love my curves…" says Rakshanda Khan

TV STAR TRAIL
"I love my curves…" says Rakshanda Khan
by Meenakshi Shankar
Jul 11, 2008, Bangalore

A four month sabbatical and just when you started wondering where she was hiding, Rakshanda is back with a bang, looking drop dead gorgeous, flaunting her sexy figure and screaming from the roof top, "No, I'm not the latest victim of the size zero fad!".

"Thank you, but no thank you. I love my curves. Infact, I think curves are the best thing that can happen to a woman…don't you agree!" she turns around and questions when we bumped into each other in a recent meet at Ekta Kapoor's Kabhi Kabhi Yaar, Kabhi Kabhi Pyaar, wherein, she is hosting the show with her rumored link up, Sachin Tyagi.

"How is it that you know more about my personal life than I do?" she laughs at my question. "The link ups will always be there. But, there's nothing brewing between Sachin and me." Coming back to her sabbatical, she said, "I just wanted a break from the TV industry. The same old roles don't appeal to me. Saas bahu is not my scene, and before you jump the gun and question me about Kyunki… which is a 'saas-bahu' serial, my role as Tanya Malhotra Virani was a powerful character. No simpering, no 'rhona-dhona', no glycerin eyes for me…"

"But, I had reached a point of saturation. It just didn't happen one fine morning. It was a build up and that's when I realized that I had enough and wanted some 'me' time. Just because you take a sabbatical, does not mean that you are a has-been. I'm in this industry to stay. I love the limelight and I love the entire package deal. Why would I want to give it all up? Unlike the newbies, I'm not desperate for work. And, I had also realized that I was neglecting myself. So the sabbatical was more along the lines of pampering myself and focusing on the 'me' quotient."

We couldn't help wonder, if it was the 'I-want-to-go-the-Bebo-way' which is a rage in our industry which prompted the hazel eyed girl to take a break or was it Ekta's diktats on whipping her star cast into shape which prompted the lissome lass into stepping on the treadmill?

She scoffs it all off saying, "No, Ekta didn't have anything to do with my weight loss. Come on, give her some credit. She is responsible for shaping careers, not figures! I'm in an industry, which, unfortunately is based on 'the look good' quotientSo, I stepped on the treadmill, did weight training and decided to munch on carrot sticks instead of reaching out to a bag of potato chips

It's not just working out, but adopting a healthy lifestyle. I didn't realize the power of a nutritionist, till I got myself one. And, the inches that I had gained over a period started melting away.

Kabhi Kabhi Yaar, Kabhi Kabhi Pyaar…why aren't you one of the participants?

"Because, I don't want to get sued", she says, with imp dancing in her eyes. I'm a terrible dancer and I would end up hurting my co-contestants so much so, that they would actually be tempted to sue me for my millions. Ekta did approach me, but I told her about my misgivings of wearing my dancing shoes. So hosting was an option which was offered and I readily took up. Most of the contestants are like family to me. And, the show is more like a 'family get-together'…we have a blast on the sets. And the rumors, well, they are mere rumors. Denying it is only going to spark it further, so for now, I'm going to resort to the famed 'No comments'.

Amba in Kahani Hamari Mahabharat Ki…

I wanted to experiment with mythology. And nothing can get bigger than Mahabharatha. And Ekta Kapoor's 'Kahani Hamari Mahabharat Ki' is the biggest that you can get. I'm not saying that because I'm a part of it and essaying the role of Amba. I've seen the behind-the-scenes work and it's none like we have ever seen before. History says that Mahabharat started because of two women, Draupadi and Amba. Amba wanted to marry Bhishma after King Shalva and King Vichitravirya rejected her proposal, but due to his oath to remain a bachelor throughout his life, he couldn't marry Amba. So she held him responsible for her plight and wished to take vengeance by killing him.

A strong character, which is keeping in line with my kitty of work. As for the homework bit, I've a walking dictionary on Mahabharata on the sets, Ronit Roy. He's read and reread and reread the Mahabharata so many times that he actually coaches all of us on the situations. So, if anybody has a thing or two to ask, then we all turn to Ronit for guidance. He plays the character of Bheesm, the centrifugal force of Mahabharata

And Kyunki…

That's not happening for now. But the creative whizzes have told me that they will bring the track back, but when is a million dollar question

So, when you see me there, you will know that I've arrived.

And the famed Bollywood dream…

It's not that there haven't been offers, but I think I'm too lazy to actually get up and prove myself in the Bollywood space. I like TV. I'm comfortable in this medium. There's a sense of contentment. So for now, it's going to be only TV.

It would be in public interest that I don't sing!'

Rakshanda Khan talks to Roshni K Olivera about reality shows, Sachin Tyagi, her co-host with whom she's been linked and why she isn't eyeing Bollywood

You are anchoring the Kabhi Kabhii Pyaar Kabhi Kabhii Yaar with Sachin Tyagi, who you've been linked with...
I've been linked with Irfan Pathan also and I've met him only twice. Atleast here I've known Sachin for 4 1/2 years, so what do I say?

Are you saying these are just baseless rumours?
Whenever I have anything about my personal life to say, I will say it. Till then what's the point harping on anything?

But wasn't it a planned strategy by the channel or production house to bring Sachin and you together?
As far as I remember Ekta (Kapoor) had met me a long time ago and she'd said she was planning a reality show. She told me whenever she has a reality show, she'll get me to host it. For me it's Ekta keeping her promise. I believe I get work on my capacity rather than my equation with someone.

How do you work things out on a show when there is another host along?
Anchoring a reality show is a challenge. Having a cohost who can sing and dance as well is an added advantage and that works for the show.

Is Sachin a better dancer than you?
For me anybody is a better dancer than me which is why I'm not a contestant, but the anchor.

Why haven't you participated in any reality show?
I just think I don't have the guts that it takes to be a contestant. And right now I don't even have the talent! Some day when I overcome my fear of dancing I might contest.

And singing?
Singing? It would be in public interest that I don't sing! My neighbours and audiences might actually go to court over this. Imagine if I'm rehearsing at home,
property prices will actually
fall in Lokhandwala!

Tell us about your role in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, you haven't been seen in the show for a while now...
It wasn't a planned thing. It so happened that the track was not really required at that point. Maybe they felt Hiten can't handle two hot women together!

Will you return to the show sometime soon?
As far as I have been told the track is most certainly going to come back. It's just a matter of time when.

In Ekta Kapoor's Mahabharat on 9X you are playing Amba. How's the experience?
It's fabulous you get to play a mythological character. And you are playing a character that has no physical reference. At the same time you are pitted against a show entrenched in public memory for 15 years. We have to move away from that and create our own impact, but keep the flavour intact.

Many of your TV colleagues have been eyeing Bollywood. What about you?
Many people are moving away from TV to films, so there have to be some actors loyal to TV. That's why I have decided to stay back
(smiles).

You've lost quite a lot of weight in recent times..
Yes, it's a conscious effort and thankfully I had the time. But most certainly I'm not looking at size zero. Being zero at anything in life doesn't interest me. roshni.olivera@timesgroup.com

'The boys are looking hot in Mahabharat'

Rakshanda Khan entered our homes and hearts with her spicy characters like Tanya in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Mallika in Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin.

Now, the actress will be seen in a different avatar in Ekta Kapoor's [Images] Kahaani Hamaaray Mahaabhaarat Ki.

She talks to Rajul Hegde about her character Amba in the mythological show.

What made you take up Mahabharat?

I got a chance to act in a mythological show, which doesn't come one's way often. I am doing a cameo for three episodes.

Ronit Roy: Nervous about playing Bhishma
I liked the character of Amba because it has tremendous potential. Mahabharat started because of two women, Draupadi and Amba.

Amba wanted to marry Bhishma after King Shalva and King Vichitravirya rejected her proposal, but due to his oath to remain a bachelor throughout his life, he couldn't marry Amba. So she held him responsible for her plight and wished to take vengeance by killing him.

Chetan Hansraj: It will be challenging to play Bheem
You have a glamorous image. Why take up a mythological show now?

As an actor, we should try different kinds of roles. Doing a mythological will add to my portfolio and help me mature as an actor.

Tell us about the costumes in the show.

Grand is the only word I can use to describe everything. Balaji Telefilms [Get Quote] has not shot any of its shows on such a grand scale on television before.

Jatin Shah: I took Sahadev's role to get a positive image
The boys are looking really hot and stunning in Manish Malhotra's desgined costumes. He has given the characters of Mahabharat a modern look, keeping traditions in mind. I have really not worked with many women on this show, but their costumes are also awesome.

Were you offered Amba, or did you choose to play her?

The creative team had thought of one or two other characters too but Ekta Kapoor felt this role suited me better. I liked the character of Amba because she is a strong woman. It's worth doing this role.

What kind of homework did you do for this character?

I have not read the Mahabharat. But as a kid, I religiously watched it on television. Ronit Roy [who plays Bhishma] is a walky talky Mahabharat. He is well versed with the all characters and the stories behind it. If I had any doubts, I would go to him and ask him to describe why I had to give a particular expression. He would always explain. Also, there were creative heads and directors around to help us if we had any queries.

How was your experience?
It has been wonderful. I have worked with Ronit in Kyunki but in his show, I got to see a different side of him. He is so dedicated that he goes home and rehearses his scene before he comes next day for the shoot. Yesterday, I got to see an extensive war scene between Ronit and the others, and the kind of effort they have put in is amazing.

You are also hosting a reality show Kabhi Kabhii Pyaar Kabhi Kabhii Yaar.

Yes, I am hosting a reality show for the first time. Here, the actor participants has to dance with his real and reel life partners. I am having a blast shooting for this. My track in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi ended three or four months ago, and I could not spend time with my friends.

Now, I am spending a lot of time with Hiten Tejwani and Gauri Pradhan [Images] [who are a part of Kabhi Kabhii Pyaar Kabhi Kabhii Yaar] and I am having fun. After Kyunki, I was just travelling to different countries, which I enjoyed too.

Will we see you in Kyunki again?

Not right now. But they told me that they will bring me back after some time. I have no clue when and how I will be shown again.

Diary: Ekta's reality show
The launch of Ekta's reality show Kabhi Kabhii Pyaar Kabhi Kabhii Yaar was supposed to be telly star studded affair. The entire event was stolen by Ekta Kapoor, Sameera Reddy and Hiten – Guari Tejwani. We bring you some gossip from the event.

Sameera Reddy, who was wearing Shantanu Nikhil's red hot dress, was the centre of attraction. Though Sameera was in hurry she made sure that she gave enough time to everyone and we spotted a fresh cut on her left leg. When a media person pointed towards it, she covered it with her hand while sitting on a sofa. We hope next time Sameera will take care of her leg and will not forget to cover it with a long dress instead of her hand.

Ekta managed to steal the show as always. This time she decided to give competition to the actress and wore a short one piece. Ganesh Hegde too was surprised. Madam also forgot to remove a tag on her bag, which was surely not going with her modern get up.

We all know Hiten Tejwani is the blue eyed boy of Ekta. When Ekta was called on stage she did not forget to meet her pal and ended giving him a nice kiss on his cheek. A great way of showing affection we must say Ekta.

Rakshanda Khan will be hosting the show with Sachin Tyagi. Her red bag and sandals were not going with her dress but she was looking sexy in her new hairstyle and has also shed a few kilos. However, when she was getting down from the stage, a journalist accidentally stamped her foot. The poor Rakshanda was wincing in pain.

Amit Sarin (Kshitij of Kkusum fame) is one of the contestants of show. Amit made his entry alone on stage even though his yaar Aashka was present outside the venue in a weird costume and was clicking pictures with him. Strangely, it was not announced that both Aashka and his wife were unwell and hence were not present.

Hiten Tejwani (TOI Photo) More Pics
After Gauri Pradhan's entry in Tony and Deeya Singh's show Left Right Left a month back, how could hubby dear Hiten Tejwani be left behind?

Well, the actor is playing a mysterious character in the serial who does "good things for bad reasons and bad things for good reason", according to Hiten. "I'm playing the role of Abhay Verma. It's a very interesting character. I can't reveal whether it's a positive or negative character, it's a surprise for the audience," he says, adding, "It's not a continuous role but with my entry there will be a twist in the story. So just keep watching," he says not wanting to divulge any details.

Known as a strong Ekta Kapoor loyalist, did he have to take permission from the soap queen to take up a show outside the K-camp? "I've always maintained that I'll take up whatever good roles come my way as long as they don't disturb my schedules with the shows of other production houses. Ekta has never stopped us from doing good work so long as it doesn't interfere with the dates given to her shows," says Hiten defensively.

And how does he manage working in all the three shows — Kyunki saas bhi kabhi bahu thi, Left Right Left and the reality show, Kabhi Kabhii Pyaar Kabhi Kabhii Yaar? Says Hiten, "That has not been a problem for me at all. My timings are taken care of by the production house as my two shows are with the same production house. I've planned my shoot for the other shows accordingly. So it's worked out proper that way," he explains. This definitely seems to be a package of three-in-one for Hiten and Gauri fans as they will now see the hot couple in not one but three shows!
