface back and the story goes on and on.

My mother used to watch a show called Piya ka ghar, (i think that was the name). In there aparently the main lead the girl she got linked to a class mate of her due to which she had a major fall out with her husband in the serial. This friend had a 8-9 year old girl aparently. then he left the track...and years later after the leap, the little girl of the heroine's friend resurfaced and she got married to the heroine's nephew it seems who was not even born when the girl was shown before. so here the girl was minimum 8-10 years older than the nephew, but in the serial when the nephew got married to the girl, the girl looked younger it seems.Thats when my mother lost it..she was furious and quit watching it. On one day in the show aparently someone is deadly ill having less than a few months of life to live and all of a sudden they are completely cured. how , what where , which , no one knows.

Even in your Ekta Kapoor shows, i dont think the main track of the story is kept alive.Atleast in KTH it did not happen.

You see, to make a soap attractive you dont have to introduce characters everyday. Serials like "friends" "two and half men" "everybody loves raymond" ran for so many seasons, and the story line was just around a few handful of people and about their lives.

The main problem is we viewer's watch whatever is dished out.
