He looked at his watch and realized only a few minutes were left in the card, so he continued “Jaan, I think we only have a few more minutes to talk. I was thinking we can email each other everyday and do phone calls when you get a chance. I know tomorrow your Mom and sister will be back. So I can't call any time I want. But emails can be sent anytime, I think they are a safer option for us.”

“Yeah right. I will email you and wait for your email too.”

“Of course, I will email you, everyday!” he confirmed.

“Hey, 1 minute warning came just now. Call will disconnect on its own okay! Love you Jaan, take care of yourself.”

“Love you too. You also take care of yourself.”

And just like that the phone was disconnected. She felt disappointed that from talking everyday for several hours at a time they were down to calling sometimes and mostly emails now.

This was just the beginning though, a lot more tough times and hardships were to come their way. Some they could imagine but some will be unimaginable.

Hopefully they will get through each and every one of them, together.

Chapter 41

At Moti's House

Jodha was sitting with Moti on the sofa in her living room, they were both studying and preparing for their upcoming Exams. Moti always liked studying with Jodha. They were perfect study companions for each other. Jodha knew when and how much to push Moti to study just as much as Moti knew when to stop Jodha from going overboard. But today both the friends were distracted, although Moti noticed that Jodha was distracted, she could tell that her mind was somewhere else, but Jodha was so deep in her thoughts that she didn't notice anything different about Moti's behavior.

Moti had been already waiting for her mother to leave to go to the market so she could talk to Jodha about what she had heard from a friend, but seeing Jodha all distracted she was not sure she wanted to give her the news knowing very well how much Jodha hates such talks. She was already concerned that Jodha would get irritated hearing it but now she was more concerned about Jodha because she was pretty sure something was going on with Jodha. Moti had never seen her so distracted while studying, she was always fully focused while studying. But for some reason today she was hardly paying attention to her books.

Jodha had come to Moti's house that day thinking that she would for sure tell Moti about Jalaal. She wanted to share it with her even before Jalaal went. But now that she was there in front of Moti she wasn't sure what to say to her and where or how to even begin. She was quite hopeful that Moti would understand her and support her, eventually at least, if not right away. But somewhere inside she was also scared of her best friend's reaction. She was ninety-nine percent sure that Moti would be with her no matter what but that one percent still scared her enough to second guess herself. What if she didn't support her or understand her? What would Jodha do then?? What if she decided what Jodha was doing was wrong and decided to tell Jodha's mother?? She was deep in thought about what she would do in case that one percent came true, she was trying to think of a contingency plan in her head. The only problem was, she was unable to think of any. Moti telling her Mom would be highly unlikely but still she wanted to think of every aspect and be prepared for anything.

Their books were open in front of them both, to anyone looking at them right now, it would seem like they were studying. Though in reality they were anything but.

Jodha decided that she would just have to bite the bullet and say what's on her mind, otherwise if she kept thinking of the ifs and buts she would definitely go crazy.

“Moti” Jodha called out to her in a whispering tone.

“Yes,” Moti replied distractedly. She was waiting for her mother to leave.

“I want to talk to you about something.”

“Me too!!” Moti blurted immediately. “But wait till Mom leaves, then we'll talk.” She whispered while looking around to make sure her mother was not in the hearing range.

“Okay!” Jodha confusedly replied, wondering what Moti wanted to talk to her about.

Jodha was already feeling jittery about telling Moti about her and Jalaal's relationship, now with Moti's announcement about wanting to talk to her made Jodha even more jittery. If her tone and alert behavior was anything to go by, she must really have something very important to tell. Jodha kept looking at her to try and figure out what was going on in her mind, but she couldn't tell anything. Jodha started shaking her leg in nervousness as she waited for Moti's mom to leave. Her books were open right in front of her but she could hardly read a word, it seemed the words were blurring together and she was unable to make any sense of them.

Soon Moti's mother came into the room. “Here's your coffee girls, I am going to the temple and then to the market. Will be back in a couple of hours or so. Moti come and lock the door behind me.” she instructed.

Jodha was too anxious to sit still so she started pacing around the room while Moti went to lock the door. As soon as Moti set her foot back into the room Jodha quickly asked “What's going on Moti?? What did you want to talk to me about??”

Moti looked at her oddly and once again wondered what was going on with her. Then she hesitantly spoke “Well, first you promise me that you won't get mad at me.”

“What?? Why would you ask for such a promise?? What's going on??” Jodha nervously asked. 'Did she find out about Jalaal?' She thought to herself. 'But how is that even possible. No no that can't be what she wants to talk about, right?' Jodha was now practically drowning in her nervousness.

“Jodha are you okay?? What's the matter with you??” Moti asked in concern. Then she remembered and quickly asked “Hey you also wanted to talk about something with me, what is it??” For a moment she totally forgot what she herself wanted to say.

“I'm fine. First you tell me what you want to say, I will tell you later.” she spoke in a clipped tone. Now she was starting to get really irritated.

“Okay okay fine. I will tell you.” Moti surrendered. 'Where should I even start….” She thought to herself.

“Ok ummm do you know Jeet??” Moti asked tentatively.

“Uhh no, who's that??” Jodha shrugged.

“Are you sure you don't know him??” Moti pressed.

Jodha thought for a second before replying, but the name didn't ring any bells “No, I don't think so??” she said.

With each passing second they were both getting more and more confused.

“I thought you knew him, he is your relative after all.” She muttered.

Before Jodha could reply Moti fired another question with wide eyes “Are you hiding him from me??”

“What?? What are you blabbering about?? And who the heck is this Jeet?? I don't know anyone with this name.” She stated in frustration. “Are you going to tell me what the heck is going on??” her patience was now running thin.

“You really don't know him!! I thought you also liked him and didn't tell me about it.” she confusedly said.

'She looks so cute when she is confused', Jodha thought to herself and almost immediately shook her head, now wasn't the time to get distracted.

“Okay, hold on a sec. Firstly, I don't know any Jeet and secondly, I never hide anything from you” she cringed at her own words as soon as they came out of her mouth, then she quickly added "well not for long anyway. But who told you all this crap?? You know what, start from the beginning and no puzzles this time. Just tell me in simple words what's going on.”

“Sure you don't know Jeet??” Moti again asked.

“Moti” Jodha glared, her patience was almost gone.

“Okay okay. You know my friend Neeraj in Maths section, well he told me that you and Jeet like each other and your families know each other too and Jeet told Neeraj that you are going to marry him.”

By the time Moti finished talking, Jodha's eyes were as big as saucers and she blurted incredulously “What??” Her head was spinning, she couldn't comprehend where all this was coming from and who the hell was this guy anyway, she shook her head and said “I don't even know the guy and he thinks I'll marry him!! What kind of crap is this?? Do you know who he is?? Wait, the more important question is how does he know me??” Jodha asked, trying to connect the dots.

"Well, your distant cousin who got married last year, he is her brother in law.” She explained. “You know him?”

“Ohh. I know she has multiple Brothers in law but I don't really know their names or remember their faces for that matter. After she got married I've only met her a couple of times and that too at her parent's place, so I don't know her in laws that much.” Jodha explained.

“Wow. That guy was so convincing, he even told Neeraj that he liked you right away when he saw you at the wedding, you were wearing a Cheetah print ankle length dress, your hair was open, no makeup at all but you still looked Pataka (incredible). These were his words and you don't even know he exists.” Moti started laughing her head off as she remembered how naive her friend was, especially in this aspect. She hardly pays attention to any guy who is standing right in front of her let alone some guy who saw her in a wedding where there were hundreds of people.

Jodha was stunned hearing all this. Her mind was running a mile a minute. She started getting worried about what would happen if his family approached her Mother. They already have so many hurdles to climb and now this.

Jodha again started pacing the room while muttering to herself “Oh my God, oh my God, what am I going to do?? This can't be happening, how will I get out of this?? What if they approached mom and she agrees?? How will I make her agree for us and say No for him.” She was full on panicking and rambling. “How the heck am I supposed to tell him this?? He just literally got there… he will get so worried, ugghhh.” her eyes closed on her own accord and hands fisted in anguish. But in her meltdown she didn't realize that Moti had stopped laughing and was looking at her flabbergasted. She heard her ramble and couldn't believe what she was hearing.

Moti rushed to Jodha and held her shoulders and surprisingly asked “What did you just say?? Who reached where?? Who will get worried?? Who are you talking about??” With each question she asked her voice became louder and louder making Jodha realize the blunder she made.

“Umm let's sit down and talk.” Without waiting for a reply, she went and sat on the sofa. Her shoulders slumped and she covered her face with her hands. She was taking deep breaths trying to get her mind to calm down. She felt the sofa dipping as Moti came and sat next to her. Even with her eyes closed she could feel Moti's eyes on herself, she knew Moti was expecting an explanation from her but she was not ready to explain just yet. She needed to get her thoughts together.

After patiently waiting for a few minutes Moti asked in a whisper "What is going on Jo? Talk to me!” She could see how stressed Jodha was and hence she knew something big was going on.

Jodha looked at her and suddenly blurted, “I'm in love” it was like ripping the band-aid off, she just said it coz she wasn't sure if she would be able to say it if she thought about it even for a second more.

“What?? What did you say??” Moti shrieked. Of all the things she could have expected Jodha to say, this certainly wasn't one of those.

Jodha smiled, a genuine smile, for the first time that day, it felt like something was holding her down and now she could come up and breathe freely. A big weight was lifted off her chest. “Yes, I'm in love!!” she repeated with more confidence and ear to ear smile.

Seeing her friend genuinely happy brought a smile on her own face.

“Okay, with whom??” Moti skeptically asked.

“Uhh Jalaal…” Jodha hesitated just a bit before saying his name out loud.

“Jalaal??” Moti muttered to herself while raking her brain trying to think which section had someone named Jalaal.

Jodha could literally see the wheels turning in her head. Her expressions changed from thinking hard to confusion to recognition and lastly to incredulity.

“You mean Jalaal Sir??” A wide eyed Moti asked.

Jodha shook her head up and down in confirmation with a sweet smile on her face.

“Wow” Moti said in amazement.

Jodha was curiously looking at her but couldn't tell yet if Moti was okay with this or not.

Suddenly Moti jumped in excitement and questioned “Hey was it love at first Bang??” she wagged her eyebrows up and down naughtily.

“What!!" Jodha laughed.

“I mean, you remember you banged into him the first day of grade eleven? So it was not love at first sight instead it was Love at first Bang. Get it??”

Jodha nodded saying “Haha Very funny!” And they both laughed together.

“You okay with it??” Jodha nervously asked.

“Of course, why wouldn't I be?? You look absolutely happy and even glowing while simply saying his name. I can't imagine how happy you get when you two are actually together.”

Jodha felt really proud of her best friend. She could read Jodha like a book. Jodha's smile kept growing hearing her.

“But but but you have to tell me how did this happen, I'm dying to know the whole story. So, tell me tell me. I want to know everything.”

“Well, he proposed and I said Yes!!” Jodha shrugged her shoulders in indifference.

“What?? It can't be that simple…” Moti asked, perplexed.

Seeing her face, Jodha had to laugh. “Okay okay, I'll tell you everything.” And then she told Moti how things came about. By the time she finished her story Moti's jaw was on the floor in astonishment.

“Wow, that is some story. I still can't believe you two are together now.”

“Believe me I have a hard time believing it myself, it still boggles my mind when I think about how it all happened. But at the same time I feel very happy that it happened.”

“I am very happy for you too and I'm here for you whenever you need me.” Moti said seeing the serene smile on her best friend's face.

Jodha quickly reached for her and hugged her tightly expressing her gratitude “Thank you so much for being you.”

Life was moving forward. Days kept passing and Jodha and Jalaal were both adjusting to their new circumstances trying to make the most of it. They kept in touch via emails every day and a few nightly phone calls here and there.

Just as they were getting used to things life threw a curve ball at them.

One morning as Jodha ate her breakfast her mother casually said "Jo after eating bring the phone from your room and connect it back here.”

Jodha almost choked on her food “Why??” she asked trying to sound casual but freaking out on the inside.

“Ohh I needed to make a call in the morning, you were sleeping and I didn't want to wake you up. I think it's better to keep it here, where it's more accessible.”

“Oh ok. Ya you are right.” Jodha calmly replied. Though the wheels in her head were spinning trying to think of how she would be able to talk to Jalaal now. She kept thinking as she ate her breakfast. The only way to call and talk now was when no one was home, no one at all, though that seldom happens. I have to write an email to him and let him know I won't be able to call as often now. 'As it is the calls were less and now they will be even fewer.' She thought while barely holding tears in her eyes. 'Why is life so hard?'

After finishing eating, she went to her room and brought the phone inside. She connected it back in place with her heart heavy with sadness.

That night she waited until everyone was in bed. Then she wrote and explained everything to Jalaal in the email. Once she was done writing, she connected the dial-up internet to send the mail. She quickly copied her email from notepad and sent it. Then she copied Jalaal's email onto a notepad to read later. After disconnecting the internet she started reading Jalaal's email.

He explained how things were going there. How he was getting settled in his new job. But most of all how much he was missing her.

He also told her that today he went to the photo shop with Bhabhi and gave the camera roll for development. He promised to share his photo without moustache as soon as possible.

Finally, she heard something she was happy and excited about. She went to bed with a smile on her face and excitement in her heart. She couldn't wait to see how he looks without his moustache.
