Hey all, sorry about the huge delay. Just finished all the exams... I'm not sure about this update. Like, I'm not quite sure if this is how I wanted to portray it... but its the way it came, and I don't have much time to think further, so I left it as is. Please do comment and let me know what you all think. I will have the next part probably tomorrow. Thanks once again.
Chapter 5B
"You want to dance?" Her thoughts… his presence… rendezvous. What did he just say…
She looked at him blankly… Dance… He was asking her to dance? It wasn't exactly shocking per se, but strangely… momentous. If this had occurred a few years back, indeed the sky would have come tumbling to the ground. Perhaps it was still, but in slow motion… Why should she dance with him? They were enemies afterall… weren't they?
He was standing now, towering above her still seated position. What else does this night have in store, she wondered silently. She looked again, past his demanding frame to the shadows meshed in colourful haze… the crowd.
"It's ok if you don't want to, I can understand…"
Immediately, she recognized the flicker within her. The voice was laced subtly… delicately with humour, but the arrogance attacked her nerves first. Indeed, some things never change, she thought disgusted. The hesitancy of the moment had curiously slipped away, and she narrowed her eyes at his, as though to confirm it. Putting her hand in his extended one, she followed him back into the shadows…
An unknown melody poured through unseen corners of the room as she stood swaying gently… awkwardly… She could feel his eyes burn into her existence, and for a few unexplained seconds, she avoided them. Since when did she have to hide from Vikram-Aditya Mehra. The strangeness was wrecking havoc within her… Staring straight-ahead, she felt the suede texture of his blazer with her eyes… while biting a feeling of wanting to bury herself in it. After a few precious minutes, she looked up coolly at his unabashed presence. Damn you Mehra, she thought as the outline of his lips expressed the ease, which she searched. Seeing his shameless persona, she found a current of ease surge deceivingly throughout her limbs…
It was happening… the melody was beginning to intoxicate her… But even so, she held an unintended restraint. It was shady… dim… the light falling strangely over his face… bathing him in mysteriousness… And then the crowd made its presence felt as she sensed herself being pushed against him. Discomfort swam over her like a pungent odour… The blend of musky zest emanating from him rushed towards her senses like a powerful wave. As the pace of the music slackened to softness, she hesitantly looked up and found his look undisturbed. A flame of sorts still burned somewhere within her, but it seemed overshadowed by the awkwardness of the situation… their position…
Mar jawan… mar jawan… tere ishq pe…
Mar jawan…mar jawan…
Beeghi bheegi sapno ka jaise... khat hai…
Haye… gili gili chahat ka jaise lat hai…
Mar jawan…
In the midst of the fog of confusion surrounding her, she felt her eyes again captivated by his… A tingle circulated throughout her nerves as his hands delicately fell upon her waist, while her own hesitated around his neck… They were dark, his eyes. Unusually dark… a world of their own… a world somehow luring her in… They seemed to speak to her own… an unknown language… as though attempting to communicate some secret to her… It was unnerving, but the magnetic force was too strong for her too contain… and for an undeniable moment, she felt possessed by their silent speech…
"Tumne jawab nahin diya… Bijli…" (You never answered me… Bijli)
The hourglass tipped over, as the remnants of an almost forgotten time scattered afore… Biji… she had wondered… always. For a moment, she looked on unresponsive, still mutely catching her breath, as though having neared some bottomless edge. Despite fixing her vision on his, it dawned on her for the first time that he had not removed his gaze from her either… The realization sent the colour racing in and out of her face, and she quickly averted her eyes to hide the embarrassment. As the dynamics of his question came into focus, the familiar flicker burned further inside and an irritated pout formed upon her lips.
He waited for her answer… As expected, there was none… but that fire in her eyes. And then his gaze fell stealthily to her pouted lips… A pause instilled… while a sudden urge raced through his veins… A wild desire to capture that pout… make it his own… Caught in an unexpected frenzy, he pulled her close… too close. Her raspy, surprised breath met his skin like a whiff of wind on a sandy shore… For a minute, he allowed himself to indulge in that familiar feeling… the sensation that had somewhere always been present between them. It was an unnamed feeling… alive and feral… Unsure of himself, he swerved his gaze back to the hazel reservoir peeking into him silently, questioningly… Her eyes communicated a fraction of the chaos compiling these few seconds of his existence… The innocence they held slowly melted the urge… sending it to retreat in a silent corner…
"Tumhaari aankhein…" (Your eyes…)
She waited with bated breath, not certain of what was going on… The crowd… the noise… the colour… it all had gradually fallen into the backdrop, far from her current reach. His grip loosened and eventually let her be. Confusion and awkwardness reigned for a terrifying moment… She hated being outside a state of self-control… and within a few precious seconds, she realized how she had stepped over the unwritten line… even if it were unintentional.
It took her a few complicated phases to notice that the music was still playing… and she was still encased in his grip. As the tune changed into something more speedy, the mood shifted, much to her thanks… and in between, she found odd bits of conversation seep through the awkwardness.
The rest of the night, she found herself shrouded in his strangely comforting presence… the awkwardness remained, but the unseen holes seemed to have filled with alarming ease. She never did get a chance to introduce him to Shalini, but the works of fate are unpredictable… as are the twists in the path one finds their feet treading on... Besides, nothing in her life had ever been planned…
(End Flashback)
Her heart thundered against the ribcage in panic… time seemed to have trickled to the last grain as those eyes peered into hers that last time… With a start, she awoke to utter darkness, shivering. As the anxiety reached its pinnacle, she struggled to put herself together. Unsettled, she looked out the large glass… thin drops of water scattered mercilessly against the window pane. A bundle of emotions bubbled within her all at once. Swallowing, she closed her eyes once more, realizing the quiet setting… her home… the floor… the wall… the guilt.
