Once when I was little
I was happy and carefree.
I used to run around laughing
Until it was time for tea.

I used to play games
And smile all the time.
I used to feel on top of the world
I used to feel fine.

It's amazing how things change
When people let you down.
And how that once happy face
Turns into a solemn frown.

You search and search
For someone who cares,
Anyone who understands,
Anyone who dares.

Loneliness, it hurts.
It kills you deep inside.
It makes you feel empty.
It stops you in your stride.

You cry yourself to sleep,
Hugging your pillow tight,
Wishing for someone
To hold you through the night.

Once when I was little
I was happy and carefree.
Now my life's full of sadness,
Pain and misery.

Once when I was little
I was never on my own.
But now I pray at night
"I wish I wasn't alone."

I have read this poem before. But reading it now , and relating it to Heera's state of mind, it's a totally different thing... thanks for sharing it here, Manasi 😳... with that simple yet gorgeous cherry in the bottom 😊

As-Salaam Alaikum Lashy Sahiba!

You might have a hundred different reasons to write what you are writing, but what I enjoy the most is the multiple thriller elements that you have experimented with, successfully(coz, I am not really romantic...). But the story behind the Stranger, sounded like Ashutosh Gwarikar's storytelling - a relevant social issue, in the garb of History! Interesting, though... another modern story from you is welcome 😉

NJAPA was a who-dunnit kind of thriller, but here in HBAS all the Cards are on the table - we're just kept anticipating the next moves! And the chase has just began...

The Chase I : The Parnagarh subjects
If someone is more agonised than Harka, it's them. If someone is more unsettled than the flurry of thoughts crossing the Ustaad's head, it's them. If Heera was stepping out on the unknown terrains, the pains were theirs, when at the end of all this she lives happily ever after, peace and satisfaction would be theirs. What I observe, is not their unwavering loyalty on their Feather, or the palpable tension on their faces on probably seeing their baisa for one last time - but this, that the story is of Parnagarh, as much as it's of Heera and Akbar. If anything was really fearful, yet heart tugging after Heera's frantic attempts, I think it would be Gokul's hacked corpse, and Dhani shielding Heera as the dressed up baisa... these Rajputs are something else altogether!

I was blown away as a feather, by this metaphorical use of Feather - since Heera is a featther and a foster parent to the Parnagarh! So kudos there! 👏

The Chase II : The Dark Knight Returns
It may not be apt enough, but going by your description of Khalil, this was the first phrase that struck me. I am still unable to come to terms with his entry - even darkness must've trembled like a leaf in the face of this storm. Dear lady, you have a flair for antonyms, me thinks - such a remarkable contrast you have drawn between him and the Ustaad! Both meet Heera when she's nearly dead, one to bring her back from the claws of Death, and the other because HE WAS the claws of Death. When He dragged her to Life, they were left alone under the Moons and stars, when Khalil is here to kill, she has the much needed ambience of fear and death. Khalil is dark enough for Ustaad to shine bright. A Handsome Horror, to give the right challenge to the Keeper of the Flame! This chase is going to be something else, altogether 😉...

The Chase III : Feather and Flame
Imperfections make her more beautiful - for she might be imperfect, but she's perfecting with every cut on her chiselled self! She's slightly more dazzling than before, and slightly sharper too. A Soothing Feather to her kith and kin, she makes it light for them to bear as she shoulders all pains. She doesn't deny Mohan or Bindiya - for it'd have been an insult to the services of the former, and disregard to the genuine devotion of the latter - she just assigns them visibly more important tasks!

A Challenging Flame to the challenges - flickering, so as appear harmless yet keep the adversary guessing its fuel, steadily glowing so as to stun the storm by her grace, and blazing with warmth to radiate strength to her fellow folks!

Mashallah! She's something else altogether ⭐️...

The Chase IV : The Charge of the Light Brigade
A satisfied Teacher, a band of loyal pupils, a flickering Flame of hope - crackling with dreams , and eating away despondency, and a few tease-a-thons - that is what is needed to Ride into the mouth of Death! His soul mate and him - they are journeying on opposite paths, but that's why their paths would ultimately meet in the chase. They are twined by Fate, so even when she looks out for help she finds the Marwari racer, the once His Marwari racer - the most profited investment of Durga bai. It's as if, Durga had indirectly found Ustaad for Harka! Curious bit of thought, I have😆

The entire procedure of this ambitious chase so far was entertaining and so unique to hear, nothing like anything I've come across. Our predecessors, were indeed a bunch of brainy heads - thanks for introducing the info on Mongolian Warfare, in the story as well as in a separate footnote. It's amazing to note how these old world people made the best out of nothing, with little ammunition, and plenty of planning, they achieved the impossible - be it the Mongols, as I read here, or the Marathis as I read in Abhay's post the other day!

The Chase V : Demons and Diamond - The Face off
Even after a paragraph and a half, I could barely stomach what had befallen us, and when the reality hit me hard with the hacked corpse of Gokul - for a while, I was convinced that the Author dearest had taken us for a ride this time, promising a fairy tale story, and gifting a horror story - which is when I learnt the lesson. A lesson, Heera had already realized and had started working at too.

A question can be stalled only by an answer flat as a shield and strong with the lack of emotions! Heera did just that, and Khalil, being used to bringing out the best or worst in an opponent, didn't know what to make out of this unheard of wordplay, and unseen poise... that too in a Rajput lady... who is cornered, subdued... and already aware of his abilities.

The will to avenge is a deadly fuel, and that is what is keeping Heera strong, she's scared but not yet out of her wits, for she looks about for crevices, all the while making him guess and divert his advances - a mammoth task, and a task , her jiji's sword failed to accomplish.

I wait for the Marwari racer and the Mistress to hatch a ploy, and the Ustaad to make a move, and real one... and well... i wait for more. After all, the NJAPA author was a beauty... but this HBAS author is something else altogether! 😉

(So what if Khalil said it, he wasn't wrong, was he?! And I am right, and you know that, don't you?!😉)

Wa-Alaikum-Salaam, Adwi!! ⭐️ I've read your previous reviews also. Always it's so unique and beautiful in its own way but honestly this review is something else altogether! Thank you so much for this extraordinary write-up!! 👏 👏 👏
