Girls are a pampered lot in our society. Till a few generations ago, men used to be away on trade overseas to Malaysia/Singapore/Burma and different countries. So women have managed homes independently and confidently. So they were given basic education, personal capital and they took all sundry decisions in family matters. Of course there were exceptions in various degrees. But as a general rule, women were never looked down upon. All mother's moneys/properties were given to daughters and father's to sons. But today everything is divided equally, unless of course willed to anyone in particular.

Even today, whatever monies/wealth are given in marriage, are given only to the bride. Any husband or in-law who takes it is frowned at.

And as for celebrating birthdays, the elders in our family are against celebrating anyone's birthdays, boys or girls, western style. They say light/lamps have to be lit on Shubh occasions not blown bhujaofied. Only favorite food items on star birthday and temple visits if conducive.
