Part 11

Thin strands of light expanded generously across the still room, casting morning shadows of indefinite shapes across the floor. A deceiving silence reeked in the air, while the rays of light penetrated into the chilly interior.

She turned her head towards the ceiling and slowly opened her eyes. Her instincts were fully alert, and she felt rested yet distinguishably exhausted. For a while, she just continued to stare at the roof… her thoughts void of expression as her face. As an unexpected whiff of air came scattering a wave of hair across her face, she remained still yet. Exhaling visibly, she removed the cover from her and sat up at the edge of bed… ready to face the day… or so was the intention. Looking up, her eyes fell upon the vast mass of blue on the other side of the large window. Getting up, she pulled her hair behind her ears, while wrapping the satin robe around her tightly… All the while taking leisure steps towards the sky encased in the glass afore. As she now stood before it, her eyes scanned the quiet features of a morning in the calm neighbourhood. Today was the day… after so many days. She watched disinterestedly as a sparrow tiptoed towards its indistinguishable prey, while another stood watching from a little distance. Suddenly the one going for its prey pulled back, as the other squawked… together they disappeared into the mass of blue… just before a car went whizzing past… It was a special day… a day to remember… yet she felt herself strained to think of it. Her thoughts tempted the past… But this was it… it was decided. Today she were to be wed… to the man whom she once "loved"… What is love, she thought unexpectedly. She loved Pranay right? Did she… Then… Exhaling deeply, her eyes left the indifferent view as she stepped into the bathroom. Somewhere in the distance, one could catch on the beeping of horns of urban Mumbai…

***

She sat strictly with her legs pulled up to her chest protectively. Silently, she rocked back and forth, awaiting her destiny. The day had faded unknowingly into dark, as she dared not look upon the clock. Time awaited none… The thought filtered into her mindless thoughts. It had been over a week since she had last seen him. Since, she couldn't get his picture out of her head. He had been there before, but then she had somehow managed to mingle in the moment, but that seemed a impossible task now. She could hear voices outside the door and slowly uncurled herself and plastered a small smile on her lips just before a burst of loud women entered into the room…

***

She stared dully at the traditional attire awaiting her attention. Penetrating the fabric, she found the colour akin to the darkest of red… A thick, elaborate band of shimmering gold ran at the outskirts of the entire outfit. While an intricate work of embroidery and beads were worked along the borders and lightly on the inside… It was indeed, a stunning piece of artwork. Kehte hain laal rang pyar ka prateek hota hai… uspe tohra champagne daal do, toh rang mein jaan mil jaaye… It was red indeed, with an alluring touch of champagne, bringing it life… aur Maithali wohi pehnegi joh uske duhley ko pasand ho… Taking hold of one end, she held the creative piece in her hand… observing it, marvelling it… With Praney's words and his face in mind, she smiled unintentionally… Suddenly, the she let go of the fabric, broken of her thoughts. Coming to reality, she once more took the outfit in hand… and went into the bathroom.

***

As she stepped out of the bathroom, her ears faintly caught the soft melody erupting from the nearby speakers…

In dino… dil mera… mujhse hai… keh raha…

Tu… kwaab sajah… tu… jee le zara…

Fading the tune in the back, she stepped afore the mirror, slowly seating herself. Her heart seemed to be pounding; yet she could sense no reason to it… Looking up, she stared into her celebrative presence. The outfit was perfect, an exact match for her figurine… as though made for her. Out of curiosity, she wondered who had chosen it… Her own time had passed in indifferently accepting whatever came her way, and none of the wedding preparations had consumed much of her attention. Passing the unimportant detail aside, she once more examined herself. Her hair was pulled up elegantly into an oriental bun… clasped together with a beautiful jewel gifted to her by Parvati Mamma. It boasted of rare stones of deep a profound red tone with a golden texture giving it a complete look. Her top came properly to her waist, while the bottom hugged her from the upper part of her lower half, while flowing nicely as the eyes trailed down… Her pallu draped elegantly from her waist, behind her… and down her right shoulder, while the cherished wedding veil sat untouched on the bed. Extending her hand, she paused before hesitantly grazing her hands over the precious jewels lying invaluably over the table. Her long fingers trembled lightly as they brushed against the cool metal. Moving her hand from one end to the next, she brought it back mid-way and pushed back an invincible strand of hair behind her ear.

Just then, she lifted her eyes towards the glass to acknowledge the click of the door. Her mouth opened to say something as she watched him lock the door and turned to look at her still seated figure. The words having lost her, along with the immediate blankness of her mind, she sat immobile… her head turned to look at him directly now. He returned her astonished demeanour with a handsome smile. The tone of his expressions was calm… pure… For a moment, she wondered… envied… at his ability… to mask himself… Turning her head back towards the reflection, she tilted her head slightly down… uncertain of her composure in his demanding presence. As she heard his footsteps near, she felt the pain kept within now swell up once more… Closing her eyes… she unknowingly gripped the stool so… that her knuckles paled… screaming in ache… a hurt she felt indifferent too.

A single tear slid unknowingly down her face… landing with an inaudible thud… Opening her eyes, she looked upon the result of her misery lying preciously upon his open palm. Soft creases of surprise formed on her face as she lifted her gaze to meet his intensive eyes. For a moment, they sat still… engraving the moment in their souls… equally aware of the need of time. She watched helplessly as he brought the palm to his lips… relishing her sadness… making it his own. Turning his attention to the reservoir of jewels lying invitingly upon the table, he turned back to her. The authenticity of his smile touched her soul… and she momentarily smiled inwardly as well… Her eyes traced his each movement as he selected each piece, delicately handling it with his experienced fingers… adorning her with the ornaments with precise care… As his fingers brushed against her ear, she felt the goosebumps sizzle across her skin… the first time… The estactic rush claiming strength to overpower her restraint… "Jao Maithali…" she opened her tightly shut eyes as his raspy voice breathed into her ears… She watched intently as he turned now to her other ear, carefully placing the rare piece into it's place… "Praney tumhaare khayal bun raha hoga…Usse kya pata… tum toh meri soch ban chuki ho…" (Praney must be cajoling thoughts of you… Little does he know… you have become my thoughts…). She looked up at him through the glass… startled at his conduct… each word weighing in the air like a never waning fog. Her eyes glued to him as he came to her side… kneeling afore… His tender fingers sliding across her petite wrist… each stroke sending reverberating currents through her… As he continued the rhythmic movement from one hand to the next his eyes fixed onto the task… "Wohe tumhaare kwaab dekh raha hoga…" (He must be weaving dreams of you…) He turned now to look at her with the handsome smile confidently placed on his lips… Momentarily, he turned his attention back to the bangled wrist, as though judging it and when satisfied he gazed at her… his eyes at a high pitch… "Lekin tum toh meri… haqeeqat ho…" (But you are my… reality…). Bewildered and shaken, she found no way of reacting… He abruptly got up and walked towards the bed, his eyes dreamily grazing on the deep red veil… before he held in between his fingers. Coming to her front once more, he stared at her for an endless moment… Finally, he lifted the dupatta over her head… completing her frame.

An excruciatingly pleasant moment passed as he stared at her admiring… "Perfect" seemed and understatement he felt… to praise the image laying afore his blessed eyes. She had always had that strange affect on her… he seemed at loss for words to describe her… his feelings for her… His heart swelled with deeply felt affection… so much so, that his eyes filled with unexpected moistness. Turning his head, he swallowed his tears and looked at her still unmoving figure. Lifting a hesitant hand towards her face, he could feel his hand tremble as the stubborn tears fogged his eyes once more… Suddenly, he brought his hand back… Her neatly defined eyes followed his every move. He could read her pain and suddenly felt the urge to take her into his arms… hide her in his embrace… keep her for eternity… Instead, he let out an uncertain chuckle and looked down at the ground. After a pause, he looked at her again. "Maithali… jaanti ho, tumhaare aane se pehle… Vikram-Aditya Mehra sab taraf chayah tah… Aur aaj dekho… Wohe tum mein hi… kahin gum gaya…" (Maithali… you know, before you came into my life… Vikram-Aditya Mehra was everywhere… And look now… He has lost somewhere… amidst you…). She closed her eyes for a moment, as he cupped her face in his hands… tilting her head ever so slightly… while his lips left a lingering imprint upon her forehead.

She outstretched her arm towards his retreating back… unable to voice her heart's cry… Drowning her gaze to the floor, she buried her face in the poetically henna-drawn hands…

***

"Mallishka tum… meri baat toh sunno… lekin… Mallishka! Tum jaanti ho hum dono ne kitni mehnat ki hai iss pal ke liye… Ek wohe Maithali hai, chee… najaane teen mehno se kiska paap apne pet mein liye ghoomti rahi… aur uske bawajood main uss se shaadi karne ja raha hoon… Wohe bhi un paanch sau kadod ke liye joh Parvati Mamma ne uske naam kiye hain… Bas ek aakhri dauv hai Mallishka, please… have patie…" (Mallishka you… listen to me… but… Mallishka! You know that we have worked so hard for this moment… There's that Maithali, chee… who knows whose sin she carried in her womb for three months… and despite that, I am marrying her… And that too for the five million that Parvati Mamma put under her name… Just this last play Mallishka, please… have patie…). She felt the floor spin beneath her feet as a whirlwind of emotions burned within her… shocked… betrayed… the tears fiercely stung at her eyes, as her hands fisted into balls… She felt thunder stricken… With rage running through her veins, she stepped towards a stunned Praney… the gadget in his hands having long seen its demise whilst hitting the hard floor. Without a word, she ceased inches before him…. Piercing him with a bold glare… The sound of her palm against his cheek echoed off the empty walls as she looked at him, shocked… his right hand clinging to his burning cheek… With shame or what she could not fathom… his eyes fell to the floor… Turning her stride, she walked briskly towards the door… her feet ceasing mid-step. Her venomous voice filled the still air… "Adi sach kehta tah… tum sirf kwaab bun sakte ho… haqeeqat tumhaari paunch se pareh hai…" (Adi was right… you can only weave dreams… reality is too far fetched for you…). So saying, she turned on her feet and walked towards the door… stopping just before the crossing line… Looking up, she turned her misty eyes towards Parvati Agarwal who looked at her with immense affection. Parvati smiled lightly, bringing her lips to Maithali's forehead… Maithali smiled subtely between her choked state… Parvati nodded at her, as she rushed out… leaving Praney Kaul rotting under the presence of his deceived grandmother.

***

Enclosing her figure within the dark black of the shawl, she took casual strides knowing of her destination… Memories came flooding back as the sand teased her bare feet… Looking up at the sky, she hugged herself tighter… smiling deeply… As she approached him… she stood still for a minute… just observing him sitting calmly on the large rock… his dark eyes circling the seagulls squawking above… Shifting her gaze, she looked at the immeasurably deep waters crush against the sand… their connect mingled in the air in a melodic sound… calming the atmosphere… Quietly, she took her seat next to him… Her lips still garnished in the persistent smile… The eyes grazed the distant skies… He sat unmoving next to her… " Tum ho na…" (You are there right…) She looked at him perplexed for a moment… then taking his arm into her own, she leaned her head against it… "Tumse…" (Only with you…). She could feel the smile secretly dance upon his lips…

After uncounted minutes, his voice rose above the resounding waves… "Maithali…?"… So lost in her blissful demeanour, she could only mumble a "hmm…"… "Ghar chalein…" (Shall we go home…). After a moment of satifying silence, she turned to look at him in the eyes… "Hmmm…" she smiled clutching his arm tighter. Another moment passed as they both admired the scene afore… The sun was coming slowly to a rest for the day… as the sky turned into a cornucopia of sweet hues of red and orange… Getting up, he looked at her with a impish grin plastered on his face… She twisted her eyebrows in curiosity… as he lifted her onto his shoulder…as he carried her away… Her laughter ringing serenely in the air… singing the song of his life…

Kwaabon ki manzil toh shayad kisi ko hi naseeb ho…

Haqeeqat mein jisse mile jannat ka sajda… kya kaam uske kwaab wohe…

* Hey guys, that's it. I want to thank you all deeply for all your support and encouragement. You have been too kind to this rambler… thank you all so much. Hope to see you in my new post, "Marriage By Consent"… as it is, my head is gone… hence, I've started again! Cheers!!
