I just came across these un-used pictures from my collection...
So, the idea of a mid-week game struck me!
If these were HBAS characters, what scene could this be? If you can make one your own scenario, nothing like it... or, pick one from the story... can be funny or serious... can be 1 line or 1 para - up to you... (Periyamma would love to hear your words on this one!)
The sky was dark pink and purple and the orange ball has set out on its downward journey. It was a hot and warm day. A slow breeze was blowing making things a little bearable to the inhabitants of the city. But apparently, the weather didn't have any effect on two individuals sitting on the ledge of a haveli on the outskirts of the capital deep in thought!!
The old man with the white long beard was reading a paper in deep concentration. His bony fingers were wrinkled at innumerable places and were crooked densely. The fingers were running through his beard while he was reading the scroll for an innumerable time!
The other person was younger and well built, clothed in a dark black robe and had a look of hunger in his eyes. Hunger for trouble, hunger for revenge, hunger for power, hunger for greed, hunger for lust...in general his soul was visibly as black as his robe and all this reflected in his eyes!! He was taking puffs from the hookah pipe in between from time to time. He let out a ring of smoke after a long pull this time.
The old man asked, "Khalil, are you sure of this information? Whoever sent you this is reliable?" Khalil let out another puff of smoke in leisure and had a faraway look in his eyes. The old man coughed to clear his throat and get the attention of the man sitting alongside him. He would not have allowed anyone to use a hookah in his company otherwise but this had to be an exception. He had to play his game very carefully, he had to pick his battle and choose his cards intelligently! He bore the smoke with a gruff look showing the disapproval in his eyes if not in words.
Khalil in a more bold manner chuckled at his own non-existing joke and then after another long puff finally opened his mouth scratching his chin with his left hand. "Farooq Sahib, my sources never sends any wrong information. It is true and in fact, I was expecting it any time now". The old man scrutinized the area around themselves for another time and lowered his voice further and then asked,"So what now?"
Khalil completely unshaken said, "Farooq Sahib, why are you so surprised? Did you think Ustaad Akbar Mahmoud Khan will quietly stay away once he got the whiff of the news that the Shehzade is aware of what happened in Aidabad? I knew he will get on his horse at his first opportunity and will start for the capital." He looked at his hand and then opened his fingers and intently looked at them turning his palm around and then slowly tried to wring his arm around his shoulder but it got stuck midway and that is when a change came over.
The old man saw the rage that slowly took over the young man, His eyes turned red not from any intoxication but simply pure rage and his jaw tightened in fury. The old man smiled within himself and thought this is what was required and he had to stoke this fire within that young chest. "You know what to do Khalil to stop AMK. I will take care of Shehzade and will hold the fort here." After a long pause, he said, "I hope your shoulder is strong enough to bear this responsibility." He knew his statement will do the job and it did.
Khalil with the crunched look up his face slowly balled his fingers into a fist and with a snarl said, "Don't bother about me Farooq Sahib. You take care of here and leave the rest to me. I have to take care of many unsettled businesses"!! And then a wicked grin came over his features "Yes many unsettled...delectable...businesses"! Saying so he chuckled to himself!
The feeling was the same uncomfortable one that he got when he visited him the last time but still, it is his need and he has to make sure that Parnagarh, AMK and Harka Bai is trapped from all sides so that they remain helpless and vulnerable.
He has done his part with the Shehzade and he is sure that though Shehzade did not show any interest or belief in what he informed him about, but he was sure he had sown the seeds of doubts and mistrust in his chest which will start eating the Prince's peace of mind and ultimately the Prince will send someone to dig more information about AMK. He may not be that old as the Prince but this much politics even he knows that no matter how close or friendly you are, trust once shaken is gone forever!
He has done his part with the Shehzade and now to keep that fire burning against AMK he has to rile Khalil as well to be on the lookout to ignite the fire in Shehzade as well from his end in however way he could.
He stopped in front of the haveli. He could see two girls were waiting outside the house and he was sure they were also habitats of Khalil's harem.
The girls did a taslim and said, "Assalam-ale-kum Kunwarsa! Khalil Sahib is not here at this moment." He didn't bother to return their greetings and irritation clearly showed on his features. He came all this way for nothing! Where is Khalil? Where can he go? He needed him now! In frustration, he balled his palms into a fist and hit the saddle. The horse trotted a little in surprise but was caught back by the reins again.
He cleared his throat and asked curtly, "Do you know when Khalil Sahib will return? Or where did he go?" He knew the answer even before the girls opened their mouth. "No Kunwarsa. We don't know anything. Any message for him Kunwarsa?"
Kunwar of Manwar just negated their query with a raised hand and got on his horse again and turned around disappointed in not getting to meet with his partner in crime. He should have informed him earlier of his arrival but his trip to the Shehzade was made fast and he thought of getting a better favor for himself and his Manswar and his dream of a Hindu Kingdom free from Mughal reign was burning deep down within. And he didn't want to jeopardize his meeting in any way and neither did he want to give Khalil a part of the share. But now that his meeting is over, he thought of balancing his other wheel as well to get his dream carriage move smoothly. But his planning came against a wall of disappointment. Khalil is not there and he has to return without seeing him. Something needs to be done fast! And now!!
