Chapter 57

Maithili sat at the hotel bar and ordered a juice while waiting patiently for Adi, but he seemed to have been taking a lot longer than a minute as he proposed.

She got up and headed to the elevator when she saw adi come out.

She looked at him and smiled "how long did you take! Its been 10minutes already!" adi opened his mouth to say something but Maithili cut him through

"Ab chalo! You don't need to explain, it was probably an important office call or something"

Adi nodded yet looked a little apprehensive

Her once radiant smile faltered a little when she noticed his expression

"adi, kya hua? Is everything allright?" she asked, tension in her voice

"fine!" he answered immediately and went towards the hall. Maithili looked curiously at him but followed him brushing all thoughts aside.

She sat next to him in the bar and watched him closely.

This was so unlike him, she noticed as he twiddled his thumbs and sat pensively. This wasn't the adi she knew…the one she knew would have dragged her to the dance floor by now and both of them would have been dancing. She couldn't understand why he seemed so upset.

"Adi…" she put her hand on his and pressed it gently

"I won't ask what's wrong…but I just want to tell you that whatever the problem is, whatever difficulty you are going through…I'm with you"

He looked at her and smiled. Taking her hand in his, he kissed it. He realised his behaviour was making her suspicious and so he got up and pulled her into his arms.

"May I have a dance with you darling?"

She smiled "hmm…let me think…" she smile broke into a smirk and the both of them went to the dance floor.

A soft tune begins to play in the background as both of them dace in each others arms.

He stared into her eyes and wished she would walk with him hand in hand for the rest of his life…their lives

He wished he could hold her in his arms forever and ever…and that she would never leave him

She never thought their lives would be so perfect the way it was…and just prayed to God that she'd be in his arms like a part of him all her life.

The song continued in soft beat and throughtout the song he felt as if all his troubles had washed away…he wished he could live like this, in a dream world that both maithili adn himself had created, with nothing to worry about…but reality was something else.

His phone rang abruptly and he disengaged himself from his dream…worry spread on his face again but he hid it from Maithili.

"uh Maithili, pranay ka phone hai, I'm joining office from Monday na, so he's called to brief me about a new project…I'll be back in a minute ok"

Maihtili smiled and nodded. She sighed to herself and smiled dreamily…life couldn't have been any better.

Adi ran upstairs to his room and opened the door. "You can't just come in here and rummage through my stuff like this!" he shouted pulling a girl by her arm.

"I need the money now!" she yelled back

"Lower your voice! Or else someone will hear!" adi spoke in a low but firm tone

"why don't you be more specific…Maithili will hear"

"shut up garima!" his voice rose as he got angered.

"kya hua adi…you're angry are you?" she laughed string at him

"This was how I felt when I found out…found out I was pregnant, and that this child" she spoke pointing to her stomach "that this child is yours…but you were already a married man adi! Married and enjoying your life!"

G: I told my parents and they disowned me! She spoke laughing but there you were, in your house with your wife she spoke with disgust

A: hold your tongue! If you say anything about Maithili, I swear…

G: what will you do huh? What?? You've done everything bad that could have been done to me! now what else is left?

A: oh please! It wasn't entirely my fault…I was the one who was drunk…couldn't you have made a sensible decision??

G: i…

A: you…go on…you couldn't control yourself?? Is that what you wanted to say?

She stared at him in disgust: yes…because I happened to love you at that time…and now I'm paying a price for it!

G: you are… she pointed her finger at him but before she could speak further, adi interrupted her and handed her a bag

A: take the money and get out of here! I don't want anybody to see you get that!

She took the money still glaring at him

Before she left, she turned around and spoke: I'm glad my baby will never know you are his father…its better to tell my child that his father is dead than to tell it that you are his father

Adi glared at her as she walked away and slammed the door shut after she had gone.

Sitting on the bed, he buried his head in his hands and sighed. He only hoped that this would all end soon…whatever money he gave to garima was to support her child…and his…he felt mad at himself for ever thinking that. He felt as if he had cheated Maithili and he hated himself for that…he couldn't bare to think like that. He felt a hand on his shoulder and immediately jerked his head up. Closing his eyes he calmed himself down

A: maihtili…i…I'm sorry for leaving you there, woh bharat just put the phone down a minute ago and I was just tired…

M: bharat?? You said it was pranay's phone

Adi looked dumbfounded, he began to panic: I…pranay put down the phone five minutes ago, then bharat called and I spoke to both of them…

M: its ok…you don't need to explain

Adi sighed and returned to his position. He tried to control the throbbing pain in his head but it just wouldn't stop.

Maithili slowly touched his head, her fingers caressed his hair gently and softly. He slowly looked up at her and she smiled. Cuping his face in her hands, she kissed his forehead…

"I don't know what's troubling you but…" "Maithli…" he cut through "its nothing…" he smiled at her. She wasn't sure if he really meant it but she smiled back anyway.

"I just have a headache…that's it" adi spoke tilting his head back to ease the pain.

He pulled the pillow a little closer and laid on the bed closing his eyes. Maithili smiled at him and switched off the light. He seemed asleep, but sleep itself was far off from her. She got up and leaned towards adi…slowly she caressed the strands of hair falling on his forehead and placed a gently kiss on it. She smiled and laid back on the bed. She didn't know what was troubling him but just wished that she could be a part of it…she wished she could comfort him and help him through whatever problem he was facing.

She knew adi wouldn't tell her anything that would upset her, so she had to find out herself…and she would. With that thought in mind she turned round, only to see adi awake and turned towards her. He was looking at her lovingly until he realised she had caught him awake.

He smiled halfheartedly and held her hand…

A: promise me you won't ever leave me…ever…

M: adi, I promise you I'll never leave you…you mean more to me than anything else in my life.

He pulled her closer and wrapped her in his arms. Her head rested on his chest and she hugged him back.

Slowly, he felt his troubles slip away as he held on to Maithili tighter…

He was never going to let her go…and if she ever left him, he'd bring her back. He was certain that she would find out one day or the other and when she would, all hell would break loose but no matter how much she would claim to hate him, deep down she would continue to love him and for that love, he would bring her back, even if he had to plead with her, fall on his knees, but she would be with him for eternity and that was a certainty.
