Kyunki's Ganga is back

Shilpa Saklani Agnihotri is excited about being seen in "Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhie Bahu Thi" again. "This show gave me the initial recognition that I desired for. It's great to be back as Ganga. Yes, the role will gain quite a bit of prominence now. There is a lot of scope for growth. Let things unfold and you will get to know". But Saahil her onscreen husband has let the good girl, Ganga down. Now will she still be with him or go for someone more deserving? "Ganga has always been true and just. Though Saahil is not with her now, he will get the right picture soon. Ganga deserves the best, there are lot of surprises in store, you will know", claims Shilpa.

Just as Shilpa essays the wronged Ganga in
reel life, in real life too she is fuming over the rumours of her husband Apurva Agnihotri's fling with Kaajjal co -star Surveen Chawla. "How can someone put into cold-print a set of lies and get away with it? As an actress, I know that we are so closely bound with the unit members who we interact with at least twelve hours a day that it's a very common thing to share lunch or go to each other's vanity vans to chat. Does that automatically translate into having a scene? After this incident, Apoorva has already gone off the press totally and poor Surveen was so shaken that she couldn't even talk to me properly on the phone when she called me, despite being such a good friend of mine", asserts Shilpa. Well, it is clear that just like Ganga, Shipla Saklani knows how to stand up for justice and defend her man.

Can there be smoke without fire?

Link-ups may be part and parcel of TV actors' lives but is there any truth to them? BT explores what lies beneath the rumours

GITA HARI

Of late, the television industry seems to have been ridden with liaisons, affairs and infidelity. Working in close proximity for 12 to 16 hours, 25 days a month provides enough attraction and opportunity to get closer with the co-star. It's alright if both the actors are single but what if either or both of them are already married? It can create discord or a split in their marital relationships. Is it worth staking your marriage and a faithful partner, for a few hours of closeness to your co-star, in the bargain?
The beautiful Shilpa Saklani and the reticent Apurva Agnihotri were in the news recently, with tales of Apurva having a relationship with Surveen Chawla, his co-star of Sony's Kaajjal, doing the rounds. Peeved at gossip mills working overtime, Shilpa lashes out, "It's a big joke, we (she and Apurva) have had a good laugh at the rumours. Our relationship is built
on trust. It's only natural
that when you work round the clock, you are stressed out. What's wrong if you mingle with your costars, have lunch with them. I do it too, but that doesn't mean anything." According to Shilpa people who have on-the-side affairs are psychotic to stake their marriage. But she feels bad for Surveen, who she says, "is single and her name being dragged into such things by irresponsible people can affect her image."
Rohit Roy has been portrayed as a flirt, so how does it affect his lovely actor wife Manasi Joshi Roy? Does she see him working with beautiful costars as a threat to her marriage? "That's the image built by the media about Rohit. In contrast, he is totally a family man, a responsible, loving and caring husband and father. These rumours don't affect me at all," says Manasi.
Married man with kids, Ravi Gosain, who is rumoured to be on a relationship with actor Priya Arya from the time they were working together on a film script, refutes and refuses to speak on the topic. According to him, "When you are constantly in each other's company, temptation arises and it can happen when you are new in this line. The serial Amanat was shot for six years, some actors fell in love with each other and even got married. But we, as mature actors have a professional approach."
The recently married Roshni Chopra says, "Attraction is bound to be there and I fell in love with my husband Siddharth when we were working together. But this can happen only to singles. Once married, you don't look at others from that angle. I get along well with Ram Kapoor and Naman Shaw. It's very necessary to like your co-stars because of the nature of your work but nothing beyond that." Since her husband too is associated with TV and films, would she be affected if rumours linked him with any actor? "No," affirms Roshni adding, "The foundation of our relationship is trust and I would never believe what is written in the papers." Teejay Sidhu and Manoj Bohra, Prem of Kasautii Zindagii Kay, know when you spend so much time together, temptation is bound to take place. But Teejay believes that Manoj is an exception, for she says, "I am not the possessive, jealous type at all. In this line there is a lot of gossip. I wouldn't even believe them or react harshly as I trust Manoj completely."

Sikcand shown the door?

A still from Bigg Boss, Kajjal

It wasn't too long ago when Sandiip Sikcand joined Sony Entertainment Television in the capacity of chief creative director with much fanfare and amidst many K-controversies (remember he had an ugly fallout with mentor Ekta Kapoor?), last August. With no visible boost in the channel's TRPs, thinking heads at the channel are considering showing a not-so-happening Sikcand the door. Sources inform that scuffles over poor TRPs and sinking prime time daily soaps have become a common occurence in the Sony office.

At a high-profile meeting early this week, Sikcand was asked to pull up his socks or else.... A well-placed source from the channel informs, "Yes it is true. There was a meeting between the authorities on Wednesday night and Sandiip was asked to resign. In fact, Sandiip did put in his papers yesterday. He will be serving his notice period for two months and April 30 will be his last day at work."

What prompted the channel authorities to do away with Sikcand? It started with TRPs dipping when the final drama was unfolding on Bigg Boss. In the last week, other programmes commanded better viewership (according to TAM figures). Kaun Banega Crorepati topped the list of favourites with a TRP of 5.3, followed by Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki with a TRP of 4.9, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi with 4.7 and the India-West Indies match with 4.1. As for the new lot of soaps including Kaajal, Kulvadhu, Jeete Hai Jiske Liye and Durgesh Nandini failing to garner considerable viewership. Not to mention, Sikcand also exercised his powers to change production houses (Shreya Creations replaced Prime Channel for Ek Ladki Anjaani Si) and even sacked a few actors including Kanchi Kaul.

When quizzed about his ouster Sikcand said, "I do not wish to comment on this issue at all." Even channel authorities are making efforts to keep the spat hush-hush. N P Singh, chief operating officer of Sony Entertainment Television says, "This is completely baseless and there is no truth in this."

Shilpa Agnihotri fumes

When a recent report in a popular tabloid hinted, in not too uncertain terms, about Apoorva Agnihotri having an affair with his Kaajjal co-star, the chirpy Surveen Chawla, his wife Shilpa Agnihotri couldn't keep her emotions under control any more. Tagged as the sati-savitri of the tele-industry for tagging along with her hubby at every event around town and praising him to the skies at the drop of a hat, Shilpa, an accomplished actress in her own right, took all these epithets with a smiling face despite having confessed in private to be quite hurt with the same. She vents her anguish saying, "Is it a crime to love your own husband?

Is it that sacrilegious to accompany him to social outings? It may probably be the time when it is becoming fashionable to come on someone else's arm but that's not me. If that is hurting some people, so be it" says Shilpa with anguish, who however had chosen not to give it much importance in print. "But I think, it is this very thing that probably has emboldened some people to write ridiculous things about us", fumes Shilpa who goes on to explain, "Apoorva has always been media-shy. He's not arrogant but he's not the kind to harp about himself in print. As for me, I like to talk to only those people I trust and am comfortable with and that too only when I have something consequential to talk about.

This attitude of ours rubbed off some people the wrong way, who, when they realised that we did not budge after small nudgings, decided to go over-the-top and announce that Apoorva is having an affair. I was shocked when I read that report; not because I doubted Apoorva. I would never do that. I trust him more than I trust myself but I was appalled by the degradation of reportage. How can someone put into cold-print a set of lies and get away with it? As an actress, I know that we are so closely bound with the unit members who we interact with at least twelve hours a day that it's a very common thing to share lunch or go to each other's vanity vans to chat and that is what happened between Apoorva and Surveen. Does that automatically
translate into that they are having a scene? It's so ridiculous and maligning.

After this incident, Apoorva has already gone off the press totally and poor Surveen was so shaken that she couldn't even talk to me properly on the phone when she called me, despite being such a good friend of mine. I severely condemn such reportage and would like to go on record as Apoorva's wife that I refuse to believe that they are going around. I know my hubby and my friend too well to believe this hog-wash!" stresses Shilpa, who after Fame X will now be seen again in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and is looking to take up yet another serial. "But I hope to get a comedy or something equally exciting. I am done with my share of saas-bahu sagas!" she asserts before signing off.

Surveen, the scorekeeper?

The production house of Kaajjal is fed up with lead actress Surveen Chawla refusing to give them dates beyond 20 days

Kavita Shyam

Playing truant: Surveen Chawla
Surveen Chawla, Kaajjal in Kaajjal Sabbki Aankhon Mein Basi, has been giving a tough time to her producers. The actress has refused to give the required extra dates to the production house, which has left the director in a quandary. The production house (Twenty Twenty Productions) complains that the actress has no other commitment besides Kaajjal yet the quality of the serial is suffering because of her absence.

Talking about her date problems, Surveen says, "I have already blocked 20 days for the production house. And I don't think I am doing anything wrong if I take a few days off from the remaining 10 days of the month. I can't work non-stop, for 30 days."

Says Rajesh Pavitran, COO, Twenty Twenty, "In a daily soap, work never gets over within the blocked dates. Although all these months she had been giving us dates, this time Surveen has not given us extra dates. This can really put us in trouble since Surveen is the main protagonist and she has to be present in almost all frames. We have spoken to Surveen about this and we can't deny the fact that our work is suffering because of her."

ON THE SETS
Abhijeet ne jab Surveen ko dekha... to gaana gane laga
Time:9 am to 10 pm (30 days a month) of Sony's Kaajjal. Location: A studio in Goregaon (E) Sequence: Kajjal's surprise birthday party Actors: Surveen Chawla, Apoorva Agnihotri, Chetan Hansraj, Saundarya Garg and Abhijeet.

Abhijeet Bhattacharya, who's sung most of Shah Rukh Khan's hit numbers is now singing a different tune and that too, on television. He's singing Tumhe jo maine dekha from Main Hoon Na for the soap's actor Surveen Chawla who plays the lead protagonist as a birthday surprise. "They paid me my price and here I am... playing Abhijeet on the soap," says Abhijeet. And they say money talks. More like sings in his case! Chetan Hansraj (Dhruv) and Apoorva Agnihotri (Dev Pratap Singh) certainly seem to share a great camaraderie with each other on the set. Talking about life after marriage guys? As is common on every set, the cell phone is a constant companion with all the actors here too and sms forwards sure seem to be spreading a lot of cheer around here.

Apoorva and Surveen playfully pull Chetan's ears and tease him mercilessly about him checking himself out from every angle... we mean every angle! Even as he tries to defend himself, but to no avail.

Surveen is amused at the goings on around her, what with Chetan looking 'down' on himself and Apoorva wondering what's happening. But on a set, anything's possible.

Chetan, Apoorva, Surveen, Abhijeet and Saundarya Garg (whose screen name is Hotty if you please!) strike a pose. Hotty certainly seemed to hot up things on screen, if not off screen.

Sony turns to 'Star bahu' to revive prime time

Indiantelevision.com Team

(12 March 2007 5:00 pm)

MUMBAI: Amidst reports of its declining fortunes and speculation that chief creative head Sandiip Sickand may have been asked to put in his papers, SET announced the launch of its prime time soap 'Viruddh'. The show will air from 26 March, Monday to Thursday at 9:30 pm replacing Anuj Saxena's maiden production 'Kulvaddhu', which was unceremoniously axed to make way for this magnum opus.

'Viruddh' will be Smriti Irani led Ugraya Entertainment's second production venture. The show has been produced jointly by Smriti Irani and Aditya Birla group's media arm Applause Entertainment for Sony. Thodi Si Zameen, Thoda Sa Aasman on Star Plus, the debut venture for the production house didn't fare well with its viewers.

Making way for the new show, the channel has rescheduled Kaajal at the 8:30 pm slot. Says Sickand, "You do take chances with new production houses and new shows. Unfortunately Kulvadhu didn't work for us. But with Smriti Irani and a host of other power packed performers like Vikram Gokhale, Sushant Singh and Achint Kaul we are hoping that Sony's prime time will pick up.We have already covered the 10 to 11 pm slot."

Sony has spruced up this slot with Durgesh Nandini and Jeete hai Jiske Liye. While the channel heads insist that the shows have been getting a good response, there has been huge concern over its drop in ratings and falling behind Sahara One. This had given rise to rumours of Sickand being asked to 'perform or leave'.

Rubbishing these rumours, SET business head Albert Almeida said, "The last time I checked Sandiip is very much a part of the team."

Speaking on the line up of daily programmes Almeida said, "We start our daily soap line up with Kaajal at 8:30 pm where we have more of the small town and metro audiences (1 lakh +), our prime time soaps like Viruddh would see an intersection of both metro and urban viewers. Durgesh Nandini at 10 pm again sees a peak in small town audiences who leave us post 10:30 pm. The idea has been to grab an audience share across the board, especially the urban viewer in prime time. For the time being, we are concentrating on fiction."

On consciously moving away from the successful K-serial mode he added, "We did taste success with a progressive show like Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi and Kkusum. Even the soaps within the tried and tested formula are seeing a decline so why try something which is on its way out."

Viruddh spans two generations involved in a power play of relationships set against the backdrop of a powerful media house.

Actor producer Smriti Irani who considers producing shows a bigger challenge than acting in them also hinted at new shows in the pipeline although she refused to divulge details.

Heard this?

Serials killer

Sony has decided to scrap three of its recently launched big shows. Reasons cited are low TRPs and er… chief creative director Sandiip Sikcand.

Flop show: A still from Jeete Hain Jiske Liye

Contrary to popular perception, couch potatoes do demand quality, and shows must deliver to keep them glued. After the dismal TRPs garnered by Sony shows, all launched with much fanfare recently, Kaajjal Sabbki Aankhon Mein Basi, Durgesh Nandinii and Jeete Hain Jiske Liye (JHJL), the channel has decided to scrap them.

A highly placed source in the channel says, "Sony has already given an ultimatum to these shows to wind up within the next 45 days. The top management at Sony has been toying with the idea for quite some time, and a secret meeting held recently sealed the fate of these shows."

Two reasons have been cited for abruptly ending these three serials. Sony's pet scapegoat Sandiip Sikcand, chief creative director, gets the top slot in the blame game. Apparently because of his rivalry with Ekta Kapoor, the channel remained deprived of K-serials. Moreover, the shows that Sony introduced under directive from Sandiip have been performing very badly. As a corrective measure, Sandiip has already been shown the door. The second reason is the dismal TRPs that the shows have registered. TRPs of Renuka Shahane starrer JHJL have touched rock bottom with TVR less than one. Following closely are Kaajjal and Durgesh Nandinii.

Well, what does Sandiip Sikcand have to say about it? "This is not at all true. I have nothing to say beyond that," he says.

Sandiip Sikcand

It seems that the producers of the show have not been informed yet. When contacted, all the producers denied this development. Kaacon Sethi, executive producer of Kaajjal said, "This is not true. I can't believe that our show is going off-air." Sanjala Dewan, supervising producer of Durgesh Nandinii echoed the same, "We have not been informed by the channel regarding this development. I have nothing to say beyond that." Tony Singh, producer of Jeete Hain Jiske Liye refused to believe us too and said, "It's for the channel to decide what they want to do with the shows. I can't comment on the working of a channel."

I am not quitting Sony,that's final:Sandiip
By: Shaheen Parkar
April 2, 2007

Sandiip Sikcand, the channel's chief creative director, clears the air about buzz that he's been shown the door

It Ain't True: Sandiip Sikcand
Pic/ PRADEEP DHIVAR

Contrary to rumours, Sandiip Sikcand is not quitting Sony. In the last couple of months, there has been more talk about his exit than the channel's shows that are currently on air.

Almost eight months after his appointment as Sony's chief creative director, Sikcand clears the air about the buzz around him and the channel's prospects.

Were you asked to leave the channel because shows weren't picking up?

There was no such thing. I am not quitting Sony and that's final. I was not asked to go nor am I leaving.

People would call me, saying, "Hey, you are still in office? We thought you had gone." I heard that my last working date was March 31. That day has come and gone and I am still in Sony's office.

So is the date April 30 now?

No. This is baseless talk. I've stopped reacting to them now.

Do you know who is behind these rumours?

I have no clue. If I knew, I would pick up the phone and ask the person why. Why write my obit even before I've gone?

It is being said that you floated these rumours yourself.

That's ridiculous. Why would I do such a thing? What would I gain from this?

A dose of publicity, perhaps? You love seeing your pictures in the papers.

That's crap. There are so many assumptions and allegations about and against me, which are all baseless.People have known me as a theatre person even before I joined Balaji Telefilms.

I've done several plays like Ask What Father Says, Oh God! And Champagne In The House with well-known actors, so it is not that I am suddenly basking in the limelight or looking to be written about.

Are you under pressure to perform?

My job is challenging. It's not easy and I've been giving it my all.

There is also speculation about the fate of several Sony shows…

Again, those are baseless rumours. None of the present shows are going to be pulled off the air. Kaajjal, Ek Ladki Anjaani Si, Thodi Khushi Thode Gham, Durgesh Nandinii and Jeete Hai Jiske Liye will continue.

The newly launched Virrudh has also received favourable response. In fact, Durgesh Nandinii has a new character Sikander (Mohit Malik) to challenge Durgesh and even Jeete Hai Jiske Liye is due for a major twist

Then why was Kulvaddhu targetted?

It was not targetted. We have conducted surveys to understand the profile of our viewers and realised that it was not fitting with the profile of the channel. There are certain policy decisions the channel has to take.

Was it done to appease another prospective producer?

Certainly not. No channel functions like that. To appease one producer we cannot displease another.

Are you the reason why there are no Balaji shows on Sony currently?

There is no such thing. A channel is open to all production houses and their ideas.

Why is there always buzz about your moves with reference to Ekta Kapoor?

This is what I have experienced from Day One at Sony. Balaji is my past. I have moved on and want to do this job the best I can.

Have you met Ekta since quitting Balaji?

No.

Will there ever be an end to the controversies around you?

I am unnecessarily dragged into it. I have encountered several ups and downs and it's all part of life. I have learnt to take all this in my stride.
