Part 5 ...
It was evening when she awoke, she felt stiff all over and quite hungry too. Did anyone in the haveli remember that she was ill and lying here? She wondered. As if in answer to her thoughts, Sunheri walked in. She came up to Meera and smiled at her, "How are you feeling now?".
"Much better and hungry", said Meera with a weak smile. "That's why I'm here" said Sunheri. "Mother sent you some soup and kichdi"
Gratefully Meera took the tray and began drinking the soup. "Hmmm, that's tasty, please thank your mother for me".
Sunheri smiled, "Of course" then her smile faded," Kalki Chachi doesn't like us talking to you or meeting you. That's why I didn't come over earlier".
"That's okay", said Meera with a smile. "We started off on the wrong foot, so she doesn't like me".
"You know, I don't believe Prithvi tried to kill you" Sunheri said suddenly.
Meera knew this subject could lead to unsavory revelations, so she smiled and changed the subject, "You like him a lot don't you?"
Sunheri grinned," Well, he's the only guy with 'hero-material' in our village. Quite natural that a teen like me will admire him".
Meera laughed. "Admire eh ? Ok, I'll accept that for now".
Just then there was a knock and Prithvi walked in. Seeing Sunheri, he said " Choti-takurain you shouldn't be here".
Well, I just brought her something to eat" said Sunheri defensively." I'm going now and it's your responsibility to see that she eats up ". With that she waved at Meera and left the room.
Prithvi looked at Meera, "How do you feel now? Do you need anything else? Please eat up the kichdi, you need the strength".
"Oh stop it !" said an exasperated Meera, "You don't have to fuss over me, I can take care of myself".
He just stood there looking at some point beside her. Seeing his serious face, Meera decided to tease him a bit.
"She's in love with you", she said.
His eyes flew to her to face, "Who?"
"Sunheri"
"Oh her, No !" he said dismissively. "She's just being a teen. She'll soon out-grow this 'love' as you call it."
"So you admit she has a thing for you", said Meera mischievously.
"I'd be blind if I didn't notice", he retorted.
"That is why you never look her in the face or speak anything more than what is absolutely necessary with her"
"Well, she's a teen, I'm not, I should know better".
With that he walked over to the far end of the room and began arranging some bags of grain. Meera ate up the kichdi and sighed contentedly. She felt a lot better.
"I want to go out in the open for a bit", she called out.
"No, it's late you're still not strong enough" was his curt reply.
"Dictator" she grumbled under her breath. But she knew he was right. She was still not fit enough to go out on her own.
After a while he came up to her, " I could take you out for a short drive" he said tentatively.
She brightened, "You would ? Great ! Let's go" She swung her legs off the bed and stood up. At the sudden exertion, she swayed. In a trice her was at her side and held her by the elbow.
She glared at him and said, "I'll manage". He just nodded and stepped aside. She slowly walked out of the door. She could hear him following her closely.
She walked up to his jeep and climbed in with some effort. He stood there watching her, as she settled down, he got into the driver's seat.
Turning towards her, "Take this", he said handing over her shawl." It'll get colder as night falls".Hope it lived up to your expectations ... 😊
