No, there has been enough inconsistency in Padma's character, which has unfortunately contributed to both Jyoti & Sudha continuing to recognize and regard her as a mother, when they ought to know better.
Like after Jyoti returned from her honeymoon, and her insult from Padma was still fresh, Padma called her for the phag phere rasam and apologized, and Jyoti, being the idiot that she was and is, accepted it. Then, on the rakhi occasion, when Sushma started making snide remarks about Jyoti's car, Padma verbally bashed her, surprising everybody, including Jyoti & Sudha. This contributed to both Jyoti & Sudha thinking that Padma had changed, and wished well of them.
Then Padma changed back during the Ganesh festival, when she bad-mouthed the Vashisths on their riches to Jyoti, while confronting her on keeping Sushma's activities a secret. Then, when confronting Sushma, she warned her that if her activities continued, she'd stop regarding her as her daughter, and consider herself the mom of only 2 daughters. Since when did she really consider either Jyoti or Sudha her daughters?
Then again, when Jyoti was kicked out and initially declined to return home, Padma was among the loudest offended that she thought of her maayka as a stranger's place. And once she did move in, Padma was back to complaining that Deepu would have to support both of them.
In fact, the biggest contrast in Padma's character is on her class envy aspect. When they had a relationship w/ the Vashisths courtesy Jyoti, Padma hated them, and not just Bhairavi: whenever Uday took Sudha out on dates, Padma never failed to make snide remarks about him and his family. When she confronted Bhairavi, she didn't fail to give her a speech about the poor and their rishtas and izzats. But now, when it's the Trivedis, she's magically turned from a Labor class to a Laizzez Faire lady - contemplating making pastas @ home, tipping the guy that the Trivedis have sent w/ fruits, et al. Also, any normal person will think more highly of Uday than of Poonam, but while Padma always disdained Uday, and now only reluctantly admires him, she's turned a blind eye not just to Poonam's shortcomings such as cooking, but also towards her bad behavior. When Uday took Sudha out to expensive restaurants, she had her snide remarks about it, but when Poonam took Deepu to the mall and back and Sushma tried to badmouth her, Padma shut her up promptly. đđđ One might argue that Padma hates Jyoti's/Sudha's in-laws, while loving Deepu's (and had Sushma had in-laws like the Trivedis, rather than Brij, she'd have been chummy w/ them as well).
Had Padma been consistently mean towards Jyoti, as Bhairavi had been, Jyoti would have stood up to her. With Bhairavi, now that her marriage is over, she finally has. So why can't she do it w/ Padma? If Padma expects her to pay for Poonam's honeymoon, she needs to back Jyoti when Poonam complains about 2nd class tickets, or desist from asking Jyoti to bankroll Poonam's luxuries. When Padma tells Sushma to wear what Sudha is wearing, the latter should just ignore it, instead of feeling pressured.
Both Jyoti & Sudha need to stop calling or treating Padma as their mom. It's high time!!!
